Trailhead #1

We Have It Good

SEPTEMBER 30, 2018 CLASSIC WORSHIP | 8:45 & 10:00 A.M. PREACHING CHAPEL 11:15 A.M.

WE HAVE IT GOOD

LUKE 18:9-14 REV. CHARLIE WILFONG Hikers know how it works. The trail is long, so you pace yourself and secure all the necessary provisions. The map shows the route and the destination. There is safety in numbers. You find your bearings with a compass. There will be some special scenery and stops along the way. The first Jesus-followers were not called “Christians” for a number of years. At first, they were called people of “The Way.” That evokes the notion of a path—a hike—if you will. As followers of Jesus, we are progressing along a path that will lead to our final destination—living and loving like Jesus. One key and critical quality of Jesus-followers is a sense of thankfulness. We think we know about gratitude because we have a national holiday for it—Thanksgiving. But what does the Bible have to say about the authentic quality of gratitude that should be manifest in faithful followers of Jesus? The path to gratitude is the path to knowing God, proclaiming God, and seeing God. It’s a path to Jesus. Through our worship series, “The Gratitude Path,” we will discover the trail our hearts must travel in order to arrive at the destination of genuine biblical gratitude. Lace up your hiking boots and let’s go!

We Have It Good! Trailhead #1

What new idea for practicing gratitude will you take with you into this next week? What will you add to your practice of giving thanks?

CLASSIC WORSHIP NOTES “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” is a hymn based on Joachim Neander’s German hymn “Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren”, published in 1680. The hymn is often referred to as a magnificent hymn of praise to God, and could be one of the finest compositions by the author, certainly placing it first in its class of hymn. It is noted to be the most favorite hymns of King Frederick William III of Prussia. As we study the text, we find a ourselves being called to a place to praise God, followed by calling upon a larger group to join the praise with musical instruments. Upon a deeper dive into this hymn, I found myself continually drawn to Neander’s relationship with God. As a Pietists in the Lutheran Church, Neander emphasized small groups for prayer, scripture study, personal accountability, and good works. Pietists believed that trust in Christ centered a person’s core faith more than correct theology. Aside from these beliefs, we certainly would not know of this hymn tune had it not been for the work of Catherine Winkworth who translated this hymn during the 19th century into the English language. As we enter into the Gratitude Series, we will utilize this hymn tune from Sunday to Sunday. May it serve as a reminder to us that we should walk in a spirit of gratitude to God for the great things God has done, is doing, and will do.

The Gratitude Path is a family-centered, church-wide study that PUMC will embarks on today. The Gratitude Path study will take place over four weeks in Classic Worship, NewDay Praise Worship and kids@pumc (Sunday children’s programming at PUMC). A Gratitude Path Log Book is available at PUMC to guide you through your gratitude journey, connecting your worship experience, your small group experience, and your personal spiritual growth journey. Sign up this Sunday in the Main Lobby for a small group. Please contact Pastor Ken Loudenback at kloudenback@pumc.org or at 317.839.2319 with questions.

WINTER COAT DRIVE As winter approaches there will be many local children and others in need of warm coats and other winter gear. Please place new or clean used winter coats of all sizes in the boxes located in various places at PUMC. In mid-October they will be distributed at an event at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds to persons needing their warmth. Thank you for sharing God’s BIG Love in this way!
