3 simple ways to improve your community (NC) Creating a happier, healthier neighbourhood can help turn your community into a truly great place to live. Here are some little things you can do around the house and in your everyday life to make a significant difference. 1. Keep a courteous attitude when driving. Traffic jams and drivers who don’t put their flashers on or cut you off without notice are all causes for the stress and frustrations that can build up on the road. Keeping calm and acting with civility will lower your stress levels and those of other drivers, which in turn can lower accident rates. 2. Lock your doors. Locking the doors to your house, office and car, and even locking your bicycle with a padlock, can greatly reduce theft rates. Make

sure not to leave valuable objects in sight, such as your computer on the counter or your GPS or wallet on the dashboard. 3. Control the risk of damage. Starting your dishwasher or laundry machines only when someone is at home keeping an eye on the devices helps reduce the risk of water damage or a fire hazard in your dryer. Removing softener sheets from your dryer and closing your washer taps after use can also save you serious headaches.

April brings child care fee relief to B.C. parents British Columbia parents with children in licensed care will start seeing child care savings of up to $350 a month as early as April, said Premier John Horgan. “Parents in every corner of B.C. will start seeing their child care bills go down next month,” said Premier Horgan. “These fee reductions will offer families relief, and help people, particularly women, return to work. No one should be forced to choose between child care and other family needs.” The child care fee reduction is available to families with children up to kindergarten age, who go to licensed child care and whose providers opt in.

line for child care providers to opt in to April’s fee reduction until April 20, 2018. After that date, providers can sign up for savings for future months at any time. The child care fee reduction will help providers to keep their program competitive with other programs in their community, and support the families in their programs by lowering their monthly child care costs. Those who choose to participate will receive an increase of 10% on top of their individual base funding to support operational expenses.

“Parents have been left to struggle with rising child care costs for too long,” said Minister of Children and Family Development Katrine Conroy. “The child care fee reduction is the first step toward bringing down sky-high “As early childhood educators, we child care costs so that families can carry a core belief that children and get ahead.” families, who are supported in the early years, have better outcomes as To date, providers have applied for fee they carry on in their journey,” said reductions for more than 18,000 chilSusan Hall-Ford, general manager dren, and more providers are opting in for the Douglas College Early Childto savings for families every day. How science protects Canadian wildlife (NC) Pesticides and crop biotechnology — also known as GMOs or genetically modified organisms — are being credited with preserving 35 million acres of Canadian wildlife habitat. These modern agricultural tools, perceived by many to be bad for people and the planet, are helping stave off a Canadian wildlife disaster. “If we decided to meet world demand for food and fibre from agricultural production by increasing the footprint of agriculture, the potential impact on habitat could be catastrophic,” explains Paul Thoroughgood, regional agrologist at Ducks Unlimited. For example, wetlands in the landscape sequester greenhouse gases, are hotspots for biodiversity, help mitigate flooding and serve as a line of defense against unintended runoff from farms.

PAGE 6

“We can really think of wetlands as the kidneys for the water that we drink,” says Thoroughgood. Feeding a growing world population that is estimated to reach 9.8 billion by 2050 while preserving valuable wetlands and habitat is a challenge, but the alternative is destroying habitat to produce the same amount of food. According to Thoroughgood, that’s where pesticides and biotechnology offer farmers tools to increase production on existing cultivated land, so there is no need to bring other land into food production. “Bringing 35 million acres into production that now serves as habitat would render that land to have very low habitat value. On most farms, the most important land from an ecological perspective is the land that’s not involved in crop production.”

Thousands more MRI exams to benefit British Columbians

T

o give people faster access to the diagnoses and care they need, Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, has announced that 37,000 more magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exams will be done throughout the province by the end of March 2019, compared to the previous year. Under the B.C. Surgical and Diagnostic Strategy, 225,000 MRI exams will be completed in 2018-19, up from 188,000 in 201718. To meet these ambitious targets, $11 million is being made available in the public health-care system to add resources and capacity. “This is a bold step to dramatically increase the number of MRI exams being done in B.C., and this coming year alone, the increase will be close to 20%,” said Dix. “We are delivering on our promise to restore services and find capacity in our public health-care system so that British Columbians don’t have to wait months and months for prescribed exams. We know that by rebuilding and expanding capacity in the public system, we will improve access to care and patient outcomes.”

cate referrals and appointments, and prevent wasted operating time, while also offering patients the earliest appointment available in a region, as appropriate; installing already-planned MRI machines; and adding additional capacity to the public system. In addition to increasing capacity, the Ministry of Health is working with health authorities to find ways to make sure referrals for MRI are the most appropriate diagnostic choice, and that the quality of exams are consistently high to ensure patient safety, and reduce the need to repeat the exams and take up more valuable time.

Scheer accepts offer of national security briefing

T

he Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, the Honourable Andrew Scheer, today responded to the offer of a briefing concerning the incident that saw a convicted attempted murderer attend official events during Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s trip to India. Mr. Scheer has accepted the offer and has informed the government that he will invite members of the Conservative caucus and media to the portion of the briefing that will cover non-classified information.

The Prime Minister blamed rogue elements within the Indian government for Jaspal Atwal’s presence in India, but since that time, the Indian government, Randeep Sarai, Jaspal Atwal and the Minister of Foreign Affairs have all refuted Justin Trudeau’s claims.”

“In correspondence with my Chief of Staff, the government confirmed that the information provided to journalists by Daniel Jean was not classified. In addition, the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness confirmed that the information provided to the media by the National Security Advisor did not contain “It’s becoming clear why Justin classified information,” said Scheer. Improved supports for youth leaving government care take effect April 1

Y

oung people transitioning out of government care can get more money for housing, health care, transportation and other living expenses as changes to the Agreements with Young Adults (AYA) program take effect April 1, 2018.

The cost of living in B.C. has risen 13% since 2009. Added funding and improvements to the AYA program are intended to lessen the burden on young people in care as they transition to independence.

The age limit for eligibility has increased by one year, to include youth, aged 19-26 years, inclusive (up to the day of their 27th birthday) and to align with the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program.

An AYA is available to youth between their 19th and 27th birthdays. In order to qualify for AYA funding, youth must have been in one of the following care arrangements on their 19th birthday:

The funding is available for the full calendar year, including during program breaks, to a maximum of 48 months, for youth enrolled in a multi-year educational or vocational program. Previously, funding was only provided to youth while school was in session. Youth can now get up to $1,250 per month, based on individual need. This is an increase of up to $250 over the previous monthly maximum of $1,000.

New Student Ranger Program launched

Y

oung people throughout British Columbia will have an opportunity to acquire a diverse range of job skills while working in the province’s spectacular natural environment, through the new BC Parks Student Ranger Program. This is the first program established with the proceeds that were generated from specialty BC Parks licence plate sales. “We are giving young adults a chance to gain important job skills in some of the most beautiful parks and protected areas British Columbia has to offer,” said George Heyman, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Strategy. “Student rangers will help protect sensitive ecosystems, while preserving the natural, cultural and historical values that British Columbians cherish.” Funded by the federal and provincial governments, the Student Ranger Program provides youth training and employment opportunities for 48 young adults in B.C.’s parks and protected areas, with a 30% Indigenous hiring target. The program, which is now accepting applications, offers hands-on work experience in a diverse range of projects related to conservation, recreation, community outreach and Indigenous relations.

Student rangers will focus on a wide variety of meaningful projects, including: Ecosystem restoration and invasive species control; Trail building and maintenance; Conservation monitoring projects; and Public outreach.

Eight teams of student rangers will work in regions around the province, including Prince George, Smithers, Kamloops, Victoria (Goldstream Provincial Park), Black Creek, Manning Park, North Vancouver and Squamish. Funding supports better learning environments for B.C. students

tudents throughout British Columbia will benefit from safer, more efficient and comfortable schools, thanks to $198 million in maintenance funding for school districts.

“Students deserve to learn in schools that are well maintained and operating the way they should. That’s why we’ve boosted funding to these programs by more than $20 million over last year,” said Education Minister Rob Fleming. “We are supporting B.C. schools with this funding, so students, teachers and school district staff can focus their energy to where it matters most – in the classroom.”

mechanical upgrades to improve the heating, cooling and ventilation of classrooms, or safety upgrades to fire alarm and sprinkler systems. Each year, the Carbon Neutral Capital Program funds $5 million for upgrades that cut greenhouse-gas emissions and boost energy efficiency. Three of the 19 schools receiving funding this year are using it to install solar panel systems. This year’s $12.5-million investment under the School Bus Replacement Program is buying 93 new and replacement buses in 28 school districts. The replacement buses will make travelling to school safer and more reliable for students. The new buses will add to districts’ fleets, allowing them to better serve students with new routes.

Under the School Enhancement Program, all school districts will receive a portion of this year’s $65-million investment. The program is funding 176 separate projects that upgrade a wide range of building systems. These funding programs build on the For example, schools might receive Annual Facilities Grant (AFG), which

flows to districts annually for routine school maintenance costs. This year, the total AFG is $115.5 million, an increase of $5 million over last year. This is the first increase to the AFG since 2004-05. Many of the projects being funded through these programs will benefit schools by saving them money on electricity, natural gas, fuel and

maintenance. Those savings can be reinvested in classrooms to support student learning. “Our government recognizes that students will be better off in an education system that is properly resourced,” said Fleming. “Increasing the funding to these programs is the first step to address the backlog of school maintenance in this province.”

Something can begin to stir in your mind about action, which would be best taken when it comes to future goals. You could begin to gain a clearer picture of the commitments you would need to be prepared to make. There can be a tendency to overlook the amount of finer detail involved but you will find out soon enough.

Activities with others but particularly within a group of people can be most enjoyable. It could turn into something bigger than you initially expect. Be cautious about anything you are pressed to agree with or any person who is very strong about their ideas as it will be difficult to gauge exactly what they are looking for.

You can feel challenged with what might seem never ending matters to deal with on a daily basis and that there is no conclusion in sight. Rather than worry too much about this you should take an optimistic view on it working out satisfactorily. You do have support from people who have authority, so it will all work out eventually.

Anything you are uncertain about when it comes to the expectations of others, you should simply ask questions. If they don’t want to tell you it will be made very clear but this may not necessarily be the way things go. Anything practical that needs to be dealt with or impacts upon things on a daily basis can be sorted quite easily.

The Full Moon this week occurs in your sign. This can generate much self- awareness when it comes to your own position and that of others. You could feel overwhelmed by others right now but much is up to the way you decide to respond. You can be strong-minded about the manner in which you want to establish matters

It is important you get the right information that will enable you to get on top of any situation that makes you feel like a slave to circumstance. This is challenging you to put a structure in place that will be enduring but also something that you can have greater control over. If money is involved it is possible to improve the situation.

You will enjoy being in any situation that is either generous to you or allows you to create some benefit. You can express practical, down to earth ideas without seeming out of touch. This might be necessary, especially if there is any expectation for you to be putting money into something has been lacking boundaries.

You will be fired up to get things in place so that what follows on has a good foundation to operate from. Your vision won’t be bound but when it comes to others involved you will need to be persistent in leading the way so that matters take to path you want. This is because they can wander off the track quite easily.

There will be more to handle than you initially anticipate so be very careful about committing yourself to things when it seems you have plenty of time available. You need to deal with matters that involve you personally and require your attention and leave any opportunities for social involvement floating until the last minute.

There is a lot of focus on your finances with some aspects having the opportunity to work to your benefit. Any situation where you are owed money could come to a head and you should not hesitate to take appropriate action to state your priorities or to express what you expect. The final conclusion might be slow but it is positive.

You may not know how to take what becomes obvious about somebody else. You need to put your focus on your own position and be very clear and definite, in your own mind, when it comes to any responsibilities you are willing to accept. What will give you pleasure in the long term may need to be taken into account as well.

Tension can arise through somebody else taking a dominant approach, especially if they are of the opinion you should either be more responsible or enter into greater levels of commitment. There could be more to handle on a daily basis than you imagined but for the moment this is not likely to prove troublesome to you.

Spread the Word to End the Word Campaign

he Spread the Word to End the Word Campaign is continuing for the forth year in Abbotsford and has received wonderful support throughout the community. The campaign’s goal is to promote awareness about the harmful effects of the R-Word (Retard or Retarded) on those with an intellectual disability. Roshan Gosal, the Community Outreach Coordinator for Special Olympics- Abbotsford, gathered student leaders representing each of the 11 high schools in the city along with Special Olympics athletes ( Katie Marchbank, James Clifford and Paige Norton ) and Mayor Henry Braun for a photo opportunity. This year Roshan was honoured to also have the UFV

President Jackie Hogan and UFV President Select Joanne MacLean join the group for a photo shoot at City Hall. 5 ways to tap into the benefits of volunteering (NC) Yearround, volunteers enrich their communities, help their neighbours and make positive changes. Every April, we take time during National Volunteer Week to recognize the enormous impact of volunteers in their communities.

• Consider how much time you have to give. Research shows that people who volunteer feel as though they have more free time. Nonetheless, it is important to think about how much time you can spare and it is worth reviewing your weekly schedule before making a commitment.

Some studies estimate that the hard work of volunteers delivers billions of dollars in benefits to towns and cities across Canada. At the same time, volunteers themselves benefit. Some believe their age or health prevents them from being an organ donor. In actuality, age does not preclude someone from becoming a donor, and each potential donor is assessed at the time of death for medical suitability. Others may not have registered under the misguided assumptions of religious restrictions, but the fact is, most major religions support organ and tissue donation and may even encourage it, Find out more and register at www. beadonor.ca. as it can save a life. Working with Big B, Aamir a learning experience : Prabhudheva Prabhudheva feels blessed to have taught dance moves to two of Indian film industry's stalwarts, Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan, for "Thugs of Hindostan", and says it was more of a "learning process" for him. The actordirector has choreographed two songs in the Vijay Krishna Acharya-directed film, which also features Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh. "I am lucky to do that song with Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan in the same frame. It is a learning process... Everyone can learn and observe things from them, the way they do scenes, the way they act, walk, or say dialogues. "They both believe in putting tremendous amount of hard work. They are a source of inspiration," Prabhudheva said. He is known as the Michael Jackson of India, but so far he has not directed any dance-based movie in Bollywood. The reason why it has not happened yet as the ace choreographer finds it extremely tough to helm a dance film. "I have seen the hard work that Remo D'Souza puts in the dance film and that time only I decided I must not do it. "He is very calm and composed person, I am not.

I will never stop working in Bengali films: Raima Sen Actress Raima Sen, who is doing a balancing act between Bollywood, Tollywood and digital entertainment, says she will continue working in Bengali cinema. She says working in Bengali cinema not only teaches her the craft but also gives her a chance to collaborate with great filmmakers. “I will never stop working in Bengali films; because I have learned a lot of things as an actor from the Bengali film industry. I am fortunate to work with some of the iconic film directors like late Rituparno Ghosh who taught me a lot,” Raima said. “I have worked with many young filmmakers in Bengal where the stories are very good, women-oriented films and very progressive interesting work…Bengali films have given me a lot,” she added.

I am a very aggressive person. I take decisions very quickly. Remo is good at helming things, I don't think I am," he says. Having directed potboilers such as "Wanted" and "Rowdy Rathore" among others, Prabhudheva says producers only want him to direct action movies. "... If I tell producers that we will do a dance film, they tell me it is a good idea but it should have more action in it. They want me to do action films," he says.

ShahRukh is best 'newcomer' directors can ever have : Aanand Rai Filmmaker Aanand L. Rai, who has collaborated with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan for the upcoming film Zero, says the superstar has energy and enthusiasm of a newcomer despite a career of over 25 years in filmdom. "I am fascinated to see how a man with 25 years of a career, with so much success, fame, so many blockbusters, can still can have childlike energy. He did not burn out."He is the most obedient actor I have seen ever in my life. His energy on set is like a young boy doing his first film. I want to say that he is the best newcomer a director will get on the set... In fact, that is something I am trying to learn from him," Rai said.Zero is a multi-starrer, which also features

Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif. Shah Rukh plays a dwarf in the movie Rai said the strenuous shoot of the film was made smooth by the talented cast."Physically the shoot was very exhausting but the whole team had a great time working towards it because of the fact that I worked with a bunch of enthusiastic actors, and Khan saab is one of them."He surprises me to an extent that at times it scares me to think whether as a director I am able to match up to his level of talent. He is an extraordinary man, not just as an actor but also as a human," said the director.

Being a woman in today's world is super power : Sonakshi Actress Sonakshi Sinha, who walked the ramp for Bombay Times Fashion Week 2018, believes that being a woman is a super power in today's world. Sonakshi walked the ramp at the fashion extravaganza here for designer Nandita Mahtani, said a statement. "Just being a woman is today's world is a super power. We adopt so many roles in so many walks of our life. Being a woman is our super power," said Sonakshi on the sidelines of the gala. On what she would advise when it comes to fashion quotient, she said: "Dress comfortably, dress cool and drink lots of water to deal with the approaching, scorching summer."

Criticism has nothing to do with country, but society : Sunny Leone Hate mails and criticism were part of what Sunny Leone faced much before she made the transition from an adult film star to Bollywood. She says the brickbats didn't come her way because she is in India, but due to the mindset of the society as a whole. Sunny's life story is set to be unveiled in an upcoming biopic Karenjit Kaur - The Untold Story of Sunny Leone."Many people have the misconception that people started criticising me when I decided to come to India, but that is not true. I started getting hate mails and criticism when I was around 21 years old."So it has nothing to do with the country, but society in

general. That was the first time I faced real hatred," Sunny said. The show Karenjit Kaur, which will soon start streaming on the OTT platform ZEE5, revolves around the journey of Sunny, who was born as Karenjit Kaur in a middle class Sikh family in Canada. It will trace her transition from being a little girl to becoming an adult film actress and from there to her rise in Bollywood."Like many families, there are some problems in our family too. There is love, hate, emotional moments in all our lives, but our parents protected my brother and me from all the negativity, as much as they could."But at the age of 21, when you see people are saying really nasty things about you, it affects you so badly... I was vulnerable and broken from within emotionally," said the actress, whose sensational dance moves have added glamour to songs like "Baby doll", "Laila main laila" and "Pink lips".On how her parents dealt with the hate that came her way, Sunny said:
