Which Generations of Drivers Are More Likely to be Involved in a Car Accident?

Simpson, Thomas & Associates Personal Injury Lawyers Phone: (604) 591-8885 Certain generations of drivers are at an increased risk of being in a major car accident. Surrey lawyers at Simpson, Thomas & Associates prepared this article to examine the issue of age as a risk factor for motor vehicle accidents. Younger and Older Drivers Are the Most Dangerous on the Roads Teens tend to get a bad rap and are thought of as the most dangerous drivers. While it is true that young drivers (those under the age of 25) have the highest crash rates, Canadian and US statistics indicate that crash rates for people age 70 and older are similar. Overall, young drivers and older drivers are involved in more car accidents than any other age group, and seniors and younger drivers (especially young male drivers) tend to pay the highest car accident insurance premiums. Why Are Younger and Older Drivers More Prone to Car Accidents? Driving is a highly complex task that requires the integration of visual information with cognitive and motor skills. There are several reasons why younger and older drivers are more prone to major accidents. For example, younger drivers are inexperienced behind the wheel and their brains are still developing; both of those factors can make teens in particular less able to assess danger and more likely to engage in risky driving behaviour such as speeding or reckless driving. Older drivers are more likely to experience agerelated impairments that impede their driving ability, such as slowed reflexes or response time, or medical conditions that compromise vision, hearing, mobility (e.g. muscle or joint stiffness that make it difficult to shoulder check) or cognition (e.g., Alzheimer’s or dementia). Who is Most at Risk for Serious Injuries or Fatal Car Accidents?

The City of Mission is currently preparing the 2022 Budget and 20222026 Financial Plan and is requesting that residents take a few minutes to provide their input on where spending priorities lie. Starting in August 2021 and throughout the fall, deliberations began and a draft 2022 Budget and 2022-2026 Financial Plan was drafted. These discussions were guided in part by the input gathered during the annual Citizen Satisfaction Survey where residents provided feedback on the services they receive from the City and what they would like to see in the future. This feedback helped develop insight into the public’s preferences for where the City should focus its investments and resources. This survey now explains how the City is currently planning to allocate operating expenditure and asks for public guidance on where tax dollars are to be spent, where priorities lie

Educators said they often received contradictory public health information from health authorities and various levels of government, and hardly any advice on what to do if children and staff became ill. “There wasn’t a lot of directives,” according to one educator. “It was just very vague and you were sort of left hanging.” This, and other factors cited in the study, led to childcare educators – many who hold diplomas in Early Childhood Education – feeling un-

In a Policy Options piece published Oct. 27, Smith and co-author Alice Mũrage write that policy measures taken during the pandemic have led to sustained and gendered long-term consequences for millions of Canadians, including loss of employment, increased unpaid care work, deteriorated mental health, and increased cases of gender-based violence.

NDP supports call to decriminalize drug use and remove harmful stigma NDP MPs applaud the actions of the crime. It’s time to treat substance use BC government and call for decrimi- and addiction as the health issues they truly are.” nalization country-wide NDP MPs are praising the BC government’s move to decriminalize personal possession of drugs in the province and saying similar measures are needed nationally to help the thousands of Canadians struggling with addiction. In the last Parliament, NDP Health Critic Don Davies introduced groundbreaking legislation to decriminalize drug use in Canada so addiction can finally be treated as a public health concern instead of a criminal justice issue. “Decriminalizing personal possession of drugs in the province and across Canada is an essential first step to removing the shame that often prevents people from reaching out for life-saving help,” said NDP Critic for Mental Health and Addictions Gord Johns. “Addiction is an illness, not a

The proposal states that people with small amounts of drugs would not be fined or arrested but instead they would be given information on how to access health and social services. Decriminalization is supported by health experts and the Canadian Association of Police Chiefs. “The suffering that addiction causes people in my province, and across Canada, is unfathomable,” Davies stated. “It’s clear our current approach isn’t working; families and communities are being destroyed. This is an epidemic that impacts Canadians of all backgrounds, and while decriminalization in BC is a good step, we need to decriminalize drug possession across the country.”

Students created personalized backpacks with supplies to navigate the inequities found in the world and developed ways to make the world an even better place that builds bridges between cultures and people. Archway Community Services Knitting Community Connections Archway Community Services provides several components to support newcomers to Canada as they progress along their settlement processes within their new community via its Community Connections program. A few of the components include conversation circles, citizenship preparation, social activities, book club, educational sessions, and friendship-based matching programs. We at The Patrika had a chance to sit

down with the Knitting Group, one of the social activities offered by Community Connections. The knitting group gives those who attend a great chance to meet with each other, chat about life, practice a new skill, and connect with other newcomers to Canada. This

program runs weekly on Monday afternoons at the Summit Centre. The program is coordinated by Lata Aggarwal and Rupinder Padam from Archway Community Services with the support of Community Connections Supervisor Elise Marier. The Knitting Group is unique as it is offered only to women. The women in the group did not know each other prior to joining the group, have developed friendships. The

PAGE 28

group was started in 2009 with the goal of connecting non-English speaking newcomers to Canada to get together with English speaking Knitting Volunteers to learn knitting and to learn some English as well. All materials used in by the group have been donated. In addition, all items knitted by the group are then donated to the less fortunate or sold and the proceeds donated to local charities.

The women in the group feel the group provides them with social meeting time, interactions with friends, and a sense of giving back to the community. Some of the women have been coming to the group for more than 10 years. The present volunteer knitting instructor has been volunteering for the past 7 years. The women in the group were all praise for the instructor and said that she is patient, good at teaching and has excellent knitting skills. The Knitting Group brings together women of all cultures and backgrounds. The group has had attendees from Vietnam, Sudan, Haiti, China, Syria, Cambodia and India. The group is inclusive, very diverse and brings women together to learn and enjoy a common hobby of knitting. Finalise any matter with somebody else that does not fall in line with priorities that are important to you. If they are not willing to accept certain obligations, you need to take that seriously. It will be difficult for you to know exactly where you stand up to mid December. Your independence being challenged could be highly frustrating.

Creative ideas you have for the future will very likely need modification due to the determined desires of somebody else. Part of it might be that your thoughts are not detailed enough or that you do not realise the amount of work involved. You could come up with new ways of doing things and fine-tune them up to mid December.

New directions either associated with somebody else or that they want to take could be a surprise to you and perhaps disappointing. You will certainly be up against a strong level of determination that will be more than equal to your tendency to lean more on the inflexible side. Communication is the key up to the 25th November.

Anything you have been planning and detailing since September can now start to open up quite easily. This can take your creativity to a new level and you can look forward to gaining much pleasure from all this effort up to mid December. Pressure that may have been applied by somebody else could come to an end right now.

Interaction with others either on a work or personal level can increase but you need to be mindful of jobs that need to be finished up. The need to structure things quite differently can arise unexpectedly. This could include home or family matters. None of this will happen instantly but needs to be focussed on until mid December.

You can finally turn away from the focus on finances that has been necessary since September. You can feel much freer on a daily basis. You can turn your mind to more interesting subjects to 25th November. With this can come an altered view of what is important in the long term as well as investigating the options available.

Many changes involving your finances can take place to mid December. This could also include job opportunities or changes of direction within a job. The decisions you make need to be your own. Anything very out of the ordinary suggested by somebody else might have suited them, but not necessarily you. Investigate.

Life is taking off in new directions in a big way for you with the New Moon occurring in your sign this week and Mars stimulating a new 2 year cycle from now to 13th December. You will be in a better position to be able to make decisions on personal matters as well, after having been held back one way or another since September.

You will need a lot of patience from now to mid December. New directions can be establishing themselves but exactly what it is all about will not come to the first stage of some enlightenment or you being in a position to make some decisions until 25th November. Until then it will be best that you sit back and observe.

Letting go of something that you have been committed to, perhaps for a long time, could benefit you financially. Social interaction could suddenly pick up in unexpected ways. You could also become involved with a new group of people either with work or socially and from this could develop some new friendships.

You could finally see some freedom looming in the long term or gain mental clarity on what it is you should be aiming towards. New commitments can arise that were not planned. This does not necessarily mean you have to accept all responsibilities attached. It is important you think about yourself and what you want to manage.

You could finally realise how to move forward after many challenges of processes with somebody else since September. It could generate a very positive attitude in moving forward this week. This can result an optimistic view of what is possible in the long term from now to mid December. It will prepare for new beginnings next year.

Important start to equalise playing field : Ranveer

For a better world Known to be a socially conscious citizen, Bhumi Pednekar has started a muchlauded pan India advocacy campaign — Climate Warrior — to raise awareness about environmental conservation and climate change. The concerted social media initiative highlights the incredible work done by tireless environmental activists and citizen groups across India. “We are running out of time and cannot make our next generations vulnerable,” reminds Pednekar, who will spearhead this initiative. Using her social media numbers, the actor will voice concerns about the rapidly changing climatic conditions in the nation. Pednekar

is starting a series of chats on national radio to reach out to a wider set of people. She says, “It is important to have this conversation about climate change out in the open. We have to do whatever it takes to educate people about the need to protect the environment.” Hoping to find like-minded partners to save the planet, she adds, “ I’m hoping to sensitise people about the problem through my shows on radio and engage with fellow climate warriors.”

Could relate to the film as I was in long-distance realationship : Sanya After the charming Pagglait earlier this year, Netflix’s Meenakshi Sundareshwar seems right up Sanya Malhotra’s alley. The slice-of-life offering, through its leads Malhotra and Abhimanyu Dassani, tells the story of a young couple who find themselves in a long-distance marriage. While the vivacious character of Meenakshi was a big draw, Malhotra says the film’s central theme resonated with her due to her personal experiences. “I believe people will connect to the aspect of a longdistance [marriage]. Since I was in a long-distance relationship, I could relate to the film,” she states. Vivek Soni’s directorial venture is

a classic case of opposites attract as the spirited Meenakshi falls in love with the shy Sundareshwar. “There’s an interesting juxtaposition between Sundar and Meenakshi — he is shy and calm whereas she is confident and outgoing,” says the actor, adding that it was fascinating to play a role that is in stark contrast to her off-screen personality. “I am an introvert, and take my own sweet time to open up to people. Meenakshi didn’t need time to warm up to Sundar; in their first meeting itself, she was sure that she would marry him. I fell in love with my character from the very beginning.”

Often, it t a k e s small but sustained measures to effect change. Ranveer Singh, over the past two years, h a s b e e n highlighting the issues faced by the D e a f community. In May 2020, the actor petitioned the government to recognise Indian Sign Language (ISL) as the country’s 23rd o f f i c i a l language. His efforts seem to be bringing about a significant shift — the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) signed an MoU with the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC) last year, to aid deaf children with educational material in sign language. Taking the plan forward, the texts — spread over 490 modules and designed for

students from first to fifth standard — were uploaded on Diksha Portal of NCERT earlier this month. Lauding the step, Singh says, “The news of NCERT textbooks being made available digitally in ISL is a huge step forward in [creating] an inclusive society. [The fact that] our leaders have identified this movement makes me proud and hopeful for what is to come in 2022.” Textbooks for standards six to eight are expected to be converted to ISL over the next year. Studies show that one’s cognitive skills are developed in childhood, and it is necessary to provide children with educational material in accordance with their learning needs. Digital textbooks in ISL will enable deaf children to access educational resources, thus empowering them. The actor commends the National Education Policy 2020, which brought much-needed reforms for the community, among other changes. “It is a progressive move. This is an important start to equalise the playing field for the 70 lakh-plus citizens of the Deaf community.” In September, Singh’s independent record label IncInk released multiple signlanguage music videos for the community. Promising to champion their cause, he adds, “I will continue to be the loudspeaker for the community till their basic rights are granted.”

Now, the film will reach new audiences : Farhan Akhtar

Diana Penty and a 'Adbhut' sneak peek from her shoot

Toofaan was among the many Hindi films that pursued digital premieres during the second round of theatre shutdown earlier this year. While Farhan Akhtar was praised for his performance of a goon-turned-boxer, the sports drama received mixed response from critics as well as the audience when it dropped on Amazon Prime Video. Now, as the film is gearing up for a television premiere on Zee Cinema over the weekend, the actor is glad that Toofaan will reach even those who don’t have access to streaming platforms. “There are people who have still not watched the film. While streaming platforms are popular in the country, there is a section

Diana Penty’s performances have a certain charm. On camera, the actress appears a natural and her presence lights up the screen. The actress impressed with her work in ‘Shiddat’ and she is now set for ‘Adbhut’. Nonetheless, Her followers were intrigued to know about her next project. Diana recently broke the news about working on an intriguing project titled ‘Adbhut’. And now she is providing them with a sneak peek from her shoot diaries. Also, Diana Penty took to her Instagram and shared a reel set against the

of the population [that has not been introduced to OTT platforms yet]. Now, this film will reach a new audience [through television].” Akhtar’s second collaboration with director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra after Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013) told the story of a national-level boxer, Aziz Ali. Through the romantic track of its leads, the movie also tackled religious divide head-on. The leading man is proud that the story struck a c h o r d across generations. “Many of my father’s colleagues rarely take the time to message me [about my performance]. But this time, they did that. So, the film spoke to people across generations.”

backdrop of snow-clad mountains. She did an interesting wordplay with her caption as she wrote, “Love at frost sight! ????” Altogether, dressed in a stylish sweatshirt, a pair of denims and trendy sneakers, she gave a glimpse of the magical world to her followers as she topped her reel with the track, ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan’. Talking about ‘Adbhut’, this time, Diana Penty will take the route of a spooky thriller for her part. The film’s shoot has already begun in Shimla and will also star Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Shreya Dhanwanthary. The film is being produced by Sony Pictures Films India in association with Sabbir Khan Films and will be distributed by Sony Pictures Films India in 2022.
