Wildfire destruction in Lytton, BC and surrounding communities Brad Vis, Member of Parliament for Mission—Matsqui—Fraser Canyon, released the following statement on the ongoing wildfires devastating the town of Lytton and neighbouring communities: “I stand with the people of Lytton during this time of unimaginable grief. We are stunned by the widespread devastation to homes and businesses, and we mourn the loss of at least two community members. Thank you to the first responders who continue to work around the clock to save lives and homes during an already devastating wildfire season. We will rebuild

– that is not in question – but right now we need to focus on reunifying families and supporting those that have lost everything. “I have been seized with supporting the residents of Lytton, Lytton First Nation, and all those affected in the surrounding area. I am in regular contact with MLA Tegart, Mayor Polderman, Chief Webster, Chief Pasco, Acting Chief Haugen, ThompsonNicola Regional District officials, and many others. I have visited those directly affected by the fires at the Merritt Emergency Operations Centre, as well as other informale vacuee gathering points in Boston Bar and Sts’ailes First Nation. “Federally, I am in contact with Public Safety, Transport Canada, National Defence, and Indigenous Services Canada to press for every available support.

PAGE 6

“I sincerely appreciate the outpouring of messages of support and interest from media, constituents, and many others that my office has received. I encourage everyone to stay safe – please refer to EmergencyInfo BC for the latest updates, evacuation orders and alerts. I want to thank again, all of those who are stepping up to help and support the affected communities. From Balwant Sanghera’s Desk: In honour of Asa Singh Johal A prominent member of our community, a pioneer, a lumber baron, a philanthropist and a very proud Canadian has left us for his heavenly abode. Recipient of Order of British Columbia and Order of Canada, Asa Singh Johal, passed away on July 5, 2021. Our pioneers set foot on Canadian soil more than 130 years ago. Since then they have worked very hard in the growth and development of the South Asian community and their adopted country, Canada. As a result of their struggles and sacrifices, our community has achieved a prominent place in Canada. Due to their efforts, to-day, our community has become as one of the most visible, resilient, generous and powerful ones in this country. We owe all of this to those brave, hardworking, visionary trailblazers of our community. India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara Nanak Niwas’ Chairman Asa Singh Johal was one of those respected pioneers. Asa Singh Johal came to Canada with his parents at a very young age in 1926. He started working at age 14. Mr. Johal was keenly interested in the lumber business from an early age. This prompted him to start his own business. After years of hard work and perseverance he established himself as a major player in the lumber industry. Eventually, Asa Singh Johal became as one of the most prominent lumber barons in this province. His company Terminal Forest Products Ltd.and other companies have provided employment to thousands of workers over the years. Not only that, Mr. Johal and his family have donated millions of dollars to a lot of worthwhile causes. These include Children’s Hospital, Vancouver General Hospital, U.B.C., Richmond Hospital, BC Cancer Society and many others. The Johal family was kind enough to build an impressive auditorium at Government Girls Secondary School in his native village Jandiala in Jalandhar District. Asa Singh Johal and his family’s contribution to building and supporting India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara Nanak Niwas on # 5 Road in Richmond has just been amazing.

to take care of this huge project. The Gurdwara Management Committee is very thankful to Mr. Johal and his family for this. On April 11, 2021, the Committee honoured Mr. Johal and Mrs. Kashmir Kaur Johal with plaques for their on-going support and dedication in serving this place of worship and our community. Their generosity is very much appreciated. Asa Singh Johal was a very hard working, disciplined and punctual person. He treated everyone with great respect. This extra ordinary man was a great example of rags to riches story. Johal never forgot his culture, his heritage and this great country Canada that gave him an opportunity to reach these heights. Asa Johal loved Canada, a country that gave him a chance to be a very successful businessman and a proud citizen.

Asa Singh Johal leaves behind his loving wife Kashmir Kaur Johal, son Darshy, daughter-in-law Manjit, daughter Geven Oppal, son-in –law Avtar Oppal, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. We, at India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara Nanak Niwas, express our sincere condolences with the Johal family. We pray that the departed soul may rest in peace. An Akhand Paath Sahib will begin at the Gurdwara on Friday, July 9. The Bhog will take place on Sunday, July 11 at 5 PM. Health and safety around wildfire smoke During smoky times, you can keep your indoor air cleaner by closing your windows, recirculating air through a forced air system and using an air cleaner.

For those who require rescue medications, especially for respiratory conditions like asthma, ensure you have sufficient supplies on hand for when conditions are smoky.

You can also consider using a portable air cleaner that uses HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filtration to remove smoke from the indoor air. Province enables increased investments in renewable gas, hydrogen The Province has amended the Greenhouse Gas Reduction (Clean Energy) Regulation to increase the production and use of renewable gas as well as green and waste hydrogen in British Columbia, generating jobs and economic opportunities while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. “A key part of our CleanBC strategy is increasing the use of hydrogen and other renewable gases in place of fossil fuels in vehicles, buildings and industry,” said Bruce Ralston, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. “The changes we’ve made to the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Regulation will provide natural gas utilities with more flexibility, stimulate investments in renewable energy and accelerate growth of hydrogen and renewable gas supply in their systems, while keeping rates affordable for their customers.” B.C. is the first province in Canada to make these kinds of changes allowing for the increased production of renewable gas, including hydrogen. The amendments support the Province’s upcoming hydrogen strategy, which will include ambitious goals to increase the production and use of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen to help achieve climate targets under CleanBC and create jobs and opportunities in the clean energy and technology sectors. “This change is an important step to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our natural gas system by enabling the expansion of Renewable Natural Gas and clean hydrogen,” said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. “We’re committed to finding new solutions that significantly cut climateharming pollution in all sectors and power a clean economy for people and businesses.” The Greenhouse Gas Reduction Regulation (GGRR) allows utilities like FortisBC Energy Inc. (FortisBC) and Pacific Northern Gas Ltd. to make timelimited investments, within spending and volumetric caps, to stimulate the

Changes to the GGRR will enable natural gas utilities to increase the amount of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), green and waste hydrogen, and other renewable energy they can acquire and make available to their customers by:

3 food security myths – debunked

“Globally, there is a growing demand for biofuels as the world transitions away from fossil fuels, and today’s announcement is a critical step to decarbonizing B.C.’s economy. Investing in biofuel production in B.C. will create local jobs while reducing carbon emissions and waste,” said Karen Tam Wu, B.C. regional director of the Pembina Institute. “To kick start the hydrogen economy, B.C. needs a strategy that leverages our wealth of renewable electricity and advances the production and use of green hydrogen.”

Myth 2: More food is the answer. Though expanded food donations and availability may seem like the solution for those who are food insecure, there is a strong link between poverty and food insecurity. “Lack of money is the single greatest cause of food insecurity, not a lack of food,” explains Stern. “That’s why our team advocates for sustainable, structural solutions to food insecurity that pair poverty reduction with tangible support and resources for communities and individuals.”

Myth 1: Food insecurity is not a problem in Canada. Myth 3: People who are food insecure are unemployed. “Even though Canada is a country of considerable wealth and abundant “Sixty-five per cent of food insecure farmland, more than 4.4 million Ca- households rely on wages as their prinadians struggle to access the food mary source of income,” says Stern. they need.,” says Stern. What Does the Recent Constitutional Challenge to the CRT Mean for ICBC Claims? Troy McLelan Lawyer Simpson, Thomas & Associates Phone: 604 697 3967 Email: tmclelan@simpsonthomas.com On April 1, 2019, the Civil Resolution Tribunal (CRT) was given the responsibility of adjudicating important motor vehicle accident injury disputes. The power to decide significant issues such as your entitlement to no-fault accident benefits, whether your injury is a “minor injury” subject to the cap on non-pecuniary damages, determinations of fault, and damages for personal injury claims of $50,000 or less was given to the CRT.

Critical Problems with the CRT Scheme

CRT members who are appointed by the BC government.

Reliance on the mostly online CRT to resolve personal injury disputes was a very significant change in how personal injury claims should be decided. No other province in Canada uses such a scheme. ICBC claim lawyers immediately voiced concerns. A major problem is that the CRT was given a judicial function, a role that is constitutional preserved for BC’s superior courts. You should have access to an independent court and have your case decided by an independently appointed judge if ICBC wrongly puts you at fault for the car accident or incorrectly classifies your injuries as minor. Instead, the CRT scheme forces you to have your ICBC dispute adjudicated by

by the Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia. On March 2, 2021, the Chief Justice of the BC Supreme Court ruled that the law giving the CRT jurisdiction over certain motor vehicle injury claims were unconstitutional and no longer in effect. Chief Justice Hinkson ruled that the CRT is no longer allowed to decide if an injury is a “minor injury” and concluded that accident claims worth less than $50,000 should not be referred to the CRT rather than the courts. The BC Supreme Court’s decision did not affect the CRT’s ability to resolve

accident benefits claims or alter the ICBC Claim Lawyers’ Successful CRT’s jurisdiction over enhanced acConstitutional Challenge cident benefits claims, which started The constitutional validity of the CRT scheme was successfully challenged as of May 1, 2021. What Does the Constitutional Challenge Mean for Your ICBC Claim? After the BC Supreme Court released its decision in March 2021, the CRT “paused” existing, unresolved claims for a minor injury determination and claims for fault and damages up to $50,000. However, the BC Attorney General then launched an appeal of the BC Supreme Court decision. On April 8, 2021 the BC Court of Appeal granted a temporary stay of the BC Supreme Court decision. The temporary stay means that the C RT c a n once again

decide if an injury is a “minor injury” and decide claims for fault and damages of up to $50,000 for motor vehicle accidents that happened on or after April 1, 2019. The stay is effective until the Court of Appeal releases its final decision on the constitutional challenge. In the meantime, accident victims are left in limbo. The CRT is no longer “paused” and claimants must choose whether to file or continue their claim at the CRT or file their claim in court instead. If you have been injured in a motor vehicle accident and are not sure whether to file at the CRT or in court, it is highly recommended that you get legal advice from an experienced ICBC claim lawyer as soon as possible after the accident. My idea is to not let image take over work I want to do : Tamannaah Bhatia Actress Tamannaah Bhatia has been acting for 16 years now. She has won a large fan base as one of the top glam queens of the South, and has also impressed as an actress of substance with select roles. She feels her idea is to not let any particular image dictate the kind of work she wants to do. Tamannah made her acting debut in 2005 at the age of 15 with the Hindi film "Chand Sa Roshan Chehra". The same year, she made her Telugu debut with "Sri" and the following year she made her Tamil debut with "Kedi". "I have evolved as a person and at every different point of time. I have continuously worked, so for me, most of my life is divided

into the films I have worked on. I enjoy it. For me, it is as new as it was on the first day," Tamannaah said. She feels the process of breaking an image has become challenging now. "In fact, it is a lot more challenging now because I feel like there is a constant need of unlearning and you are making something that has already been created in terms of an image, and moving forward my idea is to not let an image take over the kind of work I want to do. I want the work to kind of precede that," she said. Tamannah, who was recently seen in the web-series "November Story" on Disney+ Hotstar VIP, is now gearing up for the Telugu remake of the Hindi thriller "Andhadhun". The Telugu version is directed by Merlapaka Gandhi.

I don't work for stardom : Badshah

He is among the top rappers in the country but Badshah insists he doesn't work for the stardom. It's also the reason, he adds, why the fear of losing stardom never bothers him. "I don't work for the stardom. I work for the music that belongs in my veins and I know I will never lose that. It's God's gift to me," claims Badshah said . Life a cruise right now, of course. His run of chartbusters over the years has included 'Mercy', 'Paagal', 'DJ waley babu', 'Abhi toh party shuru hui hai', 'Kar gayi chull','She move it like', 'Wakhra swag', 'Garmi' and 'Genda phool',

and continues. He has appeared in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 in 2017, 2018 and 2019 as one of the highest-paid celebrities in India. Controversies around plagiarism charges and purchase of fake views, which hounded him last year, have also been forgotten. At 36, the musician who started out in 2006 with the group Mafia Mundeer, only sees his fan base burgeoning. Talking about the number he thinks has been a gamechanger, Badshah, whose real name is Aditya Prateek Singh Sisodia, diplomatically tags all of them as 'tide-turners'.

Yami Gautam to play journalist in her next film Understanding skin and honesty of a character is important : Shanaya Kapoor

Actor Sanjay Kapoor's daughter Shanaya Kapoor is ready to enter Bollywood soon. The 21-year-old is naturally excited."I'm extremely excited and looking forward to shooting the film. I have been doing several readings with my director, and been having lots of discussions on my character brief and breakdown of the scenes," says the new kid on the B-Town block, in an interview. Shanaya's first film is directed by Shashank Khaitan and, like the debut projects of many industry kids lately, will be produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. She is cast opposite actors Gurfateh Pirzada and Laksh Lalwani in the film, a rom-com love triangle. The debutant actress has been preparing for the film before it goes on the floor after lockdown gets over. "I think understanding the skin and honesty of a character is important," she says. Before her debut film, Shanaya worked as an assistant director on the Jhanvi Kapoor-starrer "Gunjan Saxena" to understand filmmaking and how film sets function. Her father Sanjay Kapoor has lately been a regular on the digital space, he was seen in "Lust Stories", "The Gone Game" and "The Last Hour", and has "Finding Anamika" coming up. Shanaya picks her favourite from her father's recent works. "In my opinion, one of my favourites of my father is Lust Stories. The character my father played had layers, and I think it was cracked extremely well!" she says. Sanjay featured in Dibakar Banerjee's segment of the anthology film alongside Manisha Koirala and Jaideep Ahlawat.

Yami Gautam, who tied the knot with director Aditya Dhar last month, is revelling in the joys of matrimony. But soon, it will be work calling the actor. Gautam is expected to begin shooting for Pink (2016) director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s yet-untitled next in August. A source reveals, “The film was supposed to be shot in Kolkata and Purulia in May, but the plans went awry due to the second wave of the pandemic. Now that the situation is improving, Aniruddha wants to kick off the shoot in Kolkata in

August. A major portion of the story is set in the city.” True to Chowdhury’s hard-hitting style of cinema, the movie will examine the crimes in journalism that sometimes go unnoticed. “Yami had loved the script right at the narration. She will play a journalist who propels the narrative forward. She is deeply invested in the project, and has had several Zoom calls with the director over the past few months to understand the finer details of the story,” adds the source.

If each one does his bit, won’t have suffering : Tisca Chopra With theatres having downed their shutters for the better part of 2020 as well as this year, those employed at cinemas have faced acute financial strain. Tisca Chopra is lending a helping hand to the community by hosting a ration donation drive — which will cater to 1,000 workers who have been rendered jobless amid the pandemic — at PVR Citi Mall in Andheri today. “I always think of Cinema Paradiso [1988] when I think of theatre workers. In small towns, cinemas are perhaps the only source of entertainment, and the workers are a part of the lives of the locals. They have been out of work all this while. So, I felt we must reach out in whatever way we can,” says Chopra, adding that the basmati rice brand, India Gate, has collaborated with her to distribute essentials among those in

need. Over the next few weeks, the drive will be conducted in different parts of Maharashtra, thus reaching out to a wider section of people. While she had initially started Tisca’s Table with chef Vikas Khanna to facilitate conversations between bright minds, Chopra has of late used the platform to extend support to the marginalised communities. “If each one of us does our bit, we may not have too much suffering in terms of food and essentials. [Media entrepreneur] Gautam Thakker has helped us set up this initiative with the theatre workers’ association, and exhibitor Akshaye Rathi has ensured that food reaches all over Maharashtra, including the Vidarbha region. We want to expand Tisca’s Table to welcome international funding, thus enabling relief work.”

So before you start shopping for real estate, it’s a good idea to take a step back and carefully plan your purchase. The first step when saving for a down payment is to get your finances in order and seriously think about what you can afford. Government takes next steps to improve fairness for off-dock drayage sector

ndustry stakeholders are invited to provide feedback on the implementation of the off-dock drayage recommendations recently released by the independent B.C. container trucking commissioner. “Our government is committed to supporting and accelerating sustainable growth for the drayage industry in a way that is fair for everyone in the industry,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “I encourage stakeholders to engage in open communication with the B.C. container trucking commissioner, so we can move forward and help us all

reach our shared goals.” The Off-Dock Drayage Recommendation Report was published on May 12, 2021, in response to a request from the minister to examine opportunities to make targeted adjustments to the rates and policies related to offdock drayage activity in the Lower Mainland. “BCTA welcomes the opportunity to continue to work with container trucking stakeholders and provide feedback in this process,” said Dave Earle, president and CEO, BC Trucking Association (BCTA). “Consultation is a cornerstone of effective public policy, and we are encouraged that the provincial government and the B.C. container trucking commissioner are continuing to engage B.C.’s drayage sector in conversations that will inform evidence-based decisions.”

PAGE 27



Last year, the Province and the commissioner commissioned a study to better understand off-dock truck trips that support containerized shipping throughout the Lower Mainland. The study was published in September. The commissioner has since conducted ongoing consultation to find industry solutions that support a stable, efficient and competitive container-trucking sector. “Our concerns have been heard by Minister Fleming. We now look forward to discussing how we can best implement the recommendations,” said Gavin McGarrigle, western regional director, Unifor. “We will continue to insist on more effective enforcement to stamp out undercutting and will be working to help ensure no trucker is worse off under the transition to any new system.” Since 2017, the Province has made several improvements to wages and working conditions for drivers, including: increasing hourly wages; increasing wages for independent operators; and increasing the minimum daily callout rate. The consultation being undertaken by the commissioner will inform the next round of improvements for those working in the container trucking sector. The commissioner is calling for written submissions from all interested parties, including drivers, until the end of day, Aug. 31, 2021.

Avoid any impulsive decisions, especially if they are connected to freeing yourself up in some way. There can be difficulty in getting the facts straight, caused by a lack of information. This may be not so much about what you want to do but what you are allowed to do, based on a situation you find yourself having to deal with.

You can be quite inventive when it comes to dealing with certain obligations. This could also relate to any person in an authoritative position that you might need to deal with. Don’t be too bold on the money side of things though. This is no time to take any risks, as there are too many facets that are not clear. Just have patience.

You will be rather edgy and this could encourage you to say things that are not wise, which you might regret. You could also discover that something hasn’t been dealt with, as it should have been in the past. It is more about correcting it than anything else. It could eventually produce greater long-term stability in a surprising way.

Suspecting that information is being held back from you could be quite correct but you should not focus too much on it. It is far better to concentrate on what you have control of, mainly because you can keep this well balanced, which will produce a sense of harmony. Someone, who is reliable, will emerge at the right time.

There can be difficulty in getting things to go your way, which could be linked to a lack of proper information. You could be attempting to push matters too quickly. Other people are in a strong and stable position as well as quite prepared to use any authority they might have. Those who think they have authority could be a problem.

You have the opportunity to deal with something in a more confident manner than would normally be the case. If there are certain obligations you don’t want to take on, don’t be afraid to refuse. There will eventually be a favourable outcome with anything that you have put work and effort into. You don’t have to meet demands.

You may either need to change plans with a There could be difficulty with a person not

rather be determined to take that direction. You on stable foundations you intend to put in could be surprised to find a particular person place. Don’t allow their behaviour to encourage has similar values and this will be refreshing. you to take risks. Plod along in your own way.

Someone else could be all over the place, making it difficult for you to know where things will head in the future. You need to make up your own mind, especially with any situations you have put time into getting the details right. Be careful that you don’t get left with more work than is fair. They might want you to feel sorry for them.

Don’t waste time in attempting to work out the true intentions of somebody else or what they are expecting from you. You could be quite right when it comes to what you think is the truth but attempting to get an open response is probably impossible. You will enjoy coping with what is necessary, even streamlining things.

Taking risks can cause you more trouble than what it is worth. The slow and steady approach will allow you to put alternative things into place or alter the manner in which matters have been structured for a long period of time. Avoid being stirred up by other people who may do their best to generate tension or aggravation.

There could be little choice but to get on with something that you have left floating for too long. There is a lot you can accomplish but it will be made more difficult if you focus more on what you would rather not do as opposed to what you actually need to do. You will gain a great sense of pleasure once the job has been done.

Backyard living: Mosquito free (NC) Thanks to ever-changing lockdown restrictions preventing us from enjoying time indoors with friends and family, many of us have moved activities to our backyards, transforming them into kitchens, classrooms and living areas. Post-secondary return to in-person learning follows BC’s Restart plan Students, faculty and staff at B.C.’s colleges and universities are being supported to come back together for in-person learning this fall, informed by the release of new Return-toCampus Guidelines. This follows the announcement that B.C. has transitioned to Step 3 of the Province’s restart plan. “The pandemic has made the past year and a half difficult for postsecondary students and institutions, but now, thanks to vaccines, brighter days are right around the corner,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Training. “I am so thankful to students, faculty and staff for showcasing their professionalism, flexibility and compassion throughout the pandemic, and I am excited for students to return to inperson learning this fall.” The Return-to-Campus Guidelines are designed to parallel B.C.’s fourstep restart plan. The transition period between Step 3, which took effect

July 1, and the beginning of September is a crucial time, as post-secondary institutions ramp up operations and welcome back faculty, staff and students. The guidelines highlight the importance of public health measures, such as daily health checks and hand hygiene, as well as classroom logistics and on-campus student housing and dining services. For example, on-campus student housing providers can plan for close-to-full occupancy for the fall. Access to mental health supports for students, faculty and staff, Indigenous gathering places and accommodations for on campusservices are also outlined to support the transition. “We have made excellent progress with our provincial immunization program in B.C. That, along with declining case counts and low hospitalization rates, means we can gradually and safely move ahead with our restart plan – including in-person learning at our colleges and universities,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, pro-

vincial health officer. “We will continue to carefully monitor any transmission episodes on campuses, just as we do with influenza or other respiratory illnesses this fall, to keep students, faculty and staff safe. Supporting a safe 2021 fruit harvest in B.C.

resh fruit from the Okanagan and Creston Valley will continue to be on the tables of British Columbians this year, as support for work camp accommodations for seasonal fruit pickers has been extended through the 2021 harvest season. The B.C. government is investing $652,000 so work camps meet COVID-19 health and safety requirements in Loose Bay (Oliver) and Summerland. These work camps have modified their operations, infrastructure and layout to protect worker, employer and public health, and hired an on-site co-ordinator to conduct and implement COVID-19 safety training and protocols, as well as supporting daily health checks. “The flavours of B.C. fruit are an enjoyable part of our summers, and we want to make sure the growers and workers harvesting the crops are staying safe,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “We need to continue to look after each other as we restart our province, and extending a program that was very effective in preventing COVID-19 outbreaks on our farms and in our communities last year is part of that care.”

Funding is also being provided to support COVID-19 health and safety measures for farms and orchards that offer on-site camping for workers. A dedicated, seasonal position will be introduced in Creston to act as a COVID-19 co-ordinator and to liaise with employers and employees with on-site camping to provide support for safety, health and well-being.

workers that come to B.C. from other Canadian provinces to work during the summer months. “This funding will help provide a safe, secure workforce for the harvest of Okanagan cherries and apples,” said Pinder Dhaliwal, president, BC Fruit Growers’ Association. “The youth workers who come from Quebec and other provinces, including B.C., will be able to camp in a COVID-19 safe environment, and the industry appreciates the provincial contribution to help keep the farm-

worker campsites open at the Oliver, Summerland and Creston locations during these times of COVID-19, helping us to ensure the harvest of our amazing B.C. cherries and apples.” Similar to last year, fruit pickers will need to complete an online COVID-19 awareness course delivered by AgSafe to stay in a designated work camp. The course, available in English and French, includes information on physical distancing, hygiene and cleaning, work pods, transportation, tools and equipment, safe self-isolation and vaccinations. The course also outlines the rights and responsibilities of employers and workers.

Last year, there were no COVID-19 cases at any organized work camps. The ongoing efforts are a partnership between the B.C. and local governments, Interior Health and the B.C. Fruit Growers Association, to support the safe harvest of B.C. crops, as well as the province’s agriculture sector, economy and food security.
