Each year, an average of 430 Americans die from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning, and there are more than 20,000 visits to the emergency room with more than 4,000 hospitalizations. Carbon monoxide-related deaths are highest during colder months. These deaths are likely due to increased use of gas-powered furnaces and alternative heating, cooking, and power sources used inappropriately indoors during power outages. Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal- burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace or any partially enclosed area. Locate unit away from doors, windows and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to come indoors. Keep these devices at least 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents. The primary hazards to avoid when using alternate sources for electricity, heating or cooking are carbon monoxide poisoning, electric shock and fire. Install carbon monoxide alarms in central locations on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide. If the carbon monoxide alarm sounds, move quickly to a fresh air location outdoors or by an open window or door. Signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning may include: Dull headache, Weakness, Dizziness, Nausea or vomiting, Shortness of breath, Confusion, Blurred vision, Loss of consciousness. Updating Your Insurance The American household is changing. Today, it’s not uncommon for older parents to move in with their grown children, and with the combined rise in housing costs and debt from college loans, more college graduates are moving home with their parents. In fact, 47 percent of adults in their 40s and 50s either have a parent aged 65 or older living with them and are raising a child or financially supporting an adult child, according to the Pew Research Center. Along with larger family meals and more loads of laundry, there are important insurance considerations that today’s households need to consider. Making sure you are covered will go a long way to ensure the safety and financial well-being of your loved ones.

When Your Parents Move In You probably remember having a few “tough talks” with your parents when you were growing up. If your parent or an elderly relative is moving in with you, it’s time to have another one of these talks. One of the biggest points to discuss is finances, which includes insurance. You want to be sure your parents are up-to-date with their auto and life insurance premiums. And if your relative is bringing valuable possessions into your home, you may need to update your homeowners policy. Also important is discussing potential long-term healthcare needs and discussing end-of-life wishes. These conversations can be hard, and it’s important to make your loved ones feel cared about, not cared for.

When Adult Children Move Home It’s not often someone in their mid-20s is excited about moving back in with their parents. But 4

As long as your child lives in the same household as you, there is no age limit to how long they can be listed on your auto insurance. However, 26 is now the maximum age that your child can be covered on your health insurance plan. Another insurance consideration is whether to include any of their expensive electronics or other personal belongings on your homeowners insurance policy. If so, will they help pay if the cost of the policy goes up? Maintain Natural Stone

Natural stone adds elegance and style to any home. With a nearly endless array of colors, textures and designs, it’s easy to create a one-of-a-kind look for your kitchen or bath. However, without proper care, that carefully selected natural stone may quickly start to show wear and tear. Not only does natural stone lend a beautifully sophisticated aesthetic, it’s generally regarded as a practical choice because it’s more durable than many other materials. Its resistance to scratches also makes it a more sanitary choice.

However, granite, marble, travertine and other natural-stone and quartz surfaces do require proper care and attention to maintain that luxurious finish. Keep your natural stone in top condition with these tips from the experts at Granite Gold. Clean often. Even if your surface appears clean, the safest bet is to clean it after every meal preparation. The most miniscule particle could have a detrimental effect on your natural stone. Avoid common cleaners and abrasives. They can break down the protective seal and you could be faced with costly repair or replacement. Also, give special attention to the scrubbing pad you use; many are too abrasive for expensive stone counters and leave unsightly scratches. Leave the sponges and pads you use for pots and pans in the sink and instead rely on scrubbing pads designed specifically for natural stone or look for “nonscratch” on the packaging. Seal frequently. You cannot over-seal natural stone surfaces. Frequently sealing granite countertops and all other natural stone surfaces maintains maximum surface protection, penetrating stone surfaces to provide superior, long-lasting resistance to staining, etching and soil buildup. The protective seal is a critical component of natural stone because it prevents harmful substances such as acidic coffee, juice or wine from staining and etching the surface. If you’re not sure whether it’s time to reseal, it’s easy to test. Pour water (about 3 inches in diameter) on the surface and let it sit for 30 minutes. Be sure to do this in several locations, since the integrity of the seal could vary from one area to another. If the water beads, then the stone remains sealed. However, if the stone is penetrated – signified by a dark mark or ring created by the water – it is time to reseal. Be sure to check closely for etching and stains, as you’ll want to fix these issues before the sealant is applied. Polish regularly. Polishing stone provides two great benefits. First, polishing after cleaning will bring out the stone’s natural beauty. Second, it will reinforce the protective seal and provide ongoing protection against water spots and fingerprints. The quickening pace of home sales over the past year included a small rebound from two key segments of buyers who have been missing in action in recent years: first-time buyers and single women. This is according to the National Association of Realtors®’ annual Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers. Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, says, “Young adults are settling down and deciding to buy a home. Demand increased over the past year because of a robust job market for those with a college degree and renter fatigue at a time when homeowners continue to see their equity rise. These factors were why more firsttime buyers said a desire to own a home of their own was the primary reason for their purchase. Even with the affordability challenges many buyers face, the allure of homeownership is not lost among the younger generation. Those under age 35 made up 61 percent of first-time buyer transactions.” As in year’s past, married couples once again made up the largest share of buyers and had the highest income. However, the survey revealed that single women made up more of the buyer pie than in recent years. “Despite having a much lower income ($55,300) than single male buyers ($69,600), single women for years have indicated a strong desire to own a home of their own, as well as an inclination to live closer to friends and family,” says Yun. “With job growth holding steady and credit conditions becoming somewhat less stringent than in past years, the willingness and opportunity to buy is becoming more feasible for many single women.” (NAR)
