COMMUNITY \\

FREDERICK COUNTY Offers Visitors Animal Encounters BY MELISSA JOSEPH MUNTZ, VISIT FREDERICK

There is only one place in the Mid-Atlantic where you can board an open-air truck and ride through the habitats of emus, zebras and bison. That place is Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo in Thurmont. During your hour-long journey, animals of all kinds will approach your vehicle giving your family the opportunity to feed and photograph them. If you would rather stroll at your own pace, the zoo also offers walking paths surrounding more than 450 exotic animals. Camel rides and parakeet feedings are among the other fun activities available to visitors. If your family has never made a trip to a working farm, South Mountain Creamery in Middletown is a great destination for you. Take a guided tour of the farm to learn how fresh milk is made, or you can also visit the cows on your own. Visitors have a chance to feed the calves daily from large bottles of milk, and to watch the cows being milked. When you’re finished making friends with the creamery’s residents, check out Karen’s Kountry Store, where you can sample and take home some of the fresh dairy products you just witnessed being made. You’ll have a hard time turning down a taste of their fresh ice cream.

If you have a bird lover in your midst, you’ll want to visit the aviary at Cunningham Falls State Park in Thurmont. The birds and reptiles that reside here are part of the Scales and Tales program, an effort by the State of Maryland to expose visitors to stories of

Do you know someone who is obsessed with all things creepy and crawly? Fountain Rock Nature Center, located in Walkersville, is home to Madagascar hissing cockroaches, Vietnamese walking sticks, an observation honeybee hive, bearded dragons, snakes, tarantulas and more creatures. The surrounding park also offers a fishing pond and natural wetlands where you can find frogs, turtles and other native animals. Catoctin Creek Nature Center, located in Jefferson, is also home to many live animal that are naturally found in Frederick County. With its playground, pavilion and outdoor sensory trail, Catoctin Creek Nature Center is also a great place to have a picnic lunch and spend some time in the sun.

From the red-tailed hawk, to the snowy owl, to the biggest snapping turtle you’ve ever seen, these characters are can’t-miss for animal lovers. This location is even home to a live, and sometimes very noisy, bald eagle.

KEEPING BUYERS AND SELLERS SAFE in the Real Estate Market

BY KAREN HIGHLAND, COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR, FREDERICK COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® AND MEG GAWLER, LAKESIDE TITLE

During the home sale process, many different buyers are coming and going through your home. While the vast majority of these buyers have no malicious intent, there is no need to expose your family or your home and possessions to anyone who may have bad motives. Sellers can benefit from the following nine safety tips to protect loved ones and personal belongings. 1. Put away your valuables. Putting away your collectibles and valuable items, such as cash, jewelry, small electronics and expensive décor, means more safety. It probably won’t be a surprise that the master bedroom is the No. 1 target for thieves. 2. Lock your guns and any other weapons away, and keep them out of sight. Attics are a great thing to use when your home is on the market. 3. Lock your medicines and pharmaceuticals away, and out of sight. It is unfortunate, but the police department gets regular reports of theft from homeowners’ medicine cabinets.

the system and view the home. Ultimately, you want your home to be available and easy to show when buyers want to see it. 9. Work with a Realtor®. One of the best ways to ensure safety and to make sure random people are not walking through your house is to work with a Realtor® when you want to sell your home. One of the duties Realtors® perform is to list your home on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS). The MLS communicates to all cooperating agents the conditions under which the seller chooses to show their home.

4. Depersonalize your home. This is good advice for anyone getting his or her home ready to sell. Realtors® often advise sellers to minimize highly personalized décor to appeal to the largest number of buyers. You may consider removing some of your family photos. Look at it this way: you are going to be moving soon, so why not get a head start on the packing? 5. Hide personal information, such as calendars, important paperwork, lists or phone numbers.

7. Enlist the help of neighbors. They can alert you if they see any suspicious behavior from visitors. 8. Consult with your Realtor® about your current home security system. If you leave the system on, you will need to provide your Realtor® with a code to disable the system. Your Realtor® will provide that code to the buyer’s agent so they can turn off

20

thefrederickguide.com

iSTOCKPHOTO.COM / HIGHWAYSTARZ-PHOTOGRAPHY

6. Consider installing security cameras. Prices on home security cameras have become more affordable in recent years. A home seller should disclose to potential buyers that there are home security cameras in use. Audio recordings are not allowed in Maryland without consent. Consult with your Realtor® for details on this and for their recommendations.

MAIN STREET ASSOCIATION helps promote Mount Airy businesses BY GINA GALLUCCI-WHITE

On the Town of Mount Airy’s logo, you will find the slogan “Heart of the Four-County Community.” The heart of the town itself, according to Ellie Bonde, president of the Mount Airy Main Street Association (MAMSA), is the downtown area. “It is the old heart of the community, and we want it to remain the heart of the community,” Bonde said. “In our logo that we use, there is a little heart. The town also has a little heart on the town logo but if the heart isn’t healthy then there are indications that the rest of the community needs help, too. We are trying to maintain a healthy heart with vibrant businesses, making (the town) look good and doing (events) that will bring people downtown.” In 2004, Mount Airy was awarded the Main Street Maryland Community designation, which was created by the state’s Department of Housing and Community Development in 1998 to strengthen the economic potential of traditional neighborhoods and focal byways. The approach focuses on five points: design, organization, promotion, economic restructuring and clean, safe and green. In years past, MAMSA had held events every month, but eventually moved away from the idea. This year, they are looking to do monthly events again to promote visiting the historic downtown for goods and services. “We are at a rebranding, a rebirth, a re-acknowledging of who we are, what we are here for and the fact that we are looking for volunteers to join our group,” Bonde said. Folks don’t have to own, rent or work downtown to become a member of MAMSA. Anyone can join and the group is looking for people to bring new ideas as well as help with planning. “We are energized and excited about drawing attention to what we have,” Bonde says. “...I think there is just a general excitement about making what we have — I don’t know if the right word is ‘better’ because it is already great — making it more well known. Sharing it with the world.” The association is planning multiple events throughout the year, including old favorites and new ones. Folks from across the East Coast annually make their way to Mount Airy in April for the 24

annual Chili Cook Off, which is sanctioned by the International Chili Society. Chili afficionados from Connecticut, Ohio and the Carolinas competed with their perfected recipes in the past. In July the town is set to host the annual Celebrate Summer event, featuring a movie and sidewalk chalk art competition. History 101 is a weeklong September event featuring speakers at various locations around Mount Airy.

October will feature a harvest festival and cornhole competition, while November offers shoppers a chance to get a head start on holiday shopping with a holiday preview event during which shops stay open later. The annual Main Street Christmas celebration includes a tree lighting ceremony and Santa Claus visit. Aside from adding an art and music celebration in early June, association members are also planning new events for May and August. MASMA also hosts a farmers market every Wednesday from mid-May to late August. For nearly 20 years, Bonde has been the co-owner of the Main Street-based Blossom and Basket Boutique. She said events such as the ones hosted by MAMSA help to bring foot traffic to her store. During a well-attended Chocolate Crawl in February, she estimates that about 300 people came through her shop during extended evening hours for the event. The events help to let folks know about their businesses and what goods they offer to the community. “It’s a win-win for a lot of people,” Bonde said. “It’s an interactive family activity.”

MARYLAND SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF Celebrates 150th anniversary In the fall of 1868, 34 students arrived at the Maryland School for the Deaf, its first class of students. Studies began in the stark abandoned stone barracks that had housed captured Hessian soldiers during the Revolutionary War, but a few years later, by autumn 1875, a new building was added to accommodate the school’s growth. Today’s sprawling campus, located off Market Street in Downtown Frederick, is much more impressive, with fountains, walkways lined with trees, modern facilities and an abundance of open space. The Maryland School for the Deaf is currently celebrating its 150th school year. The school is also celebrating the 60th anniversary of the integration of African-American students, the 45th anniversary of the establishment of its Columbia Campus, and the 30th anniversary of the MSD Foundation. MSD was established by the Maryland General Assembly in 1867, and opened the following year in Frederick. They lived and studied for several years at the Frederick Town Barracks, also known as the Hessian Barracks. In the fall of 1875, the newly constructed Victorian building known as the Old Main was opened to serve a growing student population. After almost 100 years, the Old Main was torn down to make way for the Ely Building and other school buildings that were constructed between 1975 and 1985. In recent years, a new elementary/family education complex and a school cafeteria were built. MSD student enrollment grew to more than 400 students during the 1980s due to a worldwide rubella epidemic in the 1960s. In spite of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) law’s Least Restrictive Education provision, MSD student enrollment today has been steady at about 500 students. MSD continues to be the first choice for the majority of families residing in Maryland, and attracting families from all over the United States. During its history, MSD has had nine principals or superintendents leading the school. Since the school’s beginning, the focus has been on early language acquisition to support students’ cognitive, linguistic and social development and their future academic

and career successes. A rigorous academic curriculum is central to MSD’s purpose, and after-school programs, such as clubs, athletics, drama and student employment, serve to make each student well-rounded. Today, instruction includes Chromebooks for every middle school and high school student, SmartBoards in every classroom, and access to the internet and videophones in the classrooms and residence halls. During MSD’s 150 years, Maryland governors, legislators, state Department of Education officials, MSD Board of Visitors, MSD

// E D U C AT I O N

Board of Trustees, MSD administration, faculty and staff, MSD alumni and MSD families and allies have made many contributions, collectively and individually, to improve MSD educational programs and services to all students residing in Maryland. In November, MSD held a gala to celebrate its 150-year anniversary at Springfield Manor Winery & Distillery in Thurmont. More than 230 people attended, and more than $8,000 was raised to for student scholarships. Today, MSD lives by its mission statement, to be “a diverse, bilingual community, in partnership with families, [that] provides an equitable and exemplary education in a nurturing, engaging, and challenging environment to ensure our students achieve personal excellence and become responsible lifelong learners.

NEW CLASSES HELP YOU dance your way to fitness BY GINA GALLUCCI-WHITE

Many people turn to fitness clubs and gyms for in maintaining a healthy weight However, there is another option out there for those who are looking for a different type of environment to reach their fitness goals. Area dance studios are offering a wide variety of fitness classes in a less competitive, community-based atmosphere. Fusion Fitness & Dance in Walkersville hosts morning and evening classes available as drop-ins or for monthly or 10-week sessions. The studio’s Strength Training class focuses on barbell and dumbbell lifting and targets major muscle groups. iSTOCKPHOTO.COM / KATE_SEPT2004

Co-owner Jennifer Ringer said it is a great class for those wanting to start working out again because you can pick your weight size and rest during reps if needed. “People really fall in love with (the class) and start to see the benefits of strength training,” she said. “When they start seeing it, they can’t help but keep coming back.” Fusion Fitness & Dance also offers R.I.P.P.E.D. (cardio and weights), BANG Power (funky power fitness), Zumba (high intensity interval training) and Strength/Core classes. Ringer believes dance studio fitness classes are a greater value for participants because the classes are smaller and allow for more individualized attention and guidance. “I think (a dance studio) is a place you can build confidence,” she said. “Our mission is building confidence, creativity and community. ...It’s always a really fun time. It’s not like you are lost in a big gym. You have the support of the instructor and the support of the community that is taking the classes.” Most dance studio students include a mix of parents whose children are enrolled as dancers as well as members of the community who just want a different fitness experience. Frederick’s 24/7 Dance Studio owner Gina Korrell says fitness classes help parents at the studio “feel like they are involved a little bit more in what is going on, especially if the class can be run simultaneously with their child’s class. It gives them something to look forward to and a little bit more of a personal connection to the studio – as opposed to just sitting in the lobby. I think it helps them to bond with other parents as well. Plus it is a no-brainer. If you are going to be there anyway, why not do something positive for yourself so you can walk out and feel great about it?” 24/7 provides BANG Power fitness classes incorporating hip-hop dancing, kickboxing and cardio.

34

thefrederickguide.com

“The instructors are super energetic, so they really pump you up,” Korrell said. They also offer Freedom Barre, which focuses on stretching and building strength. “Parents focus on everybody else first,” Korrell says. “Sometimes people don’t take time to take care of themselves and you have to take care of (yourself) and keep yourself in great shape to be able to take care of everybody else. Just that one hour a week of your time, to focus on yourself and your mental health as well as your physical well-being, you will increase your productivity and your overall life twofold. You need that personal time and everybody deserves that time for yourselves.” Korrell thinks people just need to move more and be active. “The world has gotten so stagnant,” she says. “If we want to be able to be around for a long time, we need to move. I think a dance studio is a very positive non-competitive place to do that.”

‘SENIOR MOMENTS’ can be exciting, educational BY CAROLYN B. TRUE, DIRECTOR, FREDERICK COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF AGING

Senior moments — we’ve all had them in some form. At the senior centers in Frederick County, senior moments are exciting and educational, and can help enhance the quality of life for our county’s older citizens. Frederick County is fortunate to have a variety of activities and programs for seniors sponsored by Frederick County government as well as educational institutions, and nonprofit and community organizations. iSTOCKPHOTO.COM /RAWPIXEL

The Frederick County Department of Aging, a department within the Citizens Services Division of Frederick County government, offers a wide range of programs and services for residents who are 55 and older. A host of exercise classes including chair yoga, Zumba, Tai Chi, drop-in Pickle ball, and strength training are all offered during the week. Fall prevention programs, computer classes, line dancing, day trips, cards and craft/art classes are also offered. During income tax season, volunteers help complete tax forms for eligible individuals. With the use of technology, the Department recently started a “virtual” senior center to bring programs to homebound individuals. Senior centers offer companionship, socialization and educational opportunities. They are also the gateway to other services for seniors and their families. There are five senior centers across Frederick County and depending on the one you visit, you may find an activity or interest that suits you. At these centers, you can also: • Receive assistance in completing government benefit applications. • Learn about available services to improve the quality of your life and help you age in place. • Obtain Medicare insurance counseling and information. • Attend a caregiver support group. A mid-day meal program is available, and the Friendship Café at the Frederick Senior Center offers an a la carte menu several times during the week. Other ways to keep busy in Frederick County include volunteering your time. Without volunteers in the Department of Aging programs, many services such as tax help and safe-driving courses could not be offered.

40

thefrederickguide.com

Meals on Wheels, a program that provides a hot and cold meal five days per week to homebound individuals, depends on volunteers to deliver meals. Volunteers also provide information and assistance during the Medicare Part D enrollment period, and they assist staff in the Ombudsman program and in the senior centers. Some people offer their talents and expertise by teaching a class about their favorite hobby. Not only does volunteering give a sense of satisfaction and of giving back to the community but the volunteer, in some cases, is also the eyes and ears of the Department and help to assure the well-being of individuals we serve. The tremendous growth of the senior population through the year 2030 will place precedent-setting demands on all human service agencies, not just on the Department of Aging. This will necessitate cooperation and collaboration to meet expanding needs in both the public and private sectors. However, given the spirit of community that Frederick County represents, this challenge can be met with creativity and unity.

+ For more information on services or volunteer opportunities, call the Department of Aging at 301-600-1605 or visit us at www.FrederickCountyMD.gov/aging

CONTINUE YOUR HEALTHY RESOLUTIONS With Transportation Alternatives BY KENDALL TIFFANY, COMMUNITY RELATIONS MANAGER, TRANSIT SERVICES OF FREDERICK COUNTY

Commuting long distances in your car alone can cause stress, take up valuable time, and be costly for your wallet. According to a study published by the Royal Society for Public Health in 2016, people who commute about an hour each way to work noted increases in stress, which also affects other parts of life, such as sleep and snacking. By using an alternative form of transportation, such as the MARC (Maryland Area Regional Commuter) train, commuter bus, or a vanpool instead of driving alone, you can stick with your resolutions and improve the following:

HAVE MORE TIME TO TACKLE DIFFERENT THINGS

iSTOCKPHOTO.COM / NICHOLASMcCOMBER

Imagine if you had an extra hour or two in your day to catch up on your favorite Netflix show, read a book, respond to emails or even take a short nap? By hopping on the train, bus, or in a carpool or vanpool, where someone else is doing the driving for an hour or two each day, you could tackle a variety of different things that promote your overall wellbeing. By using your commute time to tackle these things, then you’re also allowing more time to be present with family or friends while at home.

ADDED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY If using public transit is an option for your commute, but the stop is not next door to your home or office, incorporate physical activity to connect to each point. Walking to and from your transit stop is a great way to add exercise into your day. Or, you can ride your bike from home to your transit stop. All of TransIT’s buses are equipped with bike racks for easy transport to your connection location. Bikes can be secured at the Transit Center for the day while you’re at work. According to Active Living Research, “public transit users take 30 percent more steps each day than people who rely on cars.”

CHANGE OF SCENERY Many employers have a formal telework or flex scheduling policy that may allow for a change in scenery or adjusted work hours. This can help to improve your overall wellbeing weekly. By teleworking one day per week, you could save a few hours of your day that could otherwise be spent in a car to run errands, sleep an hour longer, or tackle chores at your house.

44

thefrederickguide.com

Flex scheduling (working different hours from the traditional 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule) can allow for a quicker commute by commuting in off-peak hours or allow for shorter hours at the end of the week. Find what works best for your commute and lifestyle for a better wellbeing in 2018.

AIN’T THEY GOT FUN? The Dapper DJs Expand with New DJ Training Program BY MOLLY FELLIN SPENCE

When Alex Sincevich was a kid, growing up in a small house on Downtown Frederick’s Market Street, there were always musical instruments lying around. “You’d trip over them,” he said with a chuckle. As the second oldest in a family with eight children, Sincevich always had at least one sibling to share music with, whether it was banging on some drums in the basement or spinning tunes on an old record player in the living room. These days, Sincevich is still spinning tunes with two of his brothers; they make up three-quarters of The Dapper DJs, a business founded by Alex in 2011. Jack and Sam Sincevich join their older brother as masters of ceremony and DJs for weddings and events throughout the Frederick and Washington, D.C., region. Their friend, Will Cole, is the current fourth member of the team. “We all have our own personalities; Jack is really keen on ’90s hip hop and ‘90s jams in general, Sam really loves blues and old soul. Will is ‘Mr. Showman,’ he sings and engages with the crowd big time, he really is up on Top 40 music as well,” Alex said. The Dapper DJs work hard to build relationships with their clients and to understand exactly what they want for their event. “Finding a DJ to mesh with the client is huge,” he said. The biggest part of understanding what clients want, Alex says, is listening to their vision for the event, then facilitate that vision. First, clients pick out their must-have songs, “then we move from that and figure out a set list that blends with what they want and that has floor-packing tunes. “We want to represent them well and pull off an experience that keeps everyone excited, entertained and dancing,” Alex said. Alex officially started The Dapper DJs as a side gig in 2011. His wife, Jen, suggested it, as she understood music was his true passion. At the time, he was commuting from Rockville to Frederick each day for his day job, and buying old record albums and Victrolas to use in small gigs in Downtown Frederick on weekends. 50

“I’d spin at businesses like Venus on Half Shell or Tiara Day, and the Downtown Frederick Partnership would hire us for First Saturday shows,” he said. “I enjoyed that street performing gig… Then people started asking us to do weddings.” Now, Sincevich has embarked on another entrepreneurial adventure he calls Monocacy Music Factory. The goal is to recruit, train and develop talent in the Frederick area to serve as “amazing” DJs and emcees. “The Dapper DJs were already training talent in-house over the past several years, grooming new team members to be the ultimate event and wedding professionals from the ground up,” Sincevich says on the Monocacy Music Factory website. “We’ve learned a lot and we saw an opportunity to expand our training and share our knowledge of what works with the community at large.” Monocacy Music Factory intends to offer regular seminars, oneon-one training sessions, apprenticeship opportunities and live event shadowing. “If you’ve got the gumption and the desire, we’ll give you the skills and opportunities to become successful in this exciting line of work,” the website states.

CELEBRATING MOUNT AIRY’S ‘FOUR CORNERS’ BY GINA GALLUCCI-WHITE

// F R E DE RI C K C O U N T Y TOW NS

In January, Harmony Autry and her mother, Melody Schell, took ownership of Firehouse Pottery & Arts on Mount Airy’s Main Street. During their first week in business, they said, a representative from every business located on the town’s Main Street stopped in to say hello, offer help and propose partnering to promote each other’s businesses. “You are not going to find that anywhere else,” Autry said. “(Mount Airy is) just a great place to be. It’s a wonderful place.”

iSTOCKPHOTO.COM / COAST-TO-COAST

Settled in 1830 and incorporated in 1894, Mount Airy is one of Maryland’s most unique towns because its borders encompass four counties: Frederick, Carroll, Montgomery and Howard. The FourCounty Area, as it is sometimes called, grew over the years thanks to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad train station at Parr’s Ridge. Visitors today will notice a nod to the city’s rail history with a retired 1920s red B&O caboose parked at the end of Main Street. The caboose also serves as a visitor’s center from noon to 5 p.m., each Saturday. Firehouse Pottery, which opened in 2005, is located about a block from the caboose. Autry decided to buy the business because she was looking to get back into art, which has been her passion for many years. The mother-daughter pair says they plan to offer more classes for children and adults at the shop, with beginner to advanced levels in a variety of media, such as watercolor, glass fusion and pottery. “I tried to bring a little of everything in the studio so everyone has something that they are interested in there to do,” Autry says. “...With

our place we want it to be like you leave the world behind you when you come into the door. We have a very open, family-oriented place. Everybody feels comfortable. There is no wrong answer. There is no right way to do things, no wrong way to do things. Families come in

and they spend time with (each other). There are no electronics. It’s actual conversation.” Aside from offering monthly events and birthday parties, Firehouse Pottery will continue to host summer camps for children with themes such as LEGO/Minecraft, Harry Potter, Fairy Garden and Sports. As of early February, Autry said several children had already signed up for summer camps. Another unique activity for residents and visitors of Mount Airy is Enter Exit Escape, an “escape room” experience where clues, puzzles and codes must be figured out to complete a mission within an hour timeframe. Co-owner Kristen Ellis first got the idea to create an escape room business in Mount Airy while her family was on vacation in North Carolina. Three generations were all actively involved and engaged to work together to solve the mission during an escape room game they played, and so she decided to bring the experience back to Mount Airy. Opened in August, Enter Exit Escape features three rooms with different themes, difficulty levels and number of people allowed to participate. Folks can chose from the Science Lab, where you must earn one last credit toward graduation, or Special Ops: Dirty Money, which involves trying to find enough evidence to send a criminal to jail, or Professor E’s Mummy Mystery, where plans change before you are set to go to Cairo for a archaeological dig. PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF FIREHOUSE POTTERY

64

thefrederickguide.com

Each scenario is created by staff members, and rooms will change themes from time to time. “We just try to think of things that will appeal to a broad range of folks that will have some kind of excitement as well,” Ellis said. For participants who get stuck and can’t quite solve all the puzzles in time, don’t worry. Each group is allowed three clues from the game master. And if you still don’t solve the room in time, the game master will review what you missed after time is up. “It’s a unique experience,” Ellis said. “It’s different from things that most people would do. A lot of times people go out and they are either doing food or some type of passive activity like a movie. With escape rooms, it is a little more active and engaging. Escape rooms are popping up all over for a reason. They are popular because they are engaging and exciting and interesting and challenging and fun, all at the same time. It is great for a girls’ night out or a couple’s date night. It really appeals to all these different sets.” The business chooses a nonprofit community partner every month and donates a portion of proceeds to that partner. “We are constantly trying to raise awareness of groups in our town, in our area, that are in need and we try to raise awareness and raise funds and have a positive impact on our local community,” Ellis said.

For Mount Airy children who need to get out some energy, Youth Play features a bevy of inflatables as well as a zip line, mega obstacle challenge and dual-lane slides. “Kids continue to come back,” says owner Wendy Rimbey. “We have enough inflatables in there we can rearrange and set up different stuff and the kids totally notice it when they come in. Their eyes light up. They get all excited.” Rimbey got the idea to open Youth Play in February 2017 because she often had to travel at least 30 minutes with her own family to find an inflatable business. The site also features sports activities, such as four baseball tunnels and a 3,600 square-foot field where soccer or lacrosse practices can occur. The business also hosts a number of birthday parties for those who like to jump into their new age. “It’s fun and energetic,” Rimbey said.

BRUNSWICK

RESOURCES:

The once-sleepy City of Brunswick, located along the Potomac River, with close proximity to the C&O Canal, Harper’s Ferry, Antietam, Leesburg and Charlestown, is now filled with a new air of excitement.

Elected Officials

SHOPS

MAYOR

Residents (about 6,000 currently), business owners and city officials are stepping up efforts to revive and reinvent their community. Seeking to redefine Brunswick as an attractive outdoor destination, they are working to fill empty downtown storefronts, opening new businesses and building trails for hiking and biking.

Jeff Snoots (term expires August 2020)

Antiques & Ole Stuff O 301-514-6220

With the city working on a new municipal building, a new music and events venue opening downtown, and the continuous expansion of Brunswick Crossing – a population-doubling housing development – Brunswick may finally be on track to change its fortune from the 1950s, when the railroad pulled out of the city abruptly..

Veterans Day Parade Brunswick’s Veterans Day Parade is one of the oldest in the country. It began in 1932, six years before Veterans Day became recognized as a national holiday. Brunswick is one of only two Veterans Day sites in Maryland to be officially sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which allows official military groups — such as the Armed Forces Color Guard of Washington, D.C. — to participate. This year, the event is set for Nov. 5.

BURKITTSVILLE Burkittsville is a virtually unchanged example of an American townscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the town was a service center for the rural area around it. Today, Main Street’s buildings are still bordered by fields of crops and dairy farms, although there are no longer any commercial establishments in the town. Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War when forces of the Union and Confederate armies engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam.

EMMITSBURG Emmitsburg, a quiet town nestled at the foot of the mountains, offers peace and tranquility. Incorporated in the early 1800s, Emmitsburg was the home of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. She established the first Catholic school in the U.S., that grew into St. Joseph’s College. The property is now home to the National Fire Academy and Homeland Security. A short drive away is Mount Saint Mary’s University. In Emmitsburg you can relax but still be within driving distance to major cities such as Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Harrisburg. You are just a few miles from the Gettysburg Battlefield, Ski Liberty Resort and numerous golf courses.

MIDDLETOWN Middletown is a small, rural community steeped in American history. It is located in the beautiful Middletown Valley that stretches between the Catoctin Mountains on the east and South Mountain on the west. A young Lt. George Washington, while surveying the South Mountain area, reported that the valley to the east was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Middletown continues to evolve from a settlement of farmers and ranchers to one of tradesmen, craftsmen, businessmen, clergymen, commuters and retired folk—without losing its agricultural roots. From the stately old Victorian-style homes and soaring church steeples to the rustic dairy farms and modern housing developments, residents find in Middletown a refuge where they can enjoy small-town life as it used to be.

URBANA Nestled in the southeastern section of the county near major arteries such as Interstate 270 and Md. Routes 355 and 80, Urbana has become a haven for Montgomery County residents looking to move north and Frederick or Pennsylvania folks aiming to be closer to Washington, D.C., yet still live in a quiet, country setting. Villages of Urbana and Urbana Highlands subdivisions comprise the largest communities. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, the Urbana region has more than 9,000 residents, and that number is still climbing.

WALKERSVILLE Walkersville is a combination of two villages that were settled by German immigrants in the mid 1700s and early 1800s. By the late 1800s, the villages of Georgetown and Walkersville had grown so intertwined that it made sense to combine them into one entity, which was named Walkersville. Today, Walkersville aggressively pursues fiscal responsibility, recycling projects, and innovation. In 1995, it was credited with having the first State Police bicycle patrol in the nation. There are four schools, residential developments, a shopping center, several businesses and institutions, and numerous restaurants in the town. Walkersville has managed a rapid population growth wisely, enabling it to maintain a friendly, small-town atmosphere.

WOODSBORO Early history suggests that the Woodsboro area was a hunting and trapping ground for a wandering tribe of Susquehanna Indians. From early times, the settlement was located at a crossroads on the Indian trail running from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains. When the stagecoach became the primary mode of transportation, the place became an important stop on its itinerary. Today, Woodsboro is still primarily an agricultural area, but an important industry is centered on the three lime quarries that border the town.
