When we travel to my wife's hometown in PA, we are reminded of how many brick houses populate that area compared to our CNY region. It's common to see street after street of brick homes since clay is abundant in that region of PA and there's always been plenty of coal or natural gas to fire it. "Because of its weight, shipping brick can be expensive, making the product less affordable in areas of the country that are not close to brick plants," explains architect Joel Cluskey. Having manufacturing plants in that vicinity has historically made brick masonry construction a more viable option. With few exceptions, cost is generally a determining factor when choosing materials for construction and remodeling projects. Raw material prices appear to be leveling off after a few years of eye-popping, wallet-draining increases and while costs typically ebb and flow seasonally, prices aren't expected to go back to pre-pandemic prices - at least this year. If home improvement projects are on your radar, industry experts say it will likely be in your best interest to work on smaller projects and projects with higher Return On Investment (ROI) values while you save and plan for larger projects. Suggestions include kitchen updates, interior painting, replacing hardware throughout the home, landscaping, and other budget-friendly updates. Small changes make a large difference. What To Do Natural disasters—floods, tornadoes, wind, and ice storms—can cause substantial damage to life and property. Too often, policyholders receive less from insurance policies than they expect because their property is not insured to its full value or they do not understand exactly what type of damage is covered. After a disaster damages or destroys your property, you will have many questions and be faced with many decisions. Concerns about temporary shelter, emergency repairs, and the costs of restoring or rebuilding your home can be overwhelming. Although you have purchased insurance, you may have questions about how to fill out a claim form or how to best settle your claim. What should I do first after a loss? Notify your insurance agent as soon as possible. Your insurer may have insurance company representatives on the scene immediately following a major disaster to speed up the handling of claims. Notify your insurance company representative of any losses. If you must vacate your home, leave word where you can be contacted. In the event of a major disaster, state and federal agencies will establish Disaster Assistance Centers to provide a variety of disaster relief programs to the public. Information about the location of the disaster assistance center and any toll-free assistance numbers will be published in local newspapers and broadcast on local radio and television stations. Take steps to protect property. Make temporary repairs to protect the property from further damage. Keep receipts of what you paid for temporary repairs and include them in your insurance claim. Permanent repairs must wait until the insurance adjuster has had a chance to assess the damage. An adjuster is a person

professionally trained to assess the damage. Note: Do not throw out damaged furniture or other expensive items until the adjuster has seen them If it is necessary for you to move into a motel or apartment temporarily because of damage caused by a peril covered by your policy, your insurance company will pay reasonable and necessary additional living expenses. Your insurance company will also advance you money immediately if you need to replace major household items to continue living in your home. The payments will be part of your final settlement. How much will my insurance company pay for my household contents and other personal property? Most insurance policies pay the actual cash value. For example, it might cost $1,000 to replace a sofa at today’s prices. If the average useful life of a sofa is 20 years and your sofa was 10 years old on the day it was destroyed, the insurance company would pay you $500. If you paid an extra premium for replacement cost coverage on your personal contents, the insurance company will first pay you the actual cash value as described above. Once you have actually replaced the items and submitted your receipts, the insurance company will pay you the difference. Using the above example, the insurance company would initially pay you only $500 for your damaged sofa. After you buy the new one for $1,000 and present the receipt to your insurer, the insurance company would reimburse you another $500—the difference between the actual cash value and the replacement cost. Some insurance companies also use replacement services to obtain certain items for you, such as appliances. Keep all receipts as you begin replacing damaged items. It may be advisable to submit accumulated receipts to the insurance company every two weeks rather than sending them in one at a time. Most policies require you to replace your household contents and personal property within a specified time period from the date of loss. If you cannot meet this time period, ask your adjustor for an extension in writing. You may also submit a claim for storage costs incurred until your home is ready for occupancy. Scams

When you’re looking for an apartment or vacation rental, you’re probably looking at price, location and amenities. Scammers know that, so they make up fake rental listings they know will grab your attention — and money — before you discover there isn’t a place waiting for you. Scammers copy the pictures and descriptions of online rental listings, replace the agent’s contact information with their own, and post the phony ads on a new site. If you call or email about the rental you’ll reach a scammer, who may take your money for an application fee, deposit, first month’s rent, or vacation rental charge. Then, the scammer disappears, and you’re left with nothing. Search online for the rental location’s address, together with the name of the property owner or rental company. If other ads come up for the same address, but with a different owner or rental company name, that’s a sign of a scam. Look for the name of the rental company and search the rental company’s website yourself to see if the property is listed there too. If it isn’t, the ad you found may be a scam. Scammers make up listings for places that aren’t for rent or don’t exist. The fake ads might offer surprisingly low rent or amazing amenities. When you ask to see the rental, the fake owner might claim to be out of the country, or give another excuse for not showing the property, and may rush you into a quick decision. The fake owner might tell you to send money by wire transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency to pay your application fee, deposit, or first month’s rent and promise to get you the keys right away. Except, after you pay, the person you’ve been dealing with will disappear with your money. Don’t send payment for a property you’ve never seen, or to a person you’ve never met in person. If you can’t see the apartment or sign a lease before you pay, keep looking. If you notice a rental listing scam, report it to your local law enforcement agency and the website where the ad was posted. (consumer.ftc.gov) March

Improvements This Year?

Start At The Top

At first glance, the value of some home improvements can be hard to see - particularly when the improvements are in the attic. While a gleaming kitchen backsplash, an expansive patio deck or luxury spa bath are all pleasing to the eye, the value of other home improvements may best be appreciated through improved indoor comfort. Installed in the attic area, insulation and ductwork are two examples of often overlooked upgrades that can impact comfort as well as energy savings. The EPA estimates that homeowners can save up to 15% on heating and cooling costs (or an average of 11% on total energy costs) by air sealing their homes and adding insulation in attics, floors over crawl spaces, and accessible basement rim joists. Installing adequate levels of attic insulation and repairing or replacing attic ductwork can help address the root cause of problems such as increased dust, hot/cold rooms, or high energy bills. But as the attic area is infrequently accessed, how do you know if a problem exists? Let's start with insulation. Simply confirming its presence in the attic is not enough. Following are some signs that your home's attic may need additional insulation: •Hot or cold ceilings, walls or rooms •Uneven temperatures in a home that cause HVAC systems to run more frequently •High heating or cooling bills compared to similarly sized homes in the area A sufficient amount of attic insulation, typically measured in inches, is necessary to help protect against warm air moving into colder parts of the building envelope. A qualified HVAC technician should be able to evaluate your attic and help you 12

understand how much energy you could conserve by insulating to a specified thickness. For example, contractors designated as AirCare® Professionals are trained by Owens Corning and equipped with tools to assess insulation levels and explain how your home's attic insulation compares to recommended standards. Leaks and poor connections in attic ductwork can also lead to problems in other parts of the home. According to ENERGY STAR about 20% of the air that moves through the duct system is lost due to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts. Tightly sealed and well-insulated ducts found in qualified homes can reduce annual utility bills by $120 or more. Following are some indicators of a problem with a home's attic ductwork: •Spikes in energy bills •Rooms that are too hot or too cold •Rooms that have a musty odor

•Heating or cooling equipment that cycles on/off more frequently as the system works harder to heat/cool spaces due to lost air • Increased levels of dust AirCare® Professionals are trained to evaluate the pressure of air running through your home's ductwork and may use special thermal technology tools that allow you to "see" where air is escaping. He or she also will evaluate the system for loose connections or areas where air may be leaking out of the system.
