The next time you’re considering getting your home’s heating and cooling ducts cleaned, consider this: A little caution can protect you from companies that try to scam you. You just have to make sure you’re dealing with a legitimate cleaning service. The nonprofit National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) and “Dateline NBC” recently exposed some companies that use bait and switch tactics to take advantage of consumers. Executive Director John Schulte said, “These scams are a problem for consumers and legitimate businesses. Low prices offered by bad actors make it difficult for consumers to know what to expect, while luring business away from legitimate companies.” He recommends: • Beware of lowball ads that offer “whole house” cleaning for less then $100. This is usually indicative of a classic bait and switch tactic. • Have the ductwork, coils and all components cleaned, and make sure the company agrees to do the work in accordance with NADCA standards. • Be sure this is all documented on the bill of sale. • For more information and to find a certified NADCA member, visit www.nadca.com. Fall is the ideal time to test your home for air tightness. On a windy day, hold a lit incense stick next to your windows, doors, electrical boxes, plumbing fixtures, electrical outlets, ceiling fixtures, attic hatches, and other locations where there is a possible air path to the outside. If the smoke stream travels horizontally, you have located an air leak that may need caulking, sealing, or weatherstripping. * Look for dirty spots in your insulation, which often indicate holes where air leaks into and out of your house. You can seal the holes by stapling sheets of plastic over the holes and caulking the edges of the plastic. * Install rubber gaskets behind outlets and switch plates on exterior walls. * Install storm windows, use shrink wrap window kits and/or install lined drapes. * Close the damper when the fireplace or woodstove is not in use, * Use weather stripping and door sweeps to create weatherproofing seals. * Place heavy duty aluminum foil behind steam radiators to reflect heat into the room. * Insulate hot and cold water lines. * Caulk around windows and doors. * Install an approved water heater blanket. www.Life and Homes .com

"Planning makes a big difference," says Charles Valinotti, senior vice president of insurer QBE. "The better prepared you are, the better you can cope in the aftermath of an emergency." Here are ways to be prepared: * Put together a plan. Meet with your family to discuss the various emergencies that could happen and what should be done in each case. Develop a communication plan if family members become separated. Practice your plan and update it each year.

* Be prepared year-round. Keep a disaster supplies kit - containing at least a one-week supply of food and bottled water - and replace it periodically. And keep vehicles well maintained and full of gas to ensure quick evacuation.

Clutter Buster Beware The Options Flooded Car Have lots of clutter? Start busting it with these 4 simple options:

1. STORE IT IN ITS HOME. Everything in your home or office should have a home--a consistent and appropriate place where that object is normally kept. Some items that you use every day, may be on display and/or readily available for frequent use. Other items, like holiday decorations or out of season clothing, can be stored in an out-of-theway area until needed. When an object strays from its 'home,' it can easily be misplaced, causing stress and frustration. Clutter build-up naturally occurs when items are not kept and/or returned to their homes. 2. GIVE IT. When you have something that you never use, giving it to someone who will make use of it can really brighten your day. Give it to a friend. Pass it on to a relative. When you're in the market for a used car, you need to watch out for flood damage. Every year, tens of thousands of cars are damaged by floodwaters and more than half end up back on the road, sometimes thousands of miles from where the damage occurred. Fortunately, there are telltale signs: • Check the trunk, dashboard and glove compartment for silt, mud, rust and other signs of water damage. See if the upholstery and carpeting match the interior and fit properly. Discolored, faded or stained materials might indicate water damage. • Test the lights, windshield wipers, signals, power outlet, radio, heater and air conditioner several times. • Check the interior of the car for musty odors. Top Tips Color code your keys and locks for easy identification. Dab colored paint on a key and the corresponding lock - or use an adhesive colored dot. No more wondering which key fits which door.

Righty-tighty and Lefty-loosey is the easiest way to remember which direction tightens and which loosens bolts and nuts. Turning most threaded things right, or clockwise, tightens them (rightytighty) and turning them to the left, or counterclockwise, loosens them (lefty-loosey). To determine if paint is of good quality, give it the finger test. If rubbing it between your thumb and fingertip results in a smooth and silky feel, it's high-quality paint. If it feels gritty, it's of poor quality. Create a box or folder to keep owners manuals for everything you buy. Keeping the manuals in one location will ensure you'll have information on hand when needed. Wash your garden tools before storing for winter. Remove rust and add a light coat of oil or selfpolishing floor wax to prevent rust.

How to Repaint a Room in a Weekend 1. Get all of your furniture out of the way by moving it to the center of the room, using plastic sliders on heavy items so you don’t have to lift them. Cover everything with plastic, blankets, or old sheets. Then, put down drop-cloths to protect your floors from stray droplets of paint. 2. Scrub all the surfaces you’ll be painting with a sponge and mild household detergent solution before going to the paint store. That will give them time to dry while you’re out shopping. 3. Making multiple trips to the paint store can consume time, so try to do all of your shopping in just one visit. 4. Buy technologically-advanced top quality 100% acrylic latex interior paint. These durable paints often hide the color that’s underneath quickly and effectively, saving you not only time and effort, but money as well. 5. Tape the edges of the surfaces you’ll be painting to enable you to apply the paint faster. You’ll quickly recover the time spent doing this. And taping will make your finished paint job look a lot neater. 6. Work “top down”: paint the ceiling; then the walls; next, the windows and trim; and, lastly, the baseboards. Following this sequence will help keep just-painted surfaces free of paint spatter or drip marks and cut down time spent on touch-up work.

7. When painting a ceiling or wall, start by “cutting in” a corner section with a paintbrush, applying a 3” band of paint around the edge. This will enable you to quickly fill in the area with a paint roller. Repeat this process in 3-foot increments. 8. Apply the paint liberally. Trying to “stretch” your paint by applying a thin coat is false economy: You might end up needing a second coat to completely hide the original color. 9. Assuming that you purchased top quality 100% acrylic latex paint, your cleanup will be a snap. Being water-based, these paints can be quickly and easily cleaned off of brushes and rollers with plain soap and water. 10. The last time-saver when using top quality latex paint? Not having to wait for the “paint smell” to go away. Eco-friendly latex paints have very little odor, so you can put a freshlypainted room back into service right away.
