Whisper network Author: Chandler Baker A crackling exposé of working motherhood, corporate malfeasance, and female friendship in the era of #MeToo. At a Nike-esque athletic apparel company in Dallas, five women — from sleek blond attorneys in the C-suite to the cleaning lady - are drawn together by the sudden death of their philandering boss.

This darkly funny book vies to answer the age-old question “Just how huge is our collective appetite for tales of male novelists behaving badly?” Dermansky (Twins) uproariously follows a Great Literary Man as he’s seduced by his college pupil, and her recently divorced mother, against the backdrop of a wealthy Connecticut enclave.

Going Dutch Author: James Gregor Exhausted by dead-end forays in the gay dating scene, surrounded constantly by friends but deeply lonely in New York City, and drifting into academic abyss, 20-something graduate student Richard finds himself on a romantic and existential collision course that brings about surprising revelations. Going Dutch is an incisive portrait of relationships in an age of digital romantic abundance, but it’s also a heartfelt and humorous exploration of love and sexuality.

fell in love with Cape Town on my first visit there. That is why I have visited the city again and again. The last trip to the beautiful city was on a 10-day adventure and luxury outing. Cape Town has plenty of party places, a wide array of foods and warm people that make the town feel like a home away from home. A visit to the gorgeous Hout Bay beach and driving into the peninsula through to the historical Cape of Good Hope is simply breathtaking. There are penguins at Boulders Beach, crazy surfing at Muizenberg Beach (this you must never miss) and stunning views on the hike up Table Mountain. I know most Pulsers love Sandton City in Johannesburg for all their shopping needs. It is only comparable to UAE’s Dubai. I am an equally faithful domestic tourist and I take pride in having visited most of the tourist destinations in East Africa. I have hiked up Mt Kilimanjaro, explored the white beaches of Chale Island, watched the mesmerising wildebeest migration across Maasai Mara and seen the sights of the culturally rich Buganda (Kabaka) kingdom in Central Uganda. What a wonder our region is. Seychelles, Paris and Hollywood top my bucket list of places to travel now. What are yours? This September edition is themed around all things glam and lust-worthy. Whether you crave adventure, the fanciest wheels, glamourous candle dinner spots or the finest wine, we have you covered. We also take you into the private world of

celebrities, give you the deets on the latest and affordable fashion trends you can sport, sumptuous recipes you can try in your kitchen, destinations you can visit on a budget and everything magical that is within your reach. You will also meet Serah Ndanu, the fine actress and media personality who is our cover girl this month and delve into the private world of Rev. Lucy Natasha in our exclusive interview. nowing what to wear on a first date can be a difficult task for guys. Your date’s first impression of you could set the tone for what could be the most fabulous time of your life, or a disaster. What do you need to know? Colour coordination: It is important to know colour schemes and which colours work better together. The colour wheel will come through as a great place to start. If you don’t want to experiment, go for monochrome (darker and lighter variants of the same colour) or wear colours that don’t contrast too strongly. You can also choose to go triadic and go for colours that provide contrast between warm and cool or just go bold contrast. No tees: However attached you might be to your Arsenal jersey or polo shirts, kindly, ditch them on this night. It’s all about showing your personality think a plaid well-fitted trendy shirt.

Dark denim: They say dark jeans are timeless and classy. Ensure the pair is well-fitted, and don’t forget to tuck in your shirt for a well-groomed look. If you are not a denim guy, go for chinos and not office pants. Navy and blue chinos will do the trick. 3

4 Loafers: Shoes speak volumes about a man.

For this date, loafers, brown leather or wingtip brogues will work perfectly. Jeans work well with a trendy pair of loafers, however, the general rule is the more formal the pants you wear are, the more formal your shoes should be. Blazer: There is nothing that epitomises style and masculinity in a man’s dressing than a well-fitted blazer. The latest trend is a double breasted jacket. 5

6 Watch: It does not matter how many

gadgets you own that can tell time; a good watch is a must for any man. Invest on a timepiece that compliments your look and speaks class. Belt up? Well, the fitting look has left out the restriction of the belt, but if you choose to belt up, go for a simple piece that does not compete with the look. 7

8 Other accessories: The devil is in the details

and fashion subscribes to that. Skinny silk or novelty printed silk ties lessen that corporate or boardroom serious feel. You can throw in a lapel flower or a pin. However, don’t overdo it.

rendered with hand-coloured spheres, and sculptures made from granulated materials like crushed glass. In his piece, ‘Hourglass Blue,’ he explores the intersection of time, object, and function. The artwork is shaped like and functions as an hourglass. It’s crafted from glass and the interior houses blue sand and two cast objects at either end, a camera on one side and a quartz crystal on the other. He described it as a constant rotation of burial and discovery. His fashion pieces are truly unique going by the pendants he created in collaboration with Dior. The pendant bracelet incorporated Dior’s oblique pattern, a repeated CD motif, and the title of Christian Dior’s biography, Je Suis Couturier. When Nas dropped his latest album a couple of months ago, the iconic rapper got to work with Arsham as he made him a future relic sculpture of a decayed cassette tape with the project’s title. aniel Arsham is a master manipulator. The New York– based artist masterminds large-scale installations that distort perceptions of space and architecture, a practice originating from his college years. His multidisciplinary art combines art, architecture and performance. He became famous at the age of 25 when he cast himself as an archeologist of pop culture. He mines iconic objects; Casio keyboards, cassette tapes, touchtone corded telephones, for the stories they tell us about our past, our present, and our ideas of the future. He continually challenges the notion of what 3-dimensional art should be by creating the illusion of familiar materials or architectural elements performing in unusual ways. Pieces like Corner Knot and Falling Clock are prime examples of this theme. Some of his best-known works include a series of installations that destabilise the solidity of gallery walls, such that they appear to be dripping, folding, oozing, or absorbing furniture. Also featuring among his works are pixelated clouds based on photographs and

Horoscopes - the pulsEr astrologer

WAKE ME UP IN SEPTEMBER

The art of Astrology is an inexact seem to arrive at all your ethodology: The ofwill science, but many my fellow star dream destinations at once! Your following star gazers refuse to admit it.on the stars, which is eyes are signs were read

VIRGO – August 24 – September 23 (Reading at Madonna dei Orto) The first week will be brilliant for you, Virgo, thanks to big Jupiter crossing your constellation. Thereafter, from about Sept 7 – September 15, you might need to pray for some divine intervention, for danger is headed your way. Do not take any unnecessary risks, or travel, in the last three days of September. Libra 24 Sept –October 23 (Reading at Piazzale Roma) On the contrary to Virgo, you are good to go, in so far – pardon pun – travel is concerned this month. We definitely see some kind of contract for you, coming up in the course of September. But we also smell some secret that is being kept from you. Keep your senses about you, dear Libra. SCORPIO – 24 Oct – Nov 22 (Reading at the Ferrovia) Life is a train station for you, as wrote Auma Obama sometime back – and, in September, you

alright; but get your head out of the clouds, and keep feet on the ground. If it’s a windfall, share a little; and stay humble, hombre.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23 – Dec 21). (Reading done at San Zaccaria) Artistically and creatively, this is going to be one of the most brilliant months for you, Sagittarius. So, break the routine, avoid chores and boring people, get into exciting spaces, and exploit that explosive inner fire roaring through your blood with passion, finesse and good intelligence. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 20). (Reading at San Marco Alilaguna) Many things will change for you this month, according to the Capricorn constellation, and to be truthful, some of them will scare the hell out of you. If you are abandoned, it is okay; and if in a stressful situation, it will work out for the better. Just trust the stars, these are great blessings in bad disguises. One day, in the September of 2024, you’ll look back and thank your stars for these ‘awful’ experiences.

ARIES (March 21 – April 20). (Reading at The Lido) There are many good things going your way this month, GOAT, but remember to be grateful – rather than allogant – about these things (although the last quarter of the year may provide a reality check). Control your libido. TAURUS (April 21 – May 21) (Reading at Fondamenta del Preti) Finally, your bull headed persistence has paid off, and you have a hated foe or two at your mercy. Finish them off! Contrary to what many scripts say, when it comes to the stars, forgiveness is for the weak. You are Karma’s Agent this September, Bull, so stampede, gore, and grind the foe into the dust. Peace

GEMINI (May 22 – June 21) (Reading at Campo di Moori) It is very quiet in the Universe corner where Gemini lies, which means your month will be very mild. Some Geminis will opt to chill, while others want to get into big Mischief, just to monkey Life’s boat. CANCER (June 22 – July 23) (Reading done at the Calle dei CinQue) September is full of Sunshine for ye, Cancer. Family and finances will work out for you, a workmate will come through for you – and you’ll join forces to take on the world; someone in authority is quietly pleased with your diligence and work progress – which means good things by December. LEO (July 24 – August 23) (Reading at Murano Colonna) Where there is sunshine, there is ….? No, not rain. There is a shadow – and Cancer has literally stolen Leo’s sunshine this month. There’s no way to say this to make it better – it will be a shitty month for you, Leo! So just hang in there, and wait for Jupiter to get into your constellation (from Virgo) in October.

— tonyadamske@gmail.com

AQUARIUS – 21 Jan – Feb 19 (Reading done at the Rialto Bridge) You will begin the month starting with strong suspicion about either a home, work or business partner. For lucky Aquas, sixty per cent according to our constellation calculations, your fears will be unfounded. In 39 per cent of the cases, they’ll be true. What of the missing 1 percent? The answer lies in the fault-lines of stars.

across a period of 24 days on the island of Venice, because astrology is truly universal. The Astrologer placed a telescope every two days in the locations mentioned below on Venezia. And because the Adriatic Sea, where Venice is shored, has one of the clearest skies in the world (why do you think it’s the world’s most romantic destination)? you will discover, by the end of month, how accurately devastating this Pulser horoscope has been.

PISCES – 20 Feb – March 20 – (Reading done at the Fondamente Nove) You have settled into a comfort zone for a long time, Pisces, and your September Water Sign is screaming for you to become that brave fish out of familiar waters. This is the time for change – whether of wardrobe, partner, job, career or trying business ventures. Go on! Take the plunge.

F

or all petrol heads, motorsport lovers, social animals and lovers of all things vintage, Concours d’Elegance is back to serve your enthusiasm. The event that gathers classic vintage car lovers is in full mode all set to take place in Nairobi on September 29.

Who is eligible? If you have a normal roadworthy car, SUV, 4x4, pick-up, or utility vehicle up to two tons made in 1999, or earlier and any motorcycle made in 2014, or earlier, you are eligible to compete. Buggies and dirt track motorcycles, however, are an absolutely no. Hosted by Alfa Romeo Owners Club of Kenya, this outdoor family fun activity is celebrating its 49th edition and promises to be a classy, elegant and stylish event in Kenya’s social and motoring calendar. The day’s crowning moment is the judging of 70 classic and vintage cars and 40 motorcycles under regulations approved by the Kenya Motor Sport Federation (KMSF). Over the

years, the event has attracted entries from outside Kenya including Argentina, Australia, England, Germany, Uganda and Zimbabwe, among others. In addition to the assessment of the classic and vintage cars and motorcycles, there are also Motor Trade stands, a Motor Sport Arcade, a Classics Car and Motorcycle Sale section, and a collection of old machinery and equipment under the aptly named Heritage Collection section.

Vintage podium affair Thousands of car buffs will make their way there to admire the classic vintage cars and motorcycles gunning for the top prize. Since the first Concours d’Elegance in 1971, an amazing variety of cars have won the top prize; a 1934 Fiat, a 1934 Railton, a 1951 Daimler DB 18 Barker, a 1972 Jaguar E-Type, a 1928 Chevrolet, a 1928 Ford, a 1926 Fiat, a 1934 Alvis Firefly, a 1934 Railton, a 1951 Daimler DB 18 Barker and a 1952 MGTD. Trained judges examine the vehicle

thoroughly rating every component. Only those vehicles that are judged perfect (or very nearly so) in every way, are considered eligible for trophy class. Often the competitiveness of a Concours d’Elegance forces restoration of a vehicle to surpass ‘mint’ condition. These cars are often given upholstery, paint, chrome (or nickel) plating, and mechanical restoration far exceeding that of the car when new. The emphasis is to present a vehicle that is in the same, or better, condition than it was in when it left the production line. No modifications allowed Unless original, modifications are not allowed, and components must be suitable for the year and model of the automobile. Even components or features fitted to automobiles of the same type, but in a different production year or trim level, are not allowed. On top of this, automobiles must be presented in flawless visual condition, as with other Concours-grade cars. Often Concours d’Elegance quality automobiles are not driven, except for short distances from their trailers to the show fields. They are not intended to be used as daily use vehicles and often, are not seen outside of museums or private collections. Even after driving only the short distance to the show field, the car is ‘staged’— errant bits of dirt or pebbles removed from the tire treads, bits of grass or mud wiped from the under-carriage. Competitors delight in driving their superbly prepared cars down the judging line in front of the crowded Racecourse grand stands. The assessment process starts with a ramp and an inspection of the underside. This is followed by separate checks on external finish, interiors and engines.

hen it comes to gourmet dishes, the secret is in presentation. When pressed for time, you could just whip up sweet potatoes and avocado together into a mousse. But not today -today we’re all about fine dining.

Avocado an d Potato Tim Sweet bale Ingredients 2 cups baked sweet potatoes 2 tsp coconut oil ½ tbsp. Italian herbs Salt and black pepper to taste 1 cup quinoa; soaked and rinsed. 2 cups vegetable broth 1 tbsp. lime juice 1 tsp fresh basil; minced ¼ cup finely diced red onion 1 large ripe avocado; cubed 1 large handful of sprouts Small circular bowl

COURTESY

Procedure Heat oven to 200 degrees celcius. In a medium size pot, bring the vegetable broth to a boil and add quinoa. Once boiled, cover and reduce heat to medium/low for 15 minutes or until most of the broth is absorbed. Remove from heat and remove lid, stir and let quinoa cool. Add the quinoa to a large mixing bowl and stir in lime juice, red onion and basil. Season with salt and pepper and set aside. Cube your baked sweet potatoes in a separate mixing bowl and add in melted coconut oil, dried Italian herbs, salt and black pepper. Carefully mix to evenly coat, but be careful not to totally mash sweet

potatoes. Prepare your bowl by lightly greasing the insides with coconut oil. Take of your sweet potatoes and gently pack into the bottom of the bowl. Take of your diced avocado and gently pack it on top of sweet potatoes, then add of your quinoa and gently press it down into the others. Gently flip ramekins upside down onto individual serving plates. The stacks should come loose on their own, but if they don’t, carefully insert a butter knife and slide it all the way around the edges. Top each stack with sprouts and enjoy! — Photo courtesy/ Chez Le Rêve

airtight lids, because the heat from the food will end up steaming the breading and causing the food to get soggy. Also, create texture contrast. Too many soft or crunchy foods on a plate is unappealing, but a combination of both is sinfully delicious.

Food looks most appealing when there’s a high level of contrasting colours. For instance, colour up a bowl of oatmeal with fresh berries and a swirl of amber maple syrup, otherwise it will just look like a plain dish of starch even if it has been dressed with flavourful ingredients. If you’re not sure how to add color, utilise garnishes. Nearly any savoury dish is well-served by sprinkling fresh chives, parsley, dill, or mint. Lemon and lime wedges are more than welcome alongside poultry and seafood dishes.

Cutting veggies in unconventional shapes can make the simple become special. An ice cream scoop can also be used to scoop rice or mashed potatoes. You can cook and serve vegetables, desserts, pot pies and other foods inside unique-shaped dishes to create attractive shapes.

he art of fine dining lies more in sophisticated names, small portions and glamorous presentation. Here are a few tips that will take your simple meals aesthetics go from okay to glam.

Start with colour

Take texture into account

Texture and colour go hand in hand when it comes to how appetising food looks on a plate. If food looks too oily, dry, mushy, tough, or otherwise difficult to chew and swallow, it won’t matter how perfectly colourful it looks. The way you handle food just after it has been cooked, and before it is plated, can really affect the texture. Pasta, for example, should be kept in water or tossed in a bit of oil just after cooking so that it doesn’t start to clump or look dry. Fried foods should not be covered with

Use shapes to your advantage

When in doubt, plate in white

White plates are the standard plating choice for chefs in restaurants all over the world because they don’t compete visually with the food being served. They provide contrast, making colours appear brighter and textures more interesting. Don’t forget to take the rest of the table into consideration, too. Cutlery, glasses and linens will enhance the overall appearance of the dish upon the table.

Small portions

Only fill about two thirds of each plate with food. The rest of the plate should be left empty. The negative space will provide contrast with the food, making it look more appetising. If the plate is loaded with food, it won’t look as visually pleasing. Start plating food in the centre of the dish and work outward from there, so that the food is centred in the middle of the plate.

Rule of odds

Having an odd number of elements on a dish is more visually appealing than having an even number. It creates the impression that a piece of food is being framed by the others. Keep this in mind whether you’re serving different types of food or more than one piece of the same food. Layer foods to add height. Stacking and layering makes your presentation more professional. An easy way to start layering food is to serve the protein on a bed of starch. Aim to make foods look bigger, not smaller. Fluff up your salads, for example, instead of smoothing them down.

Mixology — pulser writer

G

arden punching or simply spiking your drink with herbs is a new trend in the world of mixology, dubbed garden to glass. You don’t have to be a farmer to get herbs for a twilight cocktail mix with a friend - grocery stores got you covered. What’s even better about the new trend is that you don’t have to worry about balancing the ingredients for your cocktail. So, give the mixologist and the books a break on this one. You can experiment without fear of poisoning yourself. Experts point out vodka is a great base spirit to use for an herb-spiked cocktail. You ask why? It is clear alcohol that has no discernible flavour. Spirits like Gin are flavoured with custom blends of botanicals, thus they are hard to mix with your garden plucks as custom blends already in the drink start competing with plucks

rted sta

Experiment with something simple like mixing a few basic leaves with some vodka and lemon juice. I mean, anyone can do it – it’s only three ingredients after all. You can also go the bartender mixologist way; the muddle way. This means throwing a few mint leaves into a glass and then mashing them up with a muddler (like a small version of what we use to make ugali). You can use any wooden spoon in the house. Doing so releases the flavours and aroma from the mint. Talk about adventure in a glass. f

F

rom romantic candle lit dinner moments, birthday parties to glamourous garden weddings, popping champagne is sometimes the magic to a great celebration. However, popping champagne is not like uncorking a bottle of Coca-Cola. It’s an art. If not done well, a flying cork could land someone in a hospital’s emergency room. What are the little secrets of enjoying this wonder that calls the attention of your five senses?

Never uncork champagne with a towel

However classy you try to be, only a clown would resort to uncorking a champagne using a towel. That is how you kill the ritual. Tear and remove the foil wrap that covers the cork then gently untwist the wire cage on top of the cork. Holding the bottle firmly, you can now put a towel over the top of the bottle then slowly work the cork out as you rotate the bottle back and forth with your dominant hand. When your cork is midway, you can decide on how you want to pop it.

Champagne or other sparkling wines should not be served too chill. Nor should it be served at room temperature as that ruins the flavour. Experts advise you serve the sparkling bubbly between 47 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit. In fact, it is not recommended to keep champagne in the fridge, rather a cool, dry place such as a wine cellar.

Serve it in a flute

Have you been to a glam event serving champagne with whatever glass they found lying around? There is a reason why Champagne is served in a flute. When you pour champagne in an ordinary glass, bubbles disappear faster and the flavour is not retained.

Pair champagne with dessert

As much as champagne is mostly served as a welcome drink during parties or glamourous events, it is advisable to serve it with dessert. There’s nothing wrong pairing it with chocolates if you want to throw in a romantic ring. Ecstasy! It’s not a one-man affair Just picture the process of picking up a bottle of champagne, pulling out the flute, going through the rituals of romancing with the neck, pouring it and watching it bubble! Sexy! Ecstasy! Champagne is a celebration, not a one-man affair.

rev.Natasha: I Am getting married soon Finally, jet setting televangelist Rev. Lucy Natasha, founder and overseer of Prophetic Latter Glory Ministries International sets the record straight

alking into her Nairobi city office at Nanak House, I am greeted by smooth sounds of Gospel music. With a warm smile, Princess, Lucy Natasha’s personal assistant ushers me into a room where four other guests are waiting to see the televangelist. Through the thin walls, one can hear Natasha’s voice as she prays; loud and intense, as if exorcising demons. If I was in any other office, I would have felt terribly anxious, but I am in an evangelist’s office, and this could easily be par for the course. 10 minutes later, the door opens and Natasha’s photographer walks in. Through the open door, I see Natasha bidding farewell the lady she had been in prayer with in the inner room. “You will never be the same again,” Natasha says to the young woman and gives her a hug before she turns her attention to us. “Welcome to our little office,” she says welcomingly. “I haven’t had many interviews with journalists so this is one of the few ones.” She leads me into an office; a magnificent tastefully furnished space that speaks of quiet authority and power. She takes a seat behind the table and fanning behind her is

the Kenyan flag and certificates. Of prominence is the United Graduate College and Seminary International certificate received after recently acquiring a Doctorate in Christian Leadership. “So now you are Dr Lucy? Congratulations,” I say, to break the ice and

set the interview in motion. “Thank you. I am humbled,” A while back, the evangelist was the subject of media buzz with news that she had bought a private jet. She had also made unprecedented strides with her wildly growing city ministry, her live streamed TV sermons, the Oracle fleet of state-of-the-art cars and dashing bodyguards. Not to forget the buzz around who she is dating. Media buzz aside, who is Rev Lucy Natasha?” “By the election of grace, I am a woman of God. God called me into ministry. I am based in Nairobi where we have Miracle Mondays an interdenominational service now on its second year. I have been in ministry for the last 12 years as a travelling televangelist,” she says. “God told me that He has called me his mouth piece. I speak His voice hence the word Oracle. He said he was making me a voice to the nations. Since, I have been in over 50 nations as our ministry is one with a global vision. I am also an author of books,” she informs me. Sounds a bit rehearsed and I want to know how she has got many young people

JESUS WOULD ALSO BE USING A JET “I was born and raised in Mathare slums and back then, I had a fierce stammer. When I was six, my mother invited some people for dinner and that is when one of the guests pointed at me and said I was set for a great calling. It was at that time that my tongue loosened and I never stammered again. It was a defining encounter,” she says. The rather charming televangelist has also been vocal about her being single and getting ready for her Mr Right. As a matter of fact, she has been loud on matters romance, sex and marriage more so through one of her five books; Before You Say I Do. And rumours has it that she could be getting hitched soon. “I hope to get married one day. Singlehood is a season and not a stigma. The same way marriage is a season. I will settle down with a God fearing man. One day, I will get to marry my friend and get two children. That season, I feel, in the spirit its very near,” she reveals. She takes a short breath and stews for

a minute in thought. This must be a matter she takes seriously. “I honestly feel that this season is near. I feel the spirit telling me it is about time.” Her other books include Favour the Game Changer, God’s Leading Lady, Every Problem has an Expiring Date and Touching Heaven Through Prayer. And talking about touching heaven, does she really have a private chopper? “I don’t know why people make it a big deal when a preacher gets a private jet and they don’t do the same when a politician does the same. The Kingdom of God needs money and speed if we are to reach out fully to this generation.. I trust that if Jesus was preaching during these days, he would be using such facilities,” she concludes. And from that, I guess I can draw my conclusions.

converted into her ministry. Why every campus and college is inviting her for a visit. “I am called and tailor-made for this generation. That is why I can’t use old methods to reach out through my ministering. This generation is different from any other we have seen before. That is why we have so much social media presence and also why our services are streamed live,” she responds. “During my free time, I do visit colleges and campuses. I mingle with young people and let them know that salvation is not for the old neither is it a boring thing. That I am a woman of God does not mean I don’t have to look good. I do preach, pray and slay. Salvation should be fun,” she says. And the bodyguards? “I hear people talking about me walking with bodyguards. I don’t have bodyguards. I have spiritual sons and daughters who operate in the protocol team. They are stewards,” she remarks with a wide smile. She is easy going and amiable. It is easy to see why people are enamoured by her. She engages you and leaves you wanting to know more about her. And she acknowledges that; noting that she has learned to respect and accept people as they are. She says no one is perfect, that its only by God’s grace that one can be saved.

“Love is not enough for a relationship… Gifts, great looks and affirmations can make one fall in love with the wrong person.” 28

“I

speak to a vibrant young generation that is itching to know the truth about sex. If we don’t guide them, they will find answers from the wrong place,” Rev Lucy Natasha tells Pulser. “Personally I am single and looking forward to getting married to a friend someday. So why not share some insight with my fellow young people on the realities about relationships, romance and sex,” she challenges. Natasha notes that love is more than gifts, great looks and affirmations. And in her book ‘Before You Say I Do (Falling in Love Without Falling into Trouble) she gives eight pointers

september 2019 pulser magazine

on how to identify true love: Sexual feelings aren’t love The fact that two people have sexual feelings towards each other does not mean they are in love. Sexual attraction comes at first sight, but love develops gradually. For instance, you cannot love someone you do not know, but you can be sexually attracted to a stranger at any time. The feelings or desire for sex does not always indicate you are truly in love. Having sexual feelings is not sinning, it is what you decide to do with it that could turn into sin. Having sex while not married is not called dating. It is fornication. Sex is not love and

1

love is not sex. Enjoying premarital sex together does not mean you are in love. True love does not delight in iniquity Does your lover love the Lord? Does he rejoice in purity or his joy is only in sexual immorality? If his joy is about premarital sex, I doubt he loves you. Maybe all he wants is sex and has no intention or desire of taking you to the altar. Commitment to love should involve commitment to marry, not just sex.

2

45

or her to suit your purpose. If she is too dark, you want her to tone or bleach her body? If she if fat, you want her to slim down? If he or she does not love your career, you want him or her to change? These are indications that you are not in true love. True love accepts. It is unconditional. It knows both the weaknesses and strong points of the partner, but he or she is ready to accept knowing fully well he or she is not complete too. Nobody is perfect. Getting married to someone that accepts you is a strong foundation for a great marriage.

COURTESY

man or woman that is not ready to work or that has no vision. Do not make partnership with such people in the name of love. Never marry a liability. Love seeks to give not receive.

7

Trust – Believes all things True love believes all things because there is absolute trust in the other party. It is almost impossible to love somebody you do not trust. If you do not trust that lady, stop wasting time with her. If that man does not trust you, it shows he is not in love with you.

8 36

True love is beyond feelings. It is a commitment: Real love is a commitment; it is more than a beautiful feeling. A commitment is a choice backed with tangible actions. God commanded husbands to love their wives. He did not command them to have romantic feelings towards them, but to be committed to them. Having a beautiful feeling towards someone does not necessarily mean you are in love, it might be infatuation. The best way to know whether your romance is real love or infatuation is through the test of time. Infatuation always starts fast, great and hot with lots of highs. Real love on the other hand starts slowly. It is usually a friendship first. True love grows with the passing of time but infatuation fades away sooner rather than later. Acceptance You cannot claim to love somebody and all you want to do is change everything about him

Respect It is ridiculous when a man claims to love you, but has no respect for you. He treats you however he wants and even embarrasses you publicly. In this, you are deceiving yourself. There is honour in love. True love is not abuse, uses choice words and gives due respect to the other party’s opinion and beliefs.

Giving True love involves giving and emphasises generosity by always asking, “What can I give you?” Infatuation and lust emphasises receiving by always asking, “What can I get from you?” If you are in a relationship because of what you can gain from it, you are not in love. If you are involved with somebody that is only interested in collecting from you, then he or she is not in love with you. Flee from parasitic lovers. Parasitic lovers are common among ladies. Lately though, men seem to have picked up this bad habit. Never marry a

Faithfulness Love is faithful. You cannot say you are in true love with somebody and still keep an extra ‘tyre’ somewhere. True love needs no extra ‘tyres’ because it is faithful. A man that is keeping the two of you together at the same time and is telling you that you are the one he loves and that he is only deceiving the other lady is actually deceiving you. Love never double dates.

“Y

ou have no business going into marriage if you are not sexually capable,” Rev. Lucy Natasha says, in the second chapter of her hot selling book ‘Before You Say I Do’. Singling out sexual preparation as part of the 10 points one must observe before committing themselves to a partner, she says: “Do not think of getting married if you are impotent. Address the issue first. Marriage involves sex. Do not live in deceit.” And there is more juice in this must read. Candidly, she exposes the kind of men (husbands) and women (wives) one must avoid if you are up for a serious affair:

4 2 the thrill of a new chase.

This kind of man is not husband material.

The mama’s boy There is a category of men that are so dependent on their mothers in matters of decisions, opinions, such that when you marry such a man, you end up taking the second place as his mother has to approve of everything in the relationship. Once you are married to such a man, he will want you to do everything his mother did for him simply because that’s all he knows. He has lived like that all his life. A mama’s boy will always want to please his mother at your expense. Mama’s opinions and manner of doing things will be your home standards and you should not deviate from any of them. While a man should love and honour his mother, he should know where to draw the line and not allow his mother to come between him and his spouse.

a critical role in a relationship, they can also be the reason for a relationship to be broken. There are those women who do not care about you; they are only interested in what you can do for them. She is simply a taker and a user. The gold digger will sometimes fake she cares for you only to position herself to squeeze what she can from you. In every conversation, she will be talking about money. The gold digger will change her emotions at the slightest appearance of decrease of finances. Slay Queens, as gold-diggers are also called, want to know what a man drives, while real Queens want to know what drives a man. Slay Queens want to know where a man lives while real Queens want to know what lives in you. Slay Queens ask what’s the size of your television while real Queens want to know the size of your vision. Avoid the gold digger.

5 1

The flirt (The Solomon husband) The Solomon kind of guy is a flirt, a heartbreaker and polygamous in nature. As funny as it sounds, women love such men because pleasing women is Solomon’s expertise. There is an initial excitement to having a man who likes flirting as it seems he can keep you company and he is a darling of many. A relationship with someone who enjoys flirting begins off in such high energy and passion that you imagine you will always be like that. What follows are moments of despair as you start realising you are not exclusive to your man. Such kind of men will pamper you with all manner of ideas to ensure that you are emotionally attached while on the other side, they are doing the same to others. They will manipulate you emotionally so that you see how sweet it is being with them. They will use your need of acceptance to emotionally blackmail you into falling for them even when you catch them red handed flirting with other ladies. He is smooth in talking, and readily offers adventure, new beginnings and enjoys

3

The controller This kind of man is the one who will not give you space to be yourself. Instead of celebrating and appreciating your uniqueness, he will want to control every aspect of your life. He will make so much effort in wanting to know every small detail about you. He is the kind who will call every minute to know where you are and what you are doing and with who. He supervises all your activities even in the house and wants his opinion followed in all matters. Such kind of controlling men should be avoided at all cost and if you are in such a relationship, you should cut ties immediately. The gold digger woman It is said there are times when a guy seeks after a lady’s heart yet some ladies’ eyes are firmly fixed on the pocket. While finances play

The Bethsheba wife (woman) The Bethsheba wife is a natural beauty, but no man can claim ownership of her. Men fight over her. Her beauty makes men go to war. Ordinary men and kings crave her attention. Many men lose their lives by simply trying to be her only husband. The upside of her is that if her potential and personality as well as character are well managed and channeled by a strong man, the Bethsheba woman has the potential of being a great partner. This is the kind of person who has unbalanced self-confidence. She thinks so highly of herself and beauty that men should count themselves lucky if they are dating her. She craves a partner who makes her feel far more important than she is, and wants him to always celebrate her as though she were the queen. She will crave attention and want all the focus in a conversation or decision to be on her. Such ladies are prone to pride and arrogance. Do you want her in your house?

T

he year was 2010. Serah Ndanu Teshna was busy pursuing her studies at the University of Nairobi when opportunity came knocking. Eight years on, she recalls with nostalgia the series of activities that opened doors to her celebrated film and TV career. That Tuesday morning, a friend had asked her to accompany her for pre-auditions for a new TV series in town. Additionally, and like any other campus girl, a lunch promise of pizza on ‘Terrific’ Tuesday was enough to convince her to get off school. The friend was meeting the producer of the soon to be filmed Nairobi Law TV series. After the meeting, the producer invited Serah to attend auditions at Vision Plaza, Nairobi. It all sounded like a big joke, but a joke she was all too willing to run with. “I recall getting there and finding over 50 girls who had come to audition for the same role. I didn’t think I had a chance knowing I had never auditioned for a serious role like this before,” she says. “Nairobi Law had all the finest thespians in town; from Pinky Gelani-Raj to Raymond Wafula. Their energies were out of this world and I didn’t think I would qualify. I recall asking for a washroom break where I cried my eyes out. That is when Raymond called me back and asked me to try one more time. I gave it a last shot and got the job.” We are hardly into our interview, but this introductory chat already signals one of those interactive and effortless interviews every writer seeks. It is our first meeting in months. In fact, the last time we met was last year at a grand Coca-Cola event, where she played host. So much has happened since. She is no longer a morning show host on TV. Rumour has it that she was poached by the competition; Citizen TV. This she denies. Word around town is also that she is off the singles club. “Something to eat?” she offers, looking through the menu in the busy lounge. She is not one for salads and sides. She orders a full course meal, and goes on to explain that she takes her meals seriously. “Gym and weigh ins are not my thing. I eat well. It never bothers me,” she laughs heartedly, dismissing my attempts to get more deets on that. “I bet we will get to that one. Let’s eat first.” For Serah, some things simply come naturally. Like being on stage. At the age of five, she was already acting in church. Back at Phime Academy in Western Kenya where she attended her primary school, she got a lead role to guide her school into the drama festivals finals. By the time she was getting to Loreto High School, she had almost perfected the art of drama. While there, she scooped the Best Actress Award during the national schools’ drama finals. Her mother, a drama teacher wasn’t so keen on her daughter’s ambition. Besides, who took acting as a serious career back then? By the time she was getting settled into Nairobi Law, her acting talent was evident to all, and thus followed other roles, notably playing Alice, the lead role in the The Rugged Priest. This role scooped her the Kalasha Award for Best Lead Actress. The following year, she won an

coverstory award for Best Lead Actress in the Kenya Film Festival Awards. She was no longer an upcoming actress, rather the talk of town as the actress to beat. “Winning the Kalasha award back then was like scooping an Oscar. I was on top of the world.” But then, she reveled in her win for too long. “I relaxed. I told myself ‘they’ would look for me. For two years, I didn’t do any acting. That was a big mistake. I later realised I should have used the award to knock down doors. I did not,” she laments. “The fact that I disappeared from the scene meant people forgot all about me and I had to start from scratch again. You have to work 10 times harder because you also realise new kids have taken up the space; the likes of Pierra had come up with better ideas. The minute you feel you’ve made it, that’s when you are getting started,” she confesses of her gigantic toil to get back her stride. “Nobody is one single thing in life. I have learned to build a brand that is not confined in one thing. Since then, I have learned to always market myself. The fact is, there is the danger in going off the main thing you are known for as much as you do the rest. You can sing, act and do film in one life. I always tie it together and I was set for all,” she says. Two years later, her career got a reprieve as she hit yet another big one. This time round, she locked a main casting role as Miriam in Sumu la Penzi, a drama and romance soap produced by Dorothy Ghettuba Pala, the current manager of Netflix International Originals. Sumu la Penzi, the Kenya-Swahili melodrama was a big deal. It was among the first local drama shows to get aired on Maisha Magic East. Also taking major roles alongside her was Avril, Neomi Ng’ang’a and Joyce Maina, enviable actresses who are still in high demand across the region. “As Mariam, I was this sexy, classy girl who was also a quite the player, dating three men at a go. Mariam was the envy of every girl in town. She was the master of the game,” she says laughing. “I have never been that person in real life.” Career wise, she was back on top. When KTN came calling to have her host The Skin Therapy Show, she knew her other love, TV hosting, was the next frontier to beat. “By this time, I was involved in many TV productions as well as commercials and I guess I was set for the next challenge,” she says of her TV debut.

At this juncture, the food has arrived, and Serah happily digs in, focusing entirely on her plate. Quitting TV The sassy 30-year-old shocked many recently when she, without warning, quit her lucrative TV job at K24. After ruling the airwaves and leading one of the most watched morning shows, Serah called it quits about three months ago throwing bloggers into a frenzy as they tried to anticipate what her next move was. It is only now, with me, she is letting her fans into what really happened. “I enjoyed Alfajiri even though at first I was a bit scared of hosting a live TV show. I had a big following and I connected with fans. Sometimes I miss them. Besides K24 is home,” she opens up. “However, the truth is that TV can be so exhausting both physically and mentally. I had to be up by 3am and in studio say 4am ready to start. You can get so occupied with the job that you have no time to catch up with friends or even family. It can get real crazy.” “When people see you they think of all the glamour. They want you to keep smiling regardless what you are going through. Now I understand why celebrities go through depression while no one seems to think they are stressed. You can easily lose it,” Serah confesses. And so she felt she owed it to herself to quit. “The thing about TV again is that it has an expiry date. I have learned you should not overdo your stay. Look for exposure and good networks as well as good mentors. Never be afraid to let the rope go once you feel it’s time to make a transition. That’s what I did. I knew it was a time to make a switch,” she quips boldly. That however doesn’t mean that she wouldn’t take up another TV job someday. “Making transitions is a risky business. But once you decide to do it, don’t regret the move. Making this change wasn’t easy. You need to have supporters and work with people whom you grow with in the journey,” she advices. Becoming executive producer Before she even got into TV, she had set herself a timeline. Two years at K24 was her plan. She had already started her next project before she even left TV. She was working on being an executive producer for her soon to be launched series. “Everything is falling into place as planned and my content is about to go on air. I have been working on a drama and an educative youth show, which puts the reality of all things youth into perspective. It has taken me three years to put this out. I have a team that has been working on this and the most exciting thing is that the cast is amazing. It is something as good as what you watch on Netflix,” she tips. Serah had also started working on her emceeing skills and seeking out challenging acting roles. “I was hosting Nigerian author, Arese Ugwu, who had come to my show to promote her new book, Smart Money Woman as she did her African tour. After reading the book, I told her she could make a book to screen adaptation and guess what; after she went back, she decided to make a TV Turn to pgs 38 & 39

series and called me up to give me a role. I went to Nigeria and worked with the team – the series will be on Netflix soon,” Serah says, terming 2019 as one of her greatest years. “Since that production, we’ve been discussing all matters film both in Kenya and Nigeria and whatever is about to come out of it is mindboggling. I have been working on coming back to film as an executive producer and this is it. Being in Nigeria was an eye opener. Nollywood is huge and it is amazing seeing how corporates support the creative industry. The experiences are amazing and film players get good pay and respect for the roles they play,” she tells Pulser noting the Kenyan industry still has a long way to go. Hosting Miss Intercontinental in Philippines It was not so long ago the acting beauty pulled yet another first after it emerged she was hosting an international beauty pageant; Miss Intercontinental in Philippines. But obviously, not everyone was gracious about her wins. “I saw an article that was written the other day in connection with the Miss Intercontinental job in Philippines. Someone was trying to paint a picture that I slept with someone to get it. When you see ridiculous stories like these, you feel robbed of your accomplishment,” she says. She takes a sip of water, takes a deep breath and sighs. She is clearly still upset by the talk. “These are things that come with what I do. If people are only saying good things about you, there is something you are not doing well. People must talk about you if there is something happening to your life,” remarks Serah. So how did she get the international gig anyway? “The organisers of the pageant launched it in Kenya three years ago. They approached me to emcee it and as they were taking the Kenyan girl to Egypt, I asked if I could go along and do the red carpet interviews as part of my international exposure as an emcee and host. During the last day of the rehearsals the girl who was supposed to host pulled out due to some complications and I was asked if I could step in, which I did. That’s how the directors gave me the job. Soon came the announcement they were taking me to Philippines to host the finals. It got me into a whole new level and pushed me towards my biggest dream as a host.” It did not end there. Through the connections she made, Serah landed another job with the United Nations as a moderator during a conference on Universal Health. Another gig came calling in Rwanda, then Coca-Cola too came knocking. She was indeed going global. Networks, she adds, are important. “I have mentors like Raymond Wafula, Yvonne Okwara and Jeff Koinange whom I look up to. One needs mentors in their field to leverage their brand.”

On price of success… It is really heartbreaking to see some people keeping on following you. I mean, you are here trying to build an empire and someone simply wants to keep on sniffing what you are up to. But again, you have to be ready to pay the price for success and so when the challenges come, you must face them. At the same time, you should not let your ego stop you from knocking on those doors.

On her biggest fan… Mum has grown to become such a treasured friend. She has even joined social media to see what is going on with my life. She is now my biggest fan. We discuss everything. We are very open. I think that is what how family is supposed to be. On cyber bulling… People will always try to attack you. If they can’t injure your talent, they will come to injure those close to you. I always keep family and other happy moments private as they should be. The people close to me, whether family or significant others are not in media. They are my sanctuary. They are the ones I should run to would the madness start. Besides, whatever would be said about me affects them. I wouldn’t want anything negative affecting my family if I was in a position to avoid it. On Kenya’s entertainment industry… I think we command such a rich industry that has great potential. However, it is our sometimes mediocre thinking that keeps us moving backwards. A few years ago, Tanzanians and Nigerians used to come here to benchmark. Now tell me, why don’t we have a single movie on Netflix yet we have people working there? Media houses want to control what people should watch. That is sad. They think we all want to watch comedy. Can we try to be diverse? Look at these young people watching Netflix. Aren’t they discussing the gay stories and drugs we are pretending they know nothing about? Who is the future of the film industry? Who is making decisions for the young people? If people are watching The Churchill Show, why don’t we have more of such content coming from within?

his September will be exactly 23 years since legendary rapper Tupac Shakur died. No one can deny that Shakur transformed hip-hop in a way not any other rapper has and his muscular, tattooed, bald-headed, bandana-clad frame is synonymous with hip hop. With his influence, Shakur also played a divisive figure. Rapper Chuck D of Public Enemy called him “the James Dean of our

times”. But to others, he was a foulmouthed thug who reaped what he sowed by explicitly threatening his rivals on records. Shakur who was born a week after his mother successfully defended herself in a U.S. federal court where she was acquitted of 156 counts of conspiracy against the U.S. government, narrated the turbulent and powerful details of his relationship with his mother in in the song “Dear Mama”, including his mother’s addiction to cocaine. He became one of the most identifiable figures in the West Coast scene centered on Suge Knight’s Death Row Records. He had brushes with the law and even went to prison in 1995 on sexual assault charges. The big beef The arguably most notorious hip hop beef of all time between the East Coast and West Coast rappers pitted Tupac Shakur and Christopher Wallace (The Notorious B.I.G.) head on. They became two of hip-hop’s most notable icons amid

an infamous rivalry that continues to hold the attention of fans more than two decades after their deaths. Tupac Shakur also known as Makaveli endures as one of hip-hop’s most iconic figures and its most powerful enigma. There is no other artist who better illuminates hip-hop’s fault lines between regional pride and mainstream success, and the struggle to transcend beyond humble origins while honoring the streets that raised them. His wayward, conflicting expressions of pride, militancy and gangster-ism resonates

in a world when black men and women celebrate their heritage and collectively organise against a racist community, yet are also cautious to protect themselves from each other. Tupac was a master storyteller and one of his most lasting and prominent legacies was his ability to speak about various social issues in his music masterfully. And it’s because of his musical fearlessness that his legacy lives on. His life was a tapestry of often contradictory images: the concerned young father cradling his son in the video for “Keep Ya Head Up”; the angry rapper spitting at cameras as they swirled around his 1994 trial for sexual assault. He also seemed to predict his own demise when the “I Ain’t Mad at Cha” video, released weeks after his death, depicting him as an angel in heaven. Timeless albums Pac’s first album, 2Pacalypse Now, was released in 1991 and featured hits like “Trapped” and “Brenda’s Got a Baby.” His next album, Striclty 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z., followed up in 1993 highlighted by “Keep Ya Head Up” and “I Get Around.” Me Against The World followed in 1995 which included the Platinum single “Dear Mama.” Shakur’s fourth album was All Eyez on Me, released the next year, in 1996, headlined by “California Love,” “I Ain’t Mad At Ya” and “How Do You Want It?” On September 7, 1996, Tupac was gunned down on a Las Vegas street following a Mike Tyson fight. Pac spent the next six days fighting for his life in the

Tupac

hospital before he tragically passed on September 13. He was only 25. Pac was working on his fifth album, The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory at the time of his death. It was posthumously released two months later featuring singles “To Live and Die in L.A.” and “Hail Mary.” When Pac signed with the Death Row label, he became an enemy of the Crips gang. The night of the shooting, Tupac, the elder Knight, and others got into a brawl in the lobby of the MGM Grand casino with Crip member Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson. Police sources said that after the Tyson fight, Anderson and other South Side Crips sought revenge for the attack. Shakur was in the passenger seat of Knight’s (Marion “Suge” Knight, the head of Death Row Records) car on September 7, 1996, when an unknown gunman shot him four times. His murder remains unsolved and some of his fans refuse to believe the heavily tattooed rapper is dead. Rumors have circulated that he faked his own death. Over the years, there have been numerous sightings from people who say they saw Tupac. Most have been in Cuba but there have been some in the U.S. Conspiracy theorists and those who want to believe the rap music icon is still alive will welcome Knight’s claim about him being in Malaysia. Others though believe the younger Knight is just out for attention and knows nothing about what really happened to Pac. Sure, his work was complicated—and problematic—at times, but that doesn’t negate the fact that he was talking about real life things that other mainstream musicians from other genres would too often ignore. The late rap god continues to live on in the memories of many. Whether posthumously popping up in recent musical masterpieces or frequently aired films like the 1993 classic Poetic Justice, he has claimed a permanent spot in hip-hop’s hall of fame. — Sources; Internet

They are incredibly welcoming to visitors. Mostly from the Giriama and Bajuni tribes, they will make one feel at home and never want to leave. The Ruins of Gede will give you a lesson in history your primary school teacher couldn’t possibly give and leave you feeling a sort of divine connection with the land. It lies 105 kilometres from Mombasa and 15 kilometres from Malindi town. The village lies between pristine beaches and lush tropical rainforest and two protected areas; Watamu Marine National Park and Arabuko Sokoke National Park. Back in the 16th century, Watamu was a remote Swahili outpost for trading dhows at Gedi, the historical ruins which can still be visited today and are a National Museum site. Since then, Watamu has remained calm and largely natural and underdeveloped. It’s a tourists’ haven known for its relaxed and chilled lifestyle with visitors enjoying the pleasures of the long, white sandy beaches. Its protected natural reserves are home to unique species of the Indian Ocean and the coral reefs are breathtaking. The creeks and the forests and the birds add to the charm. That said, it isn’t just about history and nature. Visitors have a broad range of choices when it comes to accommodation options. From Turtle Bay Beach Club, Ocean Sports Resort, Sun Palm Beach Resort, Mida Creek Eco Camp, Echo Villas Watamu, the list is rich and endless. re these the world’s most glamorous locations? The world is full of locations where those who really “live” hobnob as they “chop” their time and money. We have sampled seven of such locations. This list is by no means exhaustive. In fact, feel free to add to this list if you feel there is a place so full of glamour that our keen eye did not spot. Better still, tell us about your experience there.

Sirai House, Laikipia

Charity begins at home and whoever said Kenya has no glamorous locations has not been to Sirai House. There might be good reasons why you may not have been part of the guest list here. You just don’t just wake up and head to Sirai House just because you can. The house, tucked on the highest point in Borana Conservancy in Laikipia is owned by British billionaire, Michael Spencer who spent part of his life in East Africa. However, it is not the owner that makes the house tick. Sirai House is among the few places on earth where one is booked, not based on the size of the pocket, but the depth of your character. In short, the travel agency that handles Sirai House invites you to spend more than Sh1.6 million a day here, at least in a group of six for a minimum of three nights. Laikipia is known as the millionaire’s

playground. Now you know why.

Anse Lazio, Seychelles,

It is touted as one of the best beaches in the world. The postcard scenery and clear azure waters are to die for. While you might say a beach is no more than sun, sand, and water, Anse Lazio beats them through sheer beauty and tranquility. Located in an island that some say (wrongly though) that may have been a part of the original Garden of Eden, Anse Lazio attracts renowned celebrities to sunbath in utter luxury and peace of mind that lack in the many crowded beaches in other parts of the world. It is here that I lost myself, and my phone, on a recent visit.

Dubai, UAE

Monaco This is the playground for the wealthy, famous and influential persons on the planet. Sandton City, South Africa Sandton City, the up market business district north of Johannesburg always amazes visitors due to her unique transformation. Known as “Africa’s richest Square mile,” It makes the rest of Africa look like one big village through its sheer infrastructure. The 300,000 inhabitants of the greater Sandton area include some of the world’s top business executives. The world calls them ULTRA HIGH NET WORTH INDIVIDUALS (caps a must). This group consists of the shopaholics of this world where they treat the high-end Nelson Mandela Square like your nearby kibanda. The 300 stores, include international chains and market leaders like Prada, Loius Vuitton, Giorgio Armani and Gucci, a large variety of restaurants and coffee shops ranging from quick-stop fast-food chains to first-class establishments that offer some of the finest styles and creations in the country. Visit the Butcher Shop and Grill and sample any of the 30,000 collections of wine bottles in the cellar – one of the largest such collection anywhere in the world!

Milan, Italy Are you a fashion geek? Then Milan should be on your itinerary. Via Montenapoleone is the street where you should spend a good chunk of your time, getting lost in all the designer boutiques located here. This is the city where any fashion model worth her (usually her) salt will have a photo shoot. For those that love all things grand, then Milan, with Leonardo da Vinci and quaint architecture to show, the city will not disappoint. Diani, Kenya We begin and end with Kenya and just had to throw in one of our best in terms of beach experiences. You may have been to Diani numerous times and may even take it for granted. But did you know that Diani has some of the most globally-acclaimed beaches? The soft white sands and pleasant weather most of the year makes it a haven for high-flying honchos. Next time you step into Diani, know that you are in good company of the world’s finest.

ADD ON SOME GLITTER Glitter comes close second after diamonds, a girl’s best friend. Adding some glitter or heavily pigmented shimmery eye shadow will take your glam look to the next level. Take an eye shadow brush and before placing any eyeshadow on the brush, spray it with some finishing spray. This will act as glue for when you apply the shimmery shadow on your lid. It will give the shadow a bolder appearance. Tip: Keep your lips subtle when doing a bold eye look. HIGHLIGHTING An intense highlight is a must have when it comes to glam make up. Add on the highlighter to the highest points to your face for the perfect result. Add on a little to your brow bone {above the eye} and cupid’s bow (upper lip). You will love the end result.

CONTOURING A lot of emphasis has been put by beauty experts on the importance of contouring. Contouring requires skill and a whole lot of perfection. For perfect contouring results, start at the temple {side of the head behind the eye} then to the middle of the cheek and finally at the end of the chin area.

FAKE LASHES With fake eye lashes comes a whole lot of drama but what better way to complete your glam look by putting a pair on? You are at liberty to have lashes of your choice on as long as they bring out the best of you. You need to pick lashes that you love, that you feel your look embodies. THE LIP They say the best accessory one can ever have is a smile. If you are however looking for the perfect glammed up look, it is advisable to add on a bold lip, one that matches your skin tone. It is no news that you should choose one that matches your entire outfit but whatever you pick, ensure it complements you.

Conk is back

a

ne of the trendiest hairstyles for men right now is the Conk. Don’t know what that is? Look

this

around you. Conk hairstyles were the rage back in the day, and are only making a comeback now. A chemical treatment is done to slightly straighten the textured hair before styling. It is said that the chemical solutions back then were so lethal that they would cause chemical burns on one’s head if not done right. That is not to say the products used presently are harmless as they can cause just as much damage if not used properly. Besides, Conk hairstyles are part of our inheritance. Walking down memory lane, Conk hair was a big fashion statement before the Civil Rights movement era in America. It was around this time that the black movement leaders like Malcolm X asserted that men with African-textured hair should not be forced to relax their hair if they were not interested. And thus, sporting natural kinky styles became more popular amongst the affluent, urban African-American men. Today though, Pulsers are relaxing their hair to fit their particular Conk style. It gives off a cool retro vibe that sets one apart.

Tabata today, hot body tomorrow; let’s talk about the longest, most rewarding 20 seconds of your day.

I

f you think 20 seconds goes by fast, then you’ve never done Tabata. The exercise programme takes 45 minutes with each set running for 20 seconds. Sounds like a walk in the park compared to other full body workout exercises, right? Wrong! Tabata is a high-intensity interval training style that gives incredible results. It burns calories fast lowering your body-fat percentage. The basic rules are easy to remember: 20 seconds of work, followed by 10 seconds of rest then repeat. The 10 seconds rest intervals force the body system to keep on gear and before full recovery, you’re back on the session. It’s not an exercise for workout novices as one has to push themselves really hard. The results are tremendous, leading to significant aerobic and anaerobic gains. Most Tabaka moves include burpee, push-up, lunge, kettlebell swing, dumbbell squat, sprints and rowing.

anchester United’s second English Premier League game of the season against Wolves was a heartbreaker of sorts. Not so much for the undeserving and disappointing 1-1 tie, but rather for a missed penalty and the follow-up results. With fans frustrated, a postgame onslaught of racist taunts was heaped on Pogba, who failed to convert from the spot, with social media going on overdrive against the French international. This incident was by far the biggest in a new season that has seen big names face online racial abuse. Manchester United as well other supporters condemned the abuse with the club vowing to take action. “We will work to identify the few involved in these incidents and take the strongest course of action available to us,” the team said. “We also encourage social media companies to take action in these cases.” Twitter representatives agreed to meet with Manchester United Kick It Out and any other civil society stakeholders interested in hearing about the proactive work Twitter is doing to address online racist abuse towards certain footballers in the UK. In April, professional footballers in England staged a 24-hour boycott of social media platforms accusing the platforms for failing to take measures to respond to online racism acts. It

will be remembered that during the England’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro, a number of players among then Danny Rose were racially assaulted. Again in April, Juventus striker Moise Kean suffered racial ridicule during a Serie A match against Cagliari. But it has been Manchester City star Raheem Sterling who has been pushing the campaign since he was racially abused during a game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. According to anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out, reports of racist abuse in English football rose by 43 per cent - from 192 to 274 – during the 2016/2017 season. The statistics have it that reports of all forms of discrimination in professional and grassroots football increased by 32 per cent to 422, up from 319 during 2017/2018 season.

The Champions’ W race

BOOTS & BALLS - fred kagonye

hen the new meets the old in Champions League, who will have the say in shaping up the season? Here is our take: Spain

Lionel Messi: In his address to the Catalonia faithfuls, once again he promised to bring back the Champions League to Camp Nou. He is motivated to go all the way and edge Ronaldo in winning the Ballon D’Or and the December gala results will mean just how much he will be willing to go to win the competition. Antoine Griezmann: The new signing is itching to show what he can do to justify Barcelona’s price tag on his head. At Atletico, he helped get them to the finals and also in the Europa league win. Luis Suarez: His away scoring form in the competition has been awful, but we can never really write him off. Real Madrid Eden Hazard: He made headlines when he switched to the club from Chelsea. With Zidane at the helm, expectations are high that he will replicate the success he had in his first stint at the club. In Hazard, Zidane has his man set for the big occasions. Luka Jovic: He carried his former side Eintracht Frankfurt to the semis of the Europa League last season. He is the hot shot striker who almost ruined Giroud’s party as the competition’s top scorer. He won’t have it easy as Karim Benzema has improved on his scoring, but nonetheless whenever he is called upon, he will definitely be key in Real’s quest. Luka Modric: He has been one of the stars in the Real domination of the competition. Modric needs no introduction over what he can do on the pitch and once again the money will be on him to boss the midfield in Real’s quest.

60

Atletico Madrid Joao Felix: The most expensive teenager in the world has been phenomenal at Benfica and at Atletico. Felix has a lot to prove the doubters wrong because of his price tag, but he has shown he is ready for the stage. Jan Oblak: He has been the reason why Atletico has been successful. He has won the golden gloves domestically and in the European competitions and this season it goes without saying that Oblak will need to be at his best for any silverware that the club will win. Diego Costa: The bully himself is the one to watch. He is known to create the space and chances to hog all the attention.

Valencia Kevin Gameiro: The French striker has had quite a journey to find himself in Valencia. He is one to depend on. His times at Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and PSG are a good case study. The expectations may not be as high for Valencia, but for sure his experience will come in handy. Daniel Parejo: He is the wizard at the base of midfielders creating chances and orchestrating moves that unlock opponents. He is a fan favourite and he has the backing he needs to shine. Denis Cheryshev: The Russian switched Villareal for Valencia. He is a performer when called upon to and his world cup exploits are evident - he is a player to watch. Germany Bayern Munich Robert Lewandowski: The Polish striker has been disapproving about the way his club has done business in the transfer market lately, but nonetheless the Bavarians will depend in his firepower in their bid to recapture the title they

september 2019 pulser magazine

last won in 2013. Kingsley Coman: The injury prone winger is seen as a liability to the team due to concerns over his fitness, but who knows what surprises he could pull? Leon Goretzka: The midfielder is yet to hit the level he had while at Shackle 04, but has shown glimpses that he can. This for him is a ‘do at all costs’ season for the locally dominant side. Serge Gnabry: The former Arsenal player was named player of the season at the club due to his performances. This season, Bayern will need him at his best.

Borrusia Dortmund Marco Reus: The Dortmund captain enjoyed a season in his career that was free of injuries. Now the task to lead Lucien Favre’s men lies on him. He is expected to motivate the young squad to do better than they did last season. Jadon Sancho: The English man has been a revelation since his switch to Germany. His skills have been running defenders in and out and has been leading in the assists charts. Thorgan Hazard: The younger brother to Eden Hazard has cut a niche from himself and moved from his brother’s shadow. His performance earned him a move to Dortmund and expectations are high among the Dortmund fans that he will lead them to the promised land. Julian Brandt: Another new signing from Bayer Leverkusen, Brandt has received praise for being a sharp forward at a young age.

Barcelona Once again the Spanish champions find themselves firm favourites to lift the Champions League that has been evasive with recent players’ exits.

to Bayern. Werner is not your ordinary striker; one would struggle to find a weakness in him, and has been a faithful servant to this club. Emil Forsberg: The playmaker has seen many big clubs keep their eyes on him for seasons. He is very promising and one to watch this season. d) Bayer Leverkusen Kai Havertz: The youngster has been scoring goals left, right and centre since his break out and this will be one of the club’s reason to put the trust in him. Leon Bailey: The Jamaican is a joy to watch. He is one unique player who has rare skills and unflappable composure. ITALY Juventus Cristiano Ronaldo: He promised Old Lady fans the Champions League trophy in a maximum of two seasons. Ronaldo is the king of this competition and needs no introduction. Miralem Pjanic: Pjanic is one player who is hardly hyped. Many times, his strength can be witnessed only when he is absent from the team thanks to the loopholes created. He is the engine pushing lay forward and at the same time protecting the defense. Paulo Dybala: Transfer rumours may have affected his output, but Dybala will be offering everything to show why he deserves a starting spot. Napoli Lorenzo Insigne: The Italian is well remembered for calling out his former boss Maurizio Sarri when he moved to Juventus. He knows his value, his worth. He is that short wizard who is largely hidden until he erupts with a goal. Dries Mertens: The Belgian has been phenomenal at the striker’s position, but since Carlo Ancelloti took over, he has been moved to the wing where he is itching to show his quality once again. Allan: Since the transfer of Jorginho, Allan has ensured Napoli doesn’t miss him at all. Inter Milan Romelu Lukaku: Finally Conte has his

man and Lukaku has the love and platform to prove his critics wrong after his Manchester United exit. Diego Godin: For years, Godin was the heart of the Atletico defence and here he teams up with his former partner in crime at Atletico Miranda. Radja Naingollan: Antonio Conte tried to sign Naingollan during his time at Chelsea and fate has brought them together here and all we expect is fireworks. England Manchester City Sergio Aguero: Aguero needs no introduction and he is every team’s dream for a striker. Manchester City’s painful exit from the competition lasts season is still haunting them and, as it seems, the weight is heavily on Aguero to deliver the magic. Bernardo Silva: The player who was last year’s Player of the Year, is a testimony of the calibre of player’s City has in store to claim the trophy. Rodrigo: Described as the perfect holding midfielder by Pep Guardiola, Rodrigo’s performance has been perfect. This could be what City needs to ease the burden on Fernadinho. Raheem Sterling: Sterling is not just pace, but also speed and smarts on the pitch. He has been getting better with age and this promises to be the climax of his career at City. Liverpool Mohammed Salah: He has been the pillar of the team. This season, expectations are high for Liverpool to emulate Real in retaining the trophy. Sadio Mane: The star player during the AFCON, Mane is the other half of the three musketeers that won the trophy for the team last season. Mane has been getting better with age and this season promises to be one of his best. Roberto Firmino: The third piece of the trio that terrorised teams in the competition last season, Firmino is one man to watch this season. Virgil van Dijk: He has justified why Liverpool splashed all that money to land him. This guy is a football genius. Chelsea Christian Pulisic: He is seen as the perfect replacement to Eden Hazard, but he has maintained he is his own player.

Even though nothing big is expected from Chelsea this season, everybody has their focus on Pulisic. N’Golo Kante: No matter the opponent you can’t fail to notice N’Golo in the field. Expectations are always high for him to perform well even if the odds are against his team. Loftus Cheek: He is part of the youthful brigade that has been fighting for recognition at the club and his performance so far has shown he deserves a chance to prove himself. Tottenham Son Heung-min: The absence of Harry Kane helped him step up to the big occasion and he filled big shoes on Tottenham’s way to the finals last season. We can only imagine what the partnership will produce this time round. Harry Kane: Kane is the king at Tottenham. We are always waiting for the goal to pop up no matter when or where. Tanguy Ndombele: He scored in his first game for the club and he is worthy of the praise he’s been getting. If his time at Lyon is anything to go by, then we are in for a great show. France PSG Mbappe: The striker is worth every penny paid to Monaco to get him. This season, the lessons from the Manchester United game will be etched in PSG’s minds as they seek the holy grail of football that has been evasive to the spend thrift club. Edinson Cavani: The Uruguayan always has the weight of the club on his shoulders at all times. This season we just hope injuries won’t derail him like last season. Marco Verrati: The Italian has been touted as the next Xavi. Lille Loic Remy: The striker has become a nomad; playing for different teams in England and France. Now Remy has found a perfect place in Lille and this could be where his star will shine bright. Victor Osimhen: The replacement to Nicolas Pepe has made Lille fans forget their disappointment. Expectations are high he won’t disappoint.

FIFA 20 For the last three seasons, the FIFA series has included a mode called The Journey, which included familial discord, struggles in new environments, and rivals between developing players. That culminated in a finale last year. EA has opted to end The Journey. Here you can create a manager, including their body type, skin, clothing, and hair. For the first time ever in the series, you can create a female manager as well, and once your team has left the pitch, you can answer questions from the media regarding its performance. It also includes Volta street football. Depending on the pitch you’re playing on, you can knock the ball off the wall for a strategic advantage, and show off with extra flair that fits the laid-back tone of the sport.
