Candlelight Tour of Historic Houses of Worship Celebrates 25th Anniversary By: Michelle Kershner, Tourism Council of Frederick County Celebrate the 25th annual Candlelight Tour of Historic Houses of Worship this holiday season in downtown Frederick on Monday, December 26, 4-9 p.m. As the sun begins to set, visitors are welcomed to tour many of Frederick’s famous clustered spires and other historic houses of worship by candlelight. At nearly a dozen sites, guests are greeted with special programs, angelic choirs, and nativity scenes on this special open house that celebrates Frederick’s tradition of religious diversity, local history, and the holiday season.
Church spires that shape the Frederick skyline have become a symbol of Frederick’s distinguished heritage and beauty. Frederick’s iconic clustered spires are immortalized in John Greenleaf Whittier’s Civil War-era poem, “Barbara Frietchie.” “The clustered spires of Frederick stand, green walled by the hills of Maryland,” he wrote. Beyond mention in Whittier’s poem, Frederick’s clustered spires and churches stood as witness during the Civil War, shaping their history and identity.

performed by vocalists, pianists, organists or instrumentalists, with some sites offering complimentary beverages and light refreshments. Congregational members act as hosts to greet visitors and answer questions about the history of the churches. Outside, luminaries guide visitors from one site to the next.
“We’re in the midst of 150th anniversary commemorations of the Civil War,” says Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area Director, Liz Shatto. “Many people are unaware that most of the historic houses of worship featured on this tour were critical during the battles of Antietam and Monocacy.” In the days after these battles, Frederick became a major hospital center. Most of the churches in town were used to house and provide compassionate care for the injured, sick and dying. Evangelical Lutheran Church even has photos showing the church as a Civil War hospital. For more information about Frederick’s churches during the Civil War and caring for the wounded, be sure to visit the National Museum of Civil War Medicine located at 48 E. Patrick Street in Frederick during museum hours. Celebrating its 25 year, the tour was a concept originally developed by Peter Plamondon Sr., founder of the Plamondon Companies. “So many people walk by these churches every day, yet very few have the opportunity to see the beautiful interiors,” he said. Over the years, the program grew and today visitors enjoy tours, interpretations, and seasonal music 16

During the tour, visitors experience three centuries of American architecture and history, providing the perfect setting for joyful celebrations and camaraderie. “It’s a great way to bring the community and families together during the holiday season,” says event coordinator Patsy Ensminger, Operations Director for the Tourism Council. The Tourism Council of Frederick County coordinates this tour with sponsorship from the Plamondon Companies, Everedy Square & Shab Row, and The Gazette this year. United Way of Frederick County:
Leading the Effort to Advance the Common Good By: Pamela S. Dalton, UWFC Director of Marketing & Communications Although United Way of Frederick County has been impacting the Frederick community for 73 years, this is certainly not your grandfather’s United Way anymore. Nestled among other local nonprofit organizations in the Federated Charities building on South Market Street, United Way has evolved tremendously over the years. Historically, United Way has been a strong and steady community staple, consistently and thoroughly reviewing its partner agencies and dutifully raising funds to distribute to those particular agencies. Nationwide, however, many community issues were getting worse, and those conditions were no different right here in Frederick. For millions of hardworking families, the basic ingredients for a good life were increasingly beyond reach. Why were problems getting worse? Simply stated, there wasn’t a financial gap; there was a strategy gap. In response, United Way drew on research and sought input from a broad range of partners to gauge where progress has—and has not— been made over the last 10 years. It was clear that creating opportunities for a better life for everyone would involve focusing in on three key areas: education, income and health, which are the building blocks for a good life. “Advancing the common good is less about helping one person at a time and more about changing systems to help all of us. We are all connected and interdependent,” stated Josh Pedersen, United Way of Frederick County’s Chief Executive Officer. It takes everyone in the community working together to achieve lasting change. Some will give, some will lend their voice to advocate for a cause, and some will volunteer. “We all win when a child succeeds in school, when families are financially stable, when people are healthy,” he continued.

FALL 2011
History has shown time and again that when the stakes are high, Americans will rise to the occasion. That leads to partnership, a critical element in the road to community impact. This community impact work requires collaboration across all sectors—big businesses, small businesses, elected officials, nonprofits, academia, the faith community, parents and neighbors. By working together, we can accomplish things that no organization, no individual and no government can accomplish on its own. As part of this new way of conducting business, United Way of Frederick County recognizes the need to be nimble and responsive to emerging needs affecting the community. The organization has implemented quarterly mini-grants to community programs as a mechanism for funding outside its existing grants-making channels. And that’s where United Way of Frederick County stands today, completing the journey from serving as a pass-through fundraising entity to a full community impact organization. The organization’s transition produces a more tangible outcome, focusing on long-term solutions, not short-term outputs. This hands-on approach assures donors their generous contributions are being invested in the most efficient manner to affect the most pressing needs. In short, today’s United Way of Frederick County aims not so much for a monetary goal as much as a goal to use the resources of generous donors to improve lives, raise awareness and influence the conditions that contribute to a healthy and productive community. One thing is certain, no person in Frederick County is completely untouched by the work of United Way. www.unitedwayfrederick.org

Women of Hope Project Empowers Afghan Women By: Sharon D. Jacko, President, WOHP photos credits: Sharon D. Jacko and Women of Hope Project Frederick resident Sharon Jacko proudly served her country for 26 years, retiring in 2008 as a Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel. Her love and passion for the women of both Iraq and Afghanistan began during her Iraq tour in 2004 when she was eyewitness to their despair. She made a promise to herself then that she would somehow find a way to help her sisters. She just didn’t know what that way looked like at the time. A good friend was insistent in Jacko meeting Betsy Beamon, founder of Women of Hope Project (WOHP). Beamon had a vision to restore hope, dignity and empowerment to Afghan women by providing the necessary training and resources to help set them free from poverty and oppression. She created
20
FALL 2011
WOHP, a non-profit organization, as a way for women to work together in carrying out this mission in Afghanistan. Three months after retiring from the Marine Corps, Jacko was on an airplane heading back to Afghanistan. Mission: to meet Betsy Beamon and the WOHP. Jacko and her good friend’s wife left Frederick to teach the women business classes and self-esteem building. Jacko said, “What had me was when I looked into the eyes of these beautiful Afghan women. What I saw in those eyes that have seen nothing but despair all of their lives, was hope.” From that moment on, Jacko was committed to WOHP.
The project began in 2001 by teaching the women in the camps how to grow soilless gardens. This was a wonderful project that not only trained them to grow their own food in small spaces, but the process of growing produce from seed lifted their depression and gave them hope. Project volunteers continued with this same community, after the Afghan government moved them to permanent land, to help them establish permanent homes for themselves and to develop their new neighborhoods. WOHP provided wood for their rooftops, helped build wells, established a House of Prayer and created a school for 200 children. They also planted over 750 fruit trees and 700 fir trees to provide food and shade in an otherwise barren landscape. They hope to create a soccer league to give the young men in the community a positive activity, and to establish a bazaar to sell their goods, which will launch their ability to be completely self-sufficient. WOHP volunteers also work in Kuchi Camps. Kuchis are nomads and shepherds. However, during the war, all of the animals died, which made it impossible for the Kuchis to make a living and it sent them spiraling into extreme poverty. Since they are nomadic, they have no land and no rooted community so they have been living as refugees ever since. WOHP started a school there for 65 children where the parents are supportive and involved in their children’s education. The teacher of this school asked WOHP if they could provide a lunch program of rice and nan (Afghan bread) for the children while they are in school. WOHP is currently raising funds to do so. Winter is coming and the Afghan school break takes place from late November until early March because the weather is too cold for the children to attend school. The goal is to start the new school year with the funds to begin a lunch program. For most of these children, this will be their only consistent meal of the day. WOHP discovered that the Afghan families they work with only average about four to five meals per week! Some not even that! Usually, these are not nutritionally balanced meals, as they consist of all starches that contribute to the high percentages of diabetes in the refugee communities. WOHP also runs 25 Self Help Groups for very poor women. These groups of women each save a very small amount of money in a collective savings account and are taught business skills by a facilitator. After their collective savings accumulates, they take turns starting small business, which grow to support their families.
In addition, there is a Push Cart program to help unemployed men start a small business to support their families. Carts, training and a supply of initial product are provided. Training in business and marketing skills ensures a sustainable income while helping to pay for children’s education. The requirement is that their daughters go to school, a rare opportunity for Afghan girls.
IN THE COMMUNITY The WOHP focuses on the needs of the poorest of the poor. All of its projects are planned to promote self-sufficiency for the people they serve. Their work is supported by the sales of embroidered handcrafts made by the Afghan women in their embroidery and textile design project and donations. There are over 1,500 women being trained and supported through the sale of these goods. WOHP works to provide life-changing skills and opportunities to help Afghan women and their families break the cycle of poverty. Today, WOHP’s mission has expanded to help hundreds of children return to school and to offer vocational training to men. By learning and working an incomeproducing trade, men and women become contributing members of society, strengthening themselves, their families and their communities.
How You Can Get Involved: Volunteers are the backbone of the Women of Hope Project. If you would like the opportunity to help, email info@ womenofhopeproject.org. Watch for WOHP sales throughout the community for the opportunity to purchase embroidery products and other products made by the WOHP women. For more information or to make a donation, please check the website at www.womenofhopeproject.org.

FALL 2011
Former Frederick Mayor Jacob Ramsburg—with an assist from the Jolly Old Elf himself, Santa Claus—officially opened the holiday shopping season on Friday, November 24, 1961 with the lighting of the aluminum Christmas tree and Nativity display at the Frederick Shopping Center’s “Santa Land.” Santa made a quick trip downtown to lead a Christmas parade courtesy of the Downtown Merchants Committee and host a concert by the Frederick High School Band on the steps of the
Evangelical United Church of Christ on West Church Street. The Elm Street Glee Club sang, and other local glee clubs were scheduled to serenade downtown shoppers throughout the holiday season. Fifty years ago, downtown Frederick was a bustling and vibrant commercial center, despite the competition of the new Frederick Shopping Center on Seventh Street. The “Golden Mile” and Francis Scott Key Mall were still more than a decade in the future, and if you wanted to purchase that perfect holiday gift in 1961, you were probably shopping downtown. Downtown merchants boasted “over 367 fine stores to help solve your gift-giving problems.” You could find RCA televisions at Storm and Shipley’s, models at Scotty’s Toy and Hobby Shop, and a little of everything at Crest 5-and-10 Store. Hendrickson’s on North Market—one of Frederick’s oldest family-owned businesses and now home to Isabella’s Taverna and Tapas Bar—wished their customers the “marvelous joys of Yuletide” as they shopped.
New Year’s Day had to be celebrated in style. For the ladies who wanted to make a statement, “Adolph puts Mink in your hair for New Year’s Beauty” with a $9.95 Mink Permanent at Adolph’s Beauty Salon at the Frederick Shopping Center. After a morning of pampering, you could swing by Carmack’s Supermarket on Market Street for your county-grown dessert apples (six pounds just 49 cents!). For those wanting to make a really momentous New Year’s purchase, a fully equipped 1961 Corvair could be yours for $1,595 (negotiable, of course) at Moyer’s Used Car Center on South Street. And, for that new electric train that just wouldn’t smoke, or console TV with rolling squiggles that just won’t quit, there was a quick stop to Wayside Service on East Patrick, bringing it all full circle.
The newly opened Frederick Shopping Center boasted over 1,500 parking spaces and stores like People’s Drug, High’s Dairy Store, Melart Jewelers, Woolworth’s, Mays’ Hardware, Vater’s Shoes, Rob Ellen Gift Shop, Davis Studio and Camera Mart. The savvy holiday saver could begin their shopping by cashing in their Christmas Club account check at the Farmers and Mechanics-Citizens National Bank at the shopping center, which today still serves customers as PNC Bank. After a busy day in search of bargains, foot-weary shoppers could take a load off with some entertainment at the Tivoli theater downtown on Patrick Street, now home to the Weinberg Theater, to see Jerry Lewis’ latest comedy, “The Errand Boy.” The kiddies would have to wait a few more weeks to see Walt Disney’s Christmastime appropriate “Babes in Toyland.”
Ormond Hosiery Shop and Gilbert’s, first block of North Market Street, west side
Like today, the holiday savings didn’t end with Christmas. Frederick Countians could pick up a five-piece dinette set for just $33 or a six-piece Early American living room suite for $249 (or just $12 a month) at Routzahn and Son’s, a child’s “car coat” for just $3 at Henry’s, or a “greaseless” fry pan for $3.95 (hurry, limited quantities!) at Kemp’s, during the many local after-Christmas sales. At the Young Men’s Shop on North Market all men’s slacks were 20 percent off (alterations extra). You also could enjoy the big sale at Gilbert’s on North Market the day after Christmas, but “Sorry—No Christmas Exchanges” on December 26. HOUSING & REAL ESTATE
A Great Place to Live Real Estate in Frederick County
By: Sandy Fouche, President, Frederick County Association of REALTORS® Real Estate is still a great investment and the Frederick area is a great place to live. It shows in our home sale statistics. Frederick County’s real estate market has continued to be better statistically than the national or state averages. As a bedroom community of Washington D.C., the job market has not taken as bad of an Sandy Fouche, economic downturn as the President, Frederick County rest of the United States or Association of REALTORS® some counties in Maryland that are farther from the D.C. job market. In a healthy market, we like to see an average of six months or so of inventory (the total amount of homes on the market divided by the sales for the month.) Right now Frederick County has a 5.5 month supply of homes. While that is considered healthy, we do have what we call a split market. The homes priced under $300,000 have a 4.5 month supply while the homes over $300,000 have an eight month supply of inventory. We would like to see those averages more even for all sales prices. Overall, however, there is a positive trend. Sellers in the lower range are seeing multiple offers on some of their properties which provide them with a better price and better terms than a few years ago. Sellers in the upper end still need to make sure that their properties are in very good condition and priced very competitively with other homes that are similar to theirs. Frederick County has faired better than the average for
the state. Maryland has an average of 7.6 months of inventory. That is down overall from last year when the average was nine months of inventory. We are still seeing a decline in pricing especially for the upper levels, which is good news for buyers. Interest rates are low and prices continue to be low so even though it is a tougher lending environment, homes are as affordable as they have been in a long time. Rental rates have shown an increase recently which is good for investors looking for a long term investment. Pending home sales (homes that are under contract and scheduled to settle) have also increased. This has been the trend nationwide. There are many short sales (a home that sells for less than what is owed on the property) and bank foreclosures still on the market, which take a longer time than average from contract date to settlement. This can be why we are seeing an upward trend in pending sales. If those sales were closing on a traditional schedule, the inventory would be even less than what we are seeing today. According to the National Association of REALTORS®, studies show that home ownership has a significant positive impact on net worth, educational achievement, civic participation, health and overall quality of life. People who own homes vote more, volunteer more and contribute more to their neighborhoods. Children of home owners do better in school, stay in school longer, are more likely to participate in organized activities and spend less time in front of the television. Home ownership matters and Frederick County is a great place to own a home.

YouTube for Business:
Tips on how to plan it, create it and get your videos seen on the second largest search platform in the world By: Whitney Hahn, Digital Bard Video. Web. Marketing.
Many business owners are aware of the benefits of using online video to connect with new prospects, communicate with clients and make customers raving fans. The use of Internet video increases sales conversions, some studies say by 30 percent or more. It has also been shown to decrease returns, increase engagement and improve search engine optimization (SEO). YouTube is the second most popular search engine today, so you might as well make the most of it. But HOW do you do this on a tight budget and with little or no video experience? Increase your chances for more success and less “cheese” by following these basic tips for planning, creating and publishing your business videos. Planning
Product demo videos, client testimonials and how-to tutorials are great ways to expand your brand and increase sales. The Internet is the ultimate short attention span arena, so most online videos need to be two minutes or less in length. Is the type of video you create an attempt to sell something? If so, then the video’s purpose is to nudge the consumer past the final step of consideration and into a purchase. Is it meant as a how-to or tip? Then a longer format may be acceptable. Is it meant as entertainment? Commentary? News coverage?
Being clear on what style of video you are producing helps you maintain consistency among the graphics, music, animation, length and camera shots you choose. It also will assist you in determining what conversion, or next step in the sales funnel, you are seeking. Creating
For under $500, you can get a simple camera, clip-on microphone, light kit and editing software. Don’t over-buy, become intimidated, and then never use your gear. Keep it easy to use, and then do so. • We recommend the Kodak Zi8, a “point and shoot” style camera that is small, portable, fun and not complicated. It comes with some basic editing software, plugs right into your computer via USB and has quick settings for Internet video. • Bad audio will ruin an otherwise fine video, so get a clipon (lavalier) microphone with a good windscreen. • We’ve fallen in love with the new florescent kits that are available. Get one with a nice light box or diffuser for even skin tones. Bounce umbrellas will also work well; they just require a bit more space. A basic two-light kit with a small green screen can get you started and give you plenty of options.

BUSINESS • You’ll need to edit what you capture somehow, and export it in a format that’s right for online viewing. For PC users, we like Adobe Premiere Elements and for Mac users, we like Final Cut Express. Both editing programs offer great online support, video tutorials and user forums to help you learn it quickly. Publishing
Now that you’ve got a well-planned, simply created video, you want people to see it. The easiest, all-purpose encoding format for YouTube, Facebook and iPad/iPod is H.264 (a form of Quicktime .mov files). Export your file in this format and get uploading! Remember to take advantage of the SEO benefits of online video. Use a relevant and intriguing title, fill in the description (100 words or more), add keywords (try for 10-12), and geotag
it for your business address. Use a full URL of your website as the first item in the description for a live link, and consider using YouTube’s captions and annotations for extra power. Check the help files and tutorials available through YouTube for details. As a friend of mine is fond of saying, “You don’t have to get it perfect, you just have to get it going.” Short, clean and simple videos can make a huge difference for your company, so jump in and get going today! Whitney Hahn is the co-founder of Digital Bard Video. Web. Marketing. in downtown Frederick, MD. She speaks to entrepreneur’s groups about the power of online video, marketing, and product creation, writes and hosts most of the www.DigitalBard.com video blog, and is an EzineArticles.com Expert Author. CHILD CARE & EDUCATION
Proud to Serve Our Community
Frederick County Public Schools By: Dr. Theresa R. Alban, Superintendent, Frederick County Public Schools As Frederick County’s new superintendent of schools, I spent my summer visiting all 64 of our public schools. The visits— usually two or three a day— started with a tour of the building and concluded with a meeting with the school administrators and sometimes a teacher or two.
County public high schools serving traditional grades 9-12 in the nation’s top seven percent in encouraging students to take AP or International Baccalaureate tests. Even with such challenging courses, our dropout rate at 1.19 percent is Maryland’s second lowest.
Without exception, everyone I met showed enormous pride in their schools, their staffs, their work and, of course, their students. Our conversations highlighted what I fundamentally believe: Public education is about service. And the service we provide in our schools—for children—is the most important work one can do.
Obviously, a great deal of credit for these accomplishments goes to the students themselves. Then there are the thousands of adults at home who support, coach, mentor and encourage their children to aim for success. Nor can we overlook the support of elected officials, businesses, houses of worship, charitable organizations and others.
Since arriving in Frederick County in July, I have been asked to describe my impression of FCPS. My reply: “striving for excellence.” By that I mean that employees throughout the system are giving their best to achieve excellence, and leaders are focused on exemplifying and expecting excellence.
I very much look forward to a positive partnership with the entire Frederick community, a community in which school enrollment has more than doubled since 1970 to over 40,000 students, bringing us close to the country’s top 100 largest school systems.
The positive results are everywhere. Examples include our Maryland testing scores, SAT and Advanced Placement (AP) standings, and the number of employees and schools that have earned top state and national honors. FCPS is the proud employer of America’s 2011 National Teacher of the Year: Urbana High School chemistry teacher Michelle Shearer. The Washington Post 2011 Challenge Index ranked all Frederick

In a school system our size, cost efficiencies are essential. We are Frederick County’s largest employer with 5,500 employees, and we are good stewards of taxpayer funding. We recycle, are diligent about saving energy, maintain a very low ratio of central-office staffing to total employees, and rank in the top tier among Maryland’s public schools for return on investment, according to the 2011 Center for American Progress report. Our most recent Comprehensive Annual Financial Report earned us the Association of School Business Officials’ Certificate of Excellence for integrity in financial reporting (for the third year in a row), the highest recognition conferred upon school systems that have met or exceeded the program standards. For purposes of fiscal transparency and public
accountability, we post budget details and answers to frequently asked questions online at www.fcps.org/budget. Starting with this year’s ninth graders, we join all Maryland schools in teaching personal financial literacy, preparing students to make informed decisions. There are areas in which we believe FCPS must accomplish more. What we strive to achieve and the progress we have made are solid evidence of employees’ commitment to reach, challenge and prepare every child for success. Our involved families and supportive community complete the partnership to equip students for the expertise and services that our 21stcentury world requires. Schedule a visit or attend an event at your neighborhood school. Browse the FCPS website at www.fcps.org and sign up for FindOutFirst email news to learn more about the excellent value that public education provides Frederick County taxpayers and students.

HEALTH CARE
Mental Health Association Moves By: Patricia G. Hanberry, CEO, Mental Health Association of Frederick County The Mental Health Association of Frederick County (MHA), a private non-profit organization, will have a brand new look come spring of 2012. In a move to be more visible, available and accessible to everyone in Frederick, MHA has purchased a building at 226 South Jefferson Street, in the center that includes Dance Unlimited and The Fight Club, a martial arts training facility. Extensive renovations, both inside and out, have already begun. This move is symbolic of what the agency is working to accomplish in the community – making the issue of mental illness more visible, bringing the need for good mental health to light, and making mental health programs as understandable and sought after as physical health services. Good mental health is every bit as integral to our sense of well being as good physical health, and it impacts just as many facets of our lives. MHA therefore offers a wide variety of services that touch people of every age and life situation. Services available for children include education about how to recognize and report abuse when it occurs, as well as educating parents about their children’s growth and development and how to communicate with and discipline them in a way that promotes positive outcomes. The MHA staff also proactively helps families establish healthy environments for their children by working with parents and

other child care providers to ensure that they are equipped to provide the safest, most stable and nurturing environment possible for the children in their care. MHA staff meets child care providers in the classroom as well, educating over 3,000 of them every year on topics as diverse as first aid/CPR, how to create a literacy-rich environment and early childhood mental health. MHA’s child programming additionally includes Court Appointed Special Advocates for foster children. These highly trained volunteers follow every aspect of a foster child’s life, ultimately making an informed recommendation to the court as to the living situation that is in the child’s best interest. For children who may come from caring, supportive families but who find themselves pulled in a lot of different, often unhealthy directions, MHA has established after school programs in two Frederick schools. The programs offer middle school youth wholesome, stimulating and lively activities, as well as tutoring, to keep them occupied, motivated and supported emotionally in those otherwise ‘treacherous’ unsupervised after school hours. For society’s oldest members, MHA has a Telephone Reassurance program in which caring staff make daily phone calls to isolated seniors. This ensures that people who otherwise may not have anyone to talk with all day know that someone cares about their physical and emotional well-being.
For people of all ages, MHA offers counseling services that provide a confidential and comfortable environment for people to work on their issues related to depression, anxiety, marital discord, abuse, trauma, and a myriad of other concerns. This program is geared specifically toward people who do not have private insurance or a means to pay for therapy.
previously) with an additional 4,000 square feet available for future expansion as needed. The extended space will enable MHA to:
MHA also offers a Survivors of Suicide Support Group for people who are dealing with the suicide of a friend or loved one.
• Expand the hotline call center stations from three to six, increasing overall call capacity
Anyone seeking help can simply dial 2-1-1, day or night, to speak with a MHA Call Specialist in the event of a personal crisis, or to receive information about health and human services throughout Maryland. Finally, MHA offers a number of educational programs including Mental Health First Aid—a course to teach nonprofessionals how to help someone experiencing a mental health crisis—and a number of educational sessions on stress, depression, anxiety and other topics to businesses, churches and other community groups. The proliferation of all of these services has caused MHA to outgrow their current, very cramped quarters on West Patrick Street downtown, thus necessitating the move to the new building. The new facility, once renovated, will have over 11,000 square feet of space (compared to their 7,100
• Expand the number of therapy rooms from six to nine as well as add a state-of-the-art play therapy room in order to serve more clients
• Create two group therapy rooms, one of which will be the new home for the Survivors of Suicide Support Group • Create a large training room for parent education classes as well as for training child care providers and MHA volunteers - both of which require training in excess of 33 hours • Create safe space to host the Supervised Visitation and Monitored Transfer program in-house • Build a child-friendly room to provide care while parents receive services MHA’s hope is that the prominent new location of the building will help to bring greater visibility and awareness to how vital mental health is in all of our lives. With a welcoming new facility to support such essential programs and services in the Frederick community, MHA is the place where anyone can go to seek and receive caring and compassionate support to face life’s many challenges.

Making the Holidays Enjoyable for Everyone By: Kitty Devilbiss, Community Services Manager, Frederick County Department of Aging Holidays are a time that can bring a mixture of emotions for all of us. We get so caught up in the rush of shopping, cooking and decorating that we can feel overwhelmed. In addition to the chaos of getting ready, many older adults may experience feelings of sadness around the holidays. They remember and miss friends and family who are no longer alive. They 54
FALL 2011
recall family gatherings or special activities they are unable to attend, or no long occur. They may feel guilty, angry or disappointed that they no longer are able to physically shop for gifts or celebrate as they once did. They may feel embarrassed that they can no longer afford to entertain or buy gifts for their loved ones.
Older adults and their families can make the upcoming holiday season more enjoyable for everyone by acknowledging the validity of these emotions and making positive changes. The following tips can help families be prepared for and accommodate any changes that may be taking place in their aging loved ones’ overall health, physical appearance or memory. 1. Minimize overstimulation. Provide all family members with a space for rest and quiet times alone. 2. Encourage memories. Play favorite music, look at photographs, and talk about favorite holiday traditions, family stories and memories. Better yet, record the stories for future generations. 3. Establish new traditions. Instead of Grandma cooking a complete holiday dinner, have everyone bring one item. Invite friends and neighbors who would otherwise be alone to a pot-luck dinner. Do away with the sit-down formal dinner and serve appetizers and dessert as family and friends drop in for a visit. Take a trip. Donate time or other resources to a nursing home, animal shelter or child care center. 4. Limit or redefine gift giving. Set a price limit, draw names, give family treasures or heirlooms, exchange handmade gifts, or choose practical items like stamps or grocery gift cards. 5. Include multiple generations in the preparations. Perhaps it’s time for Grandmother to show her teenage grandson how to make an applesauce cake, or the youngest grandchildren bake cookies with their great-grandfather. While these positive changes can help, the holidays may still be a painful reminder for some older adults. Changes in appetite or sleep patterns and feelings of sadness, disappointment, guilt, anger, pain, nervousness or anxiety are all legitimate emotions and concerns for older adults at holiday time. However, if these emotions persist or become overwhelming, then talk with the older adult about getting help and schedule an appointment with a health provider, counselor, social worker or psychologist for a depression screening and further evaluation. With some professional help and/or family support, older adults can find happiness in the holidays again.

Is Your Car Ready for Nasty Weather? Nine Things to Ask Your Vehicle Technician By: Michael Allen, Managing Partner, Fredericktowne Auto Repair & The Lube Center It may be hard to believe, but cold and nasty weather is just around the corner. That means preparing your vehicle now to avoid breakdowns and to keep your family safe in rain, sleet and snow. Now is a good time to ask your technician to check on certain things they may not ordinarily take time to inspect on routine visits—the seldom-noticed parts of your car that can be a huge headache and expensive to repair if warning signs aren’t caught early enough. 1. Noises
All cars make noises, but if your car has been making strange ones lately, it might be worth asking a technician to try and pinpoint the source of the sound. Squeals, grinding and screeching could indicate a problem with your brakes, while
squeaks, knocking and ticking could be coming from your engine or one of its accessories. 2. Warning Lights
Car manufacturers don’t make warning lights amber or red for nothing. They’re meant to attract your attention and alert you to a problem. Let your technician know if you have a warning light on. You never know, sometimes whatever caused the light to illuminate can be an easy fix. 3. Tire Pressure
Ask your technician what your tires’ air pressures were when you first brought the vehicle in. A tire that was considerably low on pressure could indicate a slow leak—something that can be patched before it grows larger and leaves you on the side of the road with a flat tire. Continued on page 62

TRANSPORTATION 4. Tire Wear
8. Battery Power
Technicians can often spot a problem with your car’s alignment or steering just by looking at your tires. Tires that are wearing unevenly or that are “cupped” or “scalloped” could mean your car needs further attention.
Many auto service facilities have battery testers that can quickly and easily tell you the health of your battery. With the cold winter months on the horizon, now is the perfect time to ask your technician to test your battery and see if it needs to be replaced.
5. Brake Pads
This is a great thing to ask if you’re getting a tire rotation. Once your car’s tires are off, it’s a simple matter to peek at the brakes and see how much lining is left. Doing so can alert you to the fact that you may need a brake job in the near future. 6. CV Boots
These little plastic or rubber boots wrap around the flexible CV joint that pairs your car’s axles with its tires (especially on front-wheel-drive cars). If your CV boots crack or wear out, they can let dirt and debris into the CV joint, causing premature failure and an expensive repair job. Replacing broken CV boots is a much more pleasant alternative. 7. Exhaust System
One of the places we rarely see is the underside of our vehicles. That’s why a technician who is under the car anyway can easily spot damage to your car’s exhaust system. Damage could be in the form of a bent or crimped exhaust pipe or an exhaust leak or hole in your muffler. Either way, it’s important to have a damaged exhaust system repaired in order to keep exhaust fumes as far away from the car’s cabin as possible.

Maryland Shakespeare Festival Announces 2011-2012 Season By: Candace Sorensen, Managing Director, Maryland Shakespeare Festival Maryland Shakespeare Festival is a nationally regarded professional classical theatre company. Entering its 13th year, MSF promises a full season of classic theatre with a contemporary twist. For its 2011-2012 season, MSF will present four of William Shakespeare’s productions at All Saints Episcopal Church: Julius Caesar, All’s Well That Ends Well, Much Ado About Nothing, and The Merchant of Venice. MSF’s ensemble of professional local actors will present these plays in their signature Bare Bard style, which was inspired by the stage practices of Shakespeare’s original acting company and performed in the spirit of lively, raucous, and improvisational theatre. Performances of Julius Caesar will take place October 7-9; All’s Well That Ends Well, December 9-11. The two plays will be presented once again in the spring along with Much Ado About Nothing and The Merchant of Venice, March 9 through April 1. The four productions will be performed over four weekends; the
audience can attend three different plays each weekend. This is MSF’s first-ever repertory Shakespeare adventure. In addition to the Bare Bard series, the theatre company, in collaboration with OMBELICO Mask Ensemble, will present an original play, Dead Man’s Mambo, January 20-22 and 27-29, 2012 at the Frederick Cultural Arts Center. Dead Man’s Mambo is a dynamic mix of highly structured scenario, wildly improvised performance, and live music. The play was written and conceived by Brendon Gawel and MSF Artistic Director, John Bellomo. In addition to the main stage productions, MSF’s teen acting company Riotous Youth will perform The Tempest, November 18-19 and Twelfth Night, May 18-19. Come see Frederick’s only true classical theatre. For more information and a season brochure, visit www.mdshakes.org or call 301-668-4090.

Local Fall Events to Enjoy with Children By: Amanda Rodriguez
As the air turns colder and the leaves begin to change color, families begin looking for activities to do indoors to avoid the harsh temperatures of the impending winter. As a mom to three energetic little boys, finding things to keep them occupied during the winter break and during the holiday season is of utmost importance. Fortunately we live in an area filled with numerous opportunities to expose children to arts, athletics, and much more. From annual festivals to impromptu day trips, Frederick and the surrounding area is a great place to raise an active family. 5 Local Events to Enjoy with Children During the Fall 1. Head to the farm. Frederick is a traditionally rural county,
and while industry and commerce have taken over many parts of the city, there are still many farms in the area that are open to the public. Many of them host fall festivals and activities designed
64
FALL 2011
specifically for families with children. One of our favorite local events is Family Festival @ the Farm. It’s an annual event that over 20 area farms participate in, offering a variety of acitivities in a “self-guided adventure” format. Families are invited out to enjoy fall on the farm free of charge. We love it because we can go to our favorite places and check out some new ones while we’re at it! This year’s event is scheduled for October 15 and 16. 2. Artomatic. Are you an art lover who wants to share that love with your children? The Frederick version of Artomatic is slated to be a wonderful opportunity to do just that as a collection of more than 300 artists descend on the old Department of Education building in downtown Frederick. The event, modeled after and supported by the original Artomatic that made its debut in Washington D.C. in 1999, is going to bring all medium of art to the building and allow the community to interact with the artists and their work. Plus, just to up the awesome on the entire event, they will offer workshops and fun programming for kids in addition to other interesting events.

ART: 3. Santa comes to town. Santa Claus makes his yearly
Artomatic Frederick
appearance in Frederick every year on the Friday following Thanksgiving. Head out to the Everyredy Square/Shab Row area and await the big guy’s arrival. It’s quite an exciting event with entertainment and activities lined up for the big day. Santa rolls into town in his horse drawn carriage at precisely 7 p.m. Don’t be late! But in case you are, there are a number of other Frederick area events to get you and the kids in the holiday spirit (see below for more).
www.artomaticfrederick.org/ September 28 - Novemebr 6, 2011
4. Go to the theater. Not the movie theater, the theater theater!
www.wsrr.org/events.htm
Frederick is home to a pretty active theater arts community. There are a number of playhouses and performing arts theaters, and each year they have various programs scheduled for children and/or families. This season, both The Maryland Ensemble Theater’s F.U.N Company and the children’s theater of Way Off Broadway have some exciting events planned specifically for children. Check out their websites for updates on the season’s shows and events. 5. Get out of town. Everyone goes on vacation during the summer, but fall and winter vacations can be just as fun! It’s harder to get away when you’re up to your ears in work deadlines, school events, and after school activities for the kids, but if you can do it, off-season vacations are a great way to take a break, reconnect with the family, and possibly save loads of money while you’re at it. Often, great savings are to be found when you go to beach locales and other summertime destinations during the off-season! We like to head to area amusement parks (like Hershey and Busch Gardens) before they close for the season, but once all of the summer crowds have cleared out. There are considerably fewer patrons and the cooler weather makes a day walking around the park much more comfortable!

ARTS & LEISURE
Festival of Greens Celebrates the Arts and the Holidays By: Shuan Butcher, Executive Director, Frederick Arts Council Frederick has a lot of holiday activities and traditions. One of the newest ones has taken the community by storm. The annual Festival of Greens, now in its fourth year, is a 10-day celebration of the arts and the holidays. The Cultural Arts Center, a 14,000 square foot arts incubator and community arts facility, has played host to the festivities since the beginning. The center is adorned with approximately 100 decorated or themed wreaths and trees, ranging from fancy to funky, and contributed by artists, businesses, community organizations, school groups, and local residents. The event provides a great forum for anyone interested in expressing their creativity, promoting their business, or just wanting to get into the festive spirit. The Festival of Greens runs from Friday, November 25 through Sunday, December 4. During this timeframe, the submitted wreaths and trees are part of a silent auction, allowing potential bidders to purchase these one-of-a-kind creations that they can use to decorate their homes, businesses, or give as gifts in time for the upcoming holidays. As an added bonus, many of the wreaths 70
FALL 2011
and trees have gift certificates and other goodies that come along with them. Bids will close at 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 4 and the wreaths and tress will be available for pickup that evening or the following days. But the decorated wreaths and trees aren’t the only holiday activities taking place during the festival. On Friday, November 25, also known as Frosty Friday in downtown Frederick, a holiday artist market is held where the work of up to 25 artists is on display and available for purchase. From 10-6 p.m., shoppers can buy locally-made products such as jewelry, pottery, paintings, photography, and other hand-crafted items that make great gifts for friends and family members. Free giftwrapping will also be available at the event. Later that evening, at 8 p.m., the Fredericktowne Players will hold its first of many performances of the classic holiday play, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. This delightful comedy is adapted from the best-selling book and is one of the most
successful shows FTP has ever produced. In fact, every show sold out last year. Tickets for the show are $15 for adults and $10 for students. Other performance times for this show include Saturday, November 26 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Sunday, November 27 at 2 p.m.; Friday, December 2 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, December 3 at 2 p.m.; and Sunday, December 4 at 2 p.m. On Thursday, December 1, Celebrate Frederick’s annual Scents and Sweets event will be held starting at 5:30 p.m. Amateurs and professionals alike participate in this annual event showcasing the holiday season through sight and smell. Attendees will have a chance to check out and vote on their favorite gingerbread structures and floral arrangements that reflect the general mood of the holidays. As part of December’s First Saturday activities in downtown Frederick, a Frederick Artist Market will be held on December 3 from 5-9 p.m. Nearly 25 artists will have their artwork on display and available for purchase to provide shoppers with another opportunity to peruse local artwork for unique gift ideas.
In addition, Dancing Bear Toys will also host their ninth annual Holiday Market for Kids at the Cultural Arts Center. Young shoppers can find something special for family, friends, and teachers at this seasonal shop. All products are $8 and under, and the selection is exclusively fair trade. The holiday market will be open on both weekends of the festival and continue for additional weekends in December. Check the Cultural Arts Center website for specific dates and times. And finally, book signings and other activities are planned during the Festival of Greens, including a popular cookbook author appearance and more. Although the theater production has an admission fee, the other activities are free and open to the public. The presenting sponsor of the Festival of Greens is Gaver Holdings with additional support from PNC Bank, Christmas Décor, and Text Design. For theater tickets or for more information, including how to participate, contact the Frederick Arts Council at 301-662-4190 or visit www.frederickartscouncil.org.

BURKITTSVILLE Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Burkittsville is a well preserved, virtually unchanged example of an American townscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the town was a service center for the rural area around it. Churches, houses, and trade establishments along Main Street were bordered at the rear by fields surrounding the town. The mountains rose to the west. To this day, the town retains those early visual characteristics. Main Street’s buildings are still bordered by fields of crops and dairy farms, although there are no longer any commercial establishments in the town. Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War when forces of the Union and Confederate armies engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam. The town’s inhabitants fled for safety to nearby villages. Today, many of Burkittsville’s residents commute to jobs in the nearby metropolitan areas, but the town maintains a strong sense of community through its many services, social activities, special events, and town meetings.

Middletown Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Middletown is a small, rural community steeped in American history. It is located in the beautiful Middletown Valley that stretches between the Catoctin Mountains on the east and South Mountain on the west. A young Lieutenant George Washington, while surveying the South Mountain area, reported that the valley to the east was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Middletown continues to evolve from a settlement of farmers and ranchers to one of tradesmen, craftsmen, businessmen, clergymen, commuters, and retired folk—without losing its agricultural roots. From the stately old Victorian-style homes and soaring church steeples to the rustic dairy farms and modern housing developments, residents find in Middletown a refuge where they can enjoy small-town life as it used to be. Myersville
Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Myersville is strategically located halfway between Frederick and Hagerstown, with convenient access from Interstate 70 to the south and US Route 40 to the north, yet nicely buffered from both by a mile of local road. The outstanding location and beautiful, hilly terrain combined to make the town an attractive location for residential development during the last decades of the 20th century. Today, Myersville takes care to ensure by ordinance and zoning control that its attractive location is matched by attractive development. The Canada Hill development and three other developments built in the 1990s—Ashley Hills, Meadowridge, and Terraces of South Mountain—exemplify the same standards of appearance set by the town. Mayor

Walkersville Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Walkersville is a combination of two villages that were settled by German immigrants in the mid 1700s and early 1800s. By the late 1800s, the villages of Georgetown and Walkersville had grown so intertwined that it made sense to combine them into one entity, which was named Walkersville. Today, Walkersville aggressively pursues fiscal responsibility, recycling projects, and innovation. In 1995, it was credited with having the first State Police bicycle patrol in the nation. There are four schools, residential developments, a shopping center, several businesses and institutions, and numerous restaurants in the town. Walkersville has managed a rapid population growth wisely, enabling it to maintain a friendly, small-town atmosphere. Burgess

Woodsboro Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Early history suggests that the Woodsboro area was a hunting and trapping ground for a wandering tribe of Susquehanna Indians. From early times, the settlement was located at a crossroads on the Indian trail running from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains. When the stagecoach became the primary mode of transportation, the place became an important stop on its itinerary. After the Civil War, the town developed some notoriety as a train stop that offered exceptional accommodations and relaxing pursuits. Today, Woodsboro is still primarily an agricultural area, but an important industry is centered on the three lime quarries that border the town. There are small commercial activities and service providers within the town itself. Burgess
