It’s summertime in Frederick County, Maryland, and things are really heating up, literally and figuratively, around the county! There’s no shortage of interesting, fun and exciting activities happening in and around Frederick in July, August and September. So, tell the kids they can’t complain about being bored, because that would be impossible. Our region is known for its historical importance; Civil War-era sites abound, and there’s lots of hidden history all around us. Why not explore this rich history by water? Few things are more relaxing on a warm summer day than paddling down the river and catching some cool breezes. On Page 16, Emily Huebner, Assistant Director of the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area, has some suggestions for routes to take on the Monocacy or Potomac rivers to float through Frederick history. We’re fortunate to have an excellent public library system in Frederick County, and some unique programs have begun in the last few months that any library cardholder can take advantage of – the Summer Reading Challenge available at all Frederick County Public Libraries branches (see more on Page 28) and a Fishing Equipment Loaner Program based in the Brunswick Branch Library (get the info on Page 12). Kids and teenagers can take advantage of another special summer program, offered by TransIT Services of Frederick County. Every summer, TransIT offers a Summer Freedom Pass for students ages 13 to 22 for $15. The pass allows students to use TransIT’s Connector and shuttle services to visit friends, go shopping, get part-time jobs and more in and around Frederick. And, new this year, a Summer Kid Pass for those ages 4 to 12 will also be available. Get all the details on Page 44. As the weather warms and the days get longer, you may be seeking opportunities to exercise outdoors, and you’re in luck. Frederick is home to many unique outdoor exercise options. From cycling to boot camps to yoga, check out all the ways to get fit outdoors in Frederick, starting on Page 50. No matter what you choose to do with your summer, you’ll find ideas, tips and resources inside this edition of Frederick County Guide. So get out there, Frederick, and enjoy this bright, sunny season in our amazing county!

COMMUNITY \\

BRUNSWICK LIBRARY OFFERS Fishing Equipment Loaner Program Frederick County Public Libraries now offers library cardholders the opportunity to borrow fishing equipment. Six equipped fishing rods are available for loan at the Brunswick branch of Frederick County Public Libraries, at 915 N. Maple Ave., in Brunswick. Library cardholders may borrow two rods at a time for up to three weeks. Fishing rods will be available for check out on a first come, first served basis and may not be returned in the book drop, left outside the library, or returned to other library locations. This program is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, who provided the equipment. Additionally, Brunswick Sports & Apparel will support the program and service the fishing rods.

You can use these rods anywhere you would normally go fishing. Fishing licenses are required in the State of Maryland for anyone older than 16, and getting a fishing license is the responsibility of the person who is borrowing or using the rod. The library doesn’t offer licenses.

We asked Brunswick Branch Administrator Tara Lebherz about the new program, announced in April, and she answered a few frequently asked questions.

When did this program begin, and what was the impetus for it? We started the program in early April of this year. The program is an initiative started by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources; they piloted a similar program in Anne Arundel County in 2017. It was so successful they decided to roll it out to more areas in the state.

How exactly does the fishing rod loaning program work?

Library cardholders can check out up to two fishing rods per library card for a three-week checkout period. Fines are the same as other materials in our system —it’s 25 cents per day for rods that are returned late. There’s a $10 fee if a rod is lost or not returned. The rods have to be picked up and dropped off at the Brunswick library.

12

We have a total of six fully equipped fishing rods that can be checked out from the Brunswick branch. Each rod comes with a small container that contains an extra hook, sinker and bobber.

iSTOCKPHOTO.COM / BRAUNS

// C O M M U N I T Y

What has been the response from the community so far? The rods have been checked out from the very first week we got them in! We weren’t sure how frequently the collection would be used (although we were hopeful), and we have been pleasantly surprised by their reception. Since their initial checkout, every single rod has been in demand. We keep a waiting list for anyone who wants to get one when they’re returned. All the comments we’ve received so far have been positive—people have expressed surprise and delight at the fact that we have such an unusual collection!

Why is the Brunswick library a good place for a fishing rod loaning program? We lobbied to have this program in Brunswick for a couple reasons —we want to make our library an interesting spot to visit so that our community stops in to see what we have to offer. Additionally, we’re only minutes away from access points to the Potomac River and the C&O Canal and close to Brunswick Community Pond inside Lions Club Merryland Park.

The program will probably not expand to other FCPL branches, although the rods can be checked out to anyone with an FCPL library card. This is a special opportunity for a unique collection in the Brunswick branch and we’re pleased to be able to share it with our community and with Frederick County as a whole.

What about the financial aspects of the program? The program is free — all the materials were provided to our system from the Department of Natural Resources. The rods, tackle and boxes are from the department, and they’re willing to replace all of them if they’re lost or broken. We’ve partnered with Brunswick Sports & Apparel, located at 302 W. Potomac Street in Brunswick, who helps us by servicing the fishing rods after they’re used. They also sell fishing licenses.

+ Find out more The Brunswick branch of Frederick County Public Libraries is located at 915 N. Maple Ave., in Brunswick. It is open at 10 a.m. every day except Sunday. On Mondays through Thursdays, the branch closes at 8 p.m.; on Fridays and Saturdays, it closes at 5 p.m. Call 301-600-7250 or go online: fcpl.org

HIS TORY \ \

FLOAT THROUGH HISTORY in Frederick BY EMILY HUEBNER, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF THE HEART OF THE CIVIL WAR HERITAGE AREA

With warmer weather in Frederick, there’s nothing more relaxing and fun than getting on the water. Solo or with friends; kayak, canoe, or anything else you can paddle; spending a day on the river is sure to get you in a good mood. Follow these two trips, suggested by a Frederick native, to get you out there!

Monocacy River (Riverside Park to Pinecliff Park) Start at Riverside Park (1801 Monocacy Boulevard, Frederick) and float downstream a little more than 6 miles to Pinecliff Park (8350 Pinecliff Park Road, Frederick). Pinecliff Park is just upstream from Monocacy National Battlefield (nps. gov/mono). If you’re feeling adventurous, continue to Gambrill Mill. On your left is the spot where Union troops commanded by Lew Wallace (who later wrote “Ben Hur”) held off a Confederate advance on the right bank. Although ultimately the Union was forced to cede the ground, they had delayed Jubal Early’s Confederates long enough that Washington, D.C., was prepared to fend off the Confederate advance. Before you head home, stop at the battlefield’s visitor center to learn about the men who splashed across the same river more than 150 years ago during “the Battle that Saved Washington, D.C.”

Potomac River (Brunswick to Point of Rocks) Remember the centuries of people who paddled, fished and hunted on the Potomac River with this trip. Start in the historic City of Brunswick, getting on the river at the Brunswick Boat Ramp, near the remains of the C&O Canal’s Lock 30 (canaltrust.org/pyv/remains-of-lock-30). Float downstream about 6 miles to the Point of Rocks Boat Ramp. Near the end of the trip you’ll get a glimpse of Heater’s Island, where a settlement of the Piscataway people lived in 1699. That year, according to representatives of Virginia’s governor, there were about 300 people living on the island. Today, the Piscataway people are the only indigenous group recognized by the State of Maryland. This includes the Piscataway-Conoy Confederacy, the Piscataway Indian Nation and the Cedarville Band of Piscataway.

On your way home from the river, stop by Rocky Point Creamery (rockypointcreamery.com) and cool off with some ice cream or head back to Brunswick to rub elbows with the cyclists and hikers of the C&O Canal with a meal at Beans in the Belfry (beansinthebelfry.com) and check out Smoketown Brewing Station (smoketownbrewing.com), located in the city’s former firehouse, where the beers are inspired by local history.

KEEPING BUYERS AND SELLERS SAFE during Real Estate Settlements

BY KAREN HIGHLAND, COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR, FREDERICK COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® AND MEG GAWLER, LAKESIDE TITLE

Cyber Security for Home Buyers and Sellers With an increase in technology comes new risks. It’s true in every industry, including real estate. Cyber security and safety relating to real estate has become a top priority for the industry. The FBI states that as of May 2017, e-mail scams have grown to be a $5.3-billion issue affecting consumers and businesses.

How Real Estate Cyber Fraud Works

iSTOCKPHOTO.COM /MAWARDIBAHAR

The most notable threats to the real estate industry today are wire scams, e-mail hacking and mobile device security issues. Hackers have learned how to compromise data and gain entry into the email accounts of buyers, sellers, Realtors®, lenders and title companies, helping themselves to millions of dollars each year in the United States. All associated parties can be at risk, if they are not careful.

The hacker gains entry into the e-mail account of the buyer, then presents themselves as the title company handling the upcoming closing. The hackers will use an e-mail address that looks deceptively like that of the title professional whom the buyer has been communicating with during the weeks leading up to their closing. The hacker will then provide wiring instructions to their own account, rather than the actual settlement firm. The buyer then goes to their bank to initiate the wire, believing that they are following proper settlement protocol and doing all that is needed for a timely settlement. Unfortunately, in most cases, once that wire button is pressed the funds are gone and no longer able to be retracted. Tragically, the money is wired to an untraceable account.

20

thefrederickguide.com

iSTOCKPHOTO.COM / ANIKEI

Buyers now need to be aware of these scams. They need to understand the importance of taking the time to protect themselves and their money. This can be accomplished by being diligent in verifying all wiring instructions multiple times by phone, before sending funds. Additionally, buyers can protect themselves by protecting their mobile devices, which the FBI has noted as one of the top ways hackers gain fraudulent entry into email accounts.

// R E A L E S TAT E

Consumers should use scrutiny and caution when downloading apps, checking the permissions before authorizing, and staying current on security updates. Unfortunately, hackers will get more effective as time marches on. Growing technology will only allow hackers and those that wish to prey upon consumers more opportunities to harm and steal. Buyers, sellers and Realtors® should take a proactive approach in following security measures to stay safe during the course of their real estate transaction.

The Best Safety Advice: Use A Realtor® Realtors® bring with them a team of real estate professionals to serve their buyers and sellers at the highest level, including their safety. “We want the public to keep in mind,” explains FCAR President Greg Phillips, with RE/MAX Results in Frederick, “one of the primary differences between a Realtor® and non-Realtor® licensed agent is that Realtors® are held to a strict code of ethics set forth

by the National Association of Realtors®. Also, Maryland is one of a few states that has its own code of ethics, so Maryland Realtors® are also held to the state level code of ethics.” For the most part selling your home is a safe activity, with many professionals on the alert for those who may have bad intentions. At the same time, by taking some extra precautions on your own you can ensure you leave no gaps where someone meaning to do harm can take advantage.

+ Frederick County Association of Realtors® is the Frederick County Maryland professional association serving over 1,100 members and is dedicated to preserving the vitality of the real estate market. REALTORS® is a registered collective membership mark which may only be used by those real estate professionals who subscribe to the REALTORS® organization’s strict Code of Ethics, and who are members of the National, State and Local REALTORS® organization.

FREDERICK OFFERS Small Business Assistance Program The Grow Conditional Micro Grant program is one of the small business tools that the City of Frederick offers to small businesses locating or expanding within the city. It is intended to provide sustainable business development in the city. According to the city’s office of economic development, helping innovative, small and start-up businesses grow strong, deep roots in Frederick will help create the jobs and tax base of the future. The Grow Conditional Micro Grant helps start-ups and small businesses with matching grants and is designed for Frederick’s targeted industries. Funding for catalytic projects can also be considered under this program. The intent is to make start-up costs lower or help with the expansion costs that a small business faces as it opens and grows. This will, in turn, improve building capacity for the use of targeted industries, and increase employment opportunities in Frederick. Recipients of the Grow Conditional Micro Grant will: 1) Be assigned project contacts through The City of Frederick to assist with questions, 2) Receive customized follow-up from the city’s Department of Economic Development 3) Receive access to promotional opportunities. Applications will be reviewed against a scoring system to determine which businesses will be funded. This program provides matching financial assistance for small businesses, incubator clients, and businesses in targeted industries on a rolling basis, subject to funding availability. Program participants receive a 50/50 matching investment up to a maximum of $5,000 per project and per applicant (minimum $1,000 requested match). For example, an investment of $5,000 requires a total project expense of $10,000. Graduates of the Frederick Innovative Technology Center, Inc. (FITCI) are eligible to receive a matching grant up to a maximum of $10,000 and require a total project expense of $20,000. The grant does not have to be repaid.

24

thefrederickguide.com

The program funds improvements to the property occupied by a small business or workforce training for employees. Eligible expenses for property improvements include business fit-out, demo, signage, paint, updates to electrical or plumbing systems, life/safety updates, ADA compliance, or other improvements that convey with or improve the property. For workforce training, businesses must certify that at least 30 percent of the workforce is comprised of city residents in order to request funding. Grow Conditional Micro Grants are provided after remodeling work is completed and all expenses are paid. Residential property, residential components of mixed-use buildings, retail, or restaurant businesses are not eligible for the program unless they meet criteria as a catalyst project. Costs are not reimbursed until the space is open and occupied by a business tenant. Workforce training costs are reimbursed once expenses are paid. Applicants must first meet with Department of Economic Development staff in a formal meeting to discuss needs. Eligible applicants include small business owners within the City of Frederick with fewer than 25 full-time employees: • In the industries of advanced technology, manufacturing, life sciences, and information technology; or • The business location would provide a catalytic effect on the area immediately surrounding the business; and • Applicants from FITCI must be current FITCI clients to be eligible for a matching investment in excess of $5,000.

Kids and adults can earn prizes through SUMMER READING CHALLENGE Frederick County Public Libraries (FCPL) launched its annual summer reading challenge in May, and will continue through the summer with events, programs and activities for all readers, from young children through adults. This year’s theme is “Radio Frederick,” and as part of the challenge, FCPL will host a summer-long concert series featuring live music at libraries across the county. One of the most anticipated events during the Radio Frederick concert series is scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, July 21. Awardwinning musician Laurie Berkner will play a free concert at the Weinberg Center for the Arts, 20 W. Patrick St., Frederick. Tickets for the event will be available starting June 21, with a limit of four tickets per person. In addition, the first 50 people to reserve a copy of Berkner’s new book “Monster Boogie” at the Curious Iguana, 12 N. Market St., Frederick, will get entrance to an exclusive meet-and-greet event with the author/singer after her performance. According to FCPL, the annual summer challenge is especially designed for school-aged children, as it helps kids to avoid the “summer slide,” when students tend to lose some of the academic achievements they gained during the school year. Studies show that children who engage in reading and learning over the summer are more likely to return to school at grade level in the fall, according to FCPL.

Track your reading progress with Beanstack (fcpl.beanstack. org/reader365), an online portal that provides personal book recommendations and Summer Challenge activities.

26

thefrederickguide.com

In addition to the reading lists and resources on the FCPL Summer Reading Challenge website, the Frederick County Public Schools website also lists a number of resources for children of all ages to enhance their summer reading activities. Go to fcps.org/academics/summer-reading to find the lists and other information.

Teens and adults are also eligible to participate in the challenge. All age levels can earn prizes when they register online and log books read during the summer.

Earn points by reading books or by using your game board and completing activities. Locations throughout Frederick County are listed online as Summer Reading Challenge destination sites. Find the sign at each destination and enter the code on the Summer Reading Challenge website to earn 50 points toward your goal.

INFANTS AND TODDLERS PROGRAM provides early

intervention for developmental needs BY GINA GALLUCCI-WHITE

When parents, day-care providers or doctors notice that an infant or a toddler is behind on certain milestones, such as crawling, walking or talking, the next step for families is to contact the Frederick County Health Department’s Infant and Toddlers program, which provides free early intervention services to support children with potential developmental needs. Staff will start by getting some general information about the child and one of four area service coordinators will call back to schedule an in-home appointment with two staff members to evaluate and determine eligibility. A child can be up to 3 years old, must live in Frederick County and meet one of the criteria: 25 percent delay or more in any development area; developing in a way atypical from other children their age; and/or a diagnosed condition that may affect them developmentally. If a child qualifies for a program, staff comes back to discuss the program, set up weekly appointments and talk about ways the family may integrate helping their child to reach their goals through slight alterations to their schedules. Incorporating the family into the child’s progress is a recent national shift in early childhood intervention, according to Lisa Jarboe, Frederick County’s Infants and Toddlers program manager. Providers are finding the more support and focus they can provide for the family in terms of social, emotional concerns or needs, the more likely the child’s development will be supported at home. Jarboe has a speech therapy background and has been with the county for 20 years. When she met with families, she used to bring a toy bag with her to work with the children and take it back with her at the end of the appointment. “The parent was looking at the provider as the professional to get their child to do something but they didn’t feel confident in being able to get their child to do that same thing when the provider was gone,” she says. “The idea behind (additional family involvement) is to build the family or caregiver’s capacity in helping their child during their daily routines every day. They are the professionals of their child. They are the ones with their child on a daily basis not us so we don’t take toy bags into homes anymore. We look at the routines of the child and family and where they need the most support.” The program uses reflective coaching to give parents and caregivers the opportunity to think how they can make adjustments that will lead to progress. While not a medical model, providers have different backgrounds and disciplines focused on being early interventionists. Jarboe says there is no specific target skill level they want children to achieve.“What we want to do is make sure developmentally they are

34

thefrederickguide.com

on track but also that the family’s and child’s needs are being met,” she said. “They are being supported.” They aim to have children on a path to be developmentally ready to learn when they start attending school through the context of three childhood outcome areas: social, emotional needs, acquiring use of knowledge and skills and their ability to use appropriate behavior to meet their needs and gain independence. From July 1, 2017 to early May, the program had 735 referrals. Overall, Jarboe notes, the program has been seeing a steady incline in referrals and rate of children qualifying. Developmental delays include in the areas of motor, communication, adaptive skill, social and emotional areas. Some children are referred due to prematurity, exposure to substances in utero or diagnoses such as autism, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome. When there is a suspected delay with a child, some parents turn to friends and family for opinions or ask for advice on social media. Some are told, “It’s just a phase” or “They will grow out of it.” “When I see that (type of thinking) I think ‘just give us a call.’ We are a service that comes out for any concern at all,” Jarboe says. “It doesn’t hurt to have somebody come out to you to have the evaluation. Early intervention is so important to give a child the advantage early on, give the family support they need in order to advocate for their child and help their child’s development prior to entering school. This really gives them an advantage of being a part of a program that is of no cost to them that really helps improve their development in all areas and how successful they are in those three child outcomes.” Jarboe will run into families every so often that she provided aide to when the children were younger and gets to hear about what they are doing now and how they are functioning in school. “It is such a great feeling to know that we were there in the beginning to help support that child and give that family support and guidance to feel comfortable to advocate for their child as they get older and go through school,” she said.

HEARTFIELDS VOLUNTEER shares love of art with seniors BY GINA GALLUCCI-WHITE

Elaine Luttrell was fairly new to the Frederick community when she saw a list of volunteer job opportunities in the local newspaper. One was from HeartFields Assisted Living at Frederick, asking for someone to lead art classes. “I just called up and said ‘Well, I’d like to try it,’” she recalls. “I had not (taught art) before, but here I am 10 years later and still doing it. I love it.” Once per week, Luttrell leads small groups of residents in acrylic paintings that take several weeks to complete. She has a picture file filled with a variety of old calendar photos with water scenes, landscapes and flowers that she has collected over the years for inspiration. “I like people to paint what they like to paint,” she says. “... It becomes clear pretty soon what people really like because they gravitate toward that type of photo or picture to paint from.” Luttrell has experience with but does not have a formal art degree. She recalls taking Saturday morning oil painting classes as a child and has created in different media ever since. For the last decade, she has worked with clay, creating sculptures of people. HeartFields provides assistance for those in need of memory care, respite care and short-term stays. The painting class is available to everyone. “I’ve had people who have painted their whole lives,” Luttrell says. “I’ve had people come who don’t need any instruction. They teach me. They just need the opportunity to have supplies there and everything there they can work with. Then it’s really fun, too, because I’ve had people that have never picked up a paintbrush in their life and they are like ‘Oh my goodness! I can do this! I can do something new!’ Anybody is welcome. All levels.” After each resident has finished his or her work, Luttrell will get each piece framed. Many of her students now have mini art galleries in their rooms. Some give the paintings as gifts.

Raymond Michael works on his painting of Saylor’s Hardware Store in

“It’s always fun to give an artist their finished work and it’s all framed and they look at it and just go, in their own words, and say ‘Wow. I did that.’ That’s just cool,” she says.

interesting people to meet there. … I have so many friends now at HeartFields. That’s really an exciting part of it.”

Her goal is for residents to have fun and to be happy with their finished painting. “I just really love to share art with other people who are excited about (the subject),” Luttrell says. “There are just so many fun,

Some studies have shown that art can be beneficial to seniors. “I think all artists just like to be challenged to learn something new,” Luttrell says. “To me, you never perfect art. There is always something new to learn, which I think is fun. ...At the end (of creating a painting), there is an accomplishment.”

Katherine Davis (top left) and John Caffrey work on paintings during a class taught by volunteer Elaine Luttrell. Davis’ finished work called “Flowers” is at left, and Caffrey’s work “Mountains” is at right. The middle image, “Barns” is by artist Raymond Michael.

Luttrell, who also volunteers at the Literacy Council of Frederick County, loves giving her time to the senior care facility and has some advice for others who may be contemplating giving their time: “If you have a love or a passion for a hobby or something that you like to do, it’s a great place to find other friends to share that with.” According to HeartFields Executive Director Anita Evans, Luttrell is one of about a dozen volunteers who work with seniors. “Some feed residents, some read to residents, some play Bingo, some do crafts, some teach painting, and some teach Bible study and hold Sunday services,” she said. More volunteers are always needed; anyone who would enjoy reading, painting nails, playing the piano or singing, or just visiting with residents is welcome.

“We would be grateful to have more volunteers,” Evans said. “We depend, appreciate and need them. Our community would not be the same without them.” Evans said volunteers give so much to the residents without getting anything back in return. They bring in a “fresh outside air” to the facility, and residents “feel important and loved when someone is willing to do that without getting paid for it.”

SUMMER BUS PASSES for Students and Kids Now Available

BY KENDALL TIFFANY, COMMUNITY RELATIONS MANAGER, TRANSIT SERVICES OF FREDERICK COUNTY

Every summer, TransIT offers a Summer Freedom Pass for students ages 13 to 22 for $15. The pass allows students to use TransIT’s Connector and shuttle services to visit friends, go shopping, get part-time jobs and more in and around Frederick. Beginning in 2018, TransIT will also pilot a Summer Kid Pass for Frederick children ages 4 to 12. Both passes will be eligible on TransIT’s public transit service beginning June 1 and will be valid through Aug. 31. For more information on each specific pass and where to obtain them, see below.

Summer Student Pass (ages 13-22) Also commonly known as the Summer Freedom Pass, the Summer Student Pass is a $15 pass for unlimited rides on all TransIT shuttles and Connectors from June 1 through Aug. 31. Students must have a student ID when boarding the bus and when purchasing the pass. Summer Student Passes can be purchased on TransIT ezFARE, the mobile ticketing app, by mail, or at the following locations: • TransIT ezFARE (TransIT’s mobile ticketing app) • TransIT Office, 1040 Rocky Springs Road, Frederick (8 a.m.-5p.m., Monday-Friday) • Frederick County Treasurer’s Office, 30 N. Market St., Frederick (8 a.m.-4p.m., Monday-Friday)

Summer Kid Pass (ages 4-12) This pass is new in 2018 and is free for children 12 years of age and younger. Children who obtain a Summer Kid Pass will receive free unlimited rides on all TransIT shuttles and Connectors when accompanied by an adult from June 1 through Aug. 31. Free fare is not eligible without a physical pass. Children ages 10 to 12 should show proof of age with a student ID. The Summer Kid Pass can be obtained at the following locations: • TransIT Office, 1040 Rocky Springs Road, Frederick (8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday) • Frederick County Treasurer’s Office, 30 N. How do I ride the bus? 1. Determine which route services the area in which you want to travel. For example, if you are planning a trip to Frederick Community College, consult the #60 or #61/FCC Connector route brochures. Google TransIT (the google maps app on your smart phone) is an online mapping system that can also be used. Determine when you would like to arrive at your destination and look at the bus arrival times to determine which best suits your needs. 2. Determine where and when you will need to catch the bus in order to arrive at your destination at the desired time. Plan to arrive at the bus stop 5 minutes early. It may be necessary for you to transfer if the bus that serves your destination does not serve the area in which you plan to board the bus. If so, consult the route brochure for the route that serves the area in which you want to board the bus, and find the transfer point between the two routes. For example, if you want to board the bus at FSK Mall to travel to FCC, you will have to transfer from the #20/FSK Mall Connector to the #60 or #61/FCC Connector at the Transit Center in Downtown Frederick. 3. Pay your fare. Cash is accepted on board for single trips as well as tickets. Monthly passes, multi-trip passes, and youth/ student tickets may be purchased. If you are using a credit card, you can use TransIT EZFare, the mobile ticketing app, to purchase tickets (including the one-day pass) from your smart phone. Simply download the app (available for iOS & Android devices), enter your information, purchase a ticket, activate it and show the driver.

FIT AND HISTORIC: Best Outdoor Exercise Classes in Frederick BY MELISSA JOSEPH MUNTZ

It’s no secret that Downtown Frederick is full of beautiful historic architecture and a variety of unique outdoor spaces. What you might not know is that there are lots of opportunities to get your heart rate up while you enjoy the sights and sounds. Whether you are a serious athlete or a just looking for a fun experience, you’ll love Frederick’s fit and historic classes. Working out has never been so fun!

Cyclefit at Sky Stage Venue: Sky Stage, at 59 S. Carroll St., Frederick, transformed a boarded property in the heart of Frederick’s downtown historic district into an interactive building-scale public artwork. This pre-Revolutionary War building was damaged by a major fire in 2010 and has no roof. Now, the plywood boards on the doors and windows have been removed to reveal a center for arts and culture. The open-air theater offers drama, music, children’s story time, art classes, folklore, history, naturalists, and film. The local community is invited to program the space. Workout: Barre/HIIT Workout with CycleFit. This free class is a combination of two popular fitness methods, the barre workout and high-intensity interval training, with music accompaniment. Length: 50 minutes Dates: Second Tuesdays of the month More info: http://cyclefitfrederick.com/schedule/weekly-schedule

Boot Camp on the Creek Venue: Similar in style to the famous Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas, Carroll Creek Park began as a flood control project in the late 1970s. After the Great Frederick Flood of 1976 left parts of Downtown Frederick under 3 feet of water, it was obvious a solution was needed to remove Frederick from the 100-year flood plain. A 40-foot-wide, 1.3-mile channel waterway with brick pedestrian paths, water features, pedestrian bridges, landscaping, fountains and a 350-seat-amphitheater has restored vitality to the historic commercial district and continues to be a catalyst for economic growth. Workout: Led by local personal trainer Caryn Dayhoff, this outdoor full body workout will make you sweat. Length: 45 minutes Dates: Third Fridays of the month More info: facebook.com/Caryndayhoff.fitness/

Workout: Donation-based yoga class for all levels Length: 1 hour Dates: 6:30-7:30 p.m., Every Tuesday More info: yogamour.org

Frederick Steeplechasers Group Runs Venue: Runs start at various locations throughout Frederick, depending on the day. The route may take you through Baker Park or onto the downtown streets. Workout: Runs normally go for 3-4 miles with short-cut options to accommodate all ability levels. From these runs, special training groups form throughout the year for anything from 5K to marathon-level training. The group sets the pace, so don’t be afraid of not keeping up.

Length: 3-4 miles Dates: Varied More info: facebook.com/FrederickSteeplechasersRunningClub/

We will be smack dab in the middle of the harvest season, the busiest time of year at a winery. Equipment will be getting prepped, and we will be carefully monitoring each varietal to see when the ideal time will be to pick them off of the vine. Tours will be conducted, educating guests how we process the fruit, showing them our wine making equipment, and providing them with a basic idea of how we harvest at Catoctin Breeze. Live music by Justin B. and BricknFire Pizza will be serving pizzas on-site.

For more than 30 years, In The Street has been a proud Frederick tradition held along Market Street and Carroll Creek Urban Park. The festival began in 1983 after major renovations closed Market Street for several months. When the dust settled Mayor Ron Young decided to hold a festival for the entire community to encourage reinvestment in downtown. The festival was held in the street, so the naming of the event was simple. In The Street continues to invite attendees to explore historic downtown Frederick, while offering a sampling of the diverse food, entertainment, art and nonprofit resources that thrive in Frederick County.

Follow Route 26 past the fork in the road and over the bridge at the Monocacy River, and you’ll find the small town that’s home to big agricultural history. Walkersville has a rich farm history with many family farms having been handed down through multiple generations. It’s common to see corn growing on multiple acres or cattle or horses moseying around pastures. Walkersville is comprised of just more than 4 miles, and its founding dates back to the late 1800s. Walkersville was initially made up of two separate villages known as Georgetown on Pennsylvania Avenue and Walkersville on Frederick Street. When the Frederick and Pennsylvania Railroad arrived in 1872, the area prospered. The Town of Walkersville was incorporated in 1892. The town still celebrates its railroad history via the popular Walkersville Southern Railroad (WSRR). Between May and October, regular 70-minute train rides are held on Saturdays and Sundays. A number of popular special event train rides, such as Bunny Trains around Easter, Santa Trains near Christnas and four-course dinner trains are scheduled during the operating season as well.

New this year to the WSRR are “autism-friendly” train rides on June 30, July 28 and Aug 30. Closed to the general public, these excursions will be for people with autism and their family members and/or caregivers to enjoy. “I try to add a little something different every year,” says Brooke Kovalcik, director of special events and general administrator at WSRR. In 2017, the Super Hero Picnic was a big hit with children, who were asked to come dressed as their favorite comic book characters. These special rides, which will continue this summer as well, include a bring-your-own-lunch picnic and storytime at Walkersville Community Park. This year, Super Hero Picnic rides are set for July 11, July 25, Aug. 8 and Aug. 22. Kovalcik notes last year was the WSRR’s best ever, with just more than 18,000 riders taking a trip. That’s up by 3,000 riders from previous years. “It was so nice to see we are increasing our ridership,” she says. This year has started strong as well with dinner trains and mystery trains selling out as well.

“Our reservations, in general, have been coming in nonstop,” she said. The WSRR is run by a nearly all-volunteer staff who service the track, restore abandoned rail cars and help run regular and special excursions. Some staff members are not even local residents; they drive in from Virginia and Delaware in order to give their time. “We have such a devoted group of people that come out,” Kovalcik says. One of the best reviews of the railroad Kovalcik recalls hearing from a rider is that “It’s like stepping away from the rush of life where you can have a seat and put your phone away.” Kovalcik says the excursions provide a lasting memory where you can see the countryside and experience a good, old-fashioned time on the railroad. “It’s a very rewarding place to be,” she says.

Peaceful park is home to dozens of animal species Along the route of the WSRR is Walkersville’s Fountain Rock Park and Nature Center, operated by Frederick County Parks and Recreation. Located on 22.5 acres, the park features the remains of an industrial limestone quarry and kiln, first developed in the PHOTOGRAPHS BY SPENCE PHOTOGRAPHICS

1850s to 1860s as well as an active nature center, with native and non-native reptiles and amphibians on view to the public. “We are a little biased; we just love it here,” says park naturalist Kelly Ketzenberger. “It is a great atmosphere. You have four or five different habitats. We have fields, we have forests, we have water, wetlands in the quarry, all of that. There is a lot to see in this small area. It’s a very peaceful park.” The nature center hosts a number of programs for a wide range of residents from young children to adults, such as a nature academy, junior naturalist program, family campfire and bird walks. “Every age is interested (in nature),” she says. “They all have different pieces that they like to get into.” The nature center is home to an impressive array of reptiles and amphibians to see up close including two bearded dragons, six turtle species, tarantulas, toads, frogs, Madagascar hissing cockroaches, geckos and Vietnamese walking sticks. Staff members keep track via flip tags on cages each time they bring out a creature, so they do not stress them out with too much activity.

Ketzenberger notes that some people grow up being afraid of spiders or snakes, but by educating children and adults and providing that hands-on experience, they don’t have to live in fear. The animals serve as ambassadors to the community.

“Moving into a larger space allowed us to … increase our collection … and to have a separate programming room so that we were not doing programming and people trying to study and work all in the same place.”

A favorite pastime among visitors is to visit the 2-acre quarry pond just beside the nature center. During warm months, visitors may feed the turtles (there are about 50 total living in the pond) with park-approved food from dispensers for a small fee.

Bowers said she has heard lots of positive feedback regarding the many amenities the branch offers, since opening in March. Now located on South Glade Road, the library offers study rooms and an early literacy play-and-learn area with an agriculture theme.

“It’s not a closed quarry,” Ketzenberger says. “(The turtles) can come and go as they want, so if they don’t have enough food or resources or whatnot they would wander off somewhere else but they seem to be pretty happy.”

“What we hope (the space) will instill in our young learners is to learn through play and through manipulatives; it is intentionally technology-free,” she says. “I know there is a big push for technology and certainly we have that in spades” as well.

New library branch opens

The meeting room space at the library will not only offer additional programming opportunities, but also the ability to provide and present programs that a larger amount of people may attend.

Walkersville bookworms now have a beautiful new space to meet and read. The recently opened Walkersville Branch of Frederick County Public Libraries is now home to more than 60,000 items to borrow. “Our original space (near to Walkersville Middle School) was really tiny,” says Robin Bowers, Walkersville Branch administrator. “We are the third-busiest library in Frederick County, as far as circulation and attendance, but we were almost the smallest in physical space. We could only have about a 12,000 to 15,000-item collection in [the former library] space.

At the former library facility, Bowers says only 10 to 12 people could attend a program. At the new space, many more can meet and connect. “What we are interested in doing is community building,” she says. “We want to be the host for those kinds of activities. ...We are working really hard to serve everybody [ages] 0 to 100 and have resources for all of those age groups.”

Veterans Day Parade Brunswick’s Veterans Day Parade is one of the oldest in the country. It began in 1932, six years before Veterans Day became recognized as a national holiday. Brunswick is one of only two Veterans Day sites in Maryland to be officially sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which allows official military groups — such as the Armed Forces Color Guard of Washington, D.C. — to participate. This year, the event is set for Nov. 5.

BURKITTSVILLE Burkittsville is a virtually unchanged example of an American townscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the town was a service center for the rural area around it. Today, Main Street’s buildings are still bordered by fields of crops and dairy farms, although there are no longer any commercial establishments in the town. Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War when forces of the Union and Confederate armies engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam.

EMMITSBURG Emmitsburg, a quiet town nestled at the foot of the mountains, offers peace and tranquility. Incorporated in the early 1800s, Emmitsburg was the home of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. She established the first Catholic school in the U.S., that grew into St. Joseph’s College. The property is now home to the National Fire Academy and Homeland Security. A short drive away is Mount Saint Mary’s University. In Emmitsburg you can relax but still be within driving distance to major cities such as Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Harrisburg. MIDDLETOWN Middletown is a small, rural community steeped in American history. It is located in the beautiful Middletown Valley that stretches between the Catoctin Mountains on the east and South Mountain on the west. A young Lt. George Washington, while surveying the South Mountain area, reported that the valley to the east was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Middletown continues to evolve from a settlement of farmers and ranchers to one of tradesmen, craftsmen, businessmen, clergymen, commuters and retired folk—without losing its agricultural roots. From the stately old Victorian-style homes and soaring church steeples to the rustic dairy farms and modern housing developments, residents find in Middletown a refuge where they can enjoy small-town life as it used to be.

MOUNT AIRY The Town of Mount Airy is a nationally accredited “Main Street Maryland Community” and holds the State of Maryland’s esteemed “Community Legacy” designation. Located directly off of Interstate 70, it is about 45 minutes from both the Baltimore and Washington metropolitan job markets. One can quickly become enamored with downtown Mount Airy and its small-town charm, quaint old buildings and friendliness that takes you back to a time long past. Mount Airy has experienced a dramatic increase in growth, but because of effective growth management and land use strategies, still retains that quaint, small-town atmosphere. It boasts a booming downtown with community and cultural events, retail establishments, antique and craft collectible shops, cafes and restaurants.

URBANA Nestled in the southeastern section of the county near major arteries such as Interstate 270 and Md. Routes 355 and 80, Urbana has become a haven for Montgomery County residents looking to move north and Frederick or Pennsylvania folks aiming to be closer to Washington, D.C., yet still live in a quiet, country setting. Villages of Urbana and Urbana Highlands subdivisions comprise the largest communities. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, the Urbana region has more than 9,000 residents, and that number is still climbing.

WOODSBORO Early history suggests that the Woodsboro area was a hunting and trapping ground for a wandering tribe of Susquehanna Indians. From early times, the settlement was located at a crossroads on the Indian trail running from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains. When the stagecoach became the primary mode of transportation, the place became an important stop on its itinerary. Today, Woodsboro is still primarily an agricultural area, but an important industry is centered on the three lime quarries that border the town.
