Public Health officials provide guidance ahead of high temperatures this weekend With a Heat Warning issued yesterday by Environment Canada, advising of increasing temperatures this week, medical health officers for Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) remind residents to take precautions to protect themselves and each other from the heat.

There are a variety of mild to severe symptoms linked with heat-related illness, including thirst, dizziness, confusion, weakness and fainting or collapsing. Medical Health Officers remind Lower Mainland residents to take precautions to protect themselves and others from the heat, including:

“We are not expecting this week’s temperatures to reach the levels we experienced during the extreme heat event at the end of last month, but consecutive days and nights of high temperatures do pose a risk of heat-related illness,” said Dr. Michael Schwandt, Medical Health Officer for VCH. The Heat Warning has been issued for the Fraser Valley, Howe Sound, Metro Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast. It advises that a building ridge of high pressure will lead to rising temperatures for Thursday and into the weekend. Daytime highs near 30 degrees Celsius are forecast Thursday through Sunday morning with slightly cooler daytime temperatures expected near the water.

Check in on others · People living alone are at high risk of severe heat related illness. Check regularly on older people, and those who are unable to leave their homes, for signs of heat-related illness. · If others are unwell, help move them to a cool indoor or shady space, help them get hydrated and call for medical assistance if appropriate. Stay hydrated · Drink cool non-alcoholic beverages (preferably water) irrespective of your activity intake. Don’t wait until you are thirsty.

Vax for BC launches to get more people vaccinated, recognize pandemic heroes

orking with health authorities throughout British Columbia, the Province is making it easier than ever for people to get vaccinated with the launch of Vax for BC, the next step in the Province’s campaign to help as many eligible people as possible get vaccinated. “With more than 80% of eligible people in B.C. vaccinated with their first dose and more than 60% fully vaccinated, we have made tremendous progress in our vaccine rollout,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “The next few weeks is a great opportunity for everyone not yet fully vaccinated to take advantage of the number of Vax for BC opportunities throughout B.C.” Beginning on Tuesday, July 27, 2021, and lasting throughout the month of August, community events, vax vans and mobile clinics will be up and running in dozens of communities in B.C. to get more people vaccinated with their first and second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. While registration and booking using the provincial Get Vaccinated system is still encouraged, these events will allow eligible people to walk-in and receive a vaccine without a scheduled appointment.

people in our province who have taken this step, not just for themselves, but for their larger community.” Along with regional events held by health authorities, Vax for BC will also include the first provincewide Walk-in Wednesday. On Aug. 4, 2021, clinics throughout the province will reserve approximately 20,000 doses for walk-in vaccinations for anyone 12 years and older still needing their first dose or people eligible to receive their second dose. As more British Columbians step up and get vaccinated through Vax for BC, the Province will gradually refocus its vaccine efforts from mass clinics onto programs targeting the hardest to reach people. In the weeks ahead, B.C.’s vaccine strategy will shift toward more local public health clinics, community outreach efforts, mobile programs and pop-up clinics. These will take place within specific communities and populations throughout the province, where the need is greatest. “I want to express my gratitude to the health authority teams and community partners for their exceptional efforts in delivering our vaccination program throughout the province,” said Dr. Penny Ballem, B.C.’s immunization lead. “And during the next push, there will be even more convenient opportunities for people to get a life-saving vaccine to protect yourself and those around you.”

In addition to drop-in events, Vax for BC will kick off an opportunity to recognize how far British Columbia has come together, providing a chance for people to share messages and notes of gratitude to pandemic heroes over the last 18 months. Since last year, more than 127 tonnes of plastic have been removed from B.C.’s coastline under the Clean Coast, Clean Waters initiative. It is estimated that in 2019, more than 340,000 tonnes of plastic items and packaging were disposed of in British Columbia. What Are the Main Causes of Pedestrian Accidents in BC?

Adam Ueland Lawyer Email address: aueland@simpsonthomas.com Phone: 604 697 3987 Simpson, Thomas & Associates Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable to serious injury — a major accident could leave a pedestrian with bone fractures, a spinal cord injury, or a brain injury. Other contributing factors to pedestrian vehicle accidents include poor weather such as fog and rain; slippery roads caused by rain, ice, or snow; and lighting conditions (for example, a pedestrian is typically less visible at night or when crossing at a poorly lit intersection).

If you have been seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident, it is highly recommended that you consult with a personal injury lawyer. Keeping kids safe and active this summer (NC) Canadian summers can get extremely hot. Unusually high temperatures are especially dangerous for infants and young children. In fact, a young child has more skin relative to body mass than an adult, so sunburns can be very serious. Here are some tips and tricks to help you keep your child cool and healthy in the heat: Prepare Follow the weather forecast and UV index readings when planning outdoor activities with your little one. Because the sun’s rays are strongest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. keep children out of the sun during those hours. Schedule outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day. Protect In strong sunlight, have children wear a wide-brimmed, breathable sun hat and sunglasses, and cover their skin with breathable clothes or sunscreen. Get your children used to wearing sunscreen early on. Don’t forget areas,

British Columbians help reduce COVID-19 impacts on Province’s finances

T

he strength of B.C.’s economy and the resilience of British Columbians has helped to keep provincial finances on more stable ground during one of the most challenging times in the province’s history. As the provincial government responded to people’s need for income support, business grants, tax breaks and crucial services during the pandemic, British Columbia ended the 2020-21 fiscal year with continued

worst-case scenarios, which resulted in lower-than-expected spending and higher-than-expected revenues. Spending on COVID-19 support and recovery programs reached $10.1 billion by the end of March 2021. Overall, the Province’s expenses increased by $8.6 billion over fiscal 2019-20, with increased investments in health, community supports, K12 education and social services. Revenue increased by $3.5 billion over revenues in 2019-20. Much of the higher revenues can be attributed to some sectors proving resilient during the pandemic, federal contributions for COVID-19 support and more savings and higher earnings at ICBC.

3 tips for your backyard renovation (NC) As the summer winds down, warmer fall weather is the perfect time to give your backyard a facelift to prepare it for the upcoming seasons. But while backyard renovations can be exciting, there may be potential hazards, so you need to be prepared. Here are three tips to help keep you safe and ensure that everything goes smoothly when you get to work. 1. Locate all powerlines

Some people believe that ladders made from materials such as wood are safe because they assume that they do not conduct electricity. But always proceed cautiously. Before you set up your ladder, check for overhead powerlines and place it at least three metres away. 3. Practise safe use of power tools When using extension cords, only use the ones rated for outdoor use. Never take a chance by using something intended for indoor use, even if it’s for a short duration. The power capacity of your cord should be the same or greater than the tool you want to use.

Before you begin, locate powerlines and make sure to stay at least three metres away from them at all times. There are chances of getting a shock by getting too close as electricity can jump or arc. This also includes the use You should only plug your cord into of high-reach tools. an outlet with a ground fault circuit If your construction requires digging, interrupter. Redesigning your home office for permanent WFH (NC) A return to office, once permitted by pubic health, means different things. Some of us may find ourselves embracing an entirely remote future, while others are eagerly looking forward to a hybrid model. But one thing is for sure — the home office is here to stay. So how do you create a space that ensures a productive atmosphere as you navigate the realities of the new world of work? These key tips will help redesign and elevate your remote workspace to create a comfortable environment, setting you up for success in the permanent home office era. Pay attention to comfort Spending a major chunk of your day working means comfort is a priority. Ensure that your office has good natural lighting and a room temperature you are comfortable with. Natural light and green scenery have been proven to boost both your mood and productivity. If you’ve ever needed an excuse to get more plants, this is it.

Ergonomics matter If you’ve been using the kitchen barstool as your chair, now is the time to reconsider. Making sure that you have an ergonomic workspace is key to reducing stress, increasing productivity and avoiding body aches from prolonged periods at your desk. Look for an ergonomic chair that is adjustable to ensure you are sitting properly. Now may also be a great time to upgrade your desk. Consider an adjustable one that can be raised to create a standing desk to avoid being sedentary for prolonged periods.

Plans you had put in place could be disrupted by unforseen circumstances. This may force you to consider other ways or opportunities that will allow you to cut back on some of the expense. Someone else could decide it is time to move on from any situation that has been primarily social because it is time to become more serious.

You can come up with some inventive ideas or solutions to any problems you may have been trying to sort out. This could involve analysing your level of responsibility and whether you think this is what you really want. Any risks you feel you want to take from now to mid August need to have a practical undertone.

Taking it easy will be difficult as frustrations can arise when it comes to obligations. This can involve finances – it is no time to take any risks and hope for the better. You may not like to look of the level of responsibility that could be attached to situations you want to develop in the future. It might be time to trim down plans.

You could begin to see your future from a different perspective and this could be because you can see how something you have always wanted but perhaps thought impossible, could be accomplished. It can be a matter of altering your priorities and not attempting to get too much done at once. Take one step at a time in your mind.

It is better to handle things for yourself – greater clarity can begin to emerge. You need to work out where you have support and where you don’t. This will require you to pay close attention in relation to any discussions and then go away and think about it. That way you will become aware of those that won’t fit in with your wishes

Venus, the planet of peace, balance and harmony moves into your sign where it will remain until 16th August. This can immediately make you aware of any areas where too much is expected of you, or what may become too much to handle in the future. It will be up to you to lower the level. You may not be listened to, so persist.

effort to mid August to alter any routines that seem to have established themselves that have become too much. You need to be authoritative.

to obligations that could be tied into something that seems more free and easy or pleasure based. It is better to narrow down what needs to take priority.

Don’t be tempted to increase your commitments – you need to go the other way to mid August. Someone else can be full of ideas that will put more pressure on you rather than on them. They certainly have faith in your ability to create the structure and to put the details in place but this is no reason to wear yourself out.

You are in a good position, from now to mid August, to make future plans with a sense of peace about what is realistic and manageable. This may encourage you to immediately drop some ideas you have been considering. Your ability to tune into what someone else is really looking for puts you in a good position to ask the right questions.

Someone else may begin to become mysterious, which could ongoing until mid August. You could feel they are acting out one thing but feeling something else. This is not a time to spend without thinking. You need to analyse the need to do this and how this might affect regular commitments you already have in place.

You could feel luckier than you have in while because of things going your way without difficulty. You can expect greater response from others from now to mid August, though there could be a level of caution attached. You could feel you have seen another side of a person this week. Take your time in processing this.
