Our grade 6 class students have created an Equity backpack that we hope to team with educators and schools across BC so that together we can make a way forward when it comes to Equity and Inclusion. This Equity Backpack helps students navigate the important topics of Equity and Inclusion. The Equity Backpack reminds students that every person has a story and that every story is important. Students were able to listen to each other’s stories and find connections with each other’s life experiences, thus creating a strong sense of belonging and community. Students learned ways and the importance of taking time to celebrate each other’s uniqueness. Our class of grade 6 students interviewed special guests such as Dr. Godden, Dr. Hardman, Dr. Dharamshi, Dr. Sivia, Mr. and Mrs. Orth and Dr. Britton asking them tough questions. The questions included “How do you become a better person than you were yesterday?” “What does the word identity mean to you?” “How do you make the young and our elders feel like they belong?”

2021 trends people are talking about (NC) Every year new or improved ways of taking care of ourselves become popular. Chances are you may have heard of self-care or yoga, whether you’ve tried it or not. Here are few of the themes making a splash in health and wellness in 2021. Gym comes home After years of enjoying the studio experience for activities like spin class, at-home gyms and workout routines are a top trend this year. Spending more time at home due to the pandemic is helping people get creative about getting active. Self-care as community care Another lesson brought home by the pandemic was our need for community. There’s more understanding now that taking care of ourselves includes connecting with the people we care about. We can all lift each other’s spirits, even if that means meeting up online or connecting through a phone call.

reational cannabis use, due to its legal status. Cannabis producers are now creating products that aim to focus on the users’ well-being, with a focus on CBD and strains to help tailor your experience. If you’re buying cannabis or cannabis products, remember that legal cannabis products are only sold through retailers authorized by your provincial or territorial government. For products with THC, look for the excise stamp on the package. The stamp guarantees the product was produced by a federally authorized licensed producer, which ensures the highest health and safety standards, and that the product has accurate THC levels and is free from other harmful substances. Legal cannabis products will also include risk of use information. If a website claims they ship anywhere in Canada, it is an illegal vendor and your shipment could be seized.

if you pay attention.” The video will be released as part of The Reach’s online Family Day celebration at thereach.ca/athome on February 13. This project is supported in part by BC Family Day Video – “Black Hair: the Province of British Columbia. A (Long) Hair Story” – February 13 Mental Health and Anti-Black RacOn BC Family Day weekend, tune into this family-friendly video highlighting Black hair culture. Join emerging filmmaker Jerusalem Amosha as she explores both historical and contemporary Black hair practices with stylists from here in the Fraser Valley. Amosha explains her inspiration for the film, and why celebrating Black hair expression in the Fraser Valley is so important: “There’s a lot of pride in Black hair culture because of what it can indicate, like social status, tribe, identity…so this isn’t just ‘hair.’ The pressure to fit in with mainstream white society to camouflage ourselves, is slavery’s impact on Black hair. It can tell you who I am

The past year has been a challenging one, with recent events amplifying the stark reality of systemic racism experienced by minority groups around the world and right here in the Fraser Valley. This virtual Mental Health and Anti-Black Racism Panel Discussion will bring together Black mental health professionals from across the region to discuss the challenges of today’s mental health landscape and strategies to help you in your mental health journey. Visit thereach.ca closer to the date for details about registration and participating panelists.

Charan Gill leaves a legacy of courage, justice and solidarity: BCFED Our province’s labour movement joins British Columbians everywhere mourning the death of Charan Gill. We will always remember his courage, warmth and compassion, along with his lifelong commitment to justice. Co-founding the Canadian Farmworkers Union took extraordinary courage, vision and an unshakeable belief in the power of people working together for a greater good. He, Raj Chouhan and the farmworkers they organized stood their ground against bitter opposition from wealthy, powerful forces. They prevailed, dramatically improving the laws and working conditions governing farm work in our province. That same bravery allowed Charan to stand up to neo-Nazis and the KKK, stemming their growth here with the creation of the British Columbia Organization to Fight Racism. And his faith in collective action led him to found what has become the Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society, an invaluable lifeline for the South Asian community, new immigrants, seniors, farmworkers, women and at-risk youth to this day.

My Journey to Canada: Part 21 As our community has grown and prospered, so have the problems affecting it. These include alcoholism, domestic violence as well as the misuse and abuse of Canada’s lenient laws and policies. These things are not confined only to our community. Other communities also face the same kind of issues. However, the growing issue of gangs, drugs and youth violence seems to be one of the continuing major concerns in our community. Recent carnage on our streets has again brought this issue to the forefront. As an educator and an active member of our community I have a very special corner for our youth. When I moved to Richmond in 1990, the issue of our youth getting into trouble with the law was just beginning. It reached such a point during the next few years that we were losing our youth to drugs and violence almost every week. The mainstream media was headlining these problems in their major newscasts. That prompted some of our concerned community leaders to get involved and do something about it. It was a privilege for me to be a part of that group of community leaders coming to-gether in order to address this problem.

2004 was a good start in this regard. This was as a result of strong lobbying by our media and the community leadership. Later on, this task force was expanded and renamed Coordinate Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU -B.C.) Since its creation, this task force has done a commendable job both at the prevention and intervention levels. Though a lot has been achieved yet the basic problem is still there. Our young men continue to be victims of this carnage on our streets. In this regard, the role played by the IndoCanadian media continues to be very beneficial, especially in educating the parents. As a matter of fact, without exception, our media-both electronic and print- has been playing a leading role in creating more awareness about making healthy choices by our young people. Also, a number of organizations have been working tirelessly in this regard. Nearly every day one hears about good parenting skills, spending quality time with our children, taking interest in our youth’s schooling and sports etc.

The youth violence issue goes a long way back- to early 1990s. Since then, our community has lost a large number of our young men, mostly in their twenties and thirties, to drugs and violence. For quite some time the community was in denial. Then the blame game was on. The police was blaming the community for lack of co-operation and the community was blaming the police for not doing enough to stop this insanity happening on our streets and neighborhoods. Finally, having gone through denial and blaming, the community decided During the past few years, the dynamto do something about it. ics of our community and problems It is a credit to a number of dedicated facing it have changed drastically. individuals, representatives of vari- Consequently, a number of new orous Gurdwaras, organizations work- ganizations have come forward to ing with youth, police and concerned deal with these issues. elowna Mayor Colin Basran and Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps, co-chairs of the B.C. Urban Mayors’ Caucus, released the following statement following meetings this week with Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Housing David Eby and Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Sheila Malcolmson to discuss strengthening mental health and substance use supports in the face of the ongoing homelessness and opioid crises. “On behalf of the B.C. Urban Mayors’ Caucus, we would like to thank the Ministers for meeting this week to begin to plan how we can work together to accelerate B.C.’s response to addressing the mental health, substance use and homelessness crises. It’s great to see the priorities laid out in our Blueprint for British Columbia’s Urban Future reflected in the Ministers’ mandate letters.

on the Island, one in the North, one in the Interior and two in the Lower Mainland. “This five-site pilot project is the necessary first step in filling a gap in the continuum of housing and health care to meet the needs of vulnerable people who require mental health and substance use supports and services

unique to their needs. Some of them may need extra supports on a pathway to recovery. Some of them may need to be in this kind of care longer term. This pilot project is an opportunity to learn on a small-scale, five-site basis and then – building on the learnings – to create additional sites in communities across the province. “The challenges we are seeing in our communities are expanding faster than the solutions. Our vulnerable residents are at risk without proper health supports to meet their complex needs. Our residents and business owners are frustrated. And economic recovery from the pandemic will be compromised without action now. It’s time to try new approaches.

“We are seeing historic investments from the Province to build more affordable housing, which is serving the needs of many people in our communities. Yet even with this unprecedented effort, people with complex needs are falling through the cracks and aren’t being served by the supportive housing models and programs currently available. “As Mayors of B.C.’s largest urban “That’s why the B.C. What is the Public Guardian and Trustee (PGT) and what role does the PGT play in an infant’s ICBC Claim?

child who is hurt in a motor vehicle accident caused by another person’s negligence is entitled to personal injury compensation. In BC, anyone under the age of 19 is referred to as an “infant” or a “minor” when discussing ICBC claims. The legal process for a child’s ICBC claim will involve the Public Guardian and Trustee (“PGT”). What is the BC PGT? The Public Guardian and Trustee of British Columbia is a corporation established under the Public Guardian and Trustee Act. The PGT carries out a number of services in BC. When it comes to infant ICBC claims, the PGT’s broad mandate is to protect the legal and financial interests of children under the age of 19 years. What role does the PGT play in an infant’s ICBC claim?

Lawyer If a Simpson, Thomas & Ascourt sociates action must be started before the child turns 19, an adult must bring the lawsuit on the child’s behalf. That adult—in many cases, the child’s parent—is known as the “litigation guardian.” In some situations, there is no adult who is willing or capable to act on the injured child’s behalf (for example, if the child’s parent was also seriously injured in the accident, or the parent was at-fault for the accident). In such cases, the PGT can be appointed to act as the infant’s litigation guardian.

Several factors will influence the exact nature of the PGT’s role in an infant’s ICBC claim, including whether settlement is reached and for how much, who was at fault for the accident, and the severity of injuries (e.g., a sprain or soft tissue injury that heals with no lasting functional impairment vs. a permanent, serious brain injury). I hope this is the year of big-screen entertainers : Vaani Kapoor

Actress Vaani Kapoor was last seen on screen in the 2019 blockbuster War, and is all set to be seen in upcoming biggies Shamshera, BellBottom, and Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui. She feels lucky that all three films are theatrical releases.‘I hope this will be the year of big-screen entertainers! People are waiting for the virus to be under control and with the vaccines, the confidence of people will slowly build. They would want to go back to doing things they used to. People are missing many experiences that made them happy and we are a society that thrives on community hangouts," Vaani said. She added: "Community celebrations will come back in a big way, and for Indians going to a theatre to watch a movie with friends and family is a huge thing. That's going to make a big comeback. They would want to come back to soak in an experience."Vaani feels new content will play an important role in bringing people back to the theatres, as she expects the taste of the audience to have changed during the pandemic."They (audience) would want to watch films that are new, fresh and clutter-breaking. The taste and preference of the audience must have changed because of the coronavirus and they would only want to come to theatres to watch something that tells them a grand, new, compelling story! So, I'm really confident that the films that are lined up for release will do that," she said. The actress added: "I'm lucky that I have three films Shamshera, BellBottom, and Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui which are all theatricals because of the subject and the experience that they are offering to the audience. I can't wait for people to watch these films in theatres because they will truly entertain them to their core."

Zareen Khan made her Bollywood debut with Salman Khan in Anil Sharma's Veer in 2010. She was also seen with Khan in a special song in Ready and acted in films like Housefull 2, Hate Story 3, Aksar 2, and 1921. A lot of people compared her with Katrina Kaif due to their resemblance.Talking about the same in an interview with Navbharat Times, Khan spoke about the same and said, "People come in the industry to create an identity for themselves and not to be someone else's lookalike or shadow. I have struggled to make a place for myself in Bollywood for 11 years, but till date, people tag me as Katrina's lookalike. No filmmaker wants to work with a lookalike or duplicate."She added, "I think I have a universal face. I apparently look like a lot of people. Some call me Pooja Bhatt's resemblance, some say Preity Zinta, some even state I am Sunny Leone's lookalike. I don't understand why don't I ever look like Zareen Khan to people."She also spoke about the media and how being tagged as Kaif's lookalike spoiled things for her. She revealed, "Now media is media. The media has to know everything ahead of time and because of this, all my work got spoiled. The media told the news that the girl in the film Veer looks like Katrina Kaif and it spoiled all my work. This news has led to a feed in the audience that the girl in Veer looks like Katrina and thus people were not given a chance to create their own opinion about me."

typecast is the hero in Bollywood, who in their over 30 to 36 years' career do only one role. Thank god I got the opportunity to do different roles. If I am doing a Manto' then I am also doing a Thackeray'. If I am playing a police officer in 'Raat Akeli Hai', at the same time there is Serious Men', too," Nawazuddin said. The actor has three films lined up in the coming months as of now -- "No Land's Man", the rom-com "Jogira Sara Ra Ra" and "Bole Chudiyan". He says the focus continues to be on "doing a different character". "I have done Photograph' and I have also done Kick'. So, I think the opportunity to play various roles the industry gave me is amazing," he added. He feels the there is some "misconception about typecast" when it comes to our films. "The hero gets typecast. If you see in the last 40 years, a hero has been doing one kind of role. There is only one kind of gesture and posture. There is one kind of costume and expression. Everything is of one kind. The one who does the same things get typecast," he said. Nawazuddin feels grateful that he did not headline a "formula film" as a hero. "Thank god I did not become a hero -- as in, a hero in the typical formula film. If I do that then I will leave this profession because I will get bored doing the same thing. So, thanks to the industry that they saw me in various roles. They want to see me in different roles and they will keep seeing me in different roles," he said.

I have faced my share of trolling, but I don’t respond to trolls with disrespect : Diya Mirza

Actor and environmentalist Diya Mirza says she has embraced social media wholeheartedly and is utilizing the medium to talk about the work that she does and the causes she supports. Trolls, don't really bother the actress!"For me, social media has been such a powerful instrument to talk about the things that I want to and for most of the advocacy work that I do. I have never looked at it as something that is harmful. Of course, misinformation is extremely harmful, and there are all kinds of ruthless people who are disrespectful. But for the most parts, I have managed to have extremely positive interactions with people across all platforms," said Diya Mirza.Besides acting career, Dia Mirza has been at the forefront of conversations about climate change. She made her acting debut in 2001 with Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein. Today, she is also a producer and UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador and United Nations Secretary-General Advocate for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS).Talking about dealing with social media trolls and online abuse, Dia Mirza said, “There have been some phases where I have faced my share of trolling, but I don’t respond to trolls with disrespect, instead, I choose to not engage with them beyond a point. I feel that when you are clear about what you are doing and are honest, then what people say shouldn’t bother you, and it doesn’t affect me at all.”A few days ago, filmmaker Zoya Akhtar had shared the experiences that made her leave the social media platform Facebook entirely.

How to use your TFSA in challenging times (NC) Tax season is quickly approaching, but this year may look a little different for some. With the uncertainty of the pandemic, nearly half of Canadians say that saving for a rainy day is more important to them right now than retirement savings, according to a recent survey by TD. Life is beginning to change gear from where it has sat since late June. Focus on your finances to early March and don’t be tempted to do any impulsive spending right now. It could be difficult to clearly define what your priorities need to be. This won’t become clear before mid March. There will still be restrictions to deal with.

Mars has just moved into your sign where it will remain until 4th March. This will end a long period of frustration from late June. Your energy level will lift and so will your self-confidence – you can begin to feel a new person. There can be different responsibilities to consider but don’t attempt to bed them down until mid March.

Your focus will naturally turn to the future and what is important in the long term. To be able to get there it will be essential to let things go or clear away the unnecessary, otherwise, it will be a source of limitation. You probably realise that. If you work on this to early March you will be in a decisive position by mid March.

New directions associated with other people, even new people coming into your life has much more to it than is evident on the surface. You could feel it is a welcome change with a degree of excitement attached. They can be far more determined than you suspect. Don’t modify your priorities to accommodate their wishes.

You can be under a lot of pressure to early March, some of which will come up suddenly and will not be evident right now. Something about daily routines needs to take a new direction so that you can be more efficient and effective. You can enjoy making these changes to early February. Take care of your health as well.

You can feel freed up from the expectations of others that may have weighed heavily since late June. There is the opportunity to look at future possibilities from a perspective you had never imagined. This could be at odds with daily routines or obligations. You need to be honest about what is too much from now to mid March.

Optimistic plans, particularly if they are connected to leisure or pleasure could run into unexpected difficulty because it doesn’t please somebody else. This might make you realise that the time has come to put plans into place in a new way – one that suits what you want and bypass their pressure. Let them take it or leave it.

Relationships with others will be interesting to early March. There will be a degree of unpredictability or rebelliousness on their part. It can be a new normal that you will need to deal with that can alter the structure of your life. Much can be based on new ideas. By being open to them you could establish some stimulating interaction.

There will be a lot to think about, communicate about or find information on from now to mid March. Get to work on getting good routines in place up to early March. This can also include health and exercise. You can be easily distracted and while this may not cause too much of a problem now, you will regret any time wasting.

The New Moon falls into your sign with Pluto, generating a powerful undertone to any new beginnings on a personal level that will have a strong transformative effect. Venus is in your sign until the 2nd February encouraging you to pursue whatever you feel will bring peace, balance and harmony even if you need to rebel in some way.

You could have a sense of urgency about moving forward towards getting a solid underlying plan in place. There are still some unknown factors that will unfold over the next month. This can alter the way you are thinking about things right now and up to early March. It will be mid March before final solutions become obvious.

New directions can take shape either with friends or a group of people that you are involved with. This could equally relate to joining a new group in which sharing of ideas or learning something new could be the theme. Be mindful of only taking on as much as you can easily manage, otherwise you could feel restricted later.
