HIS TORY \ \
GEORGE WASHINGTON (May Have) Slept Here BY DUANE DOXZEN
It happens subtly enough. A fact gets stretched to include a seemingly logical assumption, or a story gets embellished with a few colorful adjectives. Add a few decades, mix in special interests and well-meaning storytellers, and you can end up with something mythical, or, more often, something almost-but-not-quite-right. Such is the case with “Washington’s Headquarters.” Little is known for sure about the Frederick building colloquially known as “Washington’s Headquarters,” for at least 100 years. Ticking off what we can be certain of regarding the structure: it was a small log and rough-hewn board-sided building located along Carroll Creek on West All Saints Street, just west of Court Street; the building was the subject of local photographer John Kreh at least twice, in 1898 and 1906, and printed on postcards; and the dilapidated cabin was demolished sometime in the early 20th century. The legend endures that George Washington, having traveled to Frederick in 1755 to meet with British major general Edward Braddock, found no room at the inn and instead bivouacked at the little cabin. It also is claimed that it was here that the young Washington first met Benjamin Franklin. Unfortunately, there isn’t any more documentation to support the legend than there is proof to discount it. Whether or not “Washington Slept Here” thus remains a mystery.
14
thefrederickguide.com
The appellation “Washington’s Headquarters” is at worst misleading, and at best an unnecessary addition to a good yarn. George Washington did travel to Frederick in April 1755 to meet Braddock, who was then commander of the British forces in the colonies. The general was traveling on an expedition against the French and their Indian allies. The story handed down is that Braddock “and his staff stayed about 10 days in Frederick’s stone tavern, and when Washington arrived here to join the staff the tavern was crowded, and he found shelter in the log house about a half mile to the east.” Interestingly, the name “Washington’s Headquarters” does not seem to appear in print until the early 1900s, though Washington’s 1755 meeting with Braddock is mentioned occasionally in local newspapers. One source where one might expect to find early references to the site is silent on the subject. Jacob Engelbrecht, who kept a
iSTOCKPHOTO.COM / JEWELEE
Nevertheless, in the early 20th century the oral tradition became accepted fact, as the story was printed in books such as William and McKinsey’s “History of Frederick County,” and in local newspapers. In 1955, almost exactly 200 years after Washington’s visit, the Historical Society of Frederick County thought enough of the story to declare it true on a plaque installed near where the cabin once stood.
After the old cabin was torn down, it was replaced by a commercial building. That structure was in turn torn down by 1960, when a new building was constructed on the site. In October 1960, the loss of the earlier historical structure was lamented: “Not even in Frederick where the cherishing and preserving of landmarks is traditional does the historical cycle of the new erasing the old subside. What better example when ‘Washington’s Headquarters’ becomes ‘Scotty’s Palace?’”

detailed diary of Frederick births, deaths, events, news, and opinion from 1818 to 1878, made no mention of the cabin in relationship to Washington. He expounded on community celebrations of Washington’s birthdays, noted dates associated with the first president, and even reported in excited detail his own trip to Washington, D.C., in 1854 to visit Washington’s Mount Vernon. But the diarist who revered the Father of Our Country made no mention of his own hometown’s claim. Whether the Frederick story is true or not, the last thing Washington would have required was a “headquarters.” Although he had commanded militia before — notably the previous July when he was utterly defeated by the French at Fort Necessity — he came to Frederick to offer himself to Braddock as an aide-decamp, a volunteer position with no rank and no position in the official chain of command. Washington would have access and influence, but no real authority over the British regulars or militia
under Braddock’s command. The most accurate description of Washington’s position during his time in Frederick is gentleman junior officer. The epilogue to the story is dark. After traveling through Frederick County (and lending his name to Braddock Heights) and Pennsylvania, Braddock’s forces met bitter and decisive defeat at the hands of the smaller forces of the French and their Indian allies near Fort Duquesne (now downtown Pittsburgh) at the Battle of Monongahela. The battle also is known as the Battle of the Wilderness or, quite simply, Braddock’s Defeat. The general himself was shot off his horse during the fighting, killing him and his reputation. George Washington fared better. He managed to survive the battle unscathed, his actions doing much to rehabilitate his military reputation. Washington would visit Frederick again, much later, but that is an entirely different tale.

While every market and location is different, and every season has its nuances, there are a few truths that stand the test of time and location. According to REALTOR® Greg Phillips of Re/Max Results, current president of the Frederick County Association of REALTORS® (FCAR), “listing a home is a marketing job and the house is a product for sale. First impressions count and you only get one chance to make a good one. It’s crucial to look at your home objectively, listen to professionals and take steps to maximize the salability of your home.” To that end, here are 5 tips from local experts:
1. Fix and Replace Homeowners grow accustomed to the look of their homes, so it is important to have a professional opinion when trying to decide what and how much work is needed to get your home ready to sell. That’s why the first step in preparation is to consult your Realtor. Getting a consultation early in the process will help you focus on what’s important, taking into account what potential buyers will be expecting. Not only that, your Realtor’s good advice will very likely save you time, money and effort. You want buyers to see your home as well maintained. Visit each room in your home and take care of minor issues such as a leaky faucet, missing trim, cracked windows or tiles, yellowed or broken outlet covers, and anything else that would cause a buyer to think you haven’t maintained your home. The more minor issues a buyer finds, the more he will be inclined to walk away.
Lighting fixtures are one of the easiest items to update, and can make the most impact. Never underestimate the effect the proper 18

If the look of your interior is dated, you’ll want to decide which items need to be replaced. Generally, kitchens and bathrooms are the most expensive rooms to update, and are the first rooms that buyers will scrutinize. If your wood floors are scratched or dull, you’ll want to fix them. Shampoo your carpets or replace if there is no life left. Make sure that all the systems in your home are working properly.

lighting can have on a space. It can make a small room appear larger and more welcoming, and it can be used to highlight a feature in a room. Light up the basement, dark hallways, the laundry room, eating areas and bathrooms. “It is amazing, considering the minimal cost and effort, that the type, shape and brightness of the light bulbs you use can make a huge difference,” said Maureen Nichols, Realtor at RE/MAX Realty Plus and FCAR president-elect. “Simply having an easily turned-on light in each room can make the showing experience that much more positive to a purchaser.”
2. Clean and Declutter
iSTOCKPHOTO.COM /YINYANG
The cleaner your home is, the better buyers will feel moving from room to room. Clean the windows (inside and out), mop the floors, dust, vacuum every inch of carpet, clean the bathrooms, the kitchen appliances, and clean up anything left behind by pets. Don’t forget the smells. And purchase some Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, as they can be a very useful tool. Decluttering is an important part of cleaning your home. Let’s face it, we all collect stuff. But buyers want to see your home, not your stuff. Always remember that potential buyers are seeing your home for the first time. What may have been perfectly acceptable to you may be a turn-off for them.

3. Paint - A Facelift for Your House A great way to improve the appeal of your home is by adding a fresh coat of paint. Fresh paint on both the interior and exterior adds a clean, new look for buyers. The smell is another benefit that registers as “new” inside the brain. Painting is one of the most affordable things you can do and raises the property value significantly. Some home improvement websites claim a fresh coat of paint can add anywhere from a 100% to 500% return on investment.
4. Curb Appeal First impressions matter: Our brains are wired for it, and there’s no changing that. Studies show that buyers make up their minds about the house in the first 20 seconds. What the buyer sees when he first drives up to your house makes an impression through which the rest of your house is judged. Really.
5. Staging Sells After you’ve done all that you can to prepare your home for the market, you’lll want to emphasize the features of your home in your 20
thefrederickguide.com
iSTOCKPHOTO.COM /BMCENT1
The easiest thing to do is to tidy up the front of the house. Clean the walkways and front steps; rent a power washer if necessary. Keep the bushes and trees trimmed. Add some color from flowers if the season allows, but be careful not to overdo it. Repair wood rot on the trim, and above all else, paint the front door. Replace old dingy door handles and the kick-plate. A welcoming entryway says, “this home is well-cared for.”
// R E A L E S TAT E (ASP). “The goal is to market your house in a way that it will allow the potential buyer to see themselves living there.” As important as home staging is, it will never make up for real issues with the condition of a home. Buyers will often see through those issues when they first tour your home, and if they miss them, they will certainly be uncovered in the home inspection. Data from ASP shows that while non-staged homes sit on the market for an average of 90 days, staged homes are only on the market for an average of 11 days. The return on investment, according to ASP, can be anywhere from 200% to 586%, depending on the particular improvement.

Staging can make the difference between just listing your house, and actually selling your house. There are a number of Realtors in Frederick County who are also ASPs or who offer home staging services to their selling clients.
marketing. If your home is not “perfect,” don’t sweat it, just keep emphasizing the positives. Don’t spend a lot of time and money creating something that’s not there, spend your time and efforts making what you have look its best. What exactly is home staging? Home staging is not decorating. Decorating is the art of making a home aesthetically pleasing and functional for the homeowners, their preferences, lifestyle, tastes and style. “Home staging is the art and science of optimizing a home’s appeal to the largest pool of potential buyers,” explains Amy Steinhoff, Frederick Realtor and accredited staging professional

FREDERICK INDUSTRY is focused on the future BY CITY OF FREDERICK OFFICE OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Frederick is a city typically recognized for its strong ties to a rich and picturesque past, but in an interesting twist, the city is also rapidly becoming a hub for companies focused on the future. In recent years, Frederick’s unique combination of socioeconomic characteristics has caught the attention of technology professionals and attracted a diverse community of telecommunications, web design and marketing, software development, bio-tech and cyber security companies to locate in the city. Here’s a quick look at 10 of the driving factors behind this movement:
1. Strategic Location Frederick sits as the northern anchor of the I-270 Technology Corridor. For tech companies looking for a central location, the city is attractively positioned within an hour of two major metropolitan areas: Washington D.C. and Baltimore; and three major airports: Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport. Locally, Frederick Municipal Airport additionally provides business and corporate air service and is the preferred executive airport in the National Capital Region.
2. A Business Friendly City Tech companies are also enjoying the benefits of the City of Frederick’s commitment to efficient, transparent procedures and personalized permitting assistance throughout the business process. The city’s Department of Economic Development is specifically available to all prospective and current business owners to help them navigate development and promote their successes.
3. Elimination of Business Personal Property Tax In 2015, the City of Frederick adopted a 10-year phase-out of the business personal property tax. Currently, tech-related personal business property is automatically 70 percent exempt. Exemptions will increase each year until 2025 when the business personal property tax is no longer assessed.

4. Tech Frederick Tech Frederick was formed to support, develop, and advocate for Frederick’s growing high-tech businesses. The organization provides human resource development, entrepreneurship training programs and seminars, and unique networking opportunities across the technology field. Open to all individuals in the information technology (IT) industry, Tech Frederick is primarily a peer group intended to bring area experts together and create a united community.
// BUSI N E S S
6. High-Tech Incubator Start-up ventures are already anticipating the benefits of Frederick’s new downtown incubator/accelerator to be open soon at 118 N. Market St., and operated by the Frederick Innovative Technology Center, Inc. (FITCI). A partnership of government and business organizations, the tech-focused incubator will provide flexible, collaborative work space to entrepreneurs and offer access to resources needed to grow creative concepts into viable businesses.
7. Fort Detrick Frederick is home to Fort Detrick – a major U.S. Army Medical Command installation. Accordingly, many local companies are able to capitalize on opportunities for federal contracting and technology transfer. Extensive local and statewide support networks strengthen local businesses as they compete in this global market.
5. Grow Program The City of Frederick offers a Micro-Grant Program to start-ups and small businesses in targeted industries, including advanced and information technology. This investment-matching grant allows a lowered cost of start-up or expansion costs — improving building capacity (and increasing employment opportunities within Frederick.)
8. Strong Local Education System Nearly 40 percent of Frederick’s workforce holds a bachelor’s degree or higher. Much of this impressive workforce talent can be credited to local resources. For the last decade, Maryland has ranked among America’s top states for public education. Frederick County is also home to three higher education institutions, Frederick Community College, Hood College and Mount Saint Mary’s University, which host about 20,000 scholars annually.

9. Quality of Life Technology companies’ talent recruitment and retention efforts have benefited immensely from the desirable local quality of life. In addition to readily available and quality education and health resources, Frederick boasts a vibrant arts and entertainment scene. With programming sponsored by Celebrate Frederick, Downtown Frederick Partnership, Visit Frederick and the Frederick Arts Council, Frederick makes frequent use of its many public venues including the Weinberg Center for the Performing Arts, Baker Park Bandshell, the Carroll Creek Amphitheater, and SkyStage. Frederick’s downtown district has long been a haven for foodies, with a wide-range of awardwinning, independent restaurants. In recent years, prompted by the success of Frederick-based Flying Dog Brewery, the local craft beverage community has gained national recognition. The city is home to the Frederick Keys minor league baseball team, more than 70 beautiful parks, and offers easy access to regional outdoor destinations, such as the Appalachian Trail and the Potomac River.
10. Unique Historic Setting About two dozen of Frederick’s technology companies have chosen to locate in the Historic Downtown. Companies within this district are given the opportunity to apply for a facade grant offered through city partners to re-energize existing buildings. In addition to providing easy access to local amenities, these beautifully renovated spaces create a unique office environment conducive to the creative nature of technology related work.

Students gear up for ANNUAL FCPS ACADEMIC TOURNAMENT
BY GINA GALLUCCI-WHITE
What is the only U.S. state capital with a population greater than 1 million? Which president served in between Grover Cleveland’s two non-concurrent terms? What show premiered on NBC in 2016 and became a major hit? These are just a sampling of the questions Brunswick High School students answered (Answers: Phoenix, Benjamin Harrison and “This is Us.”) Teams from all 10 Frederick County public high schools are gearing up for this year’s tournament set to take place every Friday from Jan. 5 until the championship match on Feb. 23 at Frederick High School. For the first six weeks, teams are given questions on a weekly topic determined by the school academic coaches. This year’s topics are bodies of water, Harry Potter, psychology and psychologists, classical composers, natural disasters and retro video games. During weeks seven and eight, the teams are seated by how well they scored during the regular season. The final topics are fictional locations and the year 1968. Math questions are also asked throughout the tournament. “This (tournament) is highly competitive,” says coordinator Nick Diaz. “This is as competitive as football and basketball. You have a lot of sportsmanship involved here but the coaches and the kids are extremely conscious of where they are and how those (standings) compare to everybody else. They want to play and they want to win.” The questions are put together by moderator Eric Reickel, an English teacher at Walkersville High School, Diaz, a retired math teacher, and Kelly Misner, assistant tournament coordinator. Diaz, who is in his seventh year as coordinator, said he loves to see how the students are attracted to the academic competition and the value of knowledge. Many folks, young and young at heart, will be asked a question and just say “I’ll Google it.” But in the academic tournament, “you have to know stuff,” Diaz says. “There is no substitute for knowing. It’s not enough to look things up. They have to know stuff.”

Beth Strakonsky, a Frederick High School social studies teacher and the school’s academic team coach, has a team of 25 students ranging from freshmen to seniors. No tryout is required, but students must come to practices held twice per week. She will often tell her students a quote she heard from another coach: “‘Everyone gets equal coaching, but not everyone gets equal playing time.’ It’s a competitive event and our goal is to win.” She finds practice questions from quiz bowl and academic team companies to help the students practice. During a regular practice, the students will spend about 15 minutes taking on math questions, too. “I try to make sure that I hit questions in all disciplines and the big category questions,” she said. Strakonsky said the students’ level of enthusiasm is contagious and they will wear their uniforms (a sweater vest or a team T-shirt) every Friday to school during the tournament season.

“I have kids who come practice who don’t want to be on the team but they love the idea of trivia and the idea of testing their own knowledge,” she says. “They just come to watch and have fun. For some kids, they might not be physically athletic but they are competitive by nature and this is a way for them to show off that competitive streak. Other kids just love to learn. This is a great opportunity to learn.” During the tournament, buzzing in early is key. Sometimes the moderator won’t even finish the question before a team is set to answer. Strakonsky practices with her team by reading sections of the question to see if they answer correctly. “If you jump before the question is finished, you risk giving the wrong answer,” she says. “The moderator may ask ‘In 1968, this man was assassinated’ and they will buzz in, but was he talking about Martin Luther King Jr. or Robert Kennedy? It’s a fine line because if you are not fast enough on that buzzer and another school can predict the question,” then you don’t get the point. Strakonsky encourages her team to watch the long-running TV quiz show “Jeopardy!” and play the online trivia game Sporcle. Those who sign up to take on speciality categories are also encouraged to study lists and do reading.
Diaz’s goal is to continue to make the tournament the premiere academic event in the county at the high school level. “We have a great thing going and I am very proud to be a part of it,” he says.

FREDERICK’S BIRTHING CIRCLE READY TO HELP Doula Network, Resource Library Among Offerings If you are currently pregnant, Frederick’s Birthing Circle is ready and willing to help you along your journey to motherhood. From a lending library filled with books to borrow for free to a full list of resources for local providers, to members who will set up a Meal Train for after delivery, the group strives to support women and families as they prepare to add a tiny new member. iSTOCKPHOTO.COM / WAVEBREAKMEDIA iSTOCKPHOTO.COM / SOLSTOCK
The Birthing Circle believes that community is crucial and makes a huge difference during birth. It is committed to providing support to families through the birth process, and to improving the health and well-being of the Frederick community by expanding local birthing options. The Birthing Circle provides peer-to-peer support in person and online to families through the childbirth process. According to the group’s website: “We believe that knowledge is a key step in empowering families, and work to hold a space where information can be shared. Our goal is to provide encouragement and support for families making informed choices for their birth and babies.” The Birthing Circle connects families with respected community providers and hosts multiple in-person group meetings each month, in Frederick, Montgomery and Carroll counties. The group believes that families and women deserve choices in pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum, and this is only possible if families know all of their options. “We are passionate about sharing all of the wonderful local resources available, and supporting families in whatever choice they make,” according to the group’s website. The Birthing Circle also has under its umbrella the Frederick Doula Project. A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a family before, during, and after childbirth. Doulas believe that all families deserve support during birth, and supports all birthing options and provide non-judgmental support. Support includes prenatal visits, pregnancy resources, continuous labor support, assistance with newborn care, and postpartum services. Studies show that having a doula attend your birth could decrease cesarean section rates, decrease the need for pain medication,

decrease the duration of labor and increase satisfaction in your birth experience. In addition to the Doula Project, the Birthing Circle offers the following services: • Childbirth education classes • Monthly meetings • Perinatal Mental Health Support Group • Online support groups • Maternity and infant clothing donation closet

FREDERICK OFFERS active seniors plenty of exercise class options BY GINA GALLUCCI-WHITE
Winter can be a tough time for seniors to stay active. But even if you can’t get out into your garden, cut grass or take a walk through your neighborhood, there are plenty of local fitness classes to get the heart pumping and muscles working. “I think fitness is for everyone,” said Tina S. Miller, Frederick Regional Health System’s Preventative Cardiology and Rehabilitation manager. “Everybody can do something. It just really depends on finding what that is and what works for you. ... As we all age, we lose different abilities. Exercise helps to maintain that higher quality of life for everyone. That is why I think it is pretty essential for everyone to find something to do. Plus it is also very social. A lot of seniors tend to not get out as often as they used to and this is a great time they can incorporate some activity with some socialization as well.”
“Within our program, a lot of folks here have a medical reason they have been told to exercise,” she said. “Some folks don’t, but the majority do and this helps them manage high blood pressure, heart disease or pulmonary disease. Whatever reason that the physician said you need to come in and exercise, it helps manage those diseases so it improves the quality of life.” Located on the Crestwood campus, the facility operates similar to a gym with classes and exercise equipment but without the competitive atmosphere. “A lot of seniors especially, but a lot of folks in general don’t know how to safely and effectively exercise,” Miller said. “They don’t really know where to start or how to begin an exercise program so we help them with that. We meet with them. We talk about their medical history. We talk about what their goals are. We do some measurements and with that information we write an exercise prescription that is appropriate for them. ...The programs are all individualized. We work with folks to make sure they are safe and using equipment effectively. We are always here and present when they are exercising.”

FRHS offers ProMotion Fitness+, an exercise program designed as an early intervention in preventing and/or managing chronic disease. There is no set age for the physician-referred program but the average age of participants is mid to late 60s.
FRHS also offers a number of classes for which seniors don’t need a doctor’s referral, including gentle and senior yoga as well as pilates. Seniors can also find multiple opportunities to stay active at the county’s four senior centers, in Brunswick, Emmitsburg, Frederick and Urbana. Regular classes include movement and motion, strength training, daily exercise, pickle ball and Wii Sports. Additional classes set to take place during the winter months include basic and advanced tai chi, chair and traditional yoga, line and square dancing and Zumba gold. So, even though the weather might be frightful, there is no need to stay cooped up in the house. Grab some workout clothes and head to these area fitness classes.

To plan your trip using Google Maps, simply input your “to and from” locations, change your mode from the car icon to the bus icon, and your trip options will appear with stop location, where to transfer if needed, and the length of your trip to plan arrival times.
TRANSIT EZ FARE TransIT ezFARE is TransIT’s Mobile Ticketing app is designed for passengers to be able to purchase bus tickets right on their smartphone with a credit or debit card instead of having to carry exact cash fare when boarding. The app has a variety of ticketing options based on your rider type (i.e. student, senior, etc.) and even offers a one-day-pass for $4. TransIT ezFARE also has an online ticketing center where parents and local organizations can “push” tickets to a smartphone of their choice.
ROUTESHOUT 2.0 RouteShout 2.0 is TransIT’s newest smartphone app that uses GIS technology to provide passengers with real-time arrivals of Connector routes at their bus stop location. The app allows passengers to locate their bus on a map along its route as well as get the next time arrivals to their location. RouteShout 2.0 also has a texting feature for passengers who may not have a smartphone. Each bus stop in Frederick has been retrofitted to have a unique stop ID number. The number begins with FCT and is followed by a three-digit number. To use the texting feature, passengers should text their stop ID number to 25252. The text will return with the next arrival times to that location.

IT’S TIME TO FIND YOUR PARK in Frederick County BY MELISSA JOSEPH MUNTZ, VISIT FREDERICK
It’s no secret that Frederick is full of amazing parks. From the historic fields of Monocacy National Battlefield to the majestic views of Cunningham Falls State Park, adventure is everywhere and residents and visitors don’t seem to have any trouble finding it. After all, many of Frederick’s most popular attractions are well known by visitors from all over the world. But did you know that the very first Washington Monument exists in a Frederick park or that the home of the “Blair Witch Project” is also the home to the 50-foot tall War Correspondents Memorial? These are just a few of the hidden gems Frederick County has to offer. Now is a great time to “Find Your Park” in Frederick County. Many are familiar with the famed Washington Monument, a popular attraction located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. What many don’t realize is that there was actually a monument built to honor George Washington before that version was even considered. High atop South Mountain, hidden by the woods that surround it, sits the original Washington Monument. Constructed on Independence Day in 1827, the monument is located in the aptly named Washington Monument State Park in Middletown. The beautifully manicured trail leading from the visitor center to the site is short, and not as rigorous compared to the 2-mile march that residents took up the mountain to create the attraction years ago. Like the monument in D.C., visitors who reach the top of the monument are rewarded with an incredible view. Just outside of the historic town of Burkittsville, a much larger hidden gem of Frederick can be found. Once home to Civil War journalist George Alfred Townsend, Gathland State Park holds a site that you truly can’t miss. Standing at 50 feet tall and flanked on one side with a tower, this striking and massive memorial holds 157 names of fallen war correspondents. When the memorial was dedicated in 1896, Townsend had constructed the arch as the only monument dedicated to journalists who had been killed in combat. The memorial is full of fascinating symbols and is a great backdrop for a picnic or hike through the park.
With such a picturesque location and so many recreational opportunities, Catoctin Mountain Park in northern Frederick County has become a recognized destination for outdoor fun. What many don’t know is that the park also offers a look into an infamous raid of a whiskey still. In 1929, Deputy Sherriff Clyde L. Hauver was killed in a raid on one of the largest and best equipped whiskey stills ever found in Frederick. After Hauver’s death, rumors flew about what had happened. The Blue Blazes Whiskey Still was massive and had produced enough moonshine to supply all of the speakeasies in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. While the original still was destroyed in the raid, a smaller still PHOTOGRAPHS COURTESY OF VISIT FREDERICK

from that time is on display in the park. Today, spirit-making is back in business in Frederick County, with the opening of several new distilleries serving up whiskey, rum, gin and moonshine. Sometimes the most interesting landmarks are hidden in plain sight. This is the case for Walkersville’s Lime Kilns, located in Fountain Rock Park. Limestone was a crucial resource in Frederick County at the turn of the century. From field fertilizers to road surfacing material, the uses for limestone were numerous and Frederick was conveniently located on top of a limestone fault. Six of the original eight kilns are still intact and can be visited and explored on the self-guided trail.

Michael O’Connor, the mayor of the City of Frederick, was sworn into office in December. The Board of Aldermen for the City of Frederick’s 62nd Administration includes: Ben MacShane, Donna Kuzemchak, Derek Shackelford, Roger Wilson and Kelly Russell.
Frederick City’s new Mayor Michael O’Connor says “transition” isn’t really the right word to describe his new administration, mostly because the former business manager at Saint Katharine Drexel Roman Catholic Church has served as a Frederick city alderman since 2009. “It is not as though I am coming in cold,” O’Connor said. “It is not as though the city is in some crisis. We have been very fortunate to inherit a city that has really been well managed over the last eight years and, frankly, longer.”
iSTOCKPHOTO.COM / COAST-TO-COAST
In November, O’Connor defeated two-time incumbent Republican Mayor Randy McClement, becoming the first Democrat to serve the top spot in City Hall since Jennifer Doughtery’s 2002-2005 term. “The challenge that we face moving forward is how do we meet the expectations of the community that we heard throughout the campaign which is (constituents wanting) a city government that is a little more embracing of optimization, of new ideas and a sense of urgency on some of the challenges that we face as a community,” O’Connor said. O’Connor campaigned on three broad themes: community engagement, improving communication and collaboration between City Hall and residents, and economic vibrancy and sustainability. These themes are guiding the transition process.
He will be joined at 101 N. Court St., by an all-Democratic Board of Aldermen: Donna Kuzemchak, Ben MacShane, Kelly Russell, Derek Shackelford and Roger Wilson. O’Connor says that he and all five alderman ran a collaborative campaign, which will speak to the approach they will take in terms of governing as well. During the first weeks and months of his administration, he plans to sit down to talk with city staff to understand where they believe challenges and opportunities await. He also wants to embolden and enable senior leadership into forward-thinking about their jobs as being more than just day-to-day management of city tasks and city functions. Born and raised in Frederick, O’Connor knows firsthand that the city is a wonderful community that has many assets. “We want to continue to position the City of Frederick as a preferred destination for tourists and visitors,” he says. “It is a great location for people to come and do business and want to do business and a community that has a great quality of life for the residents who make this their year-round home. We want to

continue the long record that the city has of seeing those things grow and enhance. We are going to do everything in our power to continue to send that message and be a cheerleader for the City of Frederick.”
This Winter in Frederick Winter months tend to be quieter for many people’s social calendars, but not in Frederick. Even as the temperature dips to freezing levels, folks will find plenty of indoor, and even some outdoor, activities. On the first Saturday of every month, the Downtown Frederick Partnership hosts the aptly named First Saturday, an event during which stores and restaurants stay open later and outdoor live entertainment is positioned throughout the downtown. Every month has a theme, but one of the most popular is February’s “Fire in Ice.” This year’s event, set to take place from 5 to 9 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 3, features more than 75 ice sculptures as well as fire dancers. “It’s a great, fun time,” says Kara Norman, Downtown Frederick Partnership’s executive director. “There is a whole lot of stuff happening all throughout downtown Frederick that you can enjoy and all of it is free.”
Area businesses sponsor each sculpture, carved by the Frederick-based Rosedale Ice. Some businesses that don’t have locations downtown, still sponsor a sculpture, and those are placed along Carroll Creek. In 2017, folks could sit on an ice throne and admire multiple sculptures including a mermaid, Olaf from “Frozen,” a sword in the stone, angel wings, a butterfly and even a Pokéball with Pikachu. During the day, the amphitheatre will play host to the Frederick Police Department, whose Polar Bear Plunge will raise money for the Special Olympics. Officers won’t be jumping in the creek, but instead a modified Dumpster filled with cold water. The partnership will have its large, inflatable video screen and cameras to catch every officer’s shocked expression as he or she jumps into the water. If you have a daughter, consider one of Frederick County Parks and Recreation Department’s most popular events — the annual Daddy Daughter Dance on Feb. 2 and Feb. 3 at the Frederick Fairgrounds’ Null Building. “(The event) gives the chance for daddies and their daughters to go and spend a night together just the two of them without mom,” says Erin Kleintop, the county’s recreation supervisor.
Last year, a small ice bar was hosted at the Carroll Creek Amphitheatre, as a test. This year, Norman says organizers plan to greatly expand the ice bar by hosting more breweries, distilleries and wineries. Folks who want to buy a drink will need to get a wristband showing they are older than 21 in order to buy a drink there.
The dance started more than 10 years ago and last year expanded to three dances over the weekend, one on Friday and two on Saturday. There were 750 spots available, and all sold out. Getting ready for this year’s event, there were already 350 couples signed up just a few weeks after registration opened. The event, for girls ages 4 to 12, features a DJ, mini manicures, a professional portrait, giveaways, craft projects and a huge chocolate fountain. Many dads wear suits and ties while the daughters wear

their fanciest dresses. Many will give their daughters corsages and some even rent limos for the occasion. “It is great to see there are so many dads and daughters wanting to come out to spend this night together,” Kleintop said. “I feel like once the dads and daughters come one year, they come until they phase out of the program.” Another popular event is the Frederick County Society of Model Engineers (FSCME) annual open house, from 1 to 4 p.m. every Sunday in January and the first Sunday in February at the society’s home base, a restored heavyweight Chesapeake & Ohio six-door baggage car at 423 E. Patrick St., right by the Frederick Fairgrounds. Weather permitting, folks will walk up and first notice the G-scale trains meandering around an outdoor track. Bundled up members will be outside making sure each engine and train car is running smoothly. A cozy 50-plus-foot indoor HO and HOn3 display can be found inside the car, with members milling about and answering any questions guests may have regarding the handmade scenery and detailed model trains. With 25 members and between 12 to 15 active members, club president and Germantown resident Bill Trout says he enjoys the company of the group. Club member and Spring Ridge resident Tom Schweikert says during the open houses he likes to see the kids eyes light up as the trains come around the tracks. PHOTOGRAPHS BY TOM FEDOR

BRUNSWICK

The once-sleepy City of Brunswick, located along the Potomac River, with close proximity to the C&O Canal, Harper’s Ferry, Antietam, Leesburg and Charlestown, is now filled with a new air of excitement.
Elected Officials
SHOPS
MAYOR
Residents (about 6,000 currently), business owners and city officials are stepping up efforts to revive and reinvent their community. Seeking to redefine Brunswick as an attractive outdoor destination, they are working to fill empty downtown storefronts, opening new businesses and building trails for hiking and biking.

With the city working on a new municipal building, a new music and events venue opening downtown, and the continuous expansion of Brunswick Crossing – a population-doubling housing development – Brunswick may finally be on track to change its fortune from the 1950s, when the railroad pulled out of the city abruptly..

Veterans Day Parade Brunswick’s Veterans Day Parade is one of the oldest in the country. It began in 1932, six years before Veterans Day became recognized as a national holiday. Brunswick is one of only two Veterans Day sites in Maryland to be officially sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which allows official military groups — such as the Armed Forces Color Guard of Washington, D.C. — to participate. This year, the event is set for Nov. 5.

BURKITTSVILLE Burkittsville is a virtually unchanged example of an American townscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the town was a service center for the rural area around it. Today, Main Street’s buildings are still bordered by fields of crops and dairy farms, although there are no longer any commercial establishments in the town. Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War when forces of the Union and Confederate armies engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam.

EMMITSBURG Emmitsburg, a quiet town nestled at the foot of the mountains, offers peace and tranquility. Incorporated in the early 1800s, Emmitsburg was the home of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. She established the first Catholic school in the U.S., that grew into St. Joseph’s College. The property is now home to the National Fire Academy and Homeland Security. A short drive away is Mount Saint Mary’s University. In Emmitsburg you can relax but still be within driving distance to major cities such as Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Harrisburg. You are just a few miles from the Gettysburg Battlefield, Ski Liberty Resort and numerous golf courses.

MIDDLETOWN Middletown is a small, rural community steeped in American history. It is located in the beautiful Middletown Valley that stretches between the Catoctin Mountains on the east and South Mountain on the west. A young Lt. George Washington, while surveying the South Mountain area, reported that the valley to the east was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Middletown continues to evolve from a settlement of farmers and ranchers to one of tradesmen, craftsmen, businessmen, clergymen, commuters and retired folk—without losing its agricultural roots. From the stately old Victorian-style homes and soaring church steeples to the rustic dairy farms and modern housing developments, residents find in Middletown a refuge where they can enjoy small-town life as it used to be.

MOUNT AIRY The Town of Mount Airy is a nationally accredited “Main Street Maryland Community” and holds the State of Maryland’s esteemed “Community Legacy” designation. Located directly off of Interstate 70, it is about 45 minutes from both the Baltimore and Washington metropolitan job markets. One can quickly become enamored with downtown Mount Airy and its small-town charm, quaint old buildings and friendliness that takes you back to a time long past. Mount Airy has experienced a dramatic increase in growth, but because of effective growth management and land use strategies, still retains that quaint, small-town atmosphere. It boasts a booming downtown with community and cultural events, retail establishments, antique and craft collectible shops, cafes and restaurants.

WALKERSVILLE Walkersville is a combination of two villages that were settled by German immigrants in the mid 1700s and early 1800s. By the late 1800s, the villages of Georgetown and Walkersville had grown so intertwined that it made sense to combine them into one entity, which was named Walkersville. Today, Walkersville aggressively pursues fiscal responsibility, recycling projects, and innovation. In 1995, it was credited with having the first State Police bicycle patrol in the nation. There are four schools, residential developments, a shopping center, several businesses and institutions, and numerous restaurants in the town. Walkersville has managed a rapid population growth wisely, enabling it to maintain a friendly, small-town atmosphere. Glade United Church of Christ

WOODSBORO Early history suggests that the Woodsboro area was a hunting and trapping ground for a wandering tribe of Susquehanna Indians. From early times, the settlement was located at a crossroads on the Indian trail running from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains. When the stagecoach became the primary mode of transportation, the place became an important stop on its itinerary. Today, Woodsboro is still primarily an agricultural area, but an important industry is centered on the three lime quarries that border the town.
