The Piercing of Mary’s Soul Rev. Ken Loudenback Luke 2:22-40
When a baby is born parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends all celebrate the child’s arrival. We wonder at the innocence of such a beautiful, delicate creature. We pray for a good life. We ask God to protect and guard the child. We hope with all our heart that the child will never suffer pain, know heartache, or want for anything. Surely Mary wanted the same for the child born to her that first Christmas. But this was no ordinary child. Even before his birth he was heralded as the one who would “save his people from their sins.” He will be “Emmanuel... God with us.” This child will be the Messiah. And this child will grow to be opposed, many will rise and fall because of this child, and Mary herself will suffer along with him. We pray for peace and comfort. But then life happens. We have our own ups and downs. Our spirits seem to rise and fall with the ebb and flow of our lives. Where is God in all of it? How could he let these things happen to me? And who will save me from this mess I’m in? Even in the worst of times, God is with us. Jesus came to save us from ourselves and make a new way to God for us. Our peace comes not from our circumstances, but from Jesus, our Savior.
