FAITH TO START

PHILIPPIANS 1:1-6 REV. ELIZABETH GILBERT

“Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday” according to one philospher. Whether you are a chronic procrastinator or only have an occasional run-in with the practice, it’s a common experience to be so overwhelmed by some large task that you have trouble even getting started. The thought of getting yourself out of debt, going back to school to get your degree, or giving up smoking or some other unhealthy habit can loom so large in front of you that you give up before you even start. And trying to do any of these things without help, support and encouragement would be a daunting task, indeed. A knowledgable coach, a faithful friend, or an expert resource can be helpful in navigating a difficult project through to completion. God has a way of calling his people to some wildly huge tasks - and not always with the clarity our timid souls would like. We might wonder if we have what it takes to change jobs, take on a new responsibility, or serve in a particular ministry when God asks us to step out in faith with him. But with God we have all we need to join him in his work in the world because God is always faithful to finish to what he starts. We don’t have to have to have enough faith to do the whole job, only enough faith to start. God will provide everything else.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.

PHILIPPIANS 1:1-6 (NRSV)

2018 INUMC ANNUAL CONFERENCE REPORT PUMC gives special thanks to its Lay Members to this year’s Indiana United Methodist Church Annual Conference: Joe and Sandy Bennett, Larry Rudy, Zoe Wiltrout, and Anthony Swinger. (Anthony also serves as INUMC’s Central District Lay Leader and head of Central District Lay Servant School.) They attended and participated in this annual gathering of Indiana United Methodists along with PUMC’s appointed clergy. This gathering of nearly 2,000 United Methodists includes worship, business sessions, intentional conversations on topics of concern for the church, and connecting with persons, programs, ministries and mission projects of the church. PUMC’s Lay Members participated in all aspects of the event and report the following highlights of their experience:

• •

The rousing address by Indiana Bishop Julius C. Trimble on Friday morning. (Learn more about Indiana’s Bishop here: inumc.org/bishopjuliusctrimble) The theme for the Conference was “See All the People.” Bishop Trimble set a goal that by 2020 the Indiana Conference would be 100% “missional,” our mission field being people in the church and people outside the church. Bishop Trimble encouraged us to “Leave the building,” to see ALL the people. We were all encouraged to make a life-changing difference in others. Bishop Trimble pointed out that people are waiting on the church to see them. Of the 6.5 million people in Indiana, 4 million are unaffiliated with any religion. A moving speech that directed attendees to the booklet, “Developing an Intentional Discipleship System: A Guide for Congregations” by Junius B. Dotson, received with conference registration. Larry Rudy, commented, “I have read it now twice, and I am most impressed by the questions it poses for us as individuals and as a church. I applaud the section entitled, “Understanding & Rediscovering the ‘Why’ of Discipleship.” Viewing the short YouTube video at pumc.link/NgGgDx and reflecting on the ideas brought out by this booklet will give a new meaning to discipleship!” The enormous variety of opportunities to serve and be served that was present and represented in the Exhibition Hall.

Joe and Sandy Bennett reflected, “The Laity (non-clergy) Meeting was important to help us understand the Indiana Conference and how it functions, its size and all that is happening, and the coordination with other state conferences. We appreciated the opportunity to hear and discuss issues for both small and large churches within the Conference during intentional conversations at round tables. And we were impressed with the amount of time and knowledge that have been used to keep UMC current in today’s world.” To learn more about the Indiana United Methodist Church, visit inumc.org. And talk with any pastor if you would have interest in serving as a Lay Member for PUMC at a future Annual Conference.

CALL FOR COFFEE CANS FOR ANGEL TREE One valuable resource that is needed for PUMC’s Angel Tree Ministry every year is coffee cans. We decorate these cans for use in delivering home-baked Christmas Cookies to the Angel Tree children. Ideally, we would like to have metal coffee cans, but we realize that they are hard to come by. A viable alternative are round 240 and 270 cup plastic coffee cans. (We cannot use square cans or 210 cup plastic coffee cans.) Please drop off clean, empty coffee cans at the Donation Depot near the church office to help with this important part of the Christmas Angel Tree Ministry.
