This

Sunday is the

“season

finale for PUMC's

handbell choirs. We celebrate

their ministry

bringing bright and beautiful music to our

worship of God. We also celebrate and recognize the

powerful ministry of Oma Buckner, who is retiring this spring

from the position of Bell Choir Director. We are

grateful to Oma for her many years of loyal,

prayerful, and faithful

service. She has blessed

many lives and provided a special glow to PUMC

worship through all the music groups she has

organized and led. Because music is such a powerful vehicle to reveal and

express the love of God, we will enjoy singing some

favorite hymns today. Sing praises to God!

Classic Worship Notes Plainfield UMC welcomes Vince Carr back to the organ bench for worship today. The Church (Epistle) Sonata #4 in D Major is one of 17 Mozart wrote between 1772 and 1780. These short pieces were played during the Mass between the Epistle and Gospel readings. After Mozart left Salzburg, Epistle sonatas fell out of use when the Archbishop mandated that a choral motet or congregational hymn be used instead. American organist and composer, Gerald Near, has served in many churches throughout the country. “Seelingbrautigam” translates as “happy or cheerful bridegroom.” Listen closely to discover how this anthem speaks to you. A favorite hymn by author Fanny Crosby, “To God Be the Glory” was originally sung in British churches. Used frequently in the Billy Graham Crusades, it became popular in the United States. While many of Crosby’s texts focus on our relationship to God, this one focuses on God’s glory. What aspects of God’s glory will you sing about today? Eugene Monroe Bartlett, Sr., lived in Arkansas most of his life. Bartlett’s mission was to publish hymns and teach singers to sightread music. In addition he composed many hymns and gospel songs. Written following a stroke that left him bedridden the last two years of his life, “Victory In Jesus” proclaims the complete salvation experience. As the Bell Choir ends its season today, we appreciate their dedication to providing music in worship and anticipate their return in the fall.

Time for Prayer Pastoral Prayer The Lord’s Prayer 895 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Giving Because God gives, we give. Thank you for your generosity. Offertory (8:30 & 9:50 a.m.) Mallet Madness Praise Bells (11:10 a.m.) Praise His Holy Name Adult Choir * Hymn for Parting 370 Victory in Jesus * Dismissal & Blessing * Postlude Improvisation

New PUMC Book Study

The Book of Job Starts June 2

Why does God permit suffering? It’s a question all of us have asked, and the book of Job points us toward some answers. Job’s questions are our questions, and we can identify with his frustration, disappointment, and confusion in the midst of trials. In this series, Dr. Derek W.H. Thomas walks us through the book of Job and considers what the Bible says about our darkest moments. He addresses the difficult question of the relationship between God’s sovereignty and the existence of evil, sin, and suffering. In the end, as Dr. Thomas shows, it’s in our trials that we learn to trust God and say with Job, “Blessed be the name of the Lord.” You are invited to this 12-week Bible study in the Koinonia Room weekly, Fridays from noon – 1:30 p.m., beginning on June 2. Contact Ron & Carolyn Mercer or Larry & Anne Rudy through the church office for more information.

LAST SATURDAY LUNCH You are invited on Saturday, May 27, for a nourishing lunch and some great fellowship. Lunch is provided by members of PUMC. This is a free meal to all the community served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Clayton Hall. Please enter through Door 14.

Welcome Back: Vince Carr As part of the completion of the new pipe organ, we are inviting back to the organ bench persons who have served as PUMC organists in prior years. (Stay tuned for continued announcements over the coming months.) Vince Carr takes the bench in worship at all three Classic Worship hours (8:30, 9:50 and 11:10) today. Vince served on the PUMC staff 15 years ago while a student at Indiana University. He now serves as Assistant Organist and Choirmaster at Cathedral of the Incarnation (New York) and Adjunct Professor at Montclair State University. In addition to providing music during each of the three worship hours, Vince also looks forward to seeing so many familiar faces. You are welcome to come forward to the organ console and greet Vince after the postlude.
