Bringing Hope to a Hurting World Giving gifts is a time honored Christmas tradition: God gave the world his only Son, the Magi gave him gifts and Jesus gave us his life. Unfortunately, this gift-giving tradition has been greatly commercialized in our consumerdriven culture. Every year at Redeemer, we want to spend a little less on ourselves and give a little more to make a difference in the lives of those in need. This year we will focus on refugees, on our new International Campus, and on helping young people. In the following pages you will find many practical and significant gifts. Please use a Redeemer offering envelope and designate the item code on the line marked, “Other.” If you are giving a general donation to help with the needs, just denote “Christmas Gift.”
God bless you, and thank you for being part of Hope Has Come.
Make a Great
First Impression A personal touch goes a long way. We want to welcome every new family we can with a home visit and a Welcome Basket. This will include staples (rice, salt, oil) as well as fresh fruits and vegetables (potatoes, onions, apples, oranges, peppers) all conveniently packaged in a laundry basket. “He gives justice to orphans and widows. He shows love to the foreigners living among you and gives them food and clothing. You, too, must show love to foreigners…” (Deuteronomy 10:18-19) •
Welcome Home Basket: $50 (Item Code 1.1)
Personal Gifts And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward. Matthew 10:42
Purchasing Power Refugees typically arrive in the Mohawk Valley with little more than a small bag and the clothes on their backs. They start with no job and with limited skills, but they are eager to build a new life. A gift card is a great way to help them with immediate needs— whether that means a few household items or groceries for the week. • •

Spiritual Food “All over the world this Gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God’s grace in all its truth.” (Colossians 1:6b) Some Americans have so many Bibles, we forget how precious it is to have God’s Word available at our finger tips. Many of these Bibles will go to seekers or newly born again believers.

Warm Sleep On a Cold Night
Most immigrants here have come from tropical or subtropical climates. Many arriving in the fall have little idea of the winter awaiting them in upstate New York! Give the gift of warmth and a good night’s sleep. Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. James 2:15-17 •
Blanket: $25 (Item Code 6.1)
Flip Flops
Won’t Cut it in February It is surprising how many people do not have a decent pair of warm, functional shoes. Also surprising is how many people you can see walking through Utica in the snow with flipflops on. Let’s help change that. •
Shoes: $30 (Item Code 5.1)
Sports Gear You can help to provide the children of immigrant families with hours of healthy, constructive fun. For less than $20, we can provide kids with a soccer ball, shin guards, basketball, or a helmet & knee pad set for riding bikes. •
Balls & Recreational Equipment: $17 (Item Code 7.1)
Communication Cell phones, landlines, texting, email, twitter, facebook… communication is something we sometimes take for granted. When a refugee family arrives, it is difficult for them to even get a landline, since they have no credit history. So much more than merely a convenience, having a phone can also be a safety issue and a significant time saver. Imagine giving up yours! This plan gets them a phone, 240 minutes, and double minutes for life. •
Transportation:
Tracfone: $65 (Item Code 8.1)
I Don’t Drive Yet, But I Could Really Use a Bicycle! After new refugees arrive, it will be at least several months before they learn to drive, get their license, and purchase a car. Until then a bicycle is the best form of transportation and goes a long way in helping them to attain self-sufficiency. • •
Kid Bicycle: $75 (Item Code 9.1) Adult Bicycle: $100 (Item Code 9.2)

Peace for Young Hearts They don’t call them “refugees” for nothing. Many of the children of refugees have been exposed to horrific violence and as a result are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This video curriculum offers training in this internationally acclaimed system to help sufferers deal with issues of forgiveness, self-worth, identity and purpose. Designed by Robi Sonderegger, Ph.D, Rhiannon Bell, D.Psych and Noleen Sonderegger, M.Clin. Psych. More information available at www.familychallenge.com.au •

Help Me go to camp
Think of the difference camps have made in your life or the lives of your children. For some families—perhaps a single-parent home, an unemployed parent, or a refugee family just starting out--the registration fee is a luxury they just cannot afford. But these kids are going through crucial transitions in their lives and desperately need to be connected to God. • • •

Christmas Presents for Redeemer Kids
There are many great charities that work on getting gifts to kids from needy families. Whether they were born over seas or in the USA, we want to make especially sure that we are also helping any families in our own community of faith that are struggling this Christmas season. On the Christmas tree in the lobby, you will find tags that give all the information you need: age, gender and gift ideas. Take the tag, purchase a gift (about $50) and turn it in with the tag at the table in the lobby. Therefore, as we have

opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Galatians 6:10
