This Christmas
Mend a quarrel. Seek out a forgotten friend. Write a love letter. Share some treasure. Give a soft answer. Encourage youth. Keep a promise. Find the time. Forgive an enemy. Listen. Apologize if you were wrong. Think first of someone else. Be kind and gentle. Laugh a little. Laugh a little more. Express your gratitude. Gladden the heart of a child. Gladden the heart of a senior. Take pleasure in the beauty and wonder of life. Speak your love. Speak it again. Speak it still once again.

With Boughs Simple Holiday
Of Safety
Follow some common sense to keep your Christmas tree fresh and electrical lights safe. If you decorate with a real tree Make sure it’s fresh. Needles should not be dropping or coming off easily. Try this: take hold of a branch between your thumb and forefinger about 6 inches from the tip. Pull your hand toward you, allowing the branch to slip through your fingers. Needles should not come off. When you get your tree home Cut a few inches off the bottom of the stem and immediately place the tree in water, even if you do not yet intend to decorate it. Water daily. Decorate your tree with new led lights Unlike traditional incandescent bulbs or tiny lights, leds do not get hot. They also use 75 to 90 percent less electricity for the same amount of light and come in a wide range of sizes, colors and lighting patterns.
Budget Tips
Americans will have lots to celebrate this holiday season, with unemployment rates at an all-time low and consumer confidence on the rise. According to The Annual Retail Sales Forecast for the Holiday Season from Deloitte, retailers have their sights on sales of more than $1.1 trillion. We all get caught up in the spirit of giving, yet the most wonderful time of year is also one of the most stressful financially. But holiday spending doesn’t have to break the bank - a little planning can let you enjoy and be merry.
Here’s a checklist to get started: Budget for big purchases • Credit cards: Divide up the big-ticket items. Buy them across several off-season months and pay your balance in full.
Carefully inspect each light and the cord Cracked and loose bulbs and frayed or bare wires can shock or start a fire.
• Free shipping: Some online retailers offer free shipping with orders over a certain amount. In late December, some retailers have been known to offer free shipping days with guaranteed delivery by Christmas.
Do not overload wall outlets or extension cords According to the NFPA and the Electrical Safety Foundation International, electrical fires are one of the leading causes of structure fire annually.
• Delayed financing: Look for store credit card promotions that offer low interest rates or delayed financing on large purchases. Pay it down over time without incurring interest.
Always unplug your indoor holiday lights before leaving home or going to bed. Have your outdoor lights on a timer to save energy and reduce the risk of fire. (Tipmont.Org)
• Online tools: Struggling to budget alone? Explore online services like Nummo, which can help you consolidate your accounts and keep track of your finances.
Save with coupons and deals • Save: There’s always the old-fashioned way of saving a little money each month throughout the year, and then spending what you’ve saved. Or save in advance for the more expensive items. • Credit cards: Redeem credit card points for gift cards you can use for your holiday shopping; alternatively, offer up specific store gift cards as a present. • Delayed offers: Retailers are tracking what you do online, and often if you leave something in your shopping cart, the retailer will come back with a reminder followed by a discounted offer. • In-store shopping days: Black Friday has always been a big shopping day, so you might want to ask your favorite retailers what they have planned ahead of time. Some big-box retailers begin their Black Friday promotions on the Wednesday before, with extended store hours, and might even be open on Thanksgiving. Also, don’t forget to shop local on Small Business Saturday - your favorites stores may have the best bargains yet. • Online shopping days: Online retailers offer significant discounts on days like Cyber Monday and Small Business Saturday. Buy now, pay later • Credit card rates: If you are going to apply for a new card, check introductory offers for rates, balance transfer opportunities and delayed financing options. • Store credit cards: Often when you open a card at checkout, you receive a discount on your entire purchase. Store cards also offer coupons and deals throughout the holiday season if you use your store credit card. That said, make sure not to keep a balance for long, as store credit cards can have higher interest rates. Holiday spending still causing you stress? The experts at Nummo can help you manage, maintain and improve your financial health for the holidays and beyond. (BPT)

Garage Door Insulation
Good Idea?
Questions regarding garage insulation often come up this time of year. “Will insulating my garage make it more comfortable?” “Will adding insulation to my garage save me money?” “Is it worth it? According to Green ID, typically adding insulation to your garage is an unnecessary home upgrade. Adding insulation to your garage will not save you money on bills. Of course, if you have rooms bordering your garage or above it then that garage wall should be insulated. Insulating the wall that separates the room and the garage will protect that room from being effected by the garage’s temperature. If insulating your garage is more about comfort and less about savings, then we completely encourage it! If you’re one of those people who enjoys working in the garage then insulating the space might be a good idea. Insulating the garage will help you keep the warm or cool air inside without it escaping and being influenced by the outdoor temperature. Just be aware that that tempered air will escape immediately when the garage door is opened. Some homeowners will insulate their garages during construction because they know that they’d eventually like to turn it into a bedroom years down the road. This is a fine idea as long as you’re using insulation that will not deplete over time like microfiber or spray foam. (hes.lbl.gov)
newsShorts Protect Your Family from
Carbon Monoxide
Poisoning
Proper installation, operation, and maintenance of fuel-burning appliances in the home is the most important factor in reducing the risk of CO poisoning. • Have your home heating systems (including chimneys and vents) inspected and serviced annually by a trained service technician. • Never use portable generators inside homes or garages, even if doors and windows are open. Use generators outside only, far away from the home. Never bring a charcoal grill into the house for heating or cooking. Do not barbeque in the garage. • Never use a gas range or oven for heating. Open the fireplace damper before lighting a fire and keep it open until the ashes are cool. An open damper may help prevent build-up of poisonous gases inside the home. • Install battery-operated CO alarms or CO alarms with battery backup in your home outside separate sleeping areas. • Know the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning: headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, and confusion. • If you suspect that you are experiencing CO poisoning, get fresh air immediately. Leave the home and call 911 for assistance. You could lose consciousness and die from CO poisoning if you stay in the home. Get medical attention immediately and inform medical staff that CO poisoning is suspected. Call the Fire Department to determine when it is safe to reenter the home. (cpsc.gov)
Slower Growth
Anticipated In Home
Remodeling After several years of solid acceleration, annual growth in national home improvement and repair spending is expected to soften in 2019. According to the Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity (LIRA) released today by the Remodeling Futures Program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. The LIRA projects that year-over-year increases in residential remodeling expenditures will reach a decade high of 7.7 percent this year and then start to drift downward to 6.6 percent through the third quarter of 2019. “Rising mortgage interest rates and flat home sales activity around much of the country are expected to pinch otherwise very strong growth in homeowner remodeling spending moving forward,” says Chris Herbert, Managing Director of the Joint Center for Housing Studies. “Low for-sale inventories are presenting a headwind because home sales tend to spur investments in remodeling and repair both before a sale and in the years following.” “Even so, many other remodeling market indicators including home prices, permit activity, and retail sales of building materials continue to strengthen and will support above-average gains in spending next year,” says Abbe Will, Associate Project Director in the Remodeling Futures Program at the Joint Center. “Through the third quarter of 2019, annual expenditures for residential improvements and repairs by homeowners is still expected to grow to over $350 billion nationally.” (jchs.harvard.edu)

12 Tips For a
No-Worries Noel The fun, festive activities during the holiday season make it a favorite time of year for many people.
At the risk of sounding like a Grinch, though, all that festivity can lead to unintentional safety hazards. For example, some 30 percent of all home fires and 38 percent of home fire deaths occur over December, January and February, reports the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI). Fortunately, awareness is half the battle. As you enjoy the holidays this year, think about best practices for keeping you and your family safer.
1. Don’t let the holidays zap your energy. Not to shock you, but it’s crucial to keep your hands dry (and avoid standing in water) when touching decorations, gifts or other gadgets powered by electricity. You should install ground-fault circuit interrupters anywhere inside or outside water and electricity may come in contact.
combustibles such as wadded-up giftwrap if not used correctly. Turn them off when you leave the room or go to sleep.
5. Get that holiday glow. Instead of the open-flame candles that inadvertently spark holiday décor each year, consider battery-operated candles. Remember to blow out candles when you leave the room.
6. Best gift for your family is to upgrade to Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter breakers or outlets. This smart technology temporarily disables circuits when detecting potentially dangerous electric leaks. It’s estimated that half of electrical fires that occur every year could be prevented by AFCIs. All upgrades should be completed by a qualified electrician.
7. Avoid getting frazzled. Worn-cord 2. Sleep tight, but electronics-free. TLying down for a long winter’s nap? Stash cordless and corded appliances elsewhere to rule out overheating. A hot phone under a sack of feathers could spell disaster.
3. Install tamper-resistant receptacles. These electric outlets feature internal shutters that keep curious children from inserting objects.
4. Enjoy (but monitor) the warmth of the season. Space heaters come in handy for banishing winter chill, but they can overheat, spark, tip over and/or ignite 18

warning: Avoid pinching electric cords between windows, rugs, carpets or furniture, since that can wear them down and possibly cause overheating and ignition.
8. Even outlets experience holiday stress. Multi-outlet power strips and extension cords are handy for decorations, phones, cooking gear and new gift gadgetry, but plugging in too many things can over-tax your home’s electrical capacity. Never use an extension cord or power strip for heaters, as this could cause cords to overheat and result in a fire.
9. Decorate wisely. Consider fire hazards before draping that garland over a fireplace mantle, plugging in the frayed cord that lights up your vintage Santa or arranging pine wreaths around your candles. Check decorations for safety listing labels and never connect more than three strings of lights.
10. Give lit decorations a holiday break. Reduce the likelihood of fire by simply shutting everything off when there’s no one home (or awake) to enjoy them. Half of home fire deaths occur between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., reports the NFPA
11. Be busy as an elf about damage control. When decorating, check for loose or bare wires, cracked or damaged sockets, wobbly connections, broken or sharp edges and other hazards. And it may be time to toss that cheesy 1970s version of St. Nick.
12. More Christmas tree, more water. If you put up a real tree, make sure you water it daily. A dried-up pine tree is nothing but kindling. And an unfortunate 260 home fires in the U.S. start with Christmas trees each year, on average. The Electrical Safety Foundation International wishes everyone a safe, warm and happy holiday. (BPT) -
