Colossians 3:12-17

SEPTEMBER 23, 2018 NEWDAY PRAISE WORSHIP | 8:45 & 10:00 A.M.

MADE FOR MONDAYS COLOSSIANS 3:12-17 REV. ELIZABETH GILBERT

Culture, social media memes, and many of our day to day experiences drive towards the weekend. We call Wednesday “Hump Day,” celebrating the fact that we’ve made it to the middle of the work week - made it “over the hump” - and we’re on the short, downhill slide toward the weekend. Rush hour starts early on Friday as everyone tries to close out their work week early and get a jump on their weekend days off. And the Carpenters have had us singing for decades.... “Rainy days and Mondays always get me down.” But Mondays have been unfairly given a bad rap. They have more meaning and potential than we generally give them credit for having. Whether you’re in the marketplace, in the schools, or in the home God has a purpose for your Mondays. Life with Jesus is not just about worship on Sunday and an occasional check-in through prayer when the need arises. Life with Jesus provides an opportunity for ministry and mission everyday of the week, wherever we find ourselves. Your Mondays have meaning, not just to your employer and your bank account. Mondays are God’s plan for reaching the world with his love and encouragement. As a follower of Jesus, you were made for Mondays!

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

COLOSSIANS 3:12-17 (NIV)

PRAYER FOR MONDAY MORNING Holy God, As I begin another Monday and another work week, please brush away my weariness. Inspire me in the tasks you’ve given me and in my witness for you. Help me to discover new ways to reveal your love to all whom I meet. Keep my mind clear and focused on all I need to achieve, And give me the your wisdom to overcome difficulties and to approach challenges with grace, mercy and compassion. I look to you and trust that you are with me this day. I give you all that I am and all that I will do in my work, so that your power and presence might be known and made real in my workplace and in the world. Amen.
