We can all admit 2020 has been a crazy year, filled with unexpected news around every turn. And all of a sudden, it’s autumn! No matter what’s going on in our lives, nature doesn’t stop. Nothing will stop the leaves from turning brilliant colors before falling to the ground. And speaking of falling, temperatures also are steadily dropping, signaling the changing season and time moving forward. Looking for a new place to explore the great outdoors and see some of those beautiful fall leaves? Try Frederick County’s newest park, Othello Regional Park. With its rolling fields and walking and biking paths, the park is a great place to take a break with plenty of fresh air to breathe. While you’re there, read all the historical markers to learn the interesting history behind the park’s name. Find out more on Page 44. This fall and holiday season won’t be like any we’ve had before, but despite the changes, the spirit of the season will certainly remain. Sprinkling ‘Black Girl Magic’ around Frederick 8-year-old author hopes to inspire other young girls Chaunetta Anderson always tells her daughters, “You are black girl magic and you can be whatever you want to be.” Now, Chaunetta and daughter Trinity, 8, who live in Frederick County, are sharing that message with all young girls of color, hoping to inspire them and to help them understand that they can achieve their dreams. Chaunetta and Trinity wrote and published the book “Black Girl Magic Sprinkles” in March, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the state into quarantine. “We had talked about writing a book before,” Chaunetta said, “however we never had time to figure out how to write it. The quarantine gave us the time that we needed.” The idea for the book’s storyline came from an experience that Trinity’s twin brother, Tristyn, shared. After transferring to a new school, Tristyn came home one day and said he saw something he had never seen before — a teacher at his school looked like him! He had never seen a Black teacher, and it opened up his eyes to the possibilities of what he could aspire to one day become. Hearing Tristyn’s story, Trinity and her mom thought it could make a great plot for a book, and “Black Girl Magic Sprinkles” was born. The book tells the story of a young girl named Trinity, who dreams of one day becoming a teacher. She is discouraged from her dream because she does not often see women who

Trinity, a third-grader, wrote the story in about a day, using a simple organization template that her mom, Chaunetta, a public educator, uses with her own students. Once the story was complete, they searched for the perfect illustrator. Trinity and her younger sister, Sevyn, selected the final illustrator for the book, and the family was pleased with the results. “We hope that [young girls] gain inspiration while reading the story and are engaged in the bright color illustrations,” Chaunetta said. The book can be purchased directly from the Andersons, with personalized packaging and an autograph from the authors, at BGMBooks. com. They also offer matching face masks, bookmarks, and a line of Educate Yourself Lip Balms that feature facts about African American women in history at the site. The book is also available at many online book retailers. Trinity and her mom also held a book signing recently at Frederick’s 4 The Love of Sweets. Chaunetta and Trinity are excited about sharing their positive message with young girls of color in Frederick and beyond. “In the times that we are living in right now, with blatant racism and social injustice, our young children need to know that they can dream beyond the stars,” Chaunetta said. “They are somebody! ‘Even if you haven’t seen it, doesn’t mean you can’t achieve it.’”

Take a trip around the world when you visit the adorable new Ibiza Cafe on West Fourth Street in Downtown Frederick. Tucked into the side of a building not far from the old Carmack Jay’s and across from a laundromat, the café is a welcome new source of refreshment in this part of the city. The three rooms inside the shop and outdoor patio have a European coffeehouse feel, inspired by owners Steven and May Buckingham’s extensive travels. They each hail from countries outside the U.S., Steven from Germany and May from Taiwan, which brings some international flair to the space. The coffee shop’s Asian influence comes from May, who knows the farmer who grows their teas overseas personally. The couple has lived in Frederick for 20 years and, after visiting a variety of coffee shops around the globe, they say they wanted to create the kind of place they’d appreciate visiting. At Ibiza Cafe, they serve single-origin coffees and espresso in Japanese-style siphons as well as pour overs. A variety of organic hot teas and specialty teas, such as Whipped Assam Tea with Mango, and much-talked-about bubble teas are also available. If you don’t know much about bubble teas, head over to Ibiza Cafe for a lesson! Bubble teas, aka boba, are sweetened teas that originated in Taiwan with a foamy layer of bubbles on top and a layer of chewy tapioca balls that sink to the bottom, offering a tasty and visual delight. Ibiza offers indoor and outdoor seating and also serves light food — panini (pressed sandwiches), croissant sandwiches, pastries and waffles. You can also catch live music here or chat with the knowledgeable owners on all things coffee and tea. The café is already gaining quite a reputation for the staff’s expertise — and their overall friendliness. “We get high-quality teas and coffee, but most important is the atmosphere,” Steven said. “It should be a place where you can escape daily life, where you can start dreaming … where you can let your guard down.” Ibiza Cafe 8 W. Byron was “trying to find some character that could play across the gaps and support beams,” and in his research, he came across the Astrodon johnstoni, the state dinosaur of Maryland (who knew?). He painted the massive creature amid a swirling snowstorm. “My favorite thing about downtown is the occasional, amazing phenomenon when Frederick experiences a blizzard and the whole community lights up, as it did during the ‘Snowmageddon of 2010,’ when I first moved to Downtown Frederick,” he said. “I tried to make it a homage to my favorite aspect of downtown living. I usually wait all year for winter and snow days here.” Kara Norman, executive director of Downtown Frederick Partnership, said the nonprofit uses art as a way to move people through Downtown Frederick. “Dino Alley,” for instance, is an important wayfinding piece, she said.

elegant experience to people and in turn they get to enjoy and share memories with their loved ones.” Berry says her graze boards of curated fine meats and cheeses with all the accompaniments ranging from gourmet jams, jellies, honey, dried and fresh fruits, some veggies something sweet are “the perfect adult ‘lunchable,’ elevated.”

Artfully arranged meats, cheeses, crackers and accoutrements grace the beautiful boards put together by Candace Berry, owner of Grazeful. And though they may appear too pretty to eat, not noshing on these boards would be a mistake. Grazeful’s thoughtfully curated menu of fine charcuterie and cheeses is meant to be enjoyed by all of your senses. After all, these “grazes,” as Berry calls them, are edible art, since we all “eat with our eyes before our mouths,” she says.

No two boards are exactly alike and there’s no set menu at Grazeful. Instead, Berry shops local for seasonal foods to bring a uniqueness to each grazing table through its ingredients. Always a lover of cheese and a foodie at heart, Berry became inspired by beautifully arranged charcuterie boards via a book received as a gift. She had been making “graze boards” for friends and family for parties, game days, and holidays. She launched the business in March, and said it has been an instant success. “Everyone loves food and food will always bring people together and now more than ever, the world needs that,” she said. “I feel that I can provide an

As she creates each graze, Berry is always trying new combinations, putting new things together. She says those who enjoy her boards share a conversation with others they are grazing with, and decide what “perfect bites” they like the best. The name “Grazeful” is a take on the word grateful, which, Berry says, is how she lives her life. “I will always be reminded to remain grateful, which is what I truly am that I get to create these grazes for people,” she said. Located just over the border in West Virginia, Grazeful offers its grazes to a wide geographic range. The Grazeful website serves as a one-stop shop where customers can purchase and book orders for any size graze board directly. Private and group workshops are also being scheduled.
