Welcome to Christmas Eve worship at Plainfield United Methodist Church. Worship begins with an extended prelude this evening, providing the opportunity for you to center yourself, meditate, pray and praise as we prepare for the birth of the King of kings, the Lord of lords, and the Savior of the nations. Following a two-year meticulous restoration and expansion which was completed in fall 2016, PUMC’s glorious pipe organ leads much of the musical elements of worship tonight. A central component of worship at PUMC each week, music led by the pipe organ, voices and other instruments is offered in praise of the Creator and to offer us an encounter with the beauty, grandeur and purity of God’s creation. The hymn “O Come, All Ye Faithful” was written in Latin initially in the middle of the 18th century, and the music composed around the same period. “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” features text written by Charles Wesley, a prolific hymn writer and the younger brother of Methodism founder John Wesley, which he requested be sung to slow, solemn music. The music to which we sing the familiar hymn today initially was penned by German composer, organist and pianist Felix Mendelssohn, and later adapted and harmonized by English musician William Cummings who, consequently, was a young chorister in a performance of the oratorio Elijah written and conducted by Mendelssohn. Tonight’s worship is loosely based on the tradition of “Nine Lessons and Carols” outlined initially in England, and yet today inspiring Christmas Eve worship world-wide. The alternating pattern of scripture readings and music – either sung by the congregation or the choir – transports worshipers to Bethlehem on the night of Jesus’ birth. Every element of tonight’s worship was prayerfully prepared with you in mind. Receive the gift of Christmas on this night. Heighten your senses. Expect the unexpected. Merry Christmas.

Not a Silent Night
Rev. Charlie Wilfong Luke 2:1-7 The manger scenes are always so calm and peaceful. Angels singing beautiful music. Adoring shepherds and kings. Mary and Joseph in blissful adoration of the newborn. Why isn’t my life like that at Christmas? Our struggles and fears are still real. But don’t let the manger scenes fool you. It was not so calm, peaceful, and blissful for Mary when Jesus was born, either. It was loud, frightening, and lonely. God was at work when Jesus was born into Mary’s chaotic world. The good news is that the same God is at work to bring the same gifts into your life—even in the middle of your trials and turmoil. Rejoice! God’s gift in Jesus, which is for you, is here! People: We celebrate and rejoice for the wondrous gifts given to us. Leader: Here in our worship, we look to the future. People: We are filled with the gifts of Christmas: love, hope, peace, joy! All: Now we again sing the joyous carols of Christmas and witness to our Savior’s birth. Worship Notes Merry Christmas, Christ the Lord is born! Today’s opening hymn, “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” was written in Latin initially in the middle of the 18th century, and the music composed around the same period. Both the provenance of the text and of the music are foggy and up for debate, although most attribute the text and music to John Wade, and the Latin-toEnglish translation of the text to 19th century English Roman Catholic priest Frederick Oakley. The second hymn in worship this morning is based on a French carol, with text noting the experience of the shepherds encountering the angels as noted in the Gospel of Luke. The soprano, alto, tenor and bass parts of the recurring refrain weave throughout one another in something of a call-and-response, symbiotic musical relationship. As with most of the hymns we sing at this church, considering singing one of the other voice parts (instead of melody) as found in the hymnal on page 238. The postlude highlights the grandeur of the pipe organ as we celebrate Jesus’ birth in a florid expression of faith featuring the familiar hymn “Joy to the World.” All are welcome to come forward during the postlude, especially to watch the complicated – and consistently briskly moving – footwork on the pedals.

The Greatest Gift
Rev. Elizabeth Gilbert John 1:1-18 The season of Advent is the season of “not yet.” We mark the weeks leading up to Christmas with candles on the Advent wreath every Sunday in church; with parties at school and work and with family; with shopping, baking, and wrapping. And then in the span of a day or two, the anticipation breaks through and we celebrate! We open gifts, and we feast, and we gather with the people closest to us. It’s Christmas! All that we’ve waited for has arrived! The one gift that we have most anticipated, though, is not a gift we unwrap or post a photo of on Facebook. The greatest gift of Christmas is not a toy, or something to wear, or even a visit to someplace special. The greatest gift of the season is not something, at all. It’s someone. All the gifts and good food of Christmas make the day special, but it’s the gift of God come to us in Jesus that will outlast all of the others. Merry Christmas!
