anadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ‘s week long visit to India is still being talked about here. This visit, despite some controversy, has raised Canada’s profile considerably. The way Trudeau, his family and colleagues have conducted themselves in India in general and Punjab in particular is commendable. It is bound to strengthen relations between India and Canada in an unprecedented manner. I have been here for almost a month now. During this time, I had an opportunity to visit Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal Pardesh and Punjab. There is a notable progress all around. Certainly, still there are a number of challenges facing the governments and public. However, overall there is marked improvement in a number of areas. There seems to be a bit more awareness about the environment now than before. Also, the highways are much better. The trip from Delhi to Punjab takes a lot less time than before. In the Punjab itself there are many highway improvement projects under way. However, the on-going increase in vehicles on the road and lack of traffic enforcement and courtesy on the road have made travelling in the big cities a real challenge. The drivers here must be considered as some of the best the way they manage to manoeuvre through traffic jams without causing serious accidents. Another area of interest at this time is the wedding season. Consequently, large number of NRIs are found everywhere. Last week I had an opportunity to attend a relative ‘ s wedding. To my great surprise it was a relatively simple wedding. There was no meat or liquor served in the marriage palace. This seemed to be an exception. Speaking of weddings two new trends seem to be growing. Some brides and grooms want to make grand entries / arrivals at the marriage palace. In this process they go to a great length to surprise the guests.

Using helicopters and other such means on these occasions seemed to be the exclusive practice of the rich and famous. However, now even the ordinary common people are also entering this arena. The other craze at weddings is the firing in the air as a sign of celebration. A number of times the weapon has misfired resulting in a number of tragedies. This has created a lot of concern. Consequently, the authorities and the marriage palace managements are cracking down on this practice. In addition to weddings this is also a popular time for melas, sports tournaments and related activities. I was pleasantly surprised to see one such activity in my ancestral village Pharwala a few days ago. It involved teams of two oxen running in circles around a make shift Persian well (khooh in the olden days). Each of the teams had to make 70 runs around the centre. The team that made these runs in the minimum time was declared the winner. I was surprised to see more than 50 teams from a wide range of villages taking part in this mela. The place was full of enthusiastic people enjoying this activity. I guess such activities act as a reef of pressure from the stresses and strains of daily life. Incidentally, the weather has been great. It is getting warmer and warmer every day. This is quite a change from the snow and cold of Metro Vancouver.

Federal report highlights B.C. as a champion in culture, arts, heritage and sport

ritish Columbia ranks highly among Canadian provinces in the strength and growth of its culture, arts, heritage and sport sectors, according to the latest Provincial and Territorial Culture Indicators report from Statistics Canada.

Culture GDP in B.C. totalled $7.2 billion in 2016. This was a 3.9% gain from the previous year and amounted to 2.9% of the total provincial economy.

The Village in Langley, B.C., is designed after models in the U.S. and the Netherlands. It will be the first of its kind in the province offering independent accommodations, amenities and programming in a secure environment to a small group of seniors with dementia, supported by an almost equal number of specially trained staff.Unlike long-term care facilities or large assisted living

complexes, the village will consist of six residences with only 12 units in each, housing a total of up to 78 people on the 2.8-hectare site in order to foster a tight-knit community. Project lead Elroy Jespersen said he saw a need for a facility where people didn't feel "locked in" and could dictate what they did and how they go about their day.That means going beyond providing for residents' basic needs like housing, food and physical health care, he said.

"We really have to focus on their emotional well being and really say what can we do to enhance that and keep them functioning as a valued member of our community in a purposeful way and contributing to their community," he said. The Village won't have strict routines and schedules, allowing residents to wake up and have breakfast when they please, and make use of a network of walkways, landscaping and gardens all within a secure perimeter.
