Tips For Keeping Your Home Secure While On Vacation

Whether you’re gone for a weekend getaway or an extended trip, taking a few precautions can give you peace of mind and help prevent any unwelcome surprises upon your return.

1. Notify a trusted neighbor or friend: Ask a trusted neighbor or friend to keep an eye on your property, pick up your mail, and alert you or law enforcement in case of any emergencies.

2. Invest in a Home Security System: Home security systems with cameras and sensors can deter potential intruders and provide you with remote access to monitor your home while you’re away. Some systems allow you to receive alerts on your smartphone in case of suspicious activity.

3. Secure Doors and Windows: Lock all doors and windows securely before you leave. Deadbolts or security bars provide added protection. Remember to store spare keys in a safe place, not under the doormat or in other obvious locations.

4. Set Timers for Lights and Electronics: To create the illusion that someone is home, use timers to turn lights, TVs, or radios on and off at different times throughout the day. This can help deter burglars who may be watching for signs of an empty house.

5. Arrange for Lawn Care and Mail Collection: An overgrown lawn or a mailbox overflowing with mail can signal to potential intruders that no one is home. Consider hiring a lawn care service or asking a neighbor to mow your lawn and collect your mail while you’re away.

6. Avoid Sharing Vacation Details on Social Media: Avoid posting photos, travel dates or locations on social media to minimize the risk of burglary. It’s best to post about your vacation details after you're back; not in real-time.

7. Unplug Appliances and Electronics: Unplug non-essential appliances and electronics before you leave. This includes TVs, computers,

chargers, and kitchen appliances that could malfunction in your absence.

8. Check Your Home Insurance Coverage: Before you go on vacation, review your home insurance policy to ensure that you have adequate coverage for theft, vandalism, or other potential risks. Consider adding extra protection if needed.

A little preparation can go a long way in protecting your property and belongings while you’re away.

Housing StrainingCosts

Owners And Renters

Homeowners and renters across the US are struggling with high housing costs, according to the Joint Center For Housing Studies State of the Nation’s Housing 2024 report.

Millions of potential homebuyers have been priced out of the market by high home prices and interest rates, while the number of renters with cost burdens has hit an all-time high. However, a surge in new multifamily rental units is slowing rent growth and increasing single-family construction is starting to lift for-sale inventories. Still, addressing the country's housing crisis, including the record number of people experiencing homelessness, the inadequate housing safety net, and the growing threat of climate change, will require contributions from the private and nonprofit sectors as well as policymakers at all levels of government.

Housing Costs Continue to Rise

Both homeowners and renters struggle with high prices in 2024. On the for-sale side, home prices reached a new all-time high in early 2024 despite persistently elevated interest rates, rising at an annual rate of 6.4 percent in February. With these gains, the US home price index is now a whopping 47 percent higher than since early 2020. The rise in prices has pushed the median sales price to about five times the median household income. Meanwhile, in the rental market, although rent growth slowed to just 0.2

percent year over year in early 2024, rents remain up 26 percent nationwide since early 2020 and are rising in three out of every five markets. (jchs.harvard.edu)

Do Your Part to Protect New York's Lands

New York is home to tens of thousands of acres of State lands to visit, dozens of campgrounds, and thousands of miles of trails across the state for hikers of all abilities.

As you're enjoying our beautiful area this summer, remember small actions can have lasting impacts on delicate plants, wildlife, and landscapes. Research the rules, regulations and recommendations for the places you plan to visit to learn how you can help protect natural resources and nearby communities.

•Know the rules of the area where you will be hiking.

•Many DEC lands do not have trash cans. Don't litter - take your trash home with you.

•Do not remove or damage trail markers.

•Be careful with campfires and make sure they are allowed where you are camping.

•Know the best place - or way - to go to the bathroom.

•Stay on trails. Avoid stepping on vegetation, especially sensitive high-elevation plants.

•Walk through, not around, mud and puddles on trails to avoid eroding and widening trails.

•Stay off steep, high elevation trails during muddy seasons.

•After a hike, shake or brush off clothing and clean boot treads before getting into your vehicle to avoid spreading seeds of invasive species. (dec.ny.gov)
