31st F-100 Western Nationals ... June 22nd 2013 Since I was assigned to be the chairman of the show in 2006 by Jeff Hornsby, I have been honored to work with many talented people over the years in the OC Chapter of Pickups Limited. The quality of the show is the result of our members. No one person can take all the credit since we are just the caretakers of a show that started 31 years ago. But as a group, the progress and development of the show we can take credit and feel proud of what we accomplished as a group. Here are two examples of ideas and how we work together. Back in 2006 the creation of the show program was started as an idea from Steve Stillwell and shared it with Chris Travers and I. Since then Chris has done an excellent job with the design and development of this document. Chris also developed our bi-monthly chapter Newsletter. The Friday Cruise was started by Jeff Hornsby and the first one was called the “Jeff’s Beach Cruise.” Jeff wanted to do something fun before the show and after Jeff died, Chris Travers continued the Friday Cruise and each year, has surpassed the previous one. There is a show committee of key members assigned to different tasks and they select members to help them in those tasks. These tasks are pre-registration, day of registration, parking, venue and vendors layout, music, raffle and 50/50, show program, Friday cruise, awards, show historian, and clean up. It takes a complete dedicated group year round to do a show like the F-100 Western Nationals and I have been honored to guide our group along the way. See you during the show. The Committee...
CHAIRMAN / EMCEE Ed Oe
Why does a car guy go to a particular show? Hopefully to have a good time and see lots of cool stuff. Our job as the committee for the 31st Annual F-100 Western Nationals is to make sure that happens. It doesn’t matter if you are just here for the afternoon as a spectator or of you drove your truck cross country in time to take in our famous Friday Cruise, we want to make your experience as memorable as possible. We learned from our dear friend Pat Ford many years ago to forget about what we may want to do as long as we strive to do whatever is best for the good of the show. That solid advice has made this show what it is today... The best all Ford truck show in the U.S.A.

So where do we go from here with this show? The answer TROPHYS Scott Delaney is simple. We will continue to take our lead from you, our participants and supporters. Take the time to talk to any of the committee members you see here and let us know what you think.

The Friday Cruise... June 21st
by Chris Travers
As always, 2013 the Friday Cruise began with a brief driver’s meeting at the Ayers Suites. Departing around 9:00am, our adventure began with a drive through beautiful Santiago Canyon in Orange County towards our first stop, a real car care superstore called DETAILING.com in Irvine. We rolled past Irvine Lake on our way to the famous Cooks Corner near Live Oak and Silverado Canyons which were the center of attention in 2007 with the infamous 27,600-acre Santiago fire. Isn’t it wonderful how nature heals itself by creating such a beautiful place?
STOP #1 - DETAILING.com -
Started by professional auto detailers, for detailers, DETAILING.com offers the industry’s best products including detailing and car care products from Meguiars, Mothers, 3M, Menzerna, Einszett, Sonax, Swissvax, Zymol, 303, Lake Country, Adams, Stoner, Surf City Garage, Aero, SM Arnold, Flex, Mytee and many more. You name it and they have it IN STOCK! Tons of microfiber products from one end to the other. We were given a FREE 45 minute polishing/buffing seminar and special discounts were offered to our group. You can check them out at www.detailing.com

The Friday Cruise... continued from page 8 Along the way...
Irvine Lake is still part of the original 110,000 acres of prime ranch land (almost a third of present-day Orange County) that made up the original Irvine Ranch.
Besides hosting dozens of events each year including concerts, fishing competitions, and occasional boat races, Irvine Lake through the Serrano Water District, provides drinking water to Villa Park and some parts of the City of Orange.

Stop #2 - Knowlwood... ”World’s Best Hamburgers” -
If you are in Orange County and want a burger, you go to Knowlwood...PERIOD!
For over fifty years this has been “Home of the World’s Best HamburgerTM” and often just called by locals simply the “World’s Best.” Besides great food, the building houses a Historic Blacksmith Shop. There was plenty of food and room for everybody. http://www.knowlwoodrestaurants.com 10 www.F100westernnationals.com
STOP #3 - MARCONI AUTOMOTIVE MUSEUM - Dick Marconi, came to
California from Gary, Indiana in the late 50’s. Armed with an MBA, and a young family, he made the trek across the US to arrive in Southern California where he embarked with passion, on a career developing and manufacturing custom made vitamins, weight loss products and supplements. Along the way, Dick developed his life’s mantra which is “learn, earn, and return.” Throughout his life he has maintained that belief and in so doing, founded the Marconi Automotive Museum & Foundation for Kids in 1994. Always a great car enthusiast, Dick amassed a wonderful collection of high performance street cars and race cars, over the years. In founding the Marconi Automotive Museum and Foundation for Kids, the goal of helping to raise one million dollars annually for various at-risk children’s charities has been achieved by using the car collection as a special event venue as well as producing annual events on its behalf. Mr. Marconi himself gave us a tour of this fabulous collection.

Stop #4 - The Astor Event Center -
The Astor Events Center is a living collection of automobiles and communication devices covering the Golden years of broadcasting. Art Astor who has owned several radio stations up and down the west coast hosted this tour answering all questions posed. Art calls this a Living Museum for one big reason...

2012 Truck of the Year OWNER - Bob Mantranga-Newport Coast, CA
by Chris Travers
It seems that all of our trucks have a story behind them but this one takes you across the USA and back. To make it short and sweet, it seems that an old friend of Bob’s in Florida Don Hachenberger arranged for Rob MacGregor from No Limit in San Bernardino to build this truck through another buddy Allen Law who is from Lake Tahoe. Confused? Hang on. I was too until I spent some time with Bob going over the details of his ride. And what details they are. It seems that after several years on the show circuit, Bob purchased the truck from Don and brought it home to Orange County where he then put his own personal touches on it. We all know that No Limit has a ton of engineering background with Rob at the helm but Rob was turned loose on build. You expect to see all of the standard No Limit items but in this case the use of polished 304 stainless components is just the beginning. The tilt front end and bed was yet another pair of ideas that Rob came up with. The stock cab had all corners rounded then mated with a highly modified Gibbon front end and rear fenders, Pro’s Pick bed. The truck is about as smooth as can be but still retains the stock door handles and front fascia. Inside the cab a custom dash and center console are complemented with a total of 12 Auto Meter gauges, an IDIDIT column, and Billet Specialties steering wheel. Even the B&M shifter is custom. Wanda’s Custom Upholstery handled the rest, which included radically reworking a Glide Engineering seat before covering it with cream-colored leather and a few bellies of genuine Florida gators. Bob is back for 2013 so be sure to check this one out... Bob will fill you in on the details.

F 100 WESTERN NATIONALS IN ANAHEIM
Through a Windshield, Clearly
by Tim White, Fat Fender Fords of Tucson Arizona
Family issues and the ever-present shortage of money have slowed my truck project considerably the last six weeks or so. The brand new (and leaky) power steering pump started it and after that simple but time consuming repair, the newly made power steering hoses were found to have the high and low pressure fittings reversed causing a multitude of problems, the least of which was NOT the fluid sprayed all over the new paint and chrome but the garage floor, Editor’s Note: This is what one guy went through getting ready walls and, oh yes, me. The “business” that made the offending for the Western Nationals and how a good club can help you out hoses is now OOB... That’s “out of business” for those of you who may not keep up with the latest in acronyms and abbreviations. Forty eight dollars and half a day later the new hoses, from another source, no longer leak and they do hold pressure. The steering box then reared its ugly head in the form of a non-functioning “spool valve” whatever that is. I chose to conceal my ignorance on that point in order to save face in some small way. The new steering box arrived today, removing the old one and returning it to the parts store (for the core charge) was fairly easy and that is where the easy part ended. The four tube exhaust header on that side had to be removed in order to install the newly painted new steering box, this did give me a chance to tighten a pipe plug in the side of the engine block, that plug being the source of three drops per day of anti-freeze on the floor. Reinstalling the whole thing turned into a jigsaw puzzle requiring the labors of two truck guys. The first to hold the exhaust header in place but out of the way and the second (me) to hold that really heavy, cast iron behemoth of a steering gear overhead with one hand, while simultaneously getting the bolts thru the frame and started without cross threading them. Completing a task this difficult was aggravated by the hoses for the P/S cooler falling from their temporary resting place and leaking fluid, clean, new fluid, onto my Fat Fender Ford Club shirt and condemning it to “get rid of that rag” status. The new fittings and hard lines have been polished, more new fluid has been purchased and hopefully the job will be completed tomorrow. All of this frustration has become somewhat subdued by sitting in the cab (after changing my shirt, RIP FFF) and looking out thru my just installed tinted windshield. You see, two guys from the club here in the Tucson area drove the 30 miles to my house, voluntarily and at their own expense. They installed the W/S, with my help of course and in the process saved me the $65 charge from the glass shop! While they were there they also hooked me up with a TIG wizard who can finish the welding on my new valve covers. Overall, I am probably money ahead and in the meantime I have a new steering box and a new windshield. Now I really can see things a little more clearly. I wanted so badly to be able to “unveil” this truck at this year’s F-100 Western Nationals but sometimes life gets in the way of things. Best of luck to everybody… I hope to see you all next year. Many people think that Pickups Limited of Orange County is full of really strange people. Why is that you say? Because WE DRIVE OUR TRUCKS! Week in and week out we are always on the move doing a cruise, show, shop tour, swap meet, or weekend trip. Our trucks are always safe and ready to go thanks to our annual Safety Check at Glenn’s Alignment and Brake in Costa Mesa where all hands are on deck to check things out. Our safety check is one of the most complete in the business covering over 70 check points. We even pull wheels and brake drums on the trucks that are so equipped to do a complete brake inspection.
The NSRA can’t even say that!
Our annual Jeff’s Fun Run kicks off the year in Southern California as a poker run and shop tour and the F-100 Western Nationals make up the two big events of the year. We are also a part of the annual Cruisin for a Cure every September. These and other efforts throughout the year enable us to carry out some charity work. Keep up on our events by checking our bi-monthly newsletter on www.pickupslimited.com

WELCOME TO THE 31ST ANNUAL F-100 WESTERN NATIONALS... by Steve Stillwell As President of Pickups Limited, Orange County Chapter, it is rewarding to have played an active role in the F-100 Western Nationals now having grown into the West Coast’s largest classic Ford truck event. And you are going to have a fun day as our 40-plus members will be pleased to assist you in any way, from the time you park with your friends through the awards presentation and the 50/50 raffle to wrap things up. Be sure to take a look at the top trophy for Best Of Show as it is a handmade, one-of-a-kind award! Judging is always tough, but some trucker who has worked tirelessly will reap the benefits of his or her hard work. This award is a keeper! Awards are nice, but the best part of this show is reuniting with old friends and witnessing the advancements they have made on their custom rides! I have worked at Total Cost Involved Engineering for the past two-plus years and get a real kick out of some of the comments from customers. Best example of late was a gentleman who had just purchased a chassis for a family treasure who commented, “Anyone can fall in love with a new truck.” A rather straightforward statement but it rings true, especially to all of you in attendance today. We have all made a commitment to resurrect, restore, maintain and sometimes snatch a rusting hunk of classic sheet metal from the jaws of the crusher. I would be willing to bet that a large number of the hot looking trucks today could be called “a rescue.” And our vendors will be more than happy to help you put the finishing touches on your project no matter what stage of completion. And, that unique love for ugly, old fat fendered Ford trucks that truly mark a unique time in the U.S. Americana is the common bond that we all share today. That line, “ugly, old fat fendered Fords” has to be credited to my close friend, Pat Ford of F-100 SuperNationals fame. And much like the show that Pat and Jan Ford hosted for 30+ years, the F-100 Western Nationals has now grown into a Ford Family Reunion with the rare opportunity to visit with dear friends during this annual event. Awards are nice along with the chance to win enough 50/50 money to pay for your trip, but I have to put this annual opportunity to meet and greet fellow Ford truck lovers and witness the continued customization of their personalized rides at the top of my list. Enjoy our unique truck show setting, under the trees in the park-like atmosphere of Featherly Park, while we serenade you ears with classic sounds of the fifties and sixties tunes while you hang out with your Pickups Limited, Orange County Chapter friends, which has now grown to forty+ members. Each time you attend the F-100 Western Nationals, you ensure the legacy of the F-1 and F-100 pickups and panels will endure for generations to come. Thanks for attending our show this year and I genuinely hope you and your better half have the time of your lives. Enjoy!

ABOUT US
Pickups Limited began in April, 1968 as the result of an ad placed in the Penny Saver. Our Orange County Chapter is the oldest and currently the largest of 7 Chapters found throughout Southern California, with membership limited to 1948-56 F-1 and F-100 pickups and panels. We are an active non-profit organization. Each June we host the largest all Ford truck show in the Western United States, the F-100 Western Nationals while every January we produce Jeff’s Fun Run, a poker run throughout the car culture of LA and Orange Counties. Our business meetings are on the second Thursday of each month at Ken Grody Ford in Buena Park (info below) and we usually plan one group outing each month. Check the flip side of this flyer for a sample of Pickups Limited’s Orange County Chapter events.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
• Where can I buy an F-100? You would be surprised where they show up. Trucks can be found on E-bay, Auto and Truck Trader and in Drive magazine as well as various F-1 & F-100 on-line sites including pickupslimited.com and at many of the local cruise events. You might even find one in your own neighborhood! If you feel adventurous, you can even build a brand new 1956 F-100 from parts that many vendors provide! • Where can I get parts and repairs? Check the flip side for a listing of great vendors that support Pickups Limited. • Can I do repairs myself? Many of us do most of the mechanical tasks ourselves. That’s half the fun. There also are many books available from mechanical to paint and body to interior total restoration.
• Do I have to own a truck to join? Yes but it can be a work in progress. The love for the truck is what comes first. If you are looking for a truck, maybe we can help. • Do I have to be a member to participate in Club events? Not at all! Non members are always welcome. But if you do a "Run" in something other than a F-1 or F-100, we might ask you to follow the pack. • How can I get a ride in a F-100? Show up at a meeting or event and ask! • How can I join Pickups Limited? Come to a meeting or one of our events for the first step. There is a basic probationary period required. • Do I need special insurance for such an old vehicle? Not really, it depends on the value of the truck. Many companies will offer premium coverage although there are speciality insurance carriers that can insure your baby for the full stated value.

There is more to the F-100 Western Nationals than just the show on Saturday. Don’t forget about the Friday Cruise. Every year we jump in our trucks and drive to some of the more interesting spots in our area. In the past we have visited the John Force Race Station, NHRA Motorsports Museum, Surf City Garage, Total Cost Involved, So Cal Speed Shop, Cook’s Corner Dinner, and driven through many of our most beautiful areas including Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Carbon Canyon, Santiago Canyon, Corona Del Mar, Huntington Beach, and more. If you have not joined us in the past, plan your 2014 trip now to include the Friday Cruise. It’s a big part of the show. You won’t regret it.

You can find all of your answers and usually quite a few long lost friends hanging out at our History tent which can be found next to the Orange County Host Club trucks, near the main gate. Gary Ewing, one of the founding fathers will be on hand with a ton of old photos, shirts, awards and other memorabilia for you to enjoy. Stop by while you are choosing your favorite truck of the show and see a glimpse of the past including photos and slide shows of past award winners... Gary would love to meet you!

This event is a POKER RUN that has taken us for an inside look at many world famous shops, manufacturers, and retailers that support all while having the time of our lives, driving our hot rods. Everybody is welcome no matter what you are driving or riding on... Yes, motorcycles are welcome too! Over the years we have visited the John Force Race Station, Original Parts Group, HILLCO Fastener Warehouse, Chopit Kustons, Lime Works, MOON Equipment Company Kugel Komponents, The Truck Shop, CW Moss, Hot Rods and Hobbies and more. Where will we go next year??? The home of Jeff’s Fun Run as always is Ken Grody Ford in Buena Park on the corner of Beach and Commonwealth. Our 8:30 blast off time will get you to the finish in time for some great bench racing, 50/50 raffle, and lunch. Hot rodders have come from as far as San Diego, Modesto, and Lake Havasu for the fun run because we always promise a great time for everybody.
