Tips for Weathering

The Winter
disposable batteries, prevent hazardous waste by buying batteries with low mercury content.
Winterize your vehicle by checking your air filter and fluid levels, checking tires for tread wear and proper inflation, and checking the condition of your windshield wipers. Ensuring your vehicle is ready for weather changes will reduce damage, which prevents waste from broken parts, and will keep you safe on the road.
To make sure your heating system (boiler, furnace or heat pump) is operating at its most efficient, it is a good idea to have a contractor perform a routine check-up and any necessary maintenance on the equipment before freezing weather drives up your energy bill. (EPA)
If you have a wood-burning fireplace, save your ashes in a tin instead of throwing them away. Cold wood ashes can be mixed in your compost heap to create a valuable soil amendment that provides nutrients to your garden. Use electric snow removal products rather than gasoline-powered ones. While electric products consume energy, they do not emit greenhouse gases. As alternatives, use snow shovels, ice crackers, and brooms to clear snow from your sidewalk, porch, or driveway. If you have a manual thermostat or no thermostat at all, one way to save energy and money this winter is to install a programmable thermostat. When installed and used with the four preprogrammed temperature settings for weekend and weekdays, you can save about $100 each year while staying comfortable. Before leaving for vacation, turn down your thermostat (or use a programmable one) so that you don’t waste natural resources by generating unneeded heat. You can also buy outdoor and indoor lights with timers so that lights don’t stay on all night. Close the recycling loop. Many articles of clothing, such as jackets, scarves, gloves, and boots, are now made from recycled materials. Most fleece products are made from recycled plastic soda bottles, and certain clothing and shoe manufacturers use recycled cotton scraps and rubber tires to make their products. Winter storms often cause power outages. Prevent waste by keeping rechargeable batteries rather than disposable ones stored throughout your house with your flashlights. If you do use

from electrical shock and electrocution. If circuits are not GFCI protected, you can get portable outdoor GFCIs where electrical supplies are sold. They require no special knowledge or equipment to install. • Once you’ve safely put up your decorations, continue to ensure your electrical safety by turning off all electrical items before leaving the house or going to bed. To reduce your risk, it’s also important to keep Christmas trees hydrated and at least three feet from heating equipment or any open flame, such as a candle or fireplace.
Protect Your Home

While holiday decorations are a great way to spread the joy of the season, you have to make sure they’re safe. Whether you decorate indoors, outdoors or both there are certain electrical safety tips you need to keep in mind.
Advantages of Selling Your Home During the Holidays
• First, always purchase electrical decorations and lights from reputable retailers and make sure they’ve been approved by a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Intertek (ETL) or Canadian Standards Association (CSA).
There’s no denying it, selling your home during the “off season”, November through January, can be challenging. The good news is, there are actually some perks to selling during these months. “Buyers are more serious during this time of the year,” says Shannon Petrie of Frontdoor.com. “Anyone shopping for a home during the holidays probably has to buy before a certain deadline.” This might include buyers looking to relocate, investors looking to close before the end of the year for tax reasons, or students/staff looking for housing between academic sessions. Work with your agent to target these motivated buyers.”
• Next, plan out your decoration arrangements so no outlet is overloaded and no cords are pinched by furniture or under rugs. Once you’re ready to decorate, inspect all electrical decorations for cracked, frayed or exposed wiring. These can pose shock and fire hazards and should be thrown away. When hanging holiday lights, don’t connect more than three strings of incandescent lights. Alternatively, consider purchasing LEDs, which use less energy and let you safely connect more strings together. • When decorating outdoors, bear in mind that some common electrical products you use inside, such as holiday lighting or extension cords, may not be suitable for outdoor use. Check each product’s labels or packaging to determine whether it’s for indoor or outdoor use. Outdoor electric lights and decorations should be plugged into circuits protected by ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs), which are designed to protect
Other off-season selling advantages include fewer homes on the market, agents, inspectors and appraisers with less demanding schedules. And don’t forget added curb and emotional appeal. Houses tastefully decorated with candles, lights and trimmings can help buyers see themselves enjoying their own holiday celebrations in the home next year. Experienced agents know that home sales remain consistently steady, even through the winter months. Work with an agent who understands the advantages of selling off-season and put their experience to work for you. December

Don’t Get Left Out In The Cold Here’s a chilling fact: Cold weather affects auto batteries more than any other engine component. That’s because they’re filled with fluid containing mostly water and are susceptible to freezing when the battery is not fully charged. Expert Advice “In colder temperatures, engines require more cranking amps and batteries are less efficient,” explained Interstate Batteries engineering services manager, Gale Kimbrough. “That reduces the battery’s charge acceptance and ability to start an engine. If not properly maintained, it could create a big damper on your travel plans.”
Seven Steps to Staying on the Road to Safety To help you keep your vehicle battery running in cold weather -and know what to do when it’s time to replace it-consider these seven tips: 1. Have the vehicle’s starting and charging system tested every three months or every oil change. 2. Use a battery charger to maintain charge levels and keep the battery in good condition. 3. Inspect the battery cables, posts and fasteners. Cable corrosion prevents power from flowing freely from the battery, reducing the power available to start the car. 4. Clean the battery terminals with a wire brush or battery cleaner spray.
newsShorts
5. When possible, keep the vehicle in a garage overnight or plugged in, especially in extremely harsh weather conditions. If garage storage is not possible, it may pay to invest in a battery heater. 6. If the battery is not a sealed model, check the fluid levels, using distilled water to fill any cells that appear low. 7. You can drop your old batteries to be recycled at any Interstate Batteries or Interstate All Battery Center retail store. While you’re there, you can get a free winter battery check. For further facts and advice, visit www.interstate batteries.com or call (866) 842-5368. (NAPSI)
‘Tis the Season to
Safeguard Your Identity From crowded malls to the big online markdowns, a silent threat lurks – one with the ability to wipe out your good financial standing and make it a not-sojolly holiday for you and your family. In the digital world, sharing your identity to obtain credit, make online holiday purchases or even receive coupons is commonplace and necessary – but it opens the door to new risks. Today, data breaches are frequent and they can put your personal information in the wrong hands. The specialists at LifeLock offer these tips to help protect you while shopping this holiday season: Know where your info goes. Many online stores offer helpful apps for quicker, more efficient holiday
shopping. Before you download any app, make sure it comes from a reputable source. Copycat apps exist which, once downloaded, may capture your personal information and use it for fraudulent purchases. Overall, it is important to know where your information is being stored – whether on your device, the hard drive of your computer or in a file at home. Be vigilant on public Wi-Fi. Whether at your local coffee shop or while traveling, do not transact on public Wi-Fi and be wary of any passwords you enter. It’s always safer if you can wait until you get to a secure or private network. Change passwords frequently. Make sure the passwords you use when setting up accounts with online merchants are complex and difficult for a thief to figure out. It is always a good idea to change passwords to all your accounts on a regular basis – especially with banks, email accounts and social networking sites – to add an extra layer of protection to your personal data. Consider using a credit card. When you choose your debit card over your credit card, you may be exposing yourself to more risk. The most you’d have to pay for unauthorized use of your credit card is $50, no matter when you report it. If you report your debit card lost or stolen more than two days after you learn about the loss or theft, but less than 60 days after your statement is sent, you could lose up to $500. And if you wait more than 60 days after your statement is sent, you could be out all the money taken from your account. As a consumer educated on identity theft, you’ll have some peace of mind and be more able to focus on the fun of the shopping season. For more information, visit LifeLock.com. (Family Features)

Updates For Your
Kitchen
Homeowners have spent more on kitchen remodeling than any other home improvement category in the last 10 years, according to Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies - and there’s good reason. An updated kitchen does more than boost the value of your home; whether you make just a few changes or completely renovate the entire space, a kitchen that feels new is always refreshing. From basic cooking to frequent entertaining, your dream kitchen should look good and function well. Since the kitchen is ever-evolving, so are the products available. Skip the fads and include ideas that are aesthetically pleasing and withstand the test of time. Here are a few updates that will turn your current space into the one you’ve been dreaming about.
Think Sinks When remodeling a kitchen, homeowners often overlook the sink, but it’s one element that can make a valuable style statement. While shopping for a new sink and faucet, search for the highest quality materials, like stainless steel, that are just as beautiful as they are practical. If you’re looking for a dramatic focal point - as well as a sink that can accommodate all your pots, baking sheets and glasses - try an apronfront design. This style has been modernized, accessorized and streamlined to suit the needs of today’s homeowners. Moen also offers a stainless steel version that gives this classic a contemporary twist. With a great number of faucets on the market, there’s a design for everyone. The timeless feel of a traditional kitchen is still the most popular. If you
want fashion and function, try one like the Brookshire kitchen faucet from Moen, which features decorative touches and classic styling and a Reflex system for pulldown and pullout faucets, which offers self-retraction of the spray wand, as well as an exceptional range of motion, generous reach and secure docking retraction.
Be Smart With Appliances Unlike a rug or lamp, kitchen appliances are not simple to return, so be smart when upgrading these items. Before making a purchase, it’s best to work with a professional for guidance, and weigh all factors, such as who uses the kitchen, how many people are cooking at one time and how often your family cooks. If you’re an aspiring chef, consider a gas range that allows you to control the flame with precision. If you’re a busy mom, electric versions allow you to heat food and boil water faster. It’s also important to consider finishes - if the rest of your fixtures are brushed nickel, you may want to opt for a stainless steel range, refrigerator and dishwasher for a coordinated look.
Remember, even if a feature sounds interesting, it doesn’t mean you need it. It’s best to purchase what suits your needs and lifestyle. By making smart choices, and not splurging on unnecessary features, you’ll have the budget to spend money where it matters most for you.
Add An Island Add beauty, function and value to the heart of the home with an island. Many homeowners choose to build an island within their kitchen as a place for family and friends to gather and socialize. A multi-level design with stools on one side can provide casual seating for guests, leaving the other side available for you to prepare food or serve appetizers. If you like to cook and entertain, you may also want a design that includes a bar/prep sink and beverage faucet - this will aid in prep and provide fresh drinking water. The SIP beverage faucet from Moen offers a coordinating style for every decorating taste. Enjoy cold, filtered water on demand, and the high-arc rotating spout allows for extra convenience when filling pitchers, coffee makers and more. For more information on Moen products, visit www.moen.com or call 800-BUY-MOEN. (BPT) December

Answer:
Your Fiduciary: As a registered Investment Advisor Firm, it is required of us to always act as our clients fiduciary. This means always putting our clients best interests first. This is in contrast to that of a broker/dealer relationship, as broker/dealers are only required to make “suitable” recommendations versus always being required to make recommendations that are in your best interest. Transparent: registered Investment Advisor Firms are required to always fully disclose all fees and potential conflicts of interest to you, the client. Our

clients know exactly how much they pay for our services in a clearly spelled out written agreement – again in stark contrast to traditional broker/dealer representative requirements on transparancy. Fee Only: As a registered Investment Advisor Firm, we are compensated from fully disclosed fees, and accept no commissions or any other forms of third party compensation, thus eliminating any conflicts of interest. Again, as a registered Investment Advisor Firm, we are always required to act in your best interest, and we can think of no better way than by refusing commissions and third party incentives for recommendations we make that create conflicts of interest.
In addition to all of the above, we are: Independent – We work for our clients, rather than representing a specific bank, investment or insurance company. We have no sales quotas, contests and accept no compensation from third parties, therefore we can offer our clients many, many more investment options at a much lower cost.
Are you ready to experience the fee-only difference? We are never paid commissions or referral fees, We do not sell products (Loaded mutual Funds or ”other products”). You pay for our objective, unbiased advice and expertise, which aligns your goals with our goals – to grow your wealth. 518-431-9880

Tips For
Keeping Hardwood
Floors Looking Beautiful No matter what the setting, the good looks and durability of hardwood floors can be maintained with minimal effort. It’s simply a matter of proper care and maintenance.
20
LifeandHomes â– Capital Region
The American Hardwood Information Center, www.HardwoodInfo.com, in conjunction with the National Wood Flooring Association suggest the following care and maintenance guidelines to keep hardwood floors looking beautiful today, and for years to come. Here’s how to begin.
General Maintenance Guidelines All hardwood floors should be cleaned regularly to remove dirt and grit from between the floor boards. Avoid using a wet mop which can dull the finish. Instead, sweep with either a dust mop or broom that features exploded tips, or vacuum the floors using a vacuum with special hardwood floor attachments or one with the beater bar turned off. Wipe up any spills immediately, using a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth, starting at the edges of the spill and working toward the center. Allowing spills to remain on hardwood floors could damage the finish, as well as the wood.

Avoid walking on hardwood floors with sports cleats or high heel shoes in disrepair. These can scratch the finish, or even dent the floor. Placing felt pads on the bottom of furniture legs will also minimize scratches. Further minimize scratches by placing scatter rugs at all entrances to help keep small stones and debris out. But choose wisely. Scatter rugs with rubber backs can discolor wood floors. Special rug mats can be
purchased from a wood flooring retailer that will protect the floors from discoloration.
You’re not ‘finished’ just yet Knowing which type of finish applied to protect the hardwood floor is important. Different flooring finishes require different kinds of care, so if or when in doubt, contact the flooring manufacturer or a wood flooring professional in your area. There are three major types of wood flooring finishes available – surface finishes, wax, and acrylic impregnated – and the experts at the National Wood Flooring Association, www.woodfloors.org, stress that using the right maintenance products will protect and prolong the life of the floor. Surface finishes, also referred to as urethanes or polyurethanes, are practical and very popular. They remain on the surface of the wood and form a protective coating that is water-resistant, durable and requires minimal maintenance.
22
LifeandHomes ■ Capital Region
For cleaning purposes, use products recommended by the flooring manufacturer. If the floors were finished or refinished on site, contact the installer. If neither is known, use a generic hardwood floor cleaner which can be purchased at a retail flooring store. Never use wax-based or petroleum-based products on a surface finish floor, as they will damage the finish. Wax finishes soak into the wood, harden to form a protective penetrating seal, and when needed, are maintained with additional thin applications of wax. Only solvent-based waxes, buffing pastes or cleaning liquids made specifically for wax-finished wood floors should be used. Use cleaning products, available at retail flooring stores, made specifically for wax finishes. Follow the directions carefully to determine how long the cleaner should remain on the floor. Once the floor is clean, apply a new coat of wax to restore luster.
Acrylic impregnated finishes are injected into the wood to create a super-hard, extremely durable floor. These finishes most often are used in high traffic areas of malls, restaurants and other commercial settings. Cleaning an acrylic impregnated floor depends on the finish. If the floor has a urethane-based finish, follow the same procedures suggested for surface finished floors. If the floor has a nonurethanebased finish, use a spray and buff system, as recommended by the manufacturer.
Don’t hesitate to investigate It pays to be knowledgeable. Proper care and maintenance will protect and prolong the performance of hardwood flooring for a lifetime, and even longer. To learn more about how to sustain the natural beauty and durability of your hardwood flooring, visit the American Hardwood Information Center at www.HardwoodInfo.com.
