Costing You Money? Nearly all modern homes have insulation throughout the living spaces, but garages commonly get overlooked. Because the garage is the last barrier between your home and the outdoors, it’s important to ensure the insulation is adequate. You can do a few simple things to make sure your garage is insulated properly. First, it’s important to ensure that the door leading from your home to the garage is sealed properly. If air leaks through the cracks around the door, it’s nearly as problematic as leaving the door wide open. Weather-stripping kits are available to insulate the edges of your door. Some are made to just go along the bottom of the door, and some fit around the edges to prevent any air leaks. Other areas to consider when checking your garage’s energy efficiency are the ceiling and the garage door threshold. If there is a room above your garage, it may be beneficial to bolster the insulation in the garage’s ceiling to help keep the living space above it comfortable. For the threshold, installing a rubber seal-strip on the floor where the garage door closes helps prevent air leaks, and keeps out insects and rodents. That said, one of the most important areas to examine is the garage door itself. While installing a pre-insulated garage door can cost up to a thousand dollars or more, and requires a skilled contractor, there is a simple and inexpensive DIY solution to insulate your garage - garage door insulation kits. Home owners can easily insulate their existing garage doors with these kits, which are readily available in leading home improvement stores or online. These affordable and easy-to-use kits are made to fit standard garage door sizes and can be cut to fit non-standard sizes. With prepackaged insulation, do-it-yourselfers can insulate their garage door in less than an hour, at a cost of less than $100. Kits use energy-efficient

Homeowners do not need technical skills to install garage door insulation. Easy Tips To CHILL Out
Winter’s frigid temperatures are on their way, and if you wait until the cold hits to finally start winterizing your home, it may already be too late to prevent home damage. “You need to winterize your home just as you would winterize your car,” says Bill Loden, president of the American Society of Home Inspectors. To help you properly winterize your home and prepare for the colder months, the ASHI advises you to CHILL by following these tips: * C: Caulk cracks to stop chilly drafts. Worn-out weather stripping around doors and windows allows cold air to seep into the home, which increases heating costs. * H: Hustle on important repairs. Get going on those tricky repairs, such as putting insulation around your pipes. Not sure where to start? ASHI recommends a home inspection approximately every four years; this can point you in the right direction.
* I: Inspect your fireplace and flue. Test your fireplace flues for tight seals. If you’re feeling a breeze even when the damper is closed, the flue could be warped, worn or even rusted. * L: Look for deck decay and damage. Fixing any splintering, decay or insect damage on your deck this fall can prevent further deterioration during the winter. * L: Light your fireplace and chill out. First check your smoke alarms. You probably will find all of your smoke alarms have ionization detectors. Throw all of them in the trash, even if they are brand new. Replace them with photoelectric alarms. Ionization alarms will let you know when you have burned the toast, but they may not alarm you if you have a deadly, smoldering fire in the middle of the night. “Before another severe winter sweeps through, homeowners must get serious about scheduling a home inspection to determine what unnoticed repairs may be necessary,” says Loden. Start with a fairly low temperature and keep checking and increasing as you go along. One or both of these should do the trick. Then wet it down and peel back the “V” — and pound in your nail or hook. When you wish to get rid of the hook, remove it, dampen the “V” and smooth it back in place. November

Playing It Safe In The Play Area Children will be playing indoors now that the weather is cooler. Keeping their play area safe can be easier if you heed a few hints: 1. Check that each piece is sturdy and stable and won’t tip over onto your child. You may want to attach the furniture to the wall.
2. Make sure there’s enough storage space. Lots of low, open storage bins, baskets and shelves mean there’s little need to reach or climb. All furniture should have smooth surfaces and rounded corners. 3. Children love to play on the floor, so make sure it’s easy to keep clean and soft. Non-slip rugs on top of resilient or wood flooring can be a nice option. 4. Stop shock risk. Use outlet plates and covers that can’t be easily removed and are too large to become choking hazards. Use window stops that will let the window open no more than four inches and install window guards so children can’t fall out. Just be sure adults and older children can open them easily in case of fire. Never depend on screens to keep children safe. Open windows from the top whenever possible and don’t put furniture the kids can climb on close to any windows. 6. Replace older window coverings with today’s safer products to avoid the potential danger of window treatments with cords. Linda Jovanovich of the American Hardwood Information Center agrees and reminds us that, "From intricate crown mouldings and filigreed fireplace mantels to traditional wainscoting and baseboard trim, generations of designers and homeowners have counted on hardwood mouldings and millwork to add warmth, character, and beauty to their favorite living spaces." So let's get started.
Where has all the millwork gone? Years ago, most American homes were built with at least a minimum level of interior ornamentation. Builders used hardwood details to make each residence unique, reflecting the individuality and taste of their owners. Unfortunately, after World War II, the popularity of millwork began to wane. Builders sacrificed craftsmanship for speed in order to keep pace with an unprecedented demand for new homes in the country's booming suburbs. Today, most new homes in America continue to be built with time and cost-efficiency in mind, leaving homeowners with few options for endowing their residences with a sense of individuality. But that doesn't mean homeowners have to settle for cookie-cutter designs.
What's a homeowner to do? Susan Muschweck, a Pittsburgh-based interior designer, says painting walls and upgrading floors
is a great way to dress up a listless space, but for many clients, she often suggests another costeffective option. "I like to recommend hardwood moulding," she says. "Trim brings a room to life. And by using hardwood, you really add permanent warmth, distinction and value to your home." To make the best of your hardwood investment, Muschweck says consistency is critical. "When adding millwork, use crown, baseboard and other millwork patterns that complement each other," she explains. "Be sure to maintain the same style throughout your home, but capitalize on the design flexibility different spaces offer. In the dining room, for example, choose wainscoting or a chair rail to create a sense of charm or formality."
What's the best wood to use? Nothing stands up to wear and tear better than American hardwoods, yet experience tells Pittsburgh architect Mary Cerrone that certain hardwood species are more suited to particular applications than others. "For millwork that is likely to get bumped or beat-up, such as window and door casings, baseboards, paneling and chair rails, I suggest using a harder species, like white oak," she says. "For mouldings and millwork in less accessible areas - especially those that will be painted -
homeowners can save money by using less expensive hardwoods, such as poplar."
Imagination makes millwork affordable Custom moulding can be pricey, but the American Hardwood Information Center says there are simple, creative ways to get the custom look you want, at a cost you can afford. "Lumber supply centers and home improvement stores can have up to 350 off-the-shelf moulding patterns available," Jovanovich says. "Combining or 'stacking' two or more stock moulding 'profiles' creates the effect of a single, hand-carved piece of wood and provides the unique look of custom millwork at a fraction of the cost." Or achieve the look of a more expensive hardwood, like cherry, by using a cherry stain on a less expensive hardwood. This technique works especially well in decorative applications above eye-level, such as crown moulding and recessed ceiling patterns.
