COMMUNITY \\

Make a day of it IN MIDDLETOWN BY MELISSA JOSEPH MUNTZ, VISIT FREDERICK

Scattered throughout Frederick County are many unique and historic Main Street communities, where the downtown scene is more vibrant now than ever. Big-box stores take a backseat to mom-and-pop operations, restaurants serve up farm fresh meals and visitors discover things they could never have found otherwise. Just below South Mountain nearing the Potomac River, the Town of Middletown is steeped in history and charm. In decades past, troops from the Revolutionary and Civil wars passed through, traveling along the Historic National Road, now a National Scenic Byway. Today, quaint local shops and restaurants are scattered among downtown homes. Community events and larger festivals are common and visitors are always welcome. Here are just a few highlights of the Middletown region, worth a visit:

Lunch and Coffee at The Main Cup 14 W. Main St. | 301.371.4433 | themaincuprestaurant.com The historic building that now hosts The Main Cup was once home to Main’s Ice Cream and Butcher Shop, more than 100 years ago. Visit a Middletown landmark while you enjoy a delicious burger, slider, tacos or salads, or get your caffeine fix with a variety of barista-created drinks. Dinner and lunch are served daily, and breakfast and brunch are also available on weekends. If the weather is nice, relax in the sun of their outdoor patio. If not, there’s plenty of cozy dining space inside.

Hike to the Original Washington Monument 6620 Zittlestown Road | dnr.maryland.gov

The Maryland National Road is part of a six-state All-American Road, National Scenic Byway that spans more than 700 miles from Baltimore through Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois to East St. Louis, Mo. Hop on this scenic byway on U.S. Route 40 through Middletown and enjoy a small portion of its massive history. The road played a crucial part in the country’s westward expansion. Be on the lookout for signs and landmarks showcasing stories about the road and its importance to the people of the 1800s. Pay special attention to Zion Lutheran Church, with its impressive steeple towering over Main Street.

No, this isn’t the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. The very first monument dedicated to George Washington is located on top of South Mountain in Middletown. A beautifully kept trail leads from the visitor center to the site of the monument. The hike is short, and not as rigorous compared to the 2-mile march up the mountain that area residents took to create the rugged stone tower in 1827. Visitors who reach the top of the monument are rewarded with an incredible view. Most of the hiking trail here is part of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. Visitors can enjoy a picnic at a number of shelters, and play in sports fields or at the playground as well. PHOTOGRAPH BY MOLLY FELLIN SPENCE

Ice Cream and Tour of South Mountain Creamery 8305 Bolivar Road | 844-762-6455 | southmountaincreamery.com Take a guided or self-guided tour of this working farm, open every day of the year, rain or shine, to learn how fresh milk is made. Visitors have a chance to feed recently born calves from giant milk bottles each day at 4 p.m., and to watch the cows being milked, starting at 1:30 p.m., daily. When you’re finished making friends with the farm’s residents, check out Karen’s Kountry Store, where you can sample and take home some of the fresh dairy products made on the farm, including premium ice cream, cheese, milk, and yogurt.

Dinner at Dempsey’s Grille 116 W. Main St. | 301.271.7400 | dempseysgrille.com Dempsey’s Grille is a hometown diner on Middletown’s Main Street, family owned and operated by a husband-and-wife team. Closed only on Mondays, this scrumptious spot offers breakfast, lunch, dinner, kids’ specialties, and dessert. Enjoy soft-shell crabs, beer-battered cod, fried chicken, meatloaf and more for dinner. Breakfast offerings include omelets, hot cakes, chipped beef and sausage gravy. Subs, sandwiches, soups and salads are featured for Sunday lunch. No matter the time of day, head over to Dempsey’s for lots of local Maryland treats.

SO MANY REASONS to choose Frederick County as home BY PETER MURRAY, RE/MAX PLUS

Why choose to live in Frederick County? For each member of the community, the reasons vary. Some relocate for work, some come for family and friends, while others are drawn to the area for the livability, affordability and charm that Frederick has to offer. New residents quickly fall in love with the happenings of Downtown Frederick and learn there is something here for everyone. While those may be the reasons why the people come here, it is not why they stay. They stay for all the county has to offer, including outdoor adventures such as the Catoctin Creek Nature Center or the Appalachian Trail, numerous historical Civil War battlefields and the diversity of locally owned restaurants. ROOT FREDERICK: Fostering creation and expansion of business in Frederick County BY JENNIFER GERLOCK, FREDERICK COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

There’s an old building with a new name in the heart of Downtown Frederick. Look for its bold name – ROOT -- on the sign at 118 N. Market St. ROOT is a place where business ideas are born. The concept is a public-private partnership, creating an ecosystem that fosters the creation and expansion of business in Frederick County. ROOT seeks to build a support network of businesses to help each other succeed, creating jobs and growing the area tax base. The concept was first envisioned by Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner to transform the government office space on Market Street into an innovation center. The building’s name is meant to convey growth, strength and a firm sense of place as new businesses put down “roots” in Frederick County. Partners located within ROOT include: the Frederick County Office of Economic Development; the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce; a new business incubator and accelerator operating under the umbrella of the Frederick Innovative Technology Center, Inc. (FITCI); the Frederick Center for Research and Education in Science and Technology (CREST); the Hood College Martha Church Center for Civic Engagement; Tech Maryland; Fort Detrick Technology Transfer Office; Maryland Women’s Business Center; and the Frederick County Minority Vision Leadership Program. “The tenants are complementary. By being in such close proximity, we’re able to partner and speak with a strong, common voice to advocate for business in Frederick County,” said Frederick County Chamber President and CEO Rick Weldon. A few examples of gatherings you’ll discover at ROOT on any given day: • A U.S. Congressman visits with a group of Chamber members to learn about small business concerns.

• A successful woman-owned business is expanding, and receiving an overview of the business landscape before embarking on a tour of available commercial real estate. • The Frederick Nonprofit Alliance is planning its upcoming nonprofit accounting workshop. • An upstart IT company is unpacking furniture in the new incubator/ accelerator at FITCI. • Frederick CREST is hosting a group of professors and administrators from Johns Hopkins University to determine whether Frederick can support Hopkins-taught biotech classes with onsite training at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research in Frederick. • The Entrepreneur Council of Frederick County is videotaping first-person stories capturing the challenges of rapidly growing businesses. thefrederickguide.com

// B U S I N E S S

• Leadership Frederick is finalizing plans for Ag Day, bringing business leaders together with agricultural partners throughout the county. • The Spanish Speaking Community of Maryland, a mother/daughter business, is reviewing photos from the Chamber’s grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for their new location. • Hood College is meeting with Frederick’s major employers to secure internship opportunities. • A Chamber member is dropping off a donation for Frederick County Public Schools STEM-focused high-school apprentice scholarship fund. ROOT is truly a place where the entrepreneurs and business leaders of Frederick County can collaborate, share ideas and find success. County Executive Gardner agrees. “ROOT is one of my key business initiatives,” she said. “I am so excited to see it come to life. All

the partners at ROOT support innovation, ideas and our emerging and growing industries. New jobs and new businesses have always come from innovation. It’s this forward-looking mission that led to ROOT’s tag line: ‘Dig Deep. Cultivate Tomorrow.’ “ROOT is more than just a building or just a place,” she added. “It is a cohesive collaboration of people who are dedicated to digging deep to support new ideas, new and existing business and new jobs for Frederick County. We are cultivating tomorrow by creating an ecosystem to help businesses take root and grow in our community. Frederick County is truly leading the way with ROOT.”

FIND OUT FIRST:

Discover What’s Happening in Public Education BY DR. TERRY ALBAN, SUPERINTENDENT, FREDERICK COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) is excited to launch a refresh of the FindOutFirst school email and emergency-closing text messaging service for the 2018-2019 school year. The good news is, parents no longer have to update their child’s school and grade level each year. And schools can target grade-level news to meet parents’ interests. Often, when school systems take this step it becomes more difficult for non-parent community members to get school email. Not so in Frederick County. FCPS purposely selected an open FindOutFirst service so everybody can get the news they choose. Not only can parents log in to add district-level news areas of interest, but also family members who are not parents can sign up at www.fcps.org/fof. While FCPS can’t afford to translate each message, FOF includes a built-in Google Translate feature to read email in Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, French and Urdu. More languages are available on each school’s FOF web page for viewing archived notices and newsletters, not requiring a log in process or account. Even the high school student email addresses that FCPS issues are uploaded to get FOF email, so students can log in to add phone number, carrier and verification codes and get emergency-closing text messages on snow days. Last but not least, FCPS continues to link employee email addresses to Employee News accounts, but now with a work location. Staff, too, can choose news areas of interest — both news specifically for employees and the news areas everyone can select.

Maybe you’re a senior citizen who wants to know when to attend the next student concert or theatre production, free! We know that support of public education pays great dividends in student achievement. Sign up today for FCPS news. Like other school districts, FCPS emails and sends text messages when schools are closing unexpectedly. Closing notices are posted on www.fcps.org and on FCPS Maryland Facebook and Twitter @FCPSMaryland social media tools, as well as with radio and TV stations. According to Facebook comments, many people learn about a snow day on there before getting an email or text, but we know it’s the FOF service that’s delivering the Facebook and Twitter messages, with links to all the details parents need. FindOutFirst is news from the source and information readers can trust. FCPS is committed to delivering the school news our community needs to engage everyone in supporting public education and equipping students to succeed.

+ For more about FCPS:

Some of the FOF news options are special education, calendar updates, job openings, FCPS TV/YouTube programs, BOE action, news releases and superintendent’s messages, with links to weekly blog updates and more. Parents are encouraged to log in to their accounts and try some of the news areas. Business partners, community organizations, government officials and everyone in our community are also invited to sign up. 26

Monocacy Valley Dental 65 Thomas Johnson Drive, Suite B, Frederick 301-698-0044 / monocacyvalleydental.com

Almost anyone, at any age, can experience orthopedic conditions, from sports-related fractures to podiatric bone spurs to osteoporosis or arthritis. Orthopedics is the medical specialty that cares for injuries and disease of the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons.

One very special member of the team at Monocacy Valley Dental makes going to the dentist a much more pleasant experience. Patton the dental therapy dog is ready and willing to give kisses and snuggles in the waiting room or sit on your lap during a dental treatment, all to make your experience more comfortable.

With four locations in the region, Robinwood Orthopaedic Specialty Center, a Division of the Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics, aims to offer expert care with a patient-centered focus. Since its founding in the 1950s, Robinwood Orthopaedic has had as its mission providing patients with the highest quality care possible. To provide this standard of care, members of the center’s medical staff not only have excellent educational credentials and broad experience, but also continue to hone their skills through ongoing training and professional associations. With offices in Frederick, Hagerstown, Martinsburg, W.Va., and Waynesboro, Pa., Robinwood Orthopaedic serves patients from infancy through senior citizens, and offers help on the road to healing. Because the staff at Robinwood Orthopaedic Specialty Center knows that dealing with a health problem is already stressful, they aim to make it easier for patients to get the help they need by providing all-inclusive care – from diagnostic tests to treatment – at the Hagerstown facility. Services at all locations include diagnostic services, surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation/physiatry, sports medicine, fracture care, spinal care and interventional pain management.

“He’s truly one amazing puppy who knows how to melt anyone’s heart and put a smile on your face,” according to Kristen Motz, practice administrator and wife to practice owner Brian K. Motz, DDS. Dr. Motz was born and raised in Hagerstown and graduated from the University of Maryland College of Dental Surgery, finishing his clinical requirements a year early to spend his final year focusing on oral surgery. He and his wife now live in Middletown with their two English Bulldogs, Patton and Sherman. The whole Monocacy Valley Dental staff prides itself on getting to know patients personally and treating them like family. The practice began in Frederick about 40 years ago, and about five years ago, Dr. Motz purchased the business and vowed to continue its high-quality dental treatments and personal care for patients. Motz and his team have added innovative technology, specialty treatment options such as dental implants, cosmetic dentistry and patient care enhancements, such as Patton. Thanks to Dr. Motz and his staff’s advanced clinical skills, many treatments can be done in-house, including surgical extractions, root canals, teeth whitening, and 3D scans.

Frederick Pediatric Dentistry, LLC 77A Thomas Johnson Drive, Frederick 301-682-6887 / fpdentistry.com

At the Frederick office, child-friendly artwork and a 155-gallon saltwater reef aquarium greet patients as they arrive. Pediatric dental treatment is provided in a private room with the parents always present. Private rooms were chosen, Camacho said, because he has found that children are more comfortable when they are in their own soothing space with a family member by their side. Within each exam room, dental patients can watch their favorite shows during their visit. Orthodontic patients enjoy a more casual open exam area, also fitted with TVs for their viewing pleasure. Camacho and his staff stress preventive care and education, and believe in the “cutting edge,” always look for the newest technologies and philosophies available. At Frederick Pediatric Dentistry, there are four pediatric dentists, one orthodontist and one general dentist to treat older patients.

Frederick Pediatric Dentistry stands for quality dentistry for the young patient in a relaxed, child-friendly environment. “We are proud of the fact that we take the time necessary to help your child through the dental experience in the least traumatic way possible,” said practice owner and founder Dr. Joseph Camacho, DDS. Dr. Camacho has more than 30 years of experience in pediatric dentistry, and started the practice in Frederick about 21 years ago. The practice began as a two-chair, 1,600 square-foot space and has grown to a two-location practice encompassing 9,000 square feet and 17 operatories, in Frederick and Hagerstown.

The practice maintains a strong commitment to continuing education, re-licensure, and active participation in organized dentistry in order to provide patients with the utmost in safe, comfortable care using the most current treatment approaches available. The specialists at Frederick Pediatric Dentistry have all completed two-year residency programs beyond the required four years of dental school in order to increase and focus their training in pediatric dentistry or orthodontics. Each doctor is a recognized specialist in his or her respective field of pediatric dentistry or orthodontics. Dr. Camacho and the other doctors and staff at Frederick Pediatric Dentistry focus on comprehensive pediatric dentistry in a calm, compassionate family-friendly environment and offer complimentary exams for patients younger than 18 months. REINVENTING SENIOR LIVING in Mind, Body and Soul STORY AND PHOTOS COURTESY OF INTEGRACE BUCKINGHAM’S CHOICE

When it comes to choosing where and how to spend their retirement years, seniors’ expectations are changing. Today, residents of senior living communities want the freedom to live in the way that is most meaningful to them, and to be involved in the creation of their own programming. At Integrace Buckingham’s Choice in Frederick, a local life plan community, the goal is to provide its residents with more opportunities than ever to live well in mind, body and soul. “At Buckingham’s Choice, wellness is at the core of everything we do, and we recognize that every individual defines wellness differently,” says Rick Curtis, executive director. “We provide every space, connection and option for our residents to be actively involved in creating the quality of life they desire now and in the future, and to explore the avenues of life that bring them joy and contentment.” For those who choose to make their physical fitness a priority, Buckingham’s Choice provides an array of programs for residents at every level of ability to maintain their mobility, agility and cardiac health. From traditional forms of exercise using treadmills and crosstraining machines, to small group classes focused on fall prevention and maintaining flexibility, residents wishing to stay active can choose the activity and setting that best suits them. Dave Tooher, who leads the fitness initiative at Buckingham’s Choice, continuously looks for new and innovative ways to help residents build strength and prevent injuries. A new iBalance machine uses video game-like exercises to measure and improve balance abilities, and a new Tai Chi class has quickly become popular with residents, he said. “Everyone at Buckingham’s Choice has the opportunity to live with independence and dignity,” said Jim Ryan, president of the Buckingham’s Choice Residents Association. When it comes to eating well, the community’s dining philosophy is about providing plenty of options. Residents have the freedom to enjoy their favorite foods as well as healthy options, whether they desire low-sodium, heart-healthy dishes or MIND diet-inspired meals that promote cognitive health.

40

thefrederickguide.com

“We are constantly in search of new ways to improve our resident’s dining experience,” says Aaron Tucker, general dining manager. “We make every effort possible to allow our food to nurture and serve as a means of fulfillment physically, emotionally and even spiritually.” Buckingham’s Choice residents and colleagues are also passionate about giving back to the greater Frederick community. Through numerous partnerships with local organizations and charities, everyone is encouraged to feed their souls and contribute in the way that is most meaningful to them to create a stronger community. With more options than ever to try new activities, make healthier choices and discover new passions, the people who call Buckingham’s Choice home are inspired to view aging as a time to grow, learn and thrive.

GLIDE THROUGH FREDERICK On An Electric Ride BY HAILEY PLOSKI-SARNO

Pedego Electric Bikes is changing the game in Frederick when it comes to the bicycle you learned to ride as a kid. You may have seen gas-powered motorbikes, motorcycles and mopeds, but these are not those. Pedego offers hybrid-electric bikes that you can pedal if you want. They aren’t loud or heavy as you might expect, and since they handle like a regular bike, there’s no extra special training required. If you’re scratching your head and wondering this works, let me break it down: Pedego bikes have four basic parts: the motor, the battery, the throttle and the pedal assist. The motor is kind of like a regular bike motor, so you can shift gears depending on the terrain or incline you’re riding on, although it does connect with the other three parts. The battery is rechargeable, and actually has a USB charger that only takes about two to six hours to charge. The throttle connects with the pedal assist on the handlebars, so when you twist the throttle and it activates the battery-powered pedal assist. You get a little extra juice when you pedal on the lowest setting, and on the highest, you actually don’t need to pedal at all. When you walk into Pedego Frederick, located on South Carroll Street, just up from the street from Sky Stage, you’ll be greeted by a line of brightly colored, classic-looking bicycles all lined up neatly on a big beautiful rug that Ringo Starr himself once stood on. And let’s not forget the star of the show, Arlo, the sweetest dog, a Great Pyrenees/German Shepherd mix, who serves as the shop mascot. When you arrive, you’ll get the lowdown on bike rentals and tours. You can rent an electric bike to explore Frederick on your own for just an hour, or for all day. They also offer a number of different kinds of tours. Currently, a “Fall in Love with Frederick” tour is available. During the 90-minute ride, “Director of Fun” Caitlin introduces you to Frederick’s rich history and famous landmarks while guiding you through the city’s most charming neighborhoods. The tour covers about 8 miles, but you can sit back and enjoy the ride, without having to worry about headwinds or hills. Another option offered right now is the Pedals and Puzzles tour, which for $60 per player, allows you to explore the city while competing in a scavenger hunt arranged by Downtown Frederick business Surelocked In. At the end of each month, the highest scoring team wins $100 worth of prizes from Surelocked In and Pedego.

You may be asking: What is it actually like riding one of these electric bikes? Honestly, it’s a little spooky at first, but let me tell you, once you get the hang of it, it’s so much fun! The bikes have all of the regular bike controls, such as a handbrake and gear shifters, but when the throttle kicks in, you feel like a superhero for a split second. For me, the moment of superhero glory was met abruptly by panic over how I was going to turn around going so fast. I was assured that I was not actually going very fast, as I never went any higher than the lowest setting on the throttle (maybe 3 mph). These bikes can reach up to 20 mph! Rentals for premium bikes runs $25 per hour, or $100 for a whole day. For specialty bikes, it’s $35 per hour, and $120 per day. Locks and helmets are included with every rental. If you take one on a spin and decide that you can no longer live your best life without owning one, not to worry. Pedego Frederick sells and services electric bikes locally. One will cost you about $1,500 to purchase, but they require very little maintenance, with tune-ups recommended every six months. For zipping around town, you’ll find these are way more convenient and efficient than an SUV.

HOLIDAYS IN FREDERICK Bring Magic and Cheer BY GARRETT JOHNSTON, PROGRAM COORDINATOR, CELEBRATE FREDERICK

Rediscover the wonder of Downtown Frederick by spending the holiday season here. With a range of family-friendly events from the Holiday Art Competition in November through Frederick’s Festival of Lights on Dec. 14, Celebrate Frederick is planning to bring some cheer to your holiday season. Celebrate Frederick is a private, nonprofit corporation that works in partnership with the City of Frederick “to plan and implement special events and activities to offer the community a shared cultural experience.” Its first holiday event is the Holiday Art Competition on Nov. 28. The essence of Frederick’s community spirit will be on display during this event at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center, 40 S. Carroll St., Frederick. Take in a delightful exhibit in the Gardner Gallery of original holiday artwork created by Frederick artists. From the exhibit submissions, judges will select the winning work of art to be featured for the 2018 “The Holidays” Event Series. A prize of $1,000 will be awarded to the winner, and the $100 Barbara Maghan People’s Choice award will be presented on the night of the competition. Enjoy free light hors d’oeuvres and wine while viewing the works on display. Next is the Scents and Sweets Competition on Nov. 29.The holidays bring out the creativity in all of us, so why not let the gingerbread structures and floral arrangements at this year’s Scents & Sweets competition inspire you? Floral designers will display some truly spectacular winter arrangements for the community to enjoy, and for those with a sweet tooth; local gingerbread architects will submit their confectionary creations. The community can choose their favorites, so make sure you stop by and vote. Historic Downtown Frederick comes alive with the Candlelight House Tours on Dec. 1 and 2. This self-guided walking tour takes visitors inside private homes elaborately adorned with holiday decor throughout Historic Frederick. Visitors are delighted year after year with the architectural nuances, decorations and historical significance of these magnificent homes. Serving as this year’s complimentary Hospitality Center, the William R. Talley Recreation Center at 121 N. Bentz St., holds just as much history as many of the homes

on the tour. Warm up there with a cup of hot chocolate or cider or grab a light snack. The holiday spirit builds as the Kris Kringle Procession comes to downtown on Dec. 7. The parade begins at the corner of South Carroll and East Patrick streets in Frederick and ends in Baker Park with the lighting of the City Tree. The procession celebrates the small-town charm that makes Frederick so special during the holidays. Local children dressed as reindeer, snowflakes, angels, elves and gifts and other holiday-themed characters will accompany

some modern, some traditional, costumed characters, such as through Frederick’s streets. The whole family is sure to have a ball — a snowball, that is — as the Kris Kringle Procession makes it way through Frederick. Celebrate Frederick’s culminating holiday event is the Festival of Lights on Dec. 14. Each year the Festival of Lights brings the true spirit of the season to young and old alike. Holiday greetings, carols and an inspirational message are all part of this tradition-based event. Attendees gather in front of City Hall, sign carols and participate in a moving candle-lighting ceremony, filling the courtyard with magnificent glowing light.

+ About Celebrate Frederick

Celebrate Frederick conducts 11 events each year, with the help of more than 400 volunteers who serve on planning committees or assist on the day of events. The City of Frederick Office of Special Events’ staff also supports the events. The events serve to enhance the quality of life experienced in the City of Frederick and have become an integral part of the community. Most are free to the public; those that charge admission donate funds to a beautification project in the City of Frederick. Find out more at celebratefrederick.com. EMMITSBURG IS FILLED WITH REVERENCE AND HISTORY BY GINA GALLUCCI-WHITE

At the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes in Emmitsburg, a sign-in book asks visitors “How did you hear about us?” Shrine Director Lori Stewart notes that many of the responses she sees are “friends or family told us” or “We saw the statue” from U.S. Route 15. Many visitors to the storied shrine simply get curious and stop by. While driving along Route 15 through Emmitsburg, motorists can’t help but see the 25-foot gold-leafed statue of the Blessed Mother nestled in the mountains by the Mount St. Mary’s University campus. Nearly 400,000 visitors on average, including international guests, make their way to the religious site each year. It features the Corpus Christi Chapel, built in 1905 on the original grotto site by the Rev. John DuBois, and the Grotto of Lourdes Cave, a replica of one built in France by seminarians in 1875. “Many have had experiences of peace and serenity and an increase in faith [here], so then they share with a lot of their friends and families,” Stewart said. The site receives many recurring visitors of different faiths from the Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Arlington, Va., areas. Some come for Mass, adoration or reconciliation, or to light a candle for a loved one. Others are looking for answers, a place for peace or a site to pray.

“I think leaving, they feel satisfied for whatever reason they are visiting,” Stewart says. This year, the grotto is marking the 60th anniversary of becoming a shrine. A celebration was held in September, featuring a Mass by the Archbishop of Baltimore, William E. Lori. “It is very exciting to know that we are here at this time,” Stewart says. “Sixty years ago, Monsignor (Hugh) Phillips opened the grotto to the public and it has been a blessing to many, including us, ever since.” Just south of the Mason Dixon line, the Town of Emmitsburg is home to more than 3,000 residents. “It’s a great place, such a dynamic little place,” says Mayor Don Briggs. Founded in 1785 and incorporated in 1825, the town is known for its downtown eating spots, serving classic American fare and seafood at Carriage House Inn or a drink after work at The Ott House Pub. Every year, the town welcomes more than 1,000 students to the Mount St. Mary’s University campus, which offers more than 40 majors, minors, concentrations, interdisciplinary and special programs. “All this energy is happening here (in Emmitsburg) every day,” Briggs says.

Frederick County’s most northern town is actually home to two shrines. The National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton explores the life and legacy of the first American-born saint, Seton. Born in 1774 to a well-to-do family in New York City, Elizabeth married a wealthy businessman, William Seton, at age 19. The couple had five children and took in William’s six younger siblings. Due to blockades and loss of ships, William’s business went into bankruptcy and he died of tuberculosis while in Italy. “At that time women didn’t have really any rights to anything, but with family and friends, Elizabeth really found a way to thrive,” after her husband’s death, says Helen Jahn, the Seton Shrine’s marketing manager. Seton made her way to Emmitsburg to start the first Catholic girls’ school in the United States and founded the first American community for religious women, the Sisters of Charity. “The primary purpose of that congregation was to serve those in need,” Jahn says. “The first way they did that was through this free school for girls.” Seton faced many challenges in her life, Jahn explained, yet she still was able to do amazing things and helped those in need and helped girls at a time when no one else was doing much for girls and education.

“She, herself, knew the importance of education … so that is why she made sure to help girls with that effort,” Jahn said. Today, nearly 6,000 visitors make their way to the Seton Shrine and experience the museum with exhibits and a film dedicated to her life and a basilica for prayer. Seton’s remains are entombed on the property, and the two houses she called home, the Stone and White houses, still stand. “We just hope that (visitors) have a memorable visit and they feel they have learned something, primarily about this woman who lived back in the early 1800s, but still did some tremendous things to help people in need and especially girls in need in this area,” Jahn says. “We hope they also leave encouraged or inspired that if they are facing their own difficulties … that they too have the strength to face any challenges and move on from them.” Emmitsburg is also home to the National Emergency Training Center, formerly the site of Saint Joseph College, which includes the National Fire Academy, Emergency Management Institute and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) and Memorial. Every October, the foundation welcomes about 5,000 visitors to town during a memorial weekend to honor the memory of firefighters from across the country who died in the line of duty. Families meet one another, participate in a candlelight service and watch a ceremony featuring prominent speakers. In years’ past, Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama have given keynote addresses during the ceremony. “I think (the event) helps some of the families with closure,” says Chief Ronald J. Siarnicki, NFFF executive director. Created in 1992 by the U.S. Congress, the nonprofit honors firefighters who have died in the line of duty, and provides support programs and scholarships for family members. NFFF also advocates to prevent line-of-duty deaths and injuries. “The idea behind the outreach and the programs is to help the families put their lives back together ... to find a new level of normalcy, whatever that might be,” Siarnicki says. “We work to help them with life skills. We work to help them with scholarships. We work to help them with grief from the trauma.” Guests may visit the memorial park, which features a monument listing those who have died since 1981 along with a bronze statue titled “To Lift A Nation,” recreating the iconic photograph of three firefighters raising an American flag over the rubble of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. “It is our nation’s tribute to almost 4,000 firefighters who have died serving their communities,” he said. “It is a very solemn place.”

Because the park is on the grounds of a federal facility, guests will need to check in at the main gate, where they will be issued a pass to walk around. If visitors would like to tour classrooms, they should call ahead so an employee may escort them around the campus. “It’s a nice place to see that, we as a nation, are doing our best to never forget those fallen heroes and that their families are being supported,” Siarnicki said. When it comes to Emmitsburg, Siarnicki said the town and its offerings are all interconnected through “remembrance, respect and education.”

BRUNSWICK

RESOURCES:

The once-sleepy City of Brunswick, located along the Potomac River, with close proximity to the C&O Canal, Harper’s Ferry, Antietam, Leesburg and Charlestown, is now filled with a new air of excitement.

Elected Officials

MAYOR

Residents (about 6,000 currently), business owners and city officials are stepping up efforts to revive and reinvent their community. Seeking to redefine Brunswick as an attractive outdoor destination, they are working to fill empty downtown storefronts, opening new businesses and building trails for hiking and biking.

Jeff Snoots (term expires August 2020)

Antiques & Ole Stuff O 301-514-6220

With the city working on a new municipal building, a new music and events venue opening downtown, and the continuous expansion of Brunswick Crossing – a population-doubling housing development – Brunswick may finally be on track to change its fortune from the 1950s, when the railroad pulled out of the city abruptly..

Veterans Day Parade Brunswick’s Veterans Day Parade is one of the oldest in the country. It began in 1932, six years before Veterans Day became recognized as a national holiday. Brunswick is one of only two Veterans Day sites in Maryland to be officially sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which allows official military groups — such as the Armed Forces Color Guard of Washington, D.C. — to participate. This year, the event is set for Nov. 5.

BURKITTSVILLE Burkittsville is a virtually unchanged example of an American townscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the town was a service center for the rural area around it. Today, Main Street’s buildings are still bordered by fields of crops and dairy farms, although there are no longer any commercial establishments in the town. Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War when forces of the Union and Confederate armies engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam.

MIDDLETOWN Middletown is a small, rural community steeped in American history. It is located in the beautiful Middletown Valley that stretches between the Catoctin Mountains on the east and South Mountain on the west. A young Lt. George Washington, while surveying the South Mountain area, reported that the valley to the east was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Middletown continues to evolve from a settlement of farmers and ranchers to one of tradesmen, craftsmen, businessmen, clergymen, commuters and retired folk–without losing its agricultural roots. From the stately old Victorian-style homes and soaring church steeples to the rustic dairy farms and modern housing developments, residents find in Middletown a refuge where they can enjoy small-town life as it used to be.

Located directly off of Interstate 70, it is about 45 minutes from both the Baltimore and Washington metropolitan job markets. One can quickly become enamored with downtown Mount Airy and its small-town charm, quaint old buildings and friendliness that takes you back to a time long past. Mount Airy has experienced a dramatic increase in growth, but because of effective growth management and land use strategies, still retains that quaint, small-town atmosphere. It boasts a booming downtown with community and cultural events, retail establishments, antique and craft collectible shops, cafes and restaurants.

URBANA Nestled in the southeastern section of the county near major arteries such as Interstate 270 and Md. Routes 355 and 80, Urbana has become a haven for Montgomery County residents looking to move north and Frederick or Pennsylvania folks aiming to be closer to Washington, D.C., yet still live in a quiet, country setting. Villages of Urbana and Urbana Highlands subdivisions comprise the largest communities. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, the Urbana region has more than 9,000 residents, and that number is still climbing.

WOODSBORO Early history suggests that the Woodsboro area was a hunting and trapping ground for a wandering tribe of Susquehanna Indians. From early times, the settlement was located at a crossroads on the Indian trail running from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains. When the stagecoach became the primary mode of transportation, the place became an important stop on its itinerary. Today, Woodsboro is still primarily an agricultural area, but an important industry is centered on the three lime quarries that border the town.
