WHAT JESUS PRAYED FOR US JOHN 17:20-26 REV. CHARLIE WILFONG
Houses are no longer made entirely of wood because the variety of materials makes them strong, beautiful, and functional. One house, many rooms, various materials. The house is a “unity”, but it is not all “uniform.” Uniformity is dysfunctional. The Apostle Paul makes this clear in his analogy of the Church and the human body in 1 Corinthians 12. He suggests that if everyone were an “eye”, the body would be unable to hear, etc. So, what does Jesus want when he prays to the Father for all of his followers to “all be one”? It’s not about uniformity.
CLASSIC WORSHIP NOTES Today marks the first Sunday of Lent, a period of preparation that precedes Easter, and the anthem played by the Joyful Praise Bells reminds us of Jesus’ sacrificial role for all believers. Among various named given to Jesus Christ – King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Prince of Peace – The Lamb of God is a reference from the historic Latin Mass, recalling the sacrificial nature of Jesus’ life, death and ultimate resurrection. The Offertory today is Go, Light Your World by Chris Rice, a contemporary song writer who had no intentions of a career in music. He holds a degree in psychology and communications, but writing songs and working with youth and college students became his full-time career. Amy Cronin joins the Adult Choir to sing this song which has become one of this congregation’s most cherished forms of musical expression. The lyrics of Go, Light Your World resonate similarly to “This little light of mine.” Based on Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world…Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house…” Every one of us reflects the light of Jesus and is called by God to let our light shine upon others within our world, who are in the darkness of sin and loneliness.
