Find, Fix & Forget
Simple Weatherization Tips The weather outside may be frightful, but inside, many homeowners can still enjoy the comfort and coziness of warmth ... if they don't have to worry about cold air drafts and leaks causing the temperature inside to plummet like the climate outside. Luckily, for many homeowners, problem areas where cold air is sneaking in - and warm air may be escaping - can easily be found, fixed and then forgotten. According to the U.S. Department of Energy), the annual energy bill for a typical single family home is about $2,200. By properly sealing and insulating your home, you can save up to 10 percent on home energy costs. And, you don't need permanent, expensive draft-blocking solutions, such as installing new windows, adding more insulation or replacing old doors with insulated versions, to stay warm and reap the financial rewards. For leaks under doors and windows, look for a solution that will "hug" the bottom to create an airtight barrier. The Double Draft Seal from Duck brand offers two layers of protection from drafts, sealing underneath doors and windows from both sides, for maximum energy efficiency and thermal protection. For more information and tips to winterize your home, visit DuckBrand.com/HomeSmart.

Save More In the aftermath of the Great Recession, one good money habit seems to be sticking around: swiping plastic less. In fact, a recent survey by USAA found more than half of the shoppers don't plan to use a credit card at all this holiday shopping season. However, two in five consumers still plan to use their credit card this year. "While it's good to see people are relying less on credit for holiday shopping, using a credit card is not always a financial faux pas," says Joseph Montanaro, financial planner for USAA. "But, you have to use them wisely, rather than as a crutch to spend more than you can afford." Here are four excuses to pull out your plastic this holiday season: 1. The holiday shopping season can be an ideal time to maximize rewards program benefits. 2. Using a credit card at least a few times per year can help keep your credit score in good standing. 3. Purchase protection or extended warranty can provide you with peace of mind on expensive purchases.
Thinking About a
Payday Loan? A payday loan, which is illegal in many states, is a short term loan of usually $100$500. The interest rates are very high, sometimes 400% or more. Typically. a borrower provides the lender authorization to take the loan amount and fees out of his/her checking account in a week or two, when the borrower is next paid. If the loan is not paid back at the end of the term, the loan is renewed and the consumer is charged more fees and interest. Under the federal Truth in Lending Act, the cost of payday loans must be disclosed in writing. The total amount financed and the annual percentage rate must be provided in writing before the loan is made. There are several alternatives to payday loans. Seek a loan from a licensed lender that makes small, unsecured loans. Obtain a loan from a credit union. Get a cash advance from your credit card. Make a pawn loan using a nonessential item as collateral. Speak with your creditors to see if they can provide better payment terms. Seek help from a not-for-profit, licensed credit counseling service. Visit nyconsumer.gov for additional resources and information.
4. Debit cards can provide the best of both worlds, with some offering credit card-style rewards programs and the built-in spending limits of cash. (ARA)

Building Strong Families of Faith in Tough Times Mark Schrade Senior Pastor Metropolitan Church of God

The book of Job shows us how to build strong families in tough times. The first thing we notice about Job was that he “Worshipped Consistently”. The adversary’s plan was to get Job’s family to “curse” God (Job 1:5; 11; 22:9). This phrase meant to get his family to a place where they would “bid farewell to God” in their lives. Yet, Job made sure he kept worshipping consistently by first “sacrificing regularly” (Job 1:5). Every day Job would offer a burnt sacrifice for each one of his children, praying that they would totally surrender their lives to God. As parents, we must continually “make sacrifices” that will bring our children closer to God. Try reading the Bible together or praying together and be sure to attend church regularly. Secondly, we can build a strong family and faith by exhibiting an example of “Spiritual Maturity and Integrity.” The Bible says that Job was “blameless” or morally flawless. He not only worshipped consistently, but he also lived a great example before his family of a wife, three daughters and seven sons. That integrity showed up when things got “tough”. Job had been prosperous. He was in retail clothing (7,000 sheep), trucking business (3,000 camels), farming (1,000 oxen), and the grocery business (500 female donkeys – milk). When nearly all of his possessions were plundered and his family killed, Job fell to the ground in complete submission and total commitment to God and worshipped (Job 1:21-22). Building strong families in tough times means that we “model integrity” in 4
We br i n g p e o p l e a n d h o m e s t o g e t h e r .
these tough times. Our children are watching how we respond in faith or a lack of faith when pressed by life’s circumstances. Finally, we see how Job developed his families “Trust” in God during the tough times they faced. Job teaches husbands and wives to “Discern Bad Advice” in tough times. Eliphaz, Bildad, Zophar, and Elihu all gave Job bad advice in his tough times, but Job avoided their condemnation and bad advice by holding firmly to God’s word (Job 6:10. Job also gave “Reasons for Trusting God” when God’s plans are beyond our understanding (Job 19:25-27). Job further thought to “Believe When Things Go from
Bad to Worst” (Job 23:8-11). We see that when bad things happen to good people we are told “Don’t Panic, Worship” (Job 1:21)! And the bottom line in tough times was that “Nothing Is Impossible with God!” “Eloah” is the Hebrew name for God used fifty-five times in the Old Testament, but out of those fifty-five times, Job uses this designation forty times, describing his faith in “God the Almighty,” that was the ground of his faith.

* Dress up older pieces with new cushions and pillows in eye-catching colors and patterns. A fresh pop of color can draw the eye away from less attractive surfaces. * If your furniture is just too tired-looking and replacing it is not in the budget, consider concealment. Slip covers and colorful throws are cost-effective ways to refresh older couches, loveseats, dining room chairs, armchairs and even recliners. Choose ones that accentuate your holiday theme, such as "Snowball" slip covers that offer a plush feel and bright colors in a material with a raised, snowball-like pattern.
Walls
Easy Decor Upgrades to 'Wow' Holiday Guests Will this year's holiday house guests be seeing the same drapes, throw pillows and wall decor they saw in your home last year? Or even the year before that? If your decor is looking tired - or you're just plain tired of it - the holiday season is a good time to gift yourself with a few new items that will also refresh your home for guests. It's easy to make a big decorating impact if you focus on sprucing up areas like windows, furnishings and walls. Consider these helpful hints:
Windows
The cheapest, most high-impact way to make windows look better is to wash them. Seriously. For the price of a roll of paper towels and some window cleaner - and some elbow grease - you can make your windows look great, not to mention brighten the entire room.
Birmingham, AL
Once your windows are sparkling, reward

yourself for your hard work with some new window treatments. If the holiday hustle and bustle leaves little time for a run to the home decor store, online resources like SeventhAvenue.com make it fast and easy to shop for curtains. Whether you opt for traditional or contemporary, replace curtains in rooms where guests are most likely to gather, such as the kitchen, living room or family room. To top off the holiday spirit of your new curtains, replace standard tie-backs with some festive holiday bows.
Furnishings
Replacing every stick of worn-looking furniture in your home's "public areas" probably isn't practical for your budget with the expenses of the holiday season looming. But you can refresh the furniture you have with a few simple steps: * Make sure it's clean. Polish wood surfaces and vacuum upholstery. Dust and dirt will never be a designer statement.

Painting walls is a low-cost, low-labor way to refresh a room's atmosphere and set the stage for a whole new look - even if you just put the same furniture back into the freshly painted room. Giving walls a fresh coat of paint is well within the capabilities for most do-it-yourselfers, but if you've never painted before or are hesitant to take on the project just before the holidays, there are other ways to liven up your walls. Changing wall decor can be fast, effective and fun. Sometimes simply moving a well-loved piece of art from one room to another is enough to make you see the piece - and the room - in a new light. Or, if you crave something new without the hassle of in-store shopping during the holiday season, you can find wall decor from framed art and mirrors to wall hangings and tapestries online. The holidays and their hectic pace may make it hard to fight your own fatigue, but you don't have to face the season - and all your house guests - with tired home decor. A few simple, cost-effective upgrades can make your home bright again this holiday season. (ARA)

Dreaming of a
'Green' Holiday It might feel like the holiday season is still eons away, but think again. Do you have your decorating, entertaining and gifting plans in place? If you're looking for ideas and inspiration, why not think green this year? This isn't just about holiday garlands, trees and wreaths. This is the eco-friendly and sustainable kind of green. And keep in mind that going green for the holidays doesn't mean being boring - you can incorporate all the glitz and glam of the season and still help the environment. Here's how:
Eco-friendly fresh face If you're looking to perk up tired rooms before holiday guests arrive, nothing changes the look of a space more dramatically and cost effectively than a fresh coat (and color) of wall paint. Dutch Boy's no-VOC Refresh Interior Latex paint fits the eco-friendly bill without sacrificing quality, an extremely important benefit. It even goes one step further - thanks to its innovative formulation featuring exclusive Arm & Hammer odor-reducing technology, Refresh captures, removes and locks common household airborne odors into the paint's film. Rest assured, it will keep your house smelling fresh throughout the holiday season and beyond.
Twinkling lights Forget the old, energy-hogging incandescent indoor and outdoor holiday lights. Think LED instead. Strands made from light-emitting diodes are up to 90 percent more efficient than traditional holiday lighting. According to the Department of Energy, the best white LEDs have been found to have a useful life of about 35,000 hours, or four years, of
continuous operation. What's even better: You won't face the trauma of an entire strand blowing if one bulb dies. On LEDs, when one light goes out on a string, the others stay lit.
Sustainable sentiments Americans purchase seven million greeting cards each year. Out of seasonal card sales, which account for half of total sales, 60 percent of these cards are Christmas cards. Imagine the number of trees it takes to produce that many cards each year, not to mention how much waste reaches landfills when the cards get tossed. Send cards printed on recyclable paper with ecofriendly inks instead of traditional cards. Or better yet, take the plunge and embrace electronic greetings: send your holiday wishes to friends and family via the Internet. While old-school Emily Post-types might not quite approve of this method just yet, your environmentally minded loved ones will thank you - and so will our forests.
Smart gifting The option to add an eco-friendly twist to holiday gifts is on its way to becoming limitless. With so many environmentally friendly products on the market, it's easy to find a gift that's thoughtful, useful and sustainable.
Linda Carroll
It's not hard to make even small changes and go green for the holidays. By doing so, you'll be helping the environment and still be able to deck those halls in style. The two no longer are mutually exclusive. It truly is possible to make your holidays both sustainable and spectacular. (ARA)

Another option is to make your own gifts - knit a scarf, bead a bracelet, bake a batch of goodies, get crafty with found items around your house. If you're not creative, there are plenty of websites where you can buy handmade items from artisans in the United States or even abroad (be sure to look for fair-trade websites, if you buy from overseas, particularly from developing countries).

If you do decide to buy gifts at a bricks-and-mortar store, why not consider buying local and visit that charming boutique you keep saying you want to check out? Most of the time, these shops carry items from local vendors. They also tend to offer many handmade and/or eco-friendly products. Shopping local keeps money in your community and keeps small business owners thriving.
Holiday Gifts for DIY Guys and Gals If you're gift-shopping for a do-it-yourselfer this holiday season - whether a seasoned pro, or someone learning to become handy around the house tools are always appreciated gifts. Practical, yet fun, there are a number of tools every guy or gal should have in their toolbox to make home improvement or hobby projects a success. Plus, there are a few hot items that every tool fan is lusting over this year. "My No. 1 piece of advice before starting any project is to make sure you have the right tools," says Brian Benes, Dremel product manager. "You'll get better results and the project will be much more enjoyable. You never know when a project could pop up, so a well-stocked toolbox is a tremendous asset." Visit your local hardware store or home improvement center to scoop up these holiday must-haves:
* A basic hammer and a set of screwdrivers in various sizes. From hanging pictures, to fixing a loose table leg, these tools are always in demand. Be sure to include an assortment of nails and screws to complete the package. * Various sizes and types of clamps. You can never find enough uses for them, and frequently need to use multiple clamps at once. * An oscillating tool designed for DIY use. Oscillating tools are hot this holiday season and a great asset for repair, remodel and restoration work. From making cuts in awkward places to removing bathroom grout or tub caulking, they are a versatile and convenient tool to have on hand. Pick one that offers a high level of performance without the professional price tag, such as the Dremel Multi-Max - either corded or cordless.

* A rotary tool. Rotary tool recipients will continue to be amazed at the amount of tasks this compact, multi-purpose tool can tackle, including carving, routing, engraving, grinding, sharpening, cutting, cleaning, polishing and sanding. The Dremel brand invented the rotary tool more than 75 years ago, and still offers the biggest tool and accessory selection. * A quality tape measure. From home improvement projects to body measurements, there are limitless uses for a tape measure.
* A pair of lineman's pliers. Equipped with a gripping joint, cutting edge and insulated handle grips, they can be used for gripping small objects or to cut and bend wire and cable. They come in particularly handy for working with electrical cables, as the insulated handles reduce the risk of shock.

* A set of pencils. While it sounds mundane, pencils come in handy for nearly every project, whether cutting a straight line, tracing a circle, or marking where a nail will be inserted into a wall. Pencils make a great stocking-stuffer, and can even be customized with the recipient's name.
* A compact, cordless drill. A handy tool for driving screws or making holes - 14V or 18V is great for the average homeowner.

* A torpedo level. An essential tool if you don't want your new books falling off your new bookshelf. Torpedo levels often contain more than one liquid vial for checking more than one angle at a given time.
