- Tips To Keep 5 tips for
Your Home Safe safe, stunning outdoor lighting Candles are no longer used for just the occasional dinner party. In fact, only a small percentage of candle fires start in dining rooms. Families are lighting candles in their living rooms, family rooms, bedrooms, dens, and bathrooms. Candle usage has increased fivefold in the past 10 years alone and the number of people killed by house fires started by candles has skyrocketed over the last two decades. In most cases, unattended candles caused those fatal fires. Where do candle fires start? Nearly half of all candle fires start in the bedroom, with mattresses or other bedding items the most likely to go up in flames. 19% start in living rooms, family rooms, or dens, 11% start in bathrooms, 7% begin in kitchens. Major causes of home candle fires include candles left unattended, abandoned or inadequately supervised, some form of combustible material left too close, or children playing with candles. Follow these safety tips to protect your family: • Extinguish all candles when leaving the room or before going to sleep. • Keep candles at least two feet away from items that can catch fire ie. clothing, books, paper, curtains, Christmas trees, and flammable decorations. • Avoid candles with combustible items embedded in or around them. • Never leave wick trimmings, matches, or other material in the candle or holder. • Only use sturdy candle holders made of noncombustible materials. • Do not use candles in places where they could be knocked over by children or pets. • Keep matches, lighters, and candles up high out of reach of children. • Never leave a child unattended in a room with a candle. • Don’t allow children or teens to have candles in their bedrooms/sleeping areas. • Don’t place lighted candles in windows where blinds, curtains, and draperies can catch fire. Avoid open windows where drafts could cause candle wick flames to flare up. • Votives and container candles should be extinguished before the last half inch of wick starts to melt. (DHSES)
(According to a recent Mr. Electric survey, one in 12 U.S. homeowners surveyed do not have outdoor lighting for their house. As the days get shorter here in the northern hemisphere, adding or upgrading outdoor lighting can help homeowners with perfect visibility and comfort. To keep things safe and beautiful, here are five simple tips you can follow this fall. 1. Leverage your lighting for security and visibility- Well-planned outdoor lighting extends your usable living space and deters intruders from prowling your property. To pull off this double duty, pay special attention to ensuring all pathways, social spaces and entrances are illuminated. Instead of motionactivated lighting, consider an always-on approach. This can be a better deterrent before a ne'er-do-well enters your yard. Thanks to LED bulbs, leaving a few outdoor lights on doesn't cost a lot or create a lot of heat. 2. Ensure everything is outdoor-rated- Only use bulbs, fixtures, cords and outlets specifically rated for outdoor use. Fortunately, with the nearinfinite range of outdoor lighting styles on the market, you'll never have to sacrifice on aesthetics. Choosing correctly rated equipment lets you enhance the appeal of your property, highlighting architectural features and landscaping focal points, without risking failure, fire or other calamities. 3. Only use GFCI outlets- GFCI or GFI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter outlet. These outlets will shut off power almost instantly if any plugged-in devices contact water. GFCI outlets have only been required in homes since 1971, according to the National Fire Protection Association. So, if your home was built before then, calling in an electrician is a wise decision. Avoid risky placement- Unless specifically designed for it, outdoor lights shouldn't be directly on grass. Prone to being either wet or
tinder dry, adding electricity to grass just isn't a smart move. If your wiring will be buried, make sure it isn't under anything highly flammable, such as mulch or woodchips. An experienced electrician can help you find safe and attractive solutions, such as installing directly on concrete or in gravel beds. 5. Respect the maximum wattage- Screwing a 100-watt bulb into a fixture with a 75-watt maximum will, at best, waste your money on bulb replacements. You're also likely to cause permanent damage to the fixture itself. To steer clear of these issues, always choose a bulb where the wattage is equal to or less than the fixture's maximum. With LED bulbs, you can get the same or greater illumination as incandescent bulbs with just a fraction of the wattage. When in doubt, call a professional. HELP KEEP THEM SAFE: If a person in crisis is suicidal, details matter: Do the have a plan, or ideas about timing or method? You can call 988 to support their crisis care. 4. HELP THEM CONNECT: When someone is in crisis, connecting them with ongoing support can help establish a safety net. Remind them they can call/text 988 to connect with a trained crisis counselor 24/7. 5 FOLLOW UP: After the immediate crisis is over, check in. That text or call afterwards makes a real difference. Heat Pumps Really Work
in Cold Climates?
Yes. While heat pumps have historically been used in warmer parts of the U.S., newer, modern, advanced technology has been tested and approved as far north as the Arctic Circle. Thousands of homes in New York have already switched to heat pumps designed to work in cold climates without the need for a backup heating system, even on cold winter nights. Most of the myths circulating stem from outdated information – in fact, today’s high-efficiency, cold-climate heat pumps can deliver more than three times the amount of heat than the energy they consume compared to traditional heating systems. Cold-climate heat pumps are all-in-one heating and cooling systems specifically designed to work efficiently in climates like New York. And homeowners are making the switch – in 2022, more than 29,500 heat pump projects were installed across the State, representing 37% growth from 2021. There are two types of heat pumps fully capable of keeping New York homes comfortable and safe year-round: Geothermal (ground source) heat pump systems extract heat from the ground during cold weather via an underground pipe system. The ground remains a constant temperature below the earth’s surface regardless of outside air temperatures. Geothermal heat pumps extract that warmer underground air and distribute it throughout your home as heat. Air source heat pump systems specifically engineered for cold climates have evolved to include features like variable speed, inverter-driven compressor technology and improved defrost-cycle controls that make them reliable options when temperatures dip as low as -15 degrees Fahrenheit. Air source heat pumps extract heat from the air outside and distribute it inside your home, and in the warmer months this process is reversed to remove heat from indoor spaces. Be aware that there are some air source heat pump models that are not rated to perform in 24

cold climates, so be sure to ask your installer about your system specifically. Both heat pump types can provide 100% of a home’s heating and cooling needs, though there are several best practices homeowners should consider for maximum heat pump efficiency during the winter. It is important to work with a NYS Clean Heat participating contractor to ensure your home is efficient and the heat pump system is properly sized and installed to meet your home’s heating needs. Beginning Your Heat Pump Journey Get Your Home Ready: Conduct a free home energy assessment for a top-tobottom look at where your home is wasting energy. You’ll identify the cause of any drafts, inconsistent temperatures, heating and cooling system failures or other issues you may be experiencing. Address any potential sealing and insulation issues to ensure your heat pump operates at maximum efficiency. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority makes it easy to participate in the Residential Energy Assessment Program. Explore Rebates, Tax Credits and Financing: The State, federal government, and electric utilities offer money-saving opportunities related to heat pumps. To be eligible for State rebates through the NYS Clean Heat program, geothermal systems must meet
or exceed the ENERGY STAR® specification, and cold-climate air source heat pumps need to meet certain specifications set by Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) to be qualified to work properly in the extreme cold. When researching air source heat pumps, check that the product you are considering is on NEEP’s cold-climate heat pump product list, or ask your installer for confirmation that the system meets NEEP’s cold-climate specifications. To find available rebates in your area, visit cleanheat.ny.gov. Today’s cold-climate heat pumps are one of the top heating options for almost anywhere on the planet – they provide a level of efficiency and comfort that cannot be matched by other heating systems. Heat pumps also have the lowest carbon emissions of any heating source and eliminate the combustion of fossil fuels, making them a cleaner, healthier and safer alternative.
