EXPERIENCE THE RISEN CHRIST IN CREATION LUKE 24:1-12 REV. CHARLIE WILFONG
In our church-wide study earlier this year, we considered the questions John Wesley and the earliest “Methodists” used to grow as followers of Jesus—to grow in love for God and neighbor. It is helpful to revisit those questions often. During these weeks following Easter, when we celebrate Jesus coming back alive from the dead and his continued life among us, the first Wesley question is especially helpful. “Is Jesus real to me?” If Jesus is alive from the dead and continues to live, have I experienced him? Do I know him? How can Jesus be real to me? What we find in the Gospel of Luke helps us understand how we can “Experience the Risen Christ”.
CLASSIC WORSHIP NOTES The worship service today is opened with a piano duet combining two familiar tunes, Simple Gifts and Tallis Canon. Both pieces can be played as a canon or round (like “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”), which means the exact same melody is played by different hands but begin at different times so that different parts of the melody fit harmoniously together. While listening to this piece, try picking out each melody and figuring out which hand is playing. Or listen to the piece as a whole and hear how exquisitely the composer has intertwined the two simple melodies played by four hands. The words in today’s hymns may be very meaningful. The opening hymn “Sing Praise To God Who Reigns Above” extols the greatness of God in giving all good things to His people, and calls on them to continue to give praise He richly deserves. The Hymn of Preparation ”This Is My Father’s World” encourages us to hear and to see God’s reigning presence in all aspects of His creation. The text of “It Is Well With My Soul” originally written as a poem, illustrates the author’s trust in God during life’s prosperity, and calamities. “Just A Closer Walk with Thee” acknowledges the frailty of human life and will power and asks for Jesus’ companionship throughout daily life. The power of God and His glory in creation permeate the Hymn for Parting “I Sing the Almighty Power of God.” Use these texts as a personal worship experience.

CLASSIC WORSHIP SERIES: EXPERIENCE THE RISEN CHRIST In PUMC’s church-wide study earlier this year, we considered the questions John Wesley and the earliest “Methodists” used to grow as followers of Jesus—to grow in love for God and neighbor. Invite a friend to join you for this Classic Worship series that begins today, April 15.
LAST SATURDAY LUNCH You are invited on Saturday, April 28, for a nourishing lunch and some great fellowship. Lunch is provided by members of PUMC. This is a free meal to all the community served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Clayton Hall. Please enter through Door 14.
CALL FOR COFFEE CANS FOR ANGEL TREE
PUMC CONCERT SERIES PRESENTS:
VINCE CARR
The next 2018 PUMC Concert Series event is coming up. Former PUMC organist Vince Carr returns to present “Bloomin’ Pipes!” on April 29 at 4:00 p.m. This is his first full-length recital in Indiana since he was appointed as the newest organ professor at Indiana University in 2017. Join us for this engaging and exciting concert featuring Vince… and a few other surprises!
One valuable resource that is needed for PUMC’s Angel Tree Ministry every year is coffee cans. We decorate these cans for use in delivering home-baked Christmas Cookies to the Angel Tree children. Ideally, we would like to have metal coffee cans, but we realize that they are hard to come by. A viable alternative are round 240 and 270 cup plastic coffee cans. (We cannot use square cans or 210 cup plastic coffee cans. Please drop off clean, empty coffee cans at the Donation Depot near the church office to help with this important part of the Christmas Angel Tree Ministry.
Encore Senior Ministries WHAT WILL YOU DO?
Come join the fun! A team from PUMC will once again be going to Henderson Settlement the week of May 20 in the beautiful Appalachian mountains. The volunteers will be working construction, helping in the Thrift Store, Library, greenhouse, adult classrooms, and painting or landscaping. This is a chance for you to experience the joy of giving to others while also being entertained one evening by a group of Appalachian musicians, eating homemade ice cream, meeting new friends, and playing games in the evenings. Or if you prefer, you can just relax and wind down in a comfortable soft chair reading or watching TV. Morning devotions start each day and the week is celebrated on Thursday evening with a review of memorable experiences by volunteers and a meaningful Communion service. If you would like more information or have an interest in participating, please contact Don Sanders at 317.839.7192 or hendersonsettlement@pumc.org. Learn more about the Henderson Settlement at hendersonsettlement.com.
Encore was privileged to have Tamara Jessup, Executive Director of Mental Health America of Hendricks County, speak at our last luncheon. She explained that their organization supports many who would otherwise be forgotten by providing gifts on special occasions and necessities through their recently opened Choice Pantry. While they receive gifts from various organizations at Christmas time, their clients have needs throughout the year. Encore will have a plastic tub available at the Encore Desk in the main lobby to gather your contributions to help meet some of their needs. They are particularly in need of blankets and lap robes; however, there are many items that are listed on the handout that is printed for you to take home with you as a reminder to pick up an item or two to add to the tub. The tub will be available until mid-June. Thank you for your generosity in making this Encore mission successful.
IT’S TIME FOR KINDERBELLS! At PUMC, Mother’s Day is the time for young children to ring bells for worship. If your child is 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 years old, they are eligible to par ticipate. Rehearsals will be in the sanctuary at 6:30 pm on May 2 and May 9. Then on Mother’s Day, May 13, 2018, the children will gather in the bell room at 9:40am to rehearse and be guided at the proper time to ring at both New Day Praise and Classic worship at 10:00am. Following their presentation, we will guide your children to the Education wing to join their classes. If you have questions or would like to register your child, contact Lynn Blosser at 317-2930013 or lblosser@pumc.org.
