Fall Lawn Care Tips

Taking time in the fall to prepare your lawn for the colder months ahead will pay dividends come spring and allow you to enjoy lusher, greener grass when temperatures rise again. Fertilizing Providing nutrients to your lawn before cold weather strikes is good for strengthening roots and increasing the nutrients stored for an earlier spring green. While the top growth of grass stops, grass plants are storing nutrients and energy for the following season. To determine the best ratio of fertilizer for the soil in your yard, you should utilize a soil test. Otherwise, look for fertilizer with a nitrogen-phosphatepotassium (NPK) ratio of 3:1:2 or 4:1:2. When applying the fertilizer, make sure that you follow the application instructions and rate information on the package and use a calibrated spreader to apply the correct amount. It is also a good rule to apply the fertilizer in the fall about 2-3 weeks before the ground freezes so the plant can start to take up some of the nutrients. Instead of pacing the yard with a push spreader, consider a tow-behind spreader attached to your riding lawn mower or garden tractor. An attachment, such as a pull-type spin spreader from John Deere, can quickly distribute fertilizer evenly across your yard.

Mulching If you prefer not to rake or bag grass or leaves, mulching with a mower is an ideal alternative. Be sure to mulch leaves only when they are dry to avoid damp and wet leaves clumping or building up under mower decks. Remember that grass needs sunlight in the fall to help store food for winter, so don’t wait until your lawn is completely matted down with leaves to mulch. A thin layer of mulched leaves is ideal and helps add nutrients to the soil, reducing the need for fertilizer. Selecting the right mower with mulching attachments or features can save a great deal of time and help ensure a consistent layer of mulch across the yard. For example, John Deere 100-Series lawn tractors have three-in-one mowing decks, which allow you to choose to mulch, bag or allow side-discharge. Composting Creating a compost pile allows you to turn organic material into rich soil. The fall season is a good time to create a compost pile with decaying yard matter, such as vegetables, grass clippings and leaves, which can provide nutrient-rich soil for spring planting. For best results, alternate layers of “brown,” or high carbon materials, with grass clippings. Using a rear bagger with your lawn mower or tractor will help make collecting grass clippings a breeze, and adding to your compost pile is as simple as backing up to the spot and unloading. Another optional mower attachment, the lawn sweeper, brushes leaves into a hamper, much like a broom and dustpan.

Using exterior caulk and insulation to seal cracks and openings in the homes exterior can save you a small fortune on heating. They work by stopping outside air from seeping in and by keeping heat from escaping. If you're in the mood to fight spiraling energy costs, begin by doing a walk-around inspection of your home exterior. Keep an eye open for cracks, gaps, or holes - especially where different surfaces meet, or where pipes, vents, or wiring penetrate the walls. Also look for areas where your old caulk may have cracked or pulled away from the surface. If the old caulk is damaged, remove it with a scraper or putty knife. Clean the adjacent surfaces, sand them smooth, and spot prime if any bare wood shows. This will help your caulk adhere properly to create a weather-tight seal. When applying new caulk, select a top quality product - either a water-based all-acrylic or siliconized acrylic caulk (similarly named "silicone" caulks cannot be painted, so they'll be more visible on your home exterior). With a loaded caulk gun in hand, work your way around the house, filling every gap or seam with a generous bead of caulk. Immediately after applying the caulk, "tool" it by running a wet finger over the full length of the bead, using a slight amount of pressure. This will ensure that the caulk fills the entire gap and makes good contact with the adjacent surfaces. Openings that are too large to caulk - typically spaces more than 1/4 " wide - should be filled with a polyurethane foam insulation product. Unlike caulk, which shrinks slightly as it dries, some types of polyurethane foam actually expand after being applied. Do one final walk-around to make sure you haven't missed anything. Aerating Aerating, the process of removing plugs of soil and thatch from the lawn, is ideal in cooler months. It encourages deep rooting, improves water and nutrient penetration, and promotes growth of beneficial soil microorganisms. There are a variety of techniques you can use to penetrate the soil such as spiked shoes or spray-on liquids, but to most effectively aerate soil, attach a dethatcher, or a plug aerator behind a riding mower or tractor to remove plugs of soil from two to three inches deep.

Beware Before Buying For many, finding and buying the right home is still a big part of the American dream.However, that dream home can turn into a nightmare when hidden costs from weather and other types of damage start adding up. It’s not uncommon for consumers to find out about these hidden costs rather late in the process. That’s because until now, buyers had to wait until just before closing to receive a “seller’s disclosure.” This is a document that reveals details about the house the buyers plan to purchase. At that point, it’s likely that a prospective buyer has already paid thousands of dollars for legal fees, inspections, deposits and title fees and may be reluctant to back out of the deal. Fortunately, there is a resource that buyers can call on earlier in the process. Portable Generator Safety Portable generators are useful when temporary or remote electric power is needed, but if used incorrectly, they can cause harm to you and your family. Generator exhaust contains high levels of carbon monoxide, a deadly gas that is tasteless, colorless and odorless. Careful consideration should be taken while operating portable generators or carbon monoxide poisoning can become a deadly risk. To minimize tragedies associated with carbon monoxide poisoning, the experts at the Portable Generator Manufacturers’ Association offer these tips for the safe operation of portable generators: Do not run portable generators inside homes, garages, basements, crawlspaces, sheds or other partially-enclosed spaces, even if using fans or opening doors and windows. Carbon monoxide can quickly build up and linger for hours in these places, even after the generator has been turned off. Only operate a portable generator outside, far away from windows, doors and vents, to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide gas accumulating and potentially being drawn toward occupied spaces.

Install battery-operated carbon monoxide alarms or plug-in alarms with battery backup according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Smoke alarms cannot detect carbon monoxide gas. Always place your portable generator downwind and point the engine exhaust away from occupied spaces. The symptoms of low-level carbon monoxide poisoning can be similar to those caused by other illness such as cold, flu or food poisoning. The Simple DIY Trick To Eliminate Floor Squeaks Do floorboard squeaks date your home past its actual age? Do you avoid walking in some areas due to the noises the floor produces, especially at night when everyone is sleeping? Annoying at best and disruptive to work and sleep at worst, floor creaks are easier to eliminate than you may think. Why do squeaks happen in some areas and not in others? Squeaks occur when shrinks and gaps develop around different flooring elements. For example, in most creaky floors, a nail that was used to fasten the floor has become loose and a squeak happens as a result of the nail rubbing on the sub floor. It’s also possible that wooden planks have loosened from the joist below them and are rubbing against one another.

Whether you simply want to fix the noise that has bothered you for years or you want to eliminate the creaks before putting your house up for sale, researching DIY fixes is a great first step. In the past, home improvement experts advised going underneath a floor to fix a creaky floorboard. This is an effective solution, but is fairly difficult. Furthermore, for homeowners with finished ceilings throughout the home, repairs cannot be made this way because the floor’s interior cannot be accessed.

How does it work? The kit includes a tool that finds the location of the floor joists from above the floor in carpeted floors.
