(NAPSI)—Protecting your home against break-ins may be easier than you fear. Here are a few hints that can help:

• Maintain your landscaping: Don’t let overgrown shrubs give a criminal a place to hide. Keep trees

• Your house never goes on vacation: A vacation can make your home an easy target. Never post on social media sites that you are going away. To deter trouble, invest in some inexpensive timers, which can be set up with staggered timing on multiple lamps and in multiple rooms to mimic a realistic lighting pattern. Visit the post office or fill out a form online to have your mail held while you’re away. Talk to your neighbors to let them know you’ll be gone, and if your trip overlaps with trash day, ask if they can move your bins out for pickup and take them in afterward. • Upgrade door locks: Add dead bolts to any doors that don’t have them, including the garage and shed. Dead bolts are significantly harder to force open than the more common spring bolts found in many doorknobs. • Fortify windows: Glass windows are one of the most vulnerable areas of any home and intruders often target windows if doors are locked and secured. Whenever you’re away or asleep, close them and install locks on any windows that don’t have them. You can also get security window film. One manufacturer, 3M, offers security films designed to hold broken glass together. The films prevent shattered glass from flying into the house, reducing potential injury. Tests have shown that windows protected with security window film can deter intruders for as long as two minutes-giving police additional response time. Security window films also reject up to 99 percent of harmful UV rays, reducing the effects of fading on your furnishings, and block IR rays, keeping heat out of your house. Food Gardening in the U.S. at the Highest Levels in More Than a Decade During the past five years there's been a significant shift toward more Americans growing their own food in home and community gardens. 35% of all households in America, or 42 million households, are growing food at home or in a community garden. That's a 17% increase and represents the highest level of food gardening in more than a decade, according to a special National Gardening Association report. The report shows that more young people, particularly millennials (ages 18-34), are the fastest growing population segment of food gardeners. Additionally, there was a 29% increase in food gardening by people living in urban areas and two million more households also reported participating in community gardening in 2013 than 2008, a 200% increase in five years. Additional highlights from the 5-year report include: 1 in 3 households are now growing food - the highest overall participation and spending levels seen in a decade. Americans spent $3.5 billion on food gardening in 2013 - up from $2.5 billion in 2008 - a 40% increase in five years. 76% of all households with a food garden grew vegetables, a 19% increase since 2008. From 2008 to 2013 the number of home gardens increased by 4 million to 37 million households,

while community gardens tripled from 1 million to 3 million, a 200% increase. Households with incomes under $35,000 participating in food gardening grew to 11 million - up 38% from 2008. Good news: An increasing number of Americans are recycling their trash to give it another life. In fact, more than 35 percent ofAmerica’s waste is recycled into new products. One reason may be that with the convenience of curbside pickup and the efficiency of single-stream sorting, recycling is easier today than ever before. When it comes to that takeout pizza box, toss the greasy bottom in the trash—or compost it and recycle the clean top. • The numbers found on plastic items are identification codes for the type of plastic used to make them—but they don’t tell you whether they can be recycled. • When you recycle used plastic bottles, you can leave the caps on. They can be recycled and repurposed into materials used to make carpets, jackets and other useful items. Just be sure to clean the bottle as thoroughly as possible before recycling. • Plastic shopping bags can be recycled—but don’t throw them in a curbside bin. They can jam up the sensitive sorting machinery at the recycling facility. See if the grocery store you got them from will take them back for recycling. • Nonrigid plastics such as garden hoses and plastic sheets are usually not recyclable and can also damage sorting equipment. “People who don’t have curbside recycling pickup should ask for it,” urges Sharon H.
