Thanks for Six Great Years as President By Steve Stillwell
This is a tough editorial to write as I have opted to not seek reelection for 2015. Personal circumstances have forced me into working an exhaustive schedule that simply does not allow me the time to dedicate myself to properly leading Pickups Limited. Since joining the club ten years ago, we have grown in membership on an annual basis from seven active members to a 40+ bunch of close-knit friends. It is one thing to have a large number of people occasionally hanging out together and quite another to have a membership that like each other and don’t mind contributing when necessary to achieve our goals. Honestly it brings a smile to my face for a job well done by all during these past years. Now that it seems as if I have writing an epitaph, I am not leaving the club in fact I take to heart the appointment to President Emeritus so that I can continue to be a prominent spokesperson at the F-100 Western Nationals and other functions as requested by your new President and Event Chairman. I was able to find comfort in the decision to not seek re-election by knowing the club has prominent members who have this club’s best interest at heart and the bonus of more flexible schedules which will allow them to efficiently plan and organize club participation and events. Hopefully, even add a few new local cruises and fun automotive associated activities. New blood tends to bring inspirational changes, which I look forward to myself. I don’t have to peer into the Magic 8-Ball to pretty much know who will be President for 2015, and my friend will surely do a great job. I am proud to have been able to help make the club financially solvent where we reduced member dues by 50% and had a hand in funding promotional materials to enhance our exposure. Magazine and web site exposure along with the awesome Newsletter that Chris Travers edits have all be awesome tools for the growth of this club. When wearing club apparel, I can’t seem to go anywhere where someone doesn’t recognize who we are, what we do and what we represent – which is the preservation of old fat fendered Ford trucks. We must stay focused on our Mission Statement and stay focused in planning outings and functions relating to the F-1 and F-100 pickups and panels. This Newsletter is the last one of the 2014 year and I congratulate all of the members who are soon to be confirmed as our new officers and council for 2015 any pray that we will continue to be proud of the history former members have cultivated. Now, I will retire to become one of those big dogs on the porch who will relax, observe and woof only when necessary. Thanks for six great years!

Dale Says • 2014 is Drawing to a close
• by Dale Beverley
With the weather and time changes as well as stores already putting up Christmas decorations the end of the year will soon be upon us before you know it. Trucking wise there are still some great things to do before the end of the year. One of my favorite events is approaching fast, the SEMA show in Las Vegas held during the first week of November. I don’t know of anything that can motivate more interest in our automotive industry as that show. It covers everything you can imagine, from old to new and has something for young or old. In fact Chris Travers and also my son will be joining me again this year for the 3rd time in a row and as much as I try to influence him with the fine 1953 to 1956 F-100’s, he has his own interests there to see. Besides all of the incredible manufacturing and products to see I am looking forward to seeing some of the stars of some of the Velocity Channel Television Shows such as Overhaulin’, Fast and Loud, and Chasing Classic Cars. I am also going to see if I can find this person who likes to stand by our kind of trucks and get an autograph. So if anyone else is going be sure to let one of us know and we can meet up at he show. I am sure it will be amazing. In November we have the Mullin Automotive Museum Tour followed by the Club Christmas Party at Northwood Inn on December 4th. A week and a half after that is the Christmas Toy Drive at the 401K club. Mix in The Donut Derelicts, and Pomona Swap Meets on a few other Saturdays and we will be starting 2015!
Update on the 60th Anniversary of “The Tennessee Tour ‘16” Supernationals. Put this event on
your 2016 digital calendar. I don’t believe the paper ones are out yet. The date is May 11th thru May 15th 2016. Also look for more information in this newsletter. There will be some planning and ideas coming forth early next year. I will be preparing a new ’56 build for the show but I will be glad to help anyone who plans to attend with their trucks so they can drive and attend this show. Right now I am installing two trucks with Jaguar XJ-12 Independent rear ends to soften and handle those rough roads to the East. I did my first Jag install in 1982 and could not believe the difference. If anyone is interested I will be glad to provide more details on the installation.
Orange County Board Elections for 2015
Next year’s Board is going to go thru the most changes in club representatives for a single year in over 10 years. Be sure to attend next meeting on Thursday November 13th and cast your vote. It could make a difference! See page 25 for all the information. Dale Beverley Vice President, Pickups Limited of Orange County pickups@pickupslimited.com Hauln’ Freight • November-December 2014

Cruisin for a Cure
September 27, 2014 • by Chris Travers Cruisin for a Cure is the last of our annual “BIG THREE” events of the year. With Jeff’s Fun Run and the F-100 Western Nationals being our working events, “The Cure” is our time to feature the Orange County Chapter to the rest of the region. Once again we had our front row seats as the parade of cars, trucks, and anything else that could roll, passed by all day. You really do not need to leave your seat all day as many of the near 4,000 vehicles constantly cruise past our special reserve spot that Debbie Baker arranges for us.
Debbie Baker during the parade
As has been our tradition, several chapter members including Glenn, Rich, Dan, Myke, Chris, assisted in pre-event chores like unloading trailers, stuffing bags, marking parking spaces, and anything else that needed to be done as an extra thank you to Debbie for providing our “reserved parking.” The Chapter provided lunch in the form of grilled tacos with the fixings with the various helpers orchestrated by the head cook, Glenn Kerr. Over $350 was collected from the sale of past event shirts and added to the $2,500 donation the Chapter presented to Debbie to aid in her fund raising efforts for Prostrate Cancer research. You just never know what will roll past.

It’s always nice to see what Larry Davis is driving. Larry’s old F-100 is now Bill Crisel’s blue truck!

EARLY TIMES SWAP MEET • Sunday October 26
th •
by Chris Travers
This annual swap meet, pancake breakfast, and show is one of the best kept secrets around. The Early Times is one of the oldest clubs in SoCal with strong roots going back to 1965 when a group of young car guys thought to band together to go to events and enjoy the cruising culture around the Long Beach region of Southern California. The club grew to over 30 members at one time and they currently enjoy the camaraderie of their 18 members. The members own anything from 1948 and earlier with some exceptions to ‘50’s and ‘60’s American Cars. The club started with requirements of ’34 and earlier, then recently changed to pre-1949. The swap meet, show, and breakfast were OK, but the real prize of the day happened at 10:00am when the doors of Price Transfer opened to reveal one of the greatest private collections of automobilia around. You find out about these events by getting out there and meeting other hot rodders at the cruise nights. ENJOY!
