Spring came in like a lion. Not a sweet, fuzzy, soft lion but a big, frosty-breathed snow lion! Hopefully the surprise snow storms are a thing of the past and we can charge ahead into the April showers, because we are well overdue for some May flowers! Frederick County weather isn’t the only thing around here that always keeps us guessing! Local chefs are creatively crafting surprising dishes and shop owners are continually coming up with new ways to welcome shoppers to explore their wares. New restaurants, shops, and events are keeping the landscape of Frederick vibrant and interesting! In this issue, our writers explore several new restaurants and a fun place to revisit the 80s pinball craze, and give some behind-thecurtain deets on the ever-expanding Frederick steampunk scene. Frederick County may be steeped in the history of our forefathers, but each fresh day means new history is being made as well. So get out there, and be a part of it!

Even with three generations of experience and more than 30 years of service to Frederick, The Dutch Plant Farm may still be a best-kept secret to some. This family-owned business carries all the garden supplies you need: from seeds to soils, amendments, fertilizers and insecticides, as well as organic options. Dutch Plant Farm staff can skillfully guide you through all of your houseplant and gardening adventures. That seems obvious, for a business with “plant” in its title. What isn’t so obvious about this place is the secret garden feeling that visitors can experience. Koi ponds, wonderfully colorful plants and blooms and the real stars of the show — several feathered family members — can be found around every corner. A truly family-friendly place, Dutch Plant Farm welcomes the serious gardener through the young, inexperienced explorers. With so much to see, it continues to be a must-visit, many times each season for novice gardeners and old pros.

Were you a child of the 1980s? If you were, then I’m willing to bet that you probably spent many hours of your youth in a darkened arcade, playing games with names such as Ms. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and Rampage. Remember the pure joy of eating those tiny blinking dots, chasing ghosts and getting to the next level? Or the excitement when you successfully smashed another skyscraper to the ground?

17

Or maybe you were more of a 1970s kinda kid, a pinball wizard, perhaps? Clicking the bumpers and watching the lights flashing, hearing the bells ringing and watching the digits scroll as you rack up thousands of points. No matter your game preference, you’re definitely in for a treat. Frederick now has its own well-stocked arcade parlor, and it’s not just for kids. Spinners Pinball is guaranteed to take you back to your youth, to a time when it was totally appropriate to spend an entire afternoon in the dark playing games and spending all your pocket money. But the good news is you won’t need any pocket change. For one low price Spinners allows you and your family to play all of its arcade games, pinball machines and more all day. You can even pay via credit card. Your donation allows you to play any one of the dozens of pinball machines or video games set up inside a large warehouse space on North East Street, slowly being renovated and added to by Spinners’ founder, Joe Said. Said has been developing the idea for Pinball EDU since early 2012, and is responsible for the vision, strategy and fundraising efforts for the nonprofit organization behind all the fun. His hope is that he can marry his love of pinball with his interest in education and help reach out to people with developmental disabilities through

the games.

Said hopes to demonstrate pinball’s effectiveness in developing important life skills such as motor planning and socialization through individual and group programs, mostly on weekdays. He also intends to begin engaging the local community in data collection and research to validate the use of pinball for STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education and therapeutic intervention. According to Spinners’ website: “As a game, pinball engages the child in active play and creates a welcome distraction from the traditional demands of therapeutic exercise. It provides significant opportunities to practice and improve gross and fine motor skills and coordinated movements, especially those involved in vision. And of course, it’s an incredibly fun game that can be naturally incorporated into a social activity or a broader social skills program.” Folks who come in for free play on weekends help to fund Pinball EDU’s educational efforts. So a visit to Frederick’s newest local arcade is literally a win-win!

Ahead Plenty of buildings in Frederick today existed during all or part of what is commonly referred to as the Victorian era, from 1837-1901. They therefore would have been present to “witness” much history: slavery and flawed native son Roger Brooke Taney; the debut of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”; the Southern rebellion and the Civil War that ended it, as well as Barbara Fritchie and her “old grey head”; the founding of Hood College; and the infancy of domestic electricity use. The list, of course, could be much longer, after all, the Victorian Era was enduring.

Medical Marijuana is a hot-button topic nowadays. Whether you’re a supporter or not, claims that marijuana can treat a variety of ailments from anxiety to Parkinson’s disease have spiked an influx of states legalizing it for medical use as well as new dispensaries in our area: Kannavis in Urbana, Green Health Docs in Frederick, and Euphoria Wellness in New Market. All of them sell quality medicinal marijuana and by-products in a judgment-free and discreet environment, all of them are regulated by the state, and all of them require a Medical

But, isn’t it...like...a drug, man? Well…kinda. Federally, marijuana is classified as a “Schedule 1” substance, meaning that it’s considered highly addictive with no known medical applications; other examples are heroin, LSD and ecstasy. H oweve r, t h e D r u g E nf o rc e m e nt Ag e n c y (DEA) won’t likely be paying a visit to our local dispensaries anytime soon, as federal government has de-emphasized enforcement of federal law, in favor of state laws. The State of Maryland has recognized the potential medical benefits from marijuana and has approved it for the treatment of certain qualifying ailments, provided that traditional treatment has not been effective.

Then...I can just go to my doctor...right? Sorry, it’s not that simple. Since marijuana is federally classified as a Schedule 1 Drug, you can’t just waltz into your primary care physician and get a script for marijuana to fill at a dispensary. Premium sides include plantains with the right amount of tender sweetness, and mac and cheese, which is flavorful and rich. The collards, sweet potatoes and cabbage are each tasty and complementary to the mains as well. A meal here isn’t complete without a batch of cocoa bread. Do you always squeeze in an extra tomato plant, another row of beans or hill of zucchini? It seems like a good idea at the time, until they all start to

produce all at once. Your family, friends and co-workers start to hide as you try to pawn off yet another bag of zucchini or tomatoes. Here is a solution that satisfies your gardening obsession and feeds the hungry in your community. Designate some growing space to a Giving Garden and donate the harvest to your local food bank or pantry.

Feeding America reports that 41 million Americans struggle with hunger, and many are children and seniors. Gardener’s Supply Company is inviting gardeners to lend a hand and take the “Garden to Give,” pledge to grow food to give to those in need. They surveyed food pantries to find out what types of fruits and veggies people most enjoy eating, and those that store well. You’ll find a simple Giving Garden plan for beets, carrots, cabbage, Swiss chard, kale and winter squash on their website at gardeners.com. Best of all these late maturing vegetables will be ready for harvest all at about the same time, so you can make your donation in just one trip. Bluegrass in

I’ll admit it. This West Virginia born girl, who played fiddle with her Grandpap growing up, couldn’t figure out why Baltimore would be a destination for a Bluegrass festival.

71

Bluegrass is the music of my people; English settlers in 18th Century

Appalachia. What I didn’t know was that just after WWll, many of those immigrants migrated to Baltimore, which actually helped make Baltimore briefly the capital of Bluegrass! The 1950s Baltimore group, the Stoney Mountain Boys, Carnegie Hall. So, I stand corrected. The 6th annual Charm City Bluegrass Festival is a newly expanded two-day bluegrass music, food and family-friendly festival taking place in Baltimore’s Druid Hill park on April 27 and April 28. Winner of the 2016 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Momentum Award for Event of the Year and 2015 Best Festival by Baltimore Magazine, this two day festival will feature local food

became the first bluegrass band to appear at

and vendor partnerships with Union Craft Brewery, The Local Oyster, Brick n’ Fire Pizza and Jacks Hard Cider, among others yet to be announced. Three stages and 21 bands will provide a dynamic musical lineup with headlining acts including the Devil Makes Three, The Travelin’ McCourys and The Steeldrivers all of which will provide festival goers with a comprehensive musical experience featuring traditional and progressive bluegrass, folk, and Americana.

Artists, kid’s games, crafts, and spontaneous jam sessions will be followed by a late night after-party Saturday at the 8x10 featuring more bluegrass music and entertainment. Everything needed to help make the Charm City Bluegrass Festival one of Baltimore’s most family-friendly music festivals of the year.
