EDITOR’S NOTE

Hello, Winter! It’s my favourite season of the year. Mainly because it’s just so beautiful! The crisp, cool air laced with freshness that only winter can bring… It is also a season that is ideal for food lovers. Every dish and beverage that is meant for the winter has a warm, hearty feel to it. And this juxtaposition of the season and all we do is what makes it the best.

“Keeping in tune with winter and its warmth, we’re bringing you some of the trends and styles you should take note of and ideally embrace this winter.” @adityakuber

While winter brings about a certain starkness in nature (what with it immediately following Fall), it also gives us the opportunity to cocoon ourselves in layers of clothing. More warmth. Keeping in tune with winter and its warmth, we’re bringing you some of the trends and styles you should take note of and ideally embrace this winter. There’s something for everyone here and most of all, it’s all warm!

PUNE EXPRESS

Chill, Pune!

We all have a couple or more of favourite spots in the city that we like hanging out in with family and friends. Chilly December brings with it a festive air, giving us more of a reason to spend time with family and the pals, whether that’s over some hot tea, great food or simply a few beers (or something stronger). We asked a few locals about their top spot, where they like spending their December evenings...

The ultimate spot for me to chill with friends will have to be High Spirits in Koregaon Park. A bunch of us make sure we meet there at least once a week over lunch or dinner. I love the music, ambience and food. And I especially like the open-air seating wherein one can enjoy the nip in the air and still feel cosy due to the lovely and comfortable surroundings.

I love sitting at the Barista in Camp while I watch the festive lights and passerby while sipping on a hot cuppa with a couple of friends. There’s something about Decembers in Pune and spending them outdoors. It isn’t as cold here as some of the other cities I’ve lived in and yet everything seems so perfect.

My current favourite spot will have to be Irish Village in Koregaon Park. Great wine, good company and the perfect ambience always makes for an evening well spent. I love their decor and food too. The place has a comfortable and cosy wintry feel about it.

I absolutely love chilling at the roadside stalls in Viman Nagar, the area where I stay. There’s so much of variety we have here now; momos, South Indian joints, yummy chinese food, shakes etc. Us friends meet up at one of the stalls every other evening and relax and unwind, watching passersby, chatting and laughing. Such evenings are just perfect; chilly air, hot food and great friends!

Mehul Sharma IT Professional

My favourite spot in the city, especially during the winter, is a dhaba on the highway not very far from Baner. It’s called Sayali and one can easily miss the place at night as they’re not very well lit up. A group of us try going there for dinner every other Sunday. You must try their Biryani and spicy chicken curry. It’s a lovely and clean place with good service. The whole package just warms me up!

Karuna Yashwant Interior Designer

It’s got to be Terttulia. The place’s decor just takes me back to Goa. Being there during the chilly season is even better. Whether it’s for brunch in the warm sun or for a casual dinner in a cosy sweater, I simply love being there with family or friends. Other than that, I like hanging out at The Flour Works in Kalyani Nagar too.

We would love to know your views on the topic.

We came up with six unusual yet simple soup recipes for you to enjoy this season. Read up and get cooking! Protima Tiwary

FOOD

Potato Soup

Easy to prepare and high on energy, this potato soup is a must-try for all potato lovers.

Ingredients •

5 large potatoes

Some black pepper

2 green onions

Salt

Some dried basil

Water

2-1/2 cups milk (more if needed)

Preparation

Peel the potatoes and chop them into halves and then into fourths. Finely slice the green onion (don’t use the tops and bottoms) and mince. Add the potatoes and onion into a medium-sized sauce pan with water to cover and two shakes of dried basil flakes. Boil on high heat for about 30 minutes. Drain the water until it is just under the level of your cooked potatoes. Add about 2-1/2 cups of milk. If it doesn’t look soupy enough, add a dash or two more. Now mash the potatoes like you would with mash potatoes, but leave some small chunks of them for texture. Add pepper and salt to taste. Then heat again for about two to three minutes and serve.

Pasta Soup

Do something different with the pasta! How about a healthy, low fat soup full of fiber?

Ingredients •

1 tbsp olive oil

2 carrots, chopped

1 large onion, finely chopped

1ltr vegetable stock

400g can chopped tomatoes

200g frozen mixed peas and beans

250g pack fresh filled tortellini (we used spinach and ricotta)

Grated parmesan to serve

Photo: April Younglove Used under Creative Commons License

Pizza Soup Save this one for times when you are craving a thick tomato sauce, and of course when you’re almost starving!

Preparation Heat oil in a pan. Fry the carrots and onion for 5 minutes until they start to soften. Add the stock and tomatoes and then simmer for 10 minutes. Add the peas and beans with 5 minutes to go. Once the veggies are tender, stir in the pasta. Return to the boil and simmer for 2 mins until the pasta is just cooked. If you’re using basil, then stir it in now. Season, then serve the soup in bowls topped with a sprinkling of Parmesan and slices of garlic bread.

Ingredients •

1 tablespoon butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

1/4 cup minced onion

2 cloves of garlic, minced or pressed

150 gm of bread, in 1 inch chunks

1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning herbs

1/2 cup chicken broth or stock (and more for thinning if needed)

1 1/2 ounce canned tomato sauce or diced/whole tomatoes

1 tablespoon tomato paste

1/2 teaspoon balsamic (or apple cider) vinegar

Salt and pepper to taste

1/4 cup mozzarella cheese and/or parmesan cheese (to top off the soup before serving)

Preparation

facebook.com/Puneunltd

Place a heavy-bottom saucepan over medium heat. Add the butter and oil and when sizzling, add the onion. Fry the onion until it’s soft and just turning brown. Turn up the heat to high and add the bread chunks and garlic. Fry until any liquid is soaked up and the bread begins to become crispy. Add the 1/2 cup of chicken stock and stir in, and lower the heat. Add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, vinegar and Italian herb seasoning, and simmer for 15 minutes. Add more chicken stock to thin the soup to your preferred consistency (it should be thick). Simmer for an additional minute. Ladle into bowls, sprinkle a little parmesan and/or mozzarella cheese on top and serve!

Corn & Shrimp Chowder

Photo: Leszek Leszczynski Used under Creative Commons License

Easy to prepare, this creamy corn soup can be refrigerated for 2 days or frozen up to a month!

Ingredients •

1 tablespoon margarine or butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

3 medium carrots, coarsely chopped

1 large onion, coarsely chopped

1 stalk celery, coarsely chopped

2 packs (10 ounces each) frozen whole-kernel corn

2 cans (14 1/2 ounces each) chicken broth

2 teaspoon sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon dried thyme

1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper (cayenne). Add more if needed.

1 3/4 pound medium shrimp

1/2 cup half-and-half or light cream

Chopped fresh thyme leaves for garnish

12 PUNE UNLTD.

Preparation Melt the butter in olive oil over medium heat until hot. Add carrots, onion and celery and cook until the vegetables are tender; for about 15 minutes, stirring often. Reserve 1 1/2 cups corn. Add remaining corn to the pan; stir in chicken broth, sugar, salt, thyme, ground red pepper and 2 cups water. Heat to boiling over high heat. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile, shell and de-vein 20 shrimps, leaving the tail part of the shell on, for garnish. Shell and de-vein the remaining shrimp, then slice each horizontally in half and set aside. In a blender at low speed, with the center part of the cover removed to allow steam to escape, blend the soup in small batches until very smooth. Pour each batch into a large bowl. Return the blended soup and reserved corn to the same saucepan; stir in half and half. Heat the soup over medium heat until hot, stirring occasionally. Do not boil. Add the sliced shrimp and cook for 5 minutes longer or until the shrimp turns opaque throughout. To serve, spoon the chowder into 10 bowls; garnish each with 2 whole shrimp. Sprinkle with fresh thyme.

Pune’s Winter

ENSEMBLE WHAT’S YOUR FASHION STATEMENT? Veethi Telang

Bundle up in style for Pune Unltd.’s fashion-savvy editors lay down a handy guide on winter fashion for all you Puneri fashionistas. Experiment, splurge, dive in – there’s so much you can do to look effortlessly stylish this chilly season. So, “warm up”!

“But, where are the chills?”, I ask myself every winter that I’ve experienced in Pune. Blame it on my upbringing in Madhya Pradesh and parts of Delhi; I’ve often missed the teeth-chattering, numb fingers, layers of sweaters and, beanies. Sadly, it’s December already and my pullovers and jackets look at me, pleading, waiting to be brought into use. Well, nice try, you lot! It’s not yet time. That said, if there’s one thing I love about Pune winters, it’s this – there’s absolutely no compromise in sight when it comes to fashion! Seriously, if you’re even a bit concerned about your fashion, how would you prefer dressing up? Like a walking-talking pile of woolen sack or a like a trendy, chic fashionista? As much as I love snuggling, I’d go with the latter. And that, is what makes Pune winters drool-worthy. Pune brings with it endless possibilities of experimenting with fashion and, being a fashion blogger, what more could I ask for? So, in this issue, we decided to explore the latest winter fashion trends that Puneri mulgis can make the most of. Take note as we decode the trendiest pieces hanging in Pune’s stores and get inspired. Time for a splurge, eh?

BODY-CON KNIT DRESSES There’s no way you can rule body-cons out of Indian fashionistas’ idea of fashion, can you? We’re obsessed with all things slim-fit, and truth be told, no matter what size we are, there’s one utterly fitted dress hanging in every girl’s closet. Am I wrong? I doubt it. We came across so many body-con dresses in knit material, perfect for this season. Team them up with high-heel ankle boots and

14 PUNE UNLTD.

COVER STORY you’re all set to strut. Accessorise with: An oversized bling clutch is all you need to take your knit dress to an all new level.

SEQUINED SWEATERS Are they the most gorgeous thing ever or what? Whether it’s Zara, Promod or Mango – bling sweaters are everywhere! The best thing about these sweaters is that they’re made from thin woolen material, which makes it easy for us to wear as and when mild chills kick in. Simply wear them over a neutral-coloured spaghetti or a soft tee and you’re done. If you ask me, I’d love to team these sequined sweaters with an abovethe-knee chiffon skirt or leather leggings. Edgy or feminine – they’ll bring out your personality like none other. Accessorise with: Statement finger rings and a tasseled sling.

CROPPED PULLOVERS Now these, are one of my favourite winter trends! There’s not a single store we went to that didn’t have cropped pullovers on display. If you dare to flaunt a bit of that waistline, cropped pullovers are the way to go. So what if you’re a little towards the plumper side? Here’s the good news – team that pullover up with a pair of high-waist slim-fit jeans and wear sky-high heels. As for petite women with enviable waistline, how about a pair of denim shorts and knee-high boots? Alternately, a long, chiffon maxi skirt in a contrasting colour is the way to feminine. Don’t forget to slip into a pair of t-strap flats in case of the maxi skirt. Accessorise with: Dramatise the pullover with a layered neckpiece and carry a vintage satchel.

FAUX FUR WRAPS & STOLES Channel your inner Rihanna with a faux fur stole and tell the world you’re not to be messed with! While you may not see a lot of women in Pune carrying a fur stole, isn’t that reason enough to start a trend in the city? Now, I agree it’ll be catastrophic to carry it over a trenchcoat (you don’t want to start sweating within minutes), how about wearing a minimalistic knee-length dress and wrapping it around your neck. Pull out a bright solid-coloured dress from your closet that you’ve always wanted to accessorise differently. The faux fur stole is just the right option for you. As for shoes, strappy heels would make for a lovely look. Accessorise with: An oversized leather clutch or a classic leather tote.

COVER STORY

BOYFRIEND BLAZERS Are we back to basics or what? There’s no other option. They. Just. Won’t. Go. Out. Of. Fashion. Boyfriend jackets and blazers are perfect for this weather – they’re edgy, no-fuss and instantly elevate any look. Whether you team them up with a pair of basic boyfriend jeans, trousers, skirts, dresses or even denim shorts, they end up stealing all the limelight. A total must-have in every girl’s closet, boyfriend blazers can be donned in a million ways. I, for one, love to throw mine over a V-neck tee and super-loose trousers. Sky-high leopard print heels on my feet and off I go! Accessorise with: A statement bling necklace, a classic wrist watch and, if you think you can pull it off - a classic hat.

WOOLEN MINI-SKIRTS Woolen mini-skirts kind of defy the purpose, if you ask me. But, aren’t they adorable? If you’re blessed with enviable gams, give a go to miniskirts made from knit material or wool. Almost all fashion stores in Pune have them on sale and winter in Pune gives you an opportunity to make the most of them. Team them up with a crisp white shirt or a pullover and knee-high boots. Should you wish to go a bit more feminine, add a pair of black stockings underneath the skirt and slip into ballerina flats. Who said we can’t wear skirts during winters? Accessorise with: A shoulder tote, long necklace to add length to your body and a beanie.

Truth be told, Pune winter is a win-win situation for all. While you can experiment all you want with fashion, you can also keep yourself warm and comfy throughout the season. The afore-mentioned trends are definitely a must-try for every woman in Pune who aspires to go an extra mile. Have fun, keep experimenting and don’t forget to add a personal touch to your style. Let’s make this winter fashionable, dear ladies. All Photos: Apeksha Bhagchandani

10 Cool Things

Spotted at NH7 This Year... The Bacardi NH7 Weekender music festival gets better with each passing year and as always, we had a blast. The music and food were no doubt fantastic but, here are 10 things that added to why it’s the happiest festival! Hanisha Lalwani 1. Selfie Sticks

6. Stray Dog Jam Room

Taking selfies just got a lot simpler with the selfie sticks. Lots of festival goers got along their flashy new sticks, flashed their bright smiles and went click happy at the Weekender. In addition to hands chopping in the air to the music, there were a couple of raised selfie sticks too! Whether you like them or not, festival founder Vijay Nair was quite vocal about his disapproval of selfie sticks!

This was s great feature at thr Weekender where there was a space dedicated to up and coming bands who could jam. Some of the bands jamming caught the attention of festival goers who were enjoying their music. The best bit was seeing the base guitarist of the Seattle-based band Motopny join in on one of the jam sessions.

7. Bucket ‘n’ Me 2. Steel Mugs Alcohol served in steel mugs were the newest feature at the bar this year. The mug came with a hook that enabled one to latch it on to them at the waist instead of lugging it around. With ‘I was there’ inscribed on it, the mug also double shifted as a Weekender souvenir and lots of people took it with them.

3. Ferris Wheel A giant Bacardi branded Ferris wheel was a popular addition to this year’s Weekender. Some moving trippy LED projections were visible from afar. We saw a crowd lining up for a chance to ride.

Find it annoying carrying around that Bacardi bucket moving from stage to stage? Bucket n me is an innovation wherein the buckets can now be strapped on so all people had to do was sip and make hand hearts in the air.

8. Graffiti - If the graffitied Tata Nano caught the attention of many in the previous edition of NH7, this time it was the turn of Mercedez Benz. We saw artists paint over a swanky white Benz.

9. Art Installation

A small remote controlled drone camera was probably our most favourite feature! It was on the job of capturing moments of the festival from up above. It hovered over the perimeter of the grounds, sometimes coming as low as head level!

This is one thing we look forward to seeing at every Weekender. Huge art installations have seamlessly found their space at the festival and this time it was the gigantic lit flower installation at The Dewarist stage. What made the installation even more special is the ‘gaddas’ that were placed below each flower where festival goers were laying down and soaking in the music and experience by gazing up into the starlit sky.

5. Trampoline

10. Colours

Yes, there was a trampoline at the Weekender! And there were lots of trampoline junkies jumping up and high and having a really great time!

The music experience was made even more magical with a burst of colourful confetti during the last half of Amit Trivedi’s set. The sky was even brought alive with some spectacular fireworks’ display reaffirming that the NH7 Weekender was indeed the happiest place to be!
