TIMES SQUARE TO TOKYO A summer sales job in Times Square sparked Sabrina’s interest in public relations. Inspired by general education classes with global themes, she quickly expanded her goals to include a double major in political science. Sabrina was selected as one of seven U.S. and fifteen Japanese students for an interdisciplinary summer research program offered in partnership with URI and the University of Tokyo. With Professor Timothy George, they visited sites devastated by the 2011 tsunami, including one that had been home to one of the Japanese students. “It was a life-changing experience,” says Sabrina.

ON SCREEN OR BEHIND THE CAMERA? WHY CHOOSE? By the time Michael graduated he was an award-winning filmmaker and director. Interning at Hasbro’s Cake Mix Studio, he was exposed to the complete production of a TV commercial—casting, scouting locations, filming, editing and more. As an actor, Michael performed in The Merchant of Venice and A View From the Bridge, but found his true passion behind the scenes. His film entry to URI’s Visualizations Film Festival won first place. Selected as
the student of the year to direct his own production with the full resources of the department, Michael also won top recognition from the Stage Directors and Choreographers Fellowship Program for his production of Pillowman. His talents landed him a job as the video and creative services coordinator for a RI-based event resource company just weeks after graduation.

EXPERIENCE POSITIVE ENERGY. Janelle wanted a traditional college campus with chances to learn off campus too. URI offered Janelle a whirlwind of opportunities, including joining one of the fastest-growing, privately-owned companies in America, one that also happens to have been founded by an alum! She landed an internship at Alex and Ani, the RI-based jewelry company known internationally for its eco-friendly, positive energy charms. Janelle’s work on photo editing and design first earned her a part-time job for the following semester, and eventually the position of design assistant upon graduation.

GREEN ENERGY FOR THE GLOBAL ECONOMY. Austin wanted a dynamic campus and a strong international business program. He discovered both at URI. He spent a semester abroad in Spain, and landed an internship in the Latin America division of the global gaming company GTECH. Back on campus, Austin put his business skills to work driving team merchandising efforts as URI’s club sports manager. Upon graduation he accepted a position as a carbon footprint monitor at Schneider Electric, a global specialist in green energy.

UNLOCK YOUR POTENTIAL. At eight years old, Eily had a benign tumor removed from her brain. Deciding then to devote her life’s work to medicine, she was named a University College Scholar for being among the top ten in her freshman class at URI. As a sophomore, Eily received a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship for her potential as a scientific researcher. She conducted bionanotechnology research and was selected from a national pool of premedical students for a paid internship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. Recipient of a Fulbright grant to study cancer in England for a year, she is one step closer to enrolling in medical school after graduation!

BIG IDEAS FOR UNDERWATER EXPLORATION. After building a submarine and spending a summer in Spain, Michael immersed himself in such unique courses as “Wave Mechanics” and “Acoustics and Coastal Measurements.” He also won a foreign language scholarship, and landed an internship working on remotely operated vehicles in the Caribbean.

HAPPEN Amandine grew up in South Africa, enjoying many happy visits with her grandparents and extended family in her parents’ native country of Rwanda. She loved travel, and after a year of living in Spain, she knew she wanted to study both engineering and Spanish in college. In URI’s world-renowned International Engineering Program, Amandine quickly found friends, supportive faculty, and a sense of community that helped her get involved. She landed a job with Professor Vinka Craver, who is developing sustainable technologies for water and wastewater treatment in South America, one of the environmental problems that Amandine wants to solve in Rwanda someday. SCIENCE, SCHOLARSHIP, AND SHARKS. Russell’s love for the ocean has led to impressive credentials. Awarded two URI Coastal Fellowships, he worked with Professor Graham Forrester restoring endangered corals in the Caribbean. He received the Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that took him to NOAA’s Office of Habitat Conservation and Restoration in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Awarded a Goldwater Scholarship, the most prestigious undergraduate award offered for students in the STEM disciplines—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, Russell’s current research involves analyzing satellite tag data of tiger sharks. Scuba diving class at URI came in handy sooner than Sarah expected. After becoming a certified diver, she received a National Science Foundation Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship to monitor fish populations at a restored coral reef in the British Virgin Islands. A recipient of the prestigious Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Sarah interned at the James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory at Sandy Hook, located on her beloved Jersey shore. Treasurer of the URI Marine Science Society and a member of the URI Wildlife Society, she also studied abroad at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences. Her ideal career? Analyzing human impact on marine environments.

UNLEASH YOUR WILD SIDE. Emma chose URI’s Wildlife and Conservation program to have hands-on experience with animals. As one of only 28 U.S. students accepted to the School for Field Studies, she traveled to Tanzania and Kenya to study the role the Noolturesh River plays in the local culture. Emma witnessed massive elephants, wildebeests, impalas, warthogs, giraffes, and more. She learned Swahili and interviewed people about devastating water contamination in their communities. After Africa, Emma volunteered at a sloth sanctuary in Costa Rica. Recently hired by Turtle Back Zoo, where she worked summers in New Jersey, Emma looks forward to working with animals from across the globe.

URI opens doors to fashion careers. Interning with Republic Clothing Group in Manhattan, Amanda watched a Vivienne Tam model walk down the runway in a dress she helped design. She interned at Tharanco Group and Roxie B, and studied in London and France. As a junior and a senior, she

won “audience favorite” at the Spring Splash fashion show, which encored in New York thanks to alumnus Wes Card, CEO and director of the Jones Group. Amanda made quite a splash in New York, landing a job as an assistant designer for the Jones New York Collection—the heart of the Jones Group.

GIVE A GUIDING HAND. Jonathan knew what he wanted to do but didn’t know what it was called. URI gave it a name: kinesiology. Preparing to become a physical education teacher has allowed him to volunteer for the Special Olympics on URI’s Kingston campus and in classes for children with Down Syndrome and other disorders at the URI Aquatics Center. One of his most transforming experiences occurred in Professor Emily Clapham’s class, teaching a group of special-needs children to surf at a local beach. “People underestimate these children,” Jonathan says. “They know exactly what they’re doing.” He continues to volunteer in the schools where he completed his elementary and secondary level internships, a unique aspect of this interdisciplinary major.

Tess defines URI with one word, “internships.” With URI’s Communications and Marketing department, she completed one internship in social media and another in writing, and she interned twice for the Harrington School of Communication and Media. Studying abroad in Australia, her class had the opportunity to develop an interactive marketing campaign for Microsoft, collaborating with their professional team. Later, she interned at Alex and Ani World Headquarters, focusing on marketing and social media, and also worked as a marketing and events intern at Boston magazine. She's now working for Alex and Ani in event coordination.

COLLEGE OF NURSING URI’s College of Nursing goes beyond the standard nursing curriculum. Our dynamic program balances theory with clinical practice in a variety of patient care settings—all amidst “smart classrooms,” simulation labs, and the highest-level teaching technology available today. URI was the first public university in New England to offer a Ph.D. program in nursing, and the same faculty teach all of our students. Our distinguished faculty include scientists conducting cutting-edge research, and experts on such issues as improved care for premature infants, pain management, alternative health care strategies, and preparedness for bioterrorism. Before she even got to URI, Jean knew the nursing program’s reputation for hands-on experience. Cutting-edge simulation labs offer life-like heartbeats, pulses, and lung sounds, along with opportunities to place IVs, give injections, and respond to simulated emergencies. “Students really get into the moment, suspending reality when they work with the simulated patients,” says nursing professor Mary Louise Palm (left). Jean’s URI training landed her a summer job as a certified nurse assistant at an assisted-living facility and a part-time job on a medical-surgical floor as a student-nurse tech. After being awarded the college’s highest honor, the Student Excellence Award, she accepted a postgraduation job as an ER nurse at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, CT. LIVING AND LEARNING— AND LOVING IT. Being from Cape Cod, Kelsey knew she would feel comfortable in URI’s coastal community. What she didn’t know was how truly at home she would feel as part of the College of Nursing First-Year Living and Learning Community (LLC). Any nerves about the rigorous curriculum evaporated when she realized she would always have a neighbor with whom to sit, walk to class, and study. Kelsey’s pediatric clinical rotation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston confirmed pediatric nursing as her calling, something she first felt while working with children at a popular Cape Cod summer attraction.

COLLEGE OF PHARMACY Last year, 99% of our pharmacy majors passed the national licensing exam, with 100% passing it the year before. With training sites across the nation, an international program in France, partnerships in China and India, a 3-D visualization system, and cutting-edge human patient simulators, our college has earned a worldwide reputation for excellence. Our degrees in the pharmaceutical sciences bring students into contact with leading researchers exploring solutions to many of society’s most pressing health care problems. We train our students for careers in research, product development, and management in the pharmaceutical industry. As a freshman he was named a University College Scholar. He also attended the URI Leadership Institute, was elected to the Student Senate, and represented URI on Wheel of Fortune. Through URI’s International Business Program, Elena completed two internships with Hasbro, the first in their RI world headquarters and the second in China, a paid position working in both their Shenzhen and Hong Kong offices. She studied Mandarin in Hangzhou, tutored students in English, and competed in a corporate regatta with Hasbro coworkers. Back on campus, she received the prestigious A. Born in the Republic of Azerbaijan and fluent in Russian, Farid’s English vocabulary consisted of “yes” and “no” when he arrived in the U.S. Today he is fluent in English, and thanks to URI’s International Engineering Program, fluent in German, too. He was awarded three prestigious scholarships to study in Germany. Planning a career in medical research, he’s done cutting-edge work with Professor Geoffrey Bothun (left), investigating the toxicity of engineered nanoparticles found in an increasing number of consumer products.

A biomedical engineering internship after Jason’s freshman year helped confirm a long-standing interest in becoming a physician. He majored in applied mathematics and completed a senior honors project with Professor Orlando Merino (left), using math models to study an African viral epidemic. Junior year, Jason was chosen for Phi Beta Kappa and studied community health in Ecuador on a prestigious Metcalf Scholarship. As a freshman, Kyle developed a new software technology for students with math disabilities. His system enhances the library's resource program, which serves students, faculty, and families in the community. A Truman Scholar nominee, Kyle gave equal attention to Student Senate, serving on the Finance, Rules and Ethics, and Rights

and Responsibilities committees. His contributions were nationally recognized with the Roswell “Buddy” Messing Award, presented by the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity to the “Most Outstanding Individual Brother.” Kyle plans to work on federal education policy, hoping to improve the nation’s public education system for the next generation.

Born in Mumbai, India and adopted by a RI family, Anna’s curiosity about culture comes naturally. She was drawn to the URI Archaeology Group, which includes interdisciplinary faculty from underwater archaeology, history, philosophy, and art history. History professor Bridget Buxton mentored Anna for a research project on ports of the Roman Empire, earning her an invitation to present at
“Discovery@URI.” Already fluent in French, German, and Spanish, Anna chose to study Latin and traveled to Greece and Italy to survey ancient ruins. She spent last summer in Bulgaria working on an archaeological dig, and was nominated for the coveted A. Robert Rainville Student Leadership Award. She is now working for the Honors Program as the coordinator of Academic Programming and Advising.

Enrolling in the College of Continuing Education at URI’s Providence campus, Mark soon discovered opportunities ideal for an aspiring foreign news correspondent. Although he was a non-traditional student, he was able to take two honors trips, visiting Birmingham, Alabama with “Classrooms Without Borders” and Belize to study anthropology. He then decided to transition to the Kingston Campus. After working as an editor for URI’s student newspaper, he landed an internship at the U.S. headquarters of the

international news network Al Jazeera. The highlight of his internship was covering the World AIDS Conference and meeting activists Al Sharpton, Cornel West, and talk show host Tavis Smiley. Back in RI, he completed his honors capstone project, transforming urban land in Providence into a forest garden promoting locally grown produce. Next stop? A post-graduate fellowship with Al Jazeera—from there, the world!

As CNN International’s man in Nigeria, Vladimir Duthiers ’91 covers West Africa to give voice to the voiceless. He still draws on his URI experiences—from his ROTC training to his political science courses to his work for the student newspaper and radio station. “I learned a lot about the way countries work, how governments operate and interact with each other, how the things you see on the surface are not necessarily what is going on behind the scenes.” Duthiers first worked for fellow URI graduate Christiane Amanpour ’83 and later for Anderson Cooper. The son of Haitian immigrants, he was among the first on scene after the 2010 Haiti earthquake, part of a CNN team that went on to win two Emmy Awards. Whether focusing on the plight of Haitian children, reporting as Occupy Nigeria exploded, covering presidential elections in Ghana, or investigating a major terrorist attack in Algeria, this URI alum is up for the challenge.

The URI Sailing team has a strong tradition of competitive excellence and alumni that include several Olympians and 26 All-Americans. URI placed 12th at the 2013 Co-ed National Championship in Cascade Locks, Oregon.

Our robust athletics complex includes some of the top facilities in the region. Men’s and women’s basketball teams play in the Thomas M. Ryan Center (theryancenter.com). The perennially strong track teams compete in Mackal Field House, where you can also do weights, cardio, and hoops; Keaney Gymnasium is home to Rhody volleyball; and the Tootell Physical Education Center includes the Aquatics Center for swimming and diving. There’s also Meade Stadium for football, the Bill Beck Field for baseball, and the URI softball and soccer complexes. Nearby, the Bradford R. Boss Arena is home to men’s and women’s ice hockey and recreational skating (bossicearena.com).

Melissa was among the models and designers at the Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design’s Annual Spring Splash Fashion Show debut in NYC, hosted by URI alum Wes Card ’70, CEO and director of the Jones Group (1). Wanting to learn more about design, she enjoyed studying abroad in Italy, returning with an entirely new fashionable passion—food (2). Back on campus, she became a representative for a global nutrition company, helping people to pursue an active and healthy life. Her motto: “Health and fitness will NEVER go out of style!” (3). The University of Rhode Island offers a wide range of merit scholarships to students who have demonstrated academic success in a challenging college preparatory curriculum. You may be eligible for these awards if you have earned a GPA of 3.2/4.0, a combined SAT score of 1050+ (critical reading and math) or ACT of 23+, and have demonstrated leadership and involvement in your school and/or community. All applicants are considered for these scholarships by submitting a complete application by February 1. There is no separate scholarship application. To be considered for our highest scholarships, we recommend that you apply by our December 1 Early Action deadline. We also strongly recommend that students interested in engineering, nursing, and pharmacy apply by December 1, as spaces are limited in these programs.
