hen Catherine “Cat” Barnstone Szafran discovered Frederick 26 years ago, she instantly knew it was “home.” A photographer who’s been featured in a variety of gallery exhibitions, Cat had literally grown up around the world. She was born in Boston, and her artist dad, Myron Barnstone, soon relocated the young family to Spain, Paris, back to the US, then back to London, and then the rolling hills of Devon, England.

VISIT

“I grew up with an art gallery on the walls of every house,” Cat said. “My dad always created a studio and photography darkroom in each home we lived in, and I loved to watch him work.” Myron utilized the precise geometric design essential to classical art -- the Golden Section -- to create paintings, drawings and photos rich with dimension and movement. It was after he had received wide acclaim in Europe for several one-man exhibits that Myron made a radical decision. Concerned that so many modern art classes had abandoned teaching a disciplined foundation for drawing, and just suggested students “copy” what they saw, Myron put away his pens and brushes and started teaching. First, though, he burned or rolled up and locked away hundreds of his own works. He didn’t want to unduly influence his students’ artistic vision. The family ended up in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley, just north of Philadelphia. Myron taught briefly at Lehigh University and Moravian College before launching his own studio in Allentown. When his classes outgrew the location, he moved Barnstone Studios to a 3rdfloor walkup in nearby Coplay. With its open design, huge windows letting in natural light and aged wooden floors, the expansive space 21

was similar to the studios of Europe. For the next 35 years, thousands of students from across the country and around the world would find Myron, and study with him for months, years or even decades. Cat supported her father’s work, but embarked on her own path. Besides becoming an accomplished photographer, she was a tireless advocate for people seeking help with addiction and mental illness. When she met and quickly fell in love with math teacher Doug Szafran, she had only one request -- she wanted to remain within a four-hour drive of her father’s Pennsylvania studio. Doug agreed, and after a search for a suitable home base, the married couple soon succumbed to the charms of Frederick. The rolling hills reminded Cat of Devon; the city was near a teaching position for Doug, and they both loved the creative art scene and warm people of the area. Besides, Frederick was just three hours from Coplay. For the next three decades, Cat could maintain a close relationship with her father while enjoying her own life in Frederick. It wasn’t until 2013 things began to change radically. A shaky economy meant fewer students enrolling in Myron’s classes, and at the age of 80, he reluctantly made the decision to close the Coplay location and retire. He moved to Frederick to be close to Cat and Doug, and began a rapid decline in health. He died in October of 2016, passing the mantle of Director of Barnstone Studios to Cat. In addition to having to deal with the overwhelming grief of her father’s death, Cat had to quickly step up to continue the rich Barnstone legacy. Her father had recorded his complete drawing course, a series on palette control and color theory, and an entire class on the Golden Section, the precise geometric design at the heart of classical drawing. He shared with his students the secrets the most

famous artists knew and used in their iconic, timeless masterpieces. It was now Cat’s responsibility to maintain BarnstoneStudios.com, where students could order Myron’s lessons. She also made the decision to finally open his archives, which had been sealed for almost 50 years, and to share Myron’s original works with the world. In 2017, she connected with Jennifer Findley, owner of ArtistAngle Gallery in Downtown Frederick, and the two made an historic decision. Findley offered to dedicate her gallery space to a revolving exhibit of The Barnstone Studios works, beginning in March and ending in July 2018. It has become the first showing of Barnstone art in the nation, exhibits in the 1960s. Most of the work in the expansive Barnstone Studios archives had never before been seen publicly. Frederick has set the stage for turning an internationally respected master art teacher into an equally respected master artist. Realizing that Barnstone Studios alumni defined Myron’s life purpose, Cat immediately invited those who wanted to exhibit alongside their mentor to submit images of their own work for consideration. 24

and the first public viewing since his acclaimed European gallery

VISIT

Cat decided to break the “months of Myron” into four separate exhibits: “Evolution: Growing into Mastery” to launch, “Environment: Listening to the Land” in April to tie in with Earth Day and show how artists’ surroundings influence their work; “Emotion: How Art Awakens the Soul” in June and finally a one-man show in July. Alumni jumped at the chance to show how Myron’s teachings guided their successful careers, and since the “Evolution” launch March 11, ArtistAngle has offered Frederick residents and visitors both an historic opportunity to view previously hidden master works by Barnstone, and the chance to see how many of his students have gone on to distinguished art careers of their own. Art patrons are eagerly purchasing both original Barnstone works, and limited edition prints of selected pieces. ArtistAngle is also hosting Barnstone Method art classes, where accomplished alumni from around the country travel to Frederick to teach the secrets of classical design. Cat said she’s thrilled with the positive reaction the exhibits are receiving in Frederick, and she thinks it’s only fitting that her adopted hometown is the launch point for the next iteration of the Barnstone legacy.

Nestled snuggly among the little shops and restaurants on Main Street New Market is a haven of healing and spiritual awakening: Peridot Healing.

Anyone who meditates or values spiritual, as well as physical, health, will value Peridot, which opened on June 1. The shop carries a collection of healing gemstones and crystals, all beautifully displayed. Incense, herbs, aromatherapy candles and essential oils are all available to help you turn your home into a sanctuary. This passion-turned-business won’t remain a simple wellness store for long. In time, the owners plan to expand the shop to include space for a library of wellness literature and tarot cards. In time, they also hope to offer appointments with professional healers at Peridot Healing as well. Healing appointments will be taken for reiki, a

the future, as the need for such services continues to grow. Over the course of 25 years, Habitat’s programs have given 37 individuals and families the chance to become homeowners when it would have been impossible otherwise. This has been accomplished through the organization’s original program of constructing new residences, which continues to this day, but also through the Affordable Housing Land Trust, which was added to the organization’s programs in 2013 to create housing units that would remain in affordability well into the future. Additionally, the organization began offering home repair services in 2010 through the Neighborhood Revitalization program, and now serves dozens of households each year where residents who already own their own homes cannot afford needed repairs. This program serves a large number of senior citizens in the community, often providing aging in place services in addition to the needed repairs. Habitat Frederick hosted a Celebratory Breakfast to recognize this momentous 25th anniversary. The event brought together current and past board members, volunteers, homeowners and Habitat supporters, all who have worked together action, Habitat builds homes, communities and hope”. Tastiness Tried and True

Frederick has become a culinary destination, due in large part to the vast array of restaurant offerings that have opened in the Downtown Historic District. But, there are a handful of local, independent, family-owned establishments outside Downtown Frederick that have helped satisfy the appetites of locals and tourists alike for decades. Four of those restaurants — Gladchuk Bros. Restaurant, Red Horse Steak House, Dutch’s Daughter and Fitzgerald’s Shamrock Restaurant — stand out as places with unique identities that have been serving delicious foods in Frederick County for more than 30 years apiece.

GLADCHUK BROS. RESTAURANT Gladchuk Bros. Restaurant opened its doors on Sept. 27, 1988. And yes, it is owned by three brothers. John is a trained chef, Steve handles the front of house, and Bobby focuses on the backend of the business (finances, etc.). “The beauty of our dynamic is that each person brings a specialization. We all respect one another’s departments and trust each other,” Bobby said. “We love to work together.” Not every family can say that. Originally from New England, the brothers are quick to point out that they offer not only German food, but also great seafood choices. “Sometimes we are classified as a German restaurant, but we are not. “We focus on an international flair, with old-school quality,” Bobby said. That being said, many customer favorites are the restaurant’s German dishes, such as the German dinner: bratwurst and knockwurst with braised red cabbage, homemade applesauce and potato croquettes. Their applesauce is more like baked apples diced and their potato salad and German chocolate cake come highly recommended. They have a wonderful assortment of breads, and offer a creamy vinaigrette house salad dressing that is worth ordering. One secret to their success is they truly enjoy serving others. “We love being here. Frederick is an all-American town and we get customers friends,” Bobby said.

RED HORSE STEAKHOUSE The year 2018 marks the golden anniversary for Red Horse Steak House, which has been in continuous operation since January 1968. When my wife and I first moved to Frederick, it was one of the first restaurants we visited. And we often used its iconic red horse statue, standing high above the convergence of many highways on the west end of town, to find our bearings in our new hometown. We would know we were almost home, or at least heading in the correct direction, if we saw that red horse, standing as a silent sentinel at the gateway to Frederick. Each year we mark our anniversary of moving to Frederick by eating dinner at Red Horse. The Red Horse was one of the area’s first public restaurants to offer an upscale menu, specializing in hand-cut steaks, fresh seafood, and full bar accommodations. Over the five decades it has been in business, it has seen some changes. At one time, the bar hosted regular performers that included comedic pianists, guitarists, organ players, vocalists, and more. The lower level at one time was home to a night club called the Golden Horseshoe Lounge and featured live dance entertainment (that area now serves as a banquet and reception facility that hosts weddings, rehearsal dinners, and other private functions). Current owners Roy & Ken Bromfield are quick to point out that quality in food and service steaks are in their name, you can’t go wrong with choosing any of their hand-cut selections. I always enjoy eating on the right side of the restaurant, where you can actually watch your

DUTCH’S DAUGHTER There is no other restaurant like Dutch’s Daughter — it is truly one of a kind. Eileen Giddeon first opened the restaurant in the mid-1980s inside the Frederick VFW. In March 2000, it relocated to its current spot on Himes Avenue. The new space’s building and concept includes three distinct areas. On the lower level, called Dutch’s Dungeon, a medieval feel allows for a casual dining experience and full bar. The main level is intended to feel like home, with fireplaces in every room, woodwork throughout, and wall decor that welcomes families of all types. The upstairs has a seating capacity of 300 and hosts nonprofit fundraising events, weddings and corporate luncheons. It’s also home to the Sunday Brunch Buffet, with something for everyone, including $1 mimosas or Bloody Marys. Eileen’s daughter, Alley Hammond, is also involved in the business, and takes pride in the consistency and freshness of the food they offer. Dutch’s Daughter is known for its crab cakes and seafood, which Hammond says is delivered six days per week. Dutch’s uses real crabmeat and no fillers in their cakes. With best-selling items such as the Filet Oscar (a steak with crab imperial, asparagus and hollandaise), the menu doesn’t change often. Most is made in-house, including sauces, dressings and desserts. Fresh cobbler and delicious breads, especially the baked crab

SHAMROCK RESTAURANT Just steps from the highway at U.S. Route 15 South, Fitzgerald’s Shamrock Restaurant has been family owned and operated since 1963. The Shamrock strives to provide the best of Irish and American cuisine, as well as great hospitality. The Thurmont location is a part of the Shamrock’s draw — the area is a hub for tourism, with the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton and the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, many covered bridges, orchards, and a national and state park in close proximity. The dining room takes some of this into account, with large picture windows providing views of farmland, Catoctin Mountain and a nearby winery. The ambiance is definitely welcoming and comfortable. Tradition and consistency are key at the Shamrock. The Shamrock does change up its menu from time to time, but there are many staples that always stay. It’s known for seasonal specialities such as Maryland soft-shell crab, Shepherd’s pie made from scratch, the Monday special corned beef and cabbage (on the menu for five decades) and a seafood sampler with scallops, shrimp, crab imperial and baked fish fillet. Each March, the restaurant hosts a St. Patrick’s Day celebration which, by the way, lasts three weeks not just one day. Pies and breads are baked daily, packed with pounds of fruit. And the Shamrock grows its own vegetables, including peppers, tomatoes, kale, eggplant and zucchini, on-site and in family gardens.

It’s Electric You know the saying, you never forget how to ride a bike.

RIDE

I’d say I’m a decent bike-rider: I’m proud to say that when my husband and I trekked through Montreal on a bike tour, I didn’t fall off even once despite cobblestones, some sharp turns and really steep hills. However, Pedego in Frederick is changing the game when it comes to the bicycle you learned to ride as a kid. I’ve seen gas-powered motor bikes, motorcycles and mopeds, but never hybrid-electric bikes like these that you can pedal if you want. They aren’t loud or heavy like you’d expect, and since they handle like a regular bike, there’s no extra special training required! If you’re scratching your head and wondering how this works, let me break it down. Pedego bikes have four basic parts: the motor, the battery, the throttle and the pedal assist. The motor is kind of like a regular bike motor, so you can shift gears depending on the terrain or incline you’re riding on, although it does connect with the other three parts. The battery is rechargeable, that actually has a USB charger and only takes about 2-6 hours to charge. The throttle connects with the pedal assist on the handlebars, so when you twist the throttle and it activates the battery-powered pedal assist, you get a little extra juice when you pedal on the lowest setting, and on the highest, you actually don’t need to pedal at all. When you walk into Pedego Electric Bikes on South Carroll Street in Frederick, just up the street from Sky Stage, you’ll be greeted by a line of brightly colored, classic-looking bikes lined up neatly on a beautiful rug that Ringo Starr himself is said to have stood on. You’ll also likely see Arlo, the sweetest dog, a Great Pyrenees/German Shepherd mix.

RIDE

RIDE

You can rent Pedego’s bikes by the hour (starting at $25) or all day (starting at $100). And a number of different tours are in the works. They’re teaming with Visit Frederick to design bike tours around town to take cyclists from Mount Olivet Cemetery to Hood College and everywhere in between. They even mentioned a possible gastro/brewery tour in the future, which sounds seriously fun. Now I know you’re wondering, what is it actually like to ride one of these things? I’ll admit it’s a little spooky at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s so much fun. They have all of the regular bike controls, such as a hand brake and gear shifts, but when the throttle kicks in, you feel like a superhero for a second. For me, the moment of superhero glory was met abruptly by panic over how I was going to turn around going so fast. But I was assured I was not actually going that fast — maybe 3mph? They can go up to 20 mph. If you take a spin on one and decide you can no longer live without an electric bike, not to worry! Pedego also sells and services them. One bike costs about $1,500, but require little maintenance. Tune-ups are recommended every six months. And you’ll find that for zipping around town, these are way more convenient and efficient than your average SUV.

Take a Walk

in the Woods “The mountains are calling, and I must go.” ~ John Muir The words of naturalist, author, environmental philosopher and socalled “father of the national parks,” John Muir, ring true for many of us. The rugged trails and wooded beauty of the mountains and trails of the United States call out, and we must go and explore them.

HIKE

There’s nothing quite like taking a walk in the woods, stepping into some hiking shoes and out of your comfort zone into the cool shade that so many giant branches provide. In Frederick County, we are fortunate to live close to many beautiful mountains and trails, perhaps the most famous being the Appalachian Trail, which is celebrating the 50th anniversary, in 2018, of being designated the first National Scenic Trail by Congress (as part of the National Trails System Act). The Act created a system of national trails “to promote the preservation of, public access to, travel within, and enjoyment and appreciation of the open-air, outdoor areas and historic resources of the nation.” All of that is a mouthful, but what it means is that the natural beauty and the inner calm inspired by the Appalachian Trail has been protected for five decades, and will be for many more.

a day’s drive of the Appalachian Trail, which winds its way north from Georgia to Maine, through 14 states. And, lucky for us, Maryland is one of those states. The Appalachian Trail in Maryland follows a 40-mile route along the backbone of South Mountain, a north-south ridge that extends from Pennsylvania to the Potomac River, and bounces back and forth along the border of Frederick and Washington counties. 74
