They’re at it again. Those gutsy “experts” are putting their heads together and issuing predictions for what path we can expect the housing market to take in 2013. Since their forecasts were made while dangling over the much-debated fiscal cliff, it’s not surprising they offered nearly as many disclaimers as predictions. Watch for rising home and rent prices, suggests The Fiscal Times, along with more short sales, fewer foreclosures, an increase in first-time home sales and rising mortgage interest rates. The days of stellar foreclosure deals have come to an end, they say, but for those with the nerve to trudge through the process, short sale deals will abound.

The chief economist of Fannie Mae suggests we can expect overall housing and mortgage activity to gain momentum in 2013. Market Watch credits low interest rates for an upsurge in 15-year mortgages which will enable homeowners to build equity faster than borrowers with longer-term mortgages. That sounded promising until they continued with; “That means they could be more likely to get approved for home equity loans and borrow a larger amount against their home.” Sounds familiar. How soon we forget.

Count The Cost of DIY Before tackling any home improvement project homeowners should always consider total dollar cost, safety, and convenience, in addition to the
