Tub-less Bathrooms

Trending

Master baths top most homeowners’ lists and four in ten will be skipping the tub, according to a Houzz Bathroom Remodeling Survey. New light sources are key: Nearly half of respondents are adding a window, four in ten are adding a lighted vanity, and one in ten are adding a skylight. Seven percent are even spicing up the shower with LED lights in their showerhead.

High-efficiency toilets dominate: Overwhelmingly, new toilets will be high efficiency and more than one quarter of younger homeowners are choosing tankless and wall mounted options.

Double sinks on the rise: More than half of homeowners will have double sinks in their master bathroom.

Showers stay glassy: Glass shower enclosures are the clear choice with frameless glass topping the list for master baths. Shower curtains are banned from most masters but remain popular for other full baths.

Rain showers skew younger: When it comes to showerheads, homeowners under 45 are more likely to choose rain and multiple showerheads in the master bath while those 55 and older prefer hand showers and sliding bars.

While wallpaper is out in most bathrooms, homeowners are eight times more likely to use it in their powder room. Hardwood is four times more likely in the powder room, often extending from an entry or great room. Other features more common in this bathroom are pedestal sinks and furniture-like cabinets. Umbrella Insurance: Are You Adequately Covered?

If you have auto insurance, you probably think you have all the coverage you need for yourself, your spouse and your teenage drivers. Likewise, your homeowners insurance will take care of repair costs in case the pipes burst or there’s a fire. But what happens if you get sued?

After your auto or homeowners liability coverage is exhausted, an umbrella policy is applied to cover outstanding expenses, Valinotti says. For example, if you are liable for $400,000 worth of damage and your auto insurance pays a maximum $300,000 in medical expenses per accident, the umbrella policy would pick up the remaining $100,000. Umbrella insurance is similar to homeowners insurance, Valinotti says. If a guest winds up hospitalized after dining at your home due to your negligence and sues you for $350,000, though your homeowner’s policy only covers the first $300,000 in losses, the umbrella coverage would take care of the remaining $50,000. Since it is a form of personal insurance, an umbrella policy will not protect you from lawsuits related to your business. It also will not cover accidents caused by high-risk activities like drag racing.

If your 17-year-old son is involved in a car wreck that seriously injures a neighbor, or if a child gets hurt in the backyard swimming pool, you could face a mountain of medical and legal expenses. If those expenses exceed the coverage provided by your insurance policies, you would be responsible for covering the remaining costs.

Umbrella policies typically provide from $1 million to $5 million of additional coverage. To purchase an umbrella policy, you must have insurance that provides a specific amount of maximum payout. So you may need to increase your auto or homeowners coverage to qualify for an umbrella plan.

In these situations, an umbrella policy can be a lifesaver. Umbrella insurance is a supplemental personal liability policy that provides coverage above and beyond the liability coverage provided in your homeowners and auto policies. An umbrella policy shields your existing and future assets including wages, an inheritance or other windfalls. It covers you for accidents on your property or car accidents caused by you or your dependents.

In some locations, a policy providing $1 million in coverage will run about $350. The actual cost

Contractor Tips

Never pay the full price up front – Establish a payment schedule and adhere to it. Withhold final payment until the entire project is completed to your satisfaction and all required inspections and certificates of occupancy are finalized. Get everything in writing – State law requires a contractor to provide a written contract for home improvement work. The contract should include a time line for work to be completed, a payment schedule and specifics about the project – such as types or brands of materials. On larger projects, architect or engineer plans should specify virtually every detail. Remember any verbal changes to the project must be added to the written contract. The contractor is only bound by what is in the contract. Keep copies for your records. Know where your payments are going – Contractors are required to deposit progress payments in an escrow account. The payments are to be used solely for your project, any withdrawal must bear a “reasonable relationship” to the work completed. The contractor can otherwise obtain bond insurance to protect your money. Know which option your contractor will use. Never do business with a contractor who is unwilling to abide by any of these conditions. Even if the contractor seems reputable, it simply is not worth the risk. With the demand for electricity and natural gas rising, right along with energy costs, American homeowners can easily spend hundreds of dollars a month on utility bills. "From air conditioning larger homes to powering today's high-tech electronics, we are using more energy than ever and that is certainly hitting many homeowners in their pocketbooks," says Bobby DiFulgentiz, an energy efficiency expert with Lennox Industries, a leading manufacturer of home heating and cooling equipment. "But there are ways to stretch your dollar further by evaluating how you spend money on energy and making a few simple, smart, energy-efficient home improvements." DiFulgentiz explains that there are some practical tips and advice that can help the average homeowner find $500 in energy savings in five different rooms of the house.

* $215 in the living room. Replace your five most frequently used incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs for a savings of $65 each year. These bulbs use less energy and can last up to 10 times longer. In addition, install an ENERGY STAR qualified programmable thermostat, such as the Lennox iComfort Wi-Fi thermostat, which can help control the temperature while you're away from home or at night when you're sleeping. When used properly, these thermostats can save as much as $150 per year in energy costs. * $145 in the bathroom. Replace your existing shower head with a new 2.5-gallon-per-minute (low-flow) shower head. The new water efficient shower head coupled with a 10-minute shower will save five gallons of water over a typical bath and up to $145 each year on electricity used to heat the water. * $74 in the laundry room. To save hot water, and the $24 to $40 in fuel that it takes to heat that 18

water each year, wash your clothes in cold water. Be sure to choose a laundry d e tergent that is formulated for use in cold temperatures. Save another $34 each year by cleaning the lint trap in your clothes dryer before every load of laundry, which will help increase the drying efficiency of the machine. * $36 in the basement or utility room. Lower the temperature on your hot water heater from 145 degrees to 120 degrees - the only place you'll notice the difference is on your utility bill. In fact, this slight reduction in temperature can save the average homeowner between $36 and $61 each year. * $35 in the kitchen. To keep your hard-earned money from literally going down the drain, be sure to repair faucet leaks at the kitchen sink. Hot water leaking at a rate of one drip per second can waste up to 1,661 gallons of water annually and up to $35 in electricity or natural gas. Total savings: $505 (or more in some cases) In addition, since heating and cooling accounts for nearly 50 percent of the average home's utility bill - or up to 50 cents of every dollar - and is typically the largest energy expense - it's

important to be sure to schedule annual routine maintenance on your heating and cooling system to ensure it's running as efficiently as possible. If the air conditioning system is more than 10 years old or the furnace is more than 15 years old - the average life spans of cooling and heating units - consider replacing them with a new, ENERGY STAR-qualified system that will be more energy efficient and can help lower utility bills. For example, by replacing an old 10 SEER (seasonal energy efficiency rating) cooling system with a 26 SEER system, which is more than twice as efficient, homeowners can save more than $2,700 over a five-year period.
