Watching a real estate program, we were surprised to hear the buyer’s agent mention Homeowner’s Association (HOA) rules prohibited owners in that FL community from parking an SUV on the property. Oh, and by the way, no outdoor grilling would be permitted. I actually hit the rewind button to make sure I heard that right. An association can dictate what kind of car a homeowner can park in their own driveway or prohibit them from grilling by the swimming pool in their own back yard?

I hadn’t thought much about HOAs since we moved to our current, semirural location. Surprisingly when I did I little digging into the topic, I found an David P. Those are huge numbers and, based on my own limited research, HOAs are a hot button topic with both sides engaging in passionate debate. Needless to say, if you’re considering a property governed by an HOA, it’s in your best interest to know exactly what you’re getting into. On the flip side, houses located in rural areas can come with their own unique challenges. Think septic systems, wells, longer commutes and possible limited access to conveniences many homeowners take for granted. Fair warning, if your neighbor thinks living room furniture belongs on their front porch or they collect junk cars like some ladies collect shoes, you’re pretty much stuck with it. So once again, if you’re considering a rural property, it’s in your best interest to know exactly what you’re getting into. Bottom line? When you’re looking for a place to call home, think beyond wall color and floor plans which are generally easy to change. Location should be the number one item on your list. Take time to research the area, visit the schools, read up on associations, codes, regulations. Before you sign on the bottom line, understand, to the best of your ability, what you’re getting into.
