BSAFE for employees means safety Expanded supports to help families for everyone coping with mental illness

The Province is launching a COVID-19 safety certificate program, called BSAFE, for workers in the tourism and hospitality sectors to increase consumer confidence as businesses start to return to more normal operations in accordance with BC’s Restart plan. BSAFE stands for BC Safety Assured For Everyone. “This program will empower employees, visitors and communities to have confidence a business is following health and safety best practices

as we work to slowly reopen while following the rules and putting an end to COVID-19 restrictions in B.C.,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “The program was a call to action from the Tourism Task Force to clearly demonstrate to visitors that B.C. is a safe place to travel. BSAFE supports our restart and recovery efforts as we look forward to exploring our province again very soon.” The Province allocated $640,000 to develop the program and provide the training for workers in the tourism and hospitality sectors. B.C. organizations participating in the training program will receive a decal to make it easy for visitors to identify that staff have taken BSAFE training. “This program is well timed and will be beneficial for workers as we move forward carefully with our four-step BC’s Restart – a plan that focuses on ensuring the health and safety of British Columbians at every touchpoint,”

said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation. “Restoring B.C.’s tourism and hospitality sectors is critical for our economy, and this program will help workers do that safely for everyone – now and in the future.” The Province worked with go2HR to develop and deliver the BSAFE program. Leaders in the tourism and hospitality sectors were engaged during the development stage to ensure the program is practical and effective for employees. BSAFE course participants will be trained to: understand COVID-19 primary modes of transmission, high risk areas/ activities and the importance of consistent application of controls and measures;

British Columbians who have family members living with serious mental illness, including schizophrenia, will benefit from expanded educational supports to help families thrive. During World Schizophrenia Awareness Week, May 23-29, government is announcing more than $1 million to provide families throughout B.C., and particularly those in rural and underserved communities, with better access to educational programs and supports that help them understand and cope with their family member’s mental health challenges. The resources are being developed and led by the BC Schizophrenia Society (BCSS).

More than 900 new families connected with BCSS seeking support and information in the past year. “We know families urgently need support when a loved one is experiencing a mental health crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only increased this need,” said Faydra Aldridge, chief executive officer, BC Schizophrenia Society. “We are grateful to the Province for this investment that improves access to vital supports for families supporting people living with serious mental illness in B.C.”

With this investment, the Province has provided over $4 million to the BC Schizophrenia Society since 2016. “I am thankful that these programs will now be available to families in all parts of the province,” said Michele K., who has a son diagnosed with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder. “People like me need to know that they aren’t the only one who has a sibling, parent or child living with mental illness. I feel much more able to help my family member after receiving support from the BC Schizophrenia Society – just knowing they are there, listening to us, understanding the challenges we face and advocating for us is a calming relief.”

STUDENT-LED BYO APP PROMOTES SUSTAINABILITY

F

rom disposable masks and takeout containers to packaging for online shopping, the pandemic has only added the amount of waste we create. A new student-led project aims to help reduce waste by motivating individuals to bring their own mugs (BYO) when visiting their local café. BYO is the brainchild of Simon Fraser University business student Priscilla Lam and University of British Columbia land and food systems student Angelica Tso.

joined the project team to help make their idea a reality. “This is not just about bringing your own cup – it’s about shifting the mindset towards a circular economy and different ways of thinking about consumerism and our consumer culture,” says Tso. “We need to move away from that fast and disposable economic structure towards an economy where we can internalize our impact, how we can change and realize our actions do have an impact.”

B.C. health authorities have not mandated a pause on reusable mug use during the pandemic. According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, businesses may choose to accept reusable beverage cups that employees handle, depending on store policy. As vaccinations increase and health officials continue to lift restrictions, it’s likely that more cafes will update “Bringing your own cup is a small their policies, adapting to current step but when it’s backed by a com- level of health risk. munity it becomes a larger movement With that in mind the future looks and encourages more people to embright for sustainable business inibrace reuse culture,” she adds. tiatives such as BYO, particularly as BYO is a mobile app-based program new City of Vancouver bylaws for that allows individuals to track how businesses to charge fees on singlemany cups they’ve saved by choosing use cups are scheduled to come into to use a reusable mug and put those effect next year. The city also plans savings towards planting trees. to ban plastic shopping bags in 2022 For every reusable mug purchase and require businesses to charge a fee through the app, five cents will go for paper bags. Given life during a pandemic, Lam says “it can feel really overwhelming to think about sustainability or for people to believe they can make a positive change. What we want to do with BYO is to cultivate individual impacts towards something that’s more collective, tangible and visible.”

In Vancouver alone, the city estimates that 2.6 million paper cups are thrown away every week. Disposable cups, lids and sleeves are also one of the most commonly littered items on Vancouver streets. More than two million plastic bags, 2.6 million paper coffee cups, and countless foam takeout food containers are thrown out each week in Vancouver. Following a successful pilot, the team hopes to continue running BYO as a social enterprise that promotes sustainability and waste reduction.

WorkSafeBC OHSR Changes a Welcome Step Towards Accommodation of Sikh Turban: WSO

T

he World Sikh Organization of Canada welcomes the amendments to Part 8 of the Occupational Health & Safety Regulation (OHSR) relating to safety headgear. Section 8.11 of the OHSR required safety headgear to be worn in any work area where there is a danger of head injury however the regulation was being applied as a blanket requirement resulting in Sikh workers who wear the dastaar (turban) being excluded from workplaces, even where accommodation was possible.

Which Generations of Drivers Are More Likely to be Involved in a Car Accident?

Lawyers at Simpson, Thomas & Associates, Surrey Office Phone: (604) 591-8885 Certain generations of drivers are at an increased risk of being in a major car accident. Surrey lawyers at Simpson, Thomas & Associates prepared this article to examine the issue of age as a risk factor for motor vehicle accidents. Younger and Older Drivers Are The Most Dangerous on The Roads Teens tend to get a bad rap and are thought of as the most dangerous drivers. While it is true that young drivers (those under the age of 25) have the highest crash rates, Canadian and US statistics indicate that crash rates for people age 70 and older are similar. Overall, young drivers and older drivers are involved in more car accidents than any other age group, and seniors and younger drivers (especially young male drivers) tend to pay the highest car accident insurance premiums.

Why Are Younger and Older Drivers More Prone to Car Accidents? Driving is a highly complex task that requires the integration of visual information with cognitive and motor skills. There are several reasons why younger and older drivers are more prone to major accidents. For example, younger drivers are inexperienced behind the wheel and their brains are still developing; both of those factors can make teens in particular less able to assess danger and more likely to engage in risky driving behaviour such as speeding or reckless driving. Older drivers are more likely to experience age-related impairments that impede their driving ability, such as slowed reflexes or response time, or medical conditions that compromise vision, hearing, mobility (e.g. muscle or joint stiffness that make it difficult to shoulder check) or cognition (e.g., Alzheimer’s or dementia). Who is Most at Risk for Serious Injuries or Fatal Car Accidents? We have considered the issue of which generation of drivers are most likely to cause car accidents, but what age group is the most at risk of being injured or

PAGE 16

killed as a result of a car accident? Canadian statistics show that adults age 24 to 35 are the most likely to suffer serious injuries, whether they were the driver or passenger in a major accident. (Surrey lawyers at our firm have previously discussed catastrophic injury claims and have compiled these FAQs about brain injuries and spinal injuries for those who have been seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident). Though adults aged 24 to 35 are most likely to be seriously injured, older drivers (that is, those over the age of 65) are more likely to die as a result of a motor vehicle accident, likely because they are more fragile or have other health conditions (see here for more information on ICBC claims for fatal accidents). Get Advice Surrey/Delta, Abbotsford, and Vancouver lawyers at Simpson, Thomas & Associates are available if you or a loved one has been injured or killed in a motor vehicle accident. You can come up with some inventive solutions when it comes to finances required for anything you want to put in place. You ideas can be clever, yet practical. This can also apply to conversations or agreements that you might need to enter into. It all may take more time than you initially anticipate to arrive at a final conclusion.

The New Moon this week occurs in your sign providing you with the opportunity to take new directions with something important to you on a personal level. It may also bring an opportunity you do not expect. You could be unusually forthright with something you have to say. There maybe the need to deal with technology as well.

Mental clarity when it comes to future goals worth pursuing may make you realise that what somebody else expects is not necessarily for you. Don’t expect to have all of the answers just yet. Some sort of initial commitment may be necessary from now until late July. This may not become rock solid until January to May next year.

New opportunities to take action on something that is an important priority to you can present itself quite surprisingly. This may involve a group of people in some way. Somebody who is in a position to support you will willingly do so. This might require some behind the scenes communication. It will be one step at a time.

Don’t presume there to be a totally straightforward path when it comes to any new commitments involving other people. It would be wise of you to verbalise what is important to you. Exactly what others expect from their connection to you will be difficult to know just now. This could become more obvious from late July.

You are in a good position to streamline daily routines by dropping anything that takes too much time. This can alter your commitments mainly because you will focus on your priorities more. Activity with others will increase significantly to late July. This could also include forming beneficial relationships and gaining recognition.

want to refuse but you will need to know how this could be put into place successfully. Make room for them to change their mind up to mid July.

Some very constructive exchange of ideas between you and others can occur. This can involve some sort of underlying change of structure for you up to late July. It can take all of this time to get something fully sorted to your satisfaction. Be careful about being too generous of yourself and ending up with most of the work.

Being diligent with work that needs to be done can bring some stable financial results. You could also generate financial improvement through taking a closer look at your spending. Changes on a pleasurable or social level could bring new people into your life that can be different to normal but interesting at the same time.

Commit yourself to anything you think you might enjoy. It could take until mid July to either fully find out or settle yourself into it. You could suddenly find the energy to get to work on something you want to restructure. This could include matters to do with home and family. You need to be mindful of financial costs attached.

You will initially begin a new 12 Year Cycle with Jupiter, your ruling planet moving into your sign until the 28th July. This will be stage one – stage two will occur late December to May 2022. New ideas can spring to mind that will give you a sense of optimism that may have been lacking of late. A new you can begin to emerge.

3 things to check before buying or selling a home (NC) Buying or selling a home is an exciting step in anyone’s life. But there’s no denying it’s a major undertaking. Here are three key things to rememberwhether you’rebuying or selling. 1. Consider your wants and needs Before you buy or sell, it’s important to think about what you value and what you want versus what you need. For example, is a big backyard a dealbreaker for you? Or, would you be okay with a tiny outdoor space if you found the right home? If you’re selling, is it the price that matters the most? Or is a short closing that puts money in your hand faster more important? 2. Interview your agent Everyone knows someone who knows a real estate agent. It can be tempting to make a quick choice and go with that friend of the family or in-law. While they could be the right person in the end, it’s important to interview at least a couple of different agents to find the

right fit. Real estate agents often have different specialties or mindsets and approaches that may or may not click with you. By having a chat with a few people, you’ll know you’re setting up a successful partnership. 3. Test for radon Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from uranium in the ground that can get into your home undetected. All homes have some level of radon. However, long-term exposure to elevated levels increases your risk of developing lung cancer – in fact, it’s the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. If you’re selling your home, reassure buyers about radon levels. And if you’re buying, it’s a good idea to do radon testing as well as your standard home inspection. You can purchase an easy do-it-yourself radon test kit or hire a certified professional. Costs to fix high radon levels are comparable to updating your furnace or air conditioner. 105 3080 TOWNLINE ROAD

You just want people to like watching you : Ileana D`Cruz

Life has come full circle dancing to the tunes of `Munni Badnaam` : Sandeepa Dhar Sandeepa Dhar, who plays a dancer in her upcoming show 'Chattis Aur Maina', opens about her long standing connection with Salman Khan as her show offers an interesting coincidence. For her upcoming show, Sandeepa recreates the iconic chartbuster 'Munni Badnaam' from Salman Khan's 'Dabangg'. Interestingly, Sandeepa Dhar was a part of Salman Khan's super-hit action film 'Dabangg 2' as she made a special appearance in the film. Shedding light on her equation with Salman Khan, Sandeepa Dhar said, "I am truly grateful for all the opportunities I have had through my career. One of my most memorable moments was working with Salman Khan, it was immensely surreal to share screen space with him in my very second film. Dabangg 2 holds a very special place in my heart as it was like a dream come true for me to work with such a thorough gentleman and everyone knows he such a really really nice person. Now as I gear up for the release of 'Chattis Aur Maina', life has come to a full circle dancing to the tunes of 'Munni Badnaam' from Salman Khan's Dabangg."

Actress Ileana D'Cruz has had a great run down South and has also been doing her share of Bollywood films. She says everything comes down to people and, as an artiste, one just wants the audience to like watching you. Popularity, she explains, is the one thing that balances the fact that the film industry can actually be a very cruel place to survive. "It (the film industry) is brutal, of course, but it comes down to people. If they (people) like you that is all you need. You just want people to like watching you," she said. Ileana feels the moment an actor is not appreciated they lose the mark. "It basically goes the same for me. I wouldn't want to watch a film with an actor I don't like watching. The minute

you are not liked anymore you sort of lose the mark. The industry is brutal in a sense, but it has got so many perks as well," she says. Acting is a profession that comes with its pros and cons, the actress notes, in this context. "You cannot have all the good things only, there is always a little bit of con. I think that makes it interesting. It makes you work harder. It makes you strive to keep doing better," she sums up. Ileana will next be seen in 'Unfair N Lovely', a comic take on India's obsession with fair skin. The film is set against the backdrop of Haryana and casts her opposite Randeep Hooda.

Stint as TV journo in real life helped live the role in 'Maharani' : Lopamudra Das

After Dostana 2, Kartik Aaryan out of another film? If the industry grapevine is to be believed, Kartik Aaryan has been shown the door once again. The actor is out of Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment production, 'Goodbye Freddy'. It is said that Aaryan wanted the film’s script tweaked to suit his requirement. 'Section 375' (2019) director Ajay Bahl is helming the film, co-starring Katrina Kaif. Last month, Aaryan was ousted from Karan Johar’s production 'Dostana 2'. Though KJo and Aaryan have preferred to keep mum about what went wrong, there has been ample speculation, including creative differences and his alleged fallout with 'Dostana 2' co-star Janhvi Kapoor. Collin D’Cunha’s directorial venture was in the news after Kartik Aaryan was dropped from the film, starring Janhvi Kapoor and television actor Lakshya. Earlier, without taking any names, Dharma Productions issued a statement about K a r t i k ' s replacement in the film. "Due to professional circumstances, on which we have decided to maintain a dignified silence - we will be recasting 'Dostana 2', directed by Collin D'Cunha. Please wait for

PAGE 30

the official announcement soon," the statement from Dharma read. Kartik is busy with his upcoming horror-comedy 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2' where he features alongside actors Tabu and Kiara Advani. The film is a follow-up to the 2007 film 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa' and is slated to hit the theatres in November this year. Kartik would also be seen in the film 'Dhamaka' which would be released on OTT. The Ram Madhvani's thriller 'Dhamaka' has Kartik slipping into the character of a news anchor reporting a hardhitting tragedy of a bomb blast. Kartik Aaryan portrays Arjun Pathak caught in the whirlwind of abidance to his career and awakening the humanist within. The film is scheduled for an OTT release soon.

Actress Lopamudra Das plays a journalist in the new web series "Maharani". She says her stint as a television journalist helped her create the role. "Since I was a TV journalist and used to cover every beat -- be it politics or entertainment -- I didn't have to prepare much for this role. I exactly knew the tone and throw. That's why when I auditioned for this character, I was quite confident and got selected immediately," Lopamudra said. The actress, who had earlier tried comedy on the tele-series "Yeh Teri Galiyan", considers herself lucky to have got this opportunity to work with National Award-winning filmmaker Subhash Kapoor, who has helmed films such

as "Phas Gaye Re Obama", "Jolly LLB" and "Jolly LLB 2". "I consider myself lucky to have got the opportunity to work with a director like him so early in my career," she said of Kapoor, creator of the series. The young actress says she also had a gala time shooting with Huma Qureshi, who stars as the protagonist of the series. Directed by Karan Sharma, "Maharani" is a 10-episode series set in Bihar of the nineties, and tries recreating the explosive political scene of the state in that era, through the story of an illiterate woman who is forced to become chief minister after her husband has to vacate the position after an attack on his life.

My biggest relief is my parents are vaccinated : Shweta Tripathi Actress Shweta Tripathi is relieved that her parents are vaccinated, as it gives her assurance to meet them after months of being away. Shweta, who recovered from Covid a couple of months back, was shooting in Benaras for "Escaype Live" and in Manali for "Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein". She lives in Mumbai now owing to her career but she originally hails from the Capital, and her

parents still live here. Shweta says she is looking forward to meeting them in the next few weeks. "My biggest relief at present lies in the fact that both my parents have been vaccinated. I truly appreciate the efforts made by Delhi and Mumbai authorities in ensuring a seamless vaccination experience for senior citizens residing there," said Shweta, who won accolades for her performances in films such as "Masaan", "Haramkhor" and "Gone Kesh", besides the web series "Mirzapur".
