HOW COUNTRIES HANDLED THE PANDEMIC & IMPACTS ON MENTAL HEALTH: STUDY A global study on countries’ responses to the pandemic finds there have been worse mental health trajectories in countries that attempted to control COVID-19 transmission with stricter public health restrictions, such as Canada, than those which tried to suppress or eliminate COVID-19 transmission. Findings of the international research team, led by Simon Fraser University psychology associate professor Lara Aknin, have been published in The Lancet Public Health. Researchers combined daily policy stringency data from the Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker with psychological distress scores and life evaluations captured in the Imperial College London-YouGov COVID-19 Behaviour Tracker Global Survey. The survey data was collected from 15 countries between April 2020 and June 2021. Countries were grouped into two categories: those that sought to eliminate COVID-19 transmission and those that aimed to mitigate or reduce the spread of the virus within the country.

measures restricted social connections and were associated with greater psychological distress, lower life evaluations and a lower opinion of the government compared to people living in eliminator countries. “Governmental responses to the COVID-19 pandemic have been widely debated,” says Aknin. “At first sight, it may seem that eliminator countries implemented much harsher strategies than other countries because of their widely reported international travel bans. But, in reality, people within these borders enjoyed more freedom and less restrictive domestic containment measures overall than citizens in mitigator countries.”

Aknin is also an editor of the annual World Happiness Report, which ranked Canada as 15th in the world for life satisfaction, falling gradually in the Eliminator countries include Australia, rankings from 5th place in 2010. Lessons for the future Mitigator countries include Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, The authors note that effective policies Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, to contain the pandemic must be accompanied by strategies and resources Sweden, and the U.K. to address the adverse impacts on Eliminator countries such as South Ko- mental health. rea and Japan implemented early and targeted actions, such as international For future pandemics, the researchers travel restrictions, which resulted in suggest governments could prioritize lower levels of COVID-19 infections, policies that reduce virus transmission fewer deaths and less negative mental but impose fewer restrictions on daily health impacts compared to mitigator life, such as restricting domestic travel instead of restricting gatherings. countries. Surrey School District has sent notes to parents of six elementary and four High Schools asking

MT. LEHMAN

Well Pump Installation and Service

Friday, April 29th, 2022

September 2022. Here are the schools in question: Beaver Creek Elementary, Chimney Hill Elementary, Green Timbers Elementary, Newton Elementary, Strawberry Hill Elementary and T.E. Scott Elementary. The four high schools are: Enver Creek Secondary, Frank Hurt Secondary, Princess Margaret Secondary and Tamanwis Secondary.

Workers Wanted: Welder & General helper good wages, must speak English, knowledge of Punjabi will be an asset

According to the BC education policy students from grades 5 to 8 are expected to take one second language after English. In BC high schools the language requirement is optional from grades 9 to 12. Punjabi Language Education Association (PLEA) has been promoting Punjabi language instruction in BC’s public schools, colleges, universities, and community. PLEA strongly believes that getting our children interested in their mother tongue Punjabi at an early age is extremely beneficial to them. Not only in their communication skills but also in staying connected with their heritage. As such, PLEA would like to urge parents of grade four students of these six elementary schools to choose Punjabi for their child and return the forms to their child’s school as soon as possible. For the four high school students too, PLEA urges them to sign up for the Punjabi classes as soon as possible. For further information they can contact the district office (Balwant Sanghera) at 604-836-8976 or Sadhu Binning at 778-773-1886.

Province seeks public input on supports for children, youth

A survey about B.C’s new service approach for children and youth with support needs is now open to the public. The children and youth with support needs service framework – which describes a vision for a new provincial service-delivery model – and the survey are now available online. In October 2021, the Province committed to improve access to services

for children and youth with support needs in a trauma-informed and culturally safe way. To support improved access, government is establishing new family connections centres. These centres will provide children, youth and their families information, expert intervention and therapies, with services provided in the home, in the community, virtually and at the centres.

The first four centres will open in 2023 in Central Okanagan/Kelowna, Terrace, Smithers and Prince Rupert. Information gathered through these centres, from families, services providers, Indigenous Peoples and others, as well as feedback from the survey, will help inform the rollout of approximately 40 additional family connections centres throughout the province, beginning in 2024.

This new model is one way the Province is responding to the recommendations from B.C.’s Representative for Children and Youth and the all-party select standing committee on children and youth, as well as feedback received from families, advocates and service providers. The public survey and a summary of the service framework are available online in several languages. The survey is open until September 2022.

In Loving Memory of Professor Piara Singh Bhullar It is with heavy hearts that the Patrika Media announces the passing of one of our pioneer team members, Professor Piara Singh Bhullar. Professor Bhullar joined the Patrika 25 years ago in 1997, shortly after immigrating from India in 1993. He was a pillar of the Patrika team and a key member contributing to the newspaper’s success. He took responsibility for several duties at the paper including providing translations, reporting local news, and writing stories and poems. Prior to immigrating to Canada, Professor Bhullar was a professor in Punjab, India, a tenure that took him to teach at universities and colleges all over the state. Professor Bhullar was the kind of person that lit up a room when he walked in. He was a patient, kind, and a very knowledgeable gentleman.

5 ways to get involved in your neighbourhood

(NC) The last few years have taught us the importance of community care and staying local. We’ve also spent more time in our neighbourhoods than ever before. So, why not devote some of that time to getting involved in ways that can have a positive impact? Here are some ideas to get started.

information on demographics, housing and more for every place in Canada. Use this information to advocate for improvements that would benefit your community, like a new bus route, elementary school or local park.

1. Help maintain a local park rink.

Most of us are familiar with the concept of NIMBY, or “not in my backyard.” People thinking this way can accept social programs and improvements as long as they themselves are not impacted. A YIMBY (i.e. yes in my back yard) club is the opposite, turning “not” to “yes,” giving you and your neighbours the chance to be leaders for positive social change.

4. Start a positive “YIMBY” club.

Parks have become a haven for many of us during the pandemic. From a place to get some fresh air, to a playground for our kids, a dog park for our pups and an outdoor sports hub, parks are essential for healthy active living. Give back to yours by helping maintain your local park and outdoor skating rink with your neighbours. 5. Map out community artwork. 2. Start a little free library book exchange. A mapping project is a fun way to connect with your Little free libraries are popping up everywhere be- neighbours and discover exciting new things in your cause they’re a great way to pass along books you’ve area. One idea is to map art in your community and read and discover something new, all while taking share this info on social media or through your local a stroll through your neighbourhood. You can DIY library, so others can engage with it too. You can your own if you’re handy, or visit your local library even chat with the local artists behind the pieces to add colour and background to your mapping project. to see what book donations they have available. You can also leverage census data to gather inter3. Learn about what’s needed. esting facts about your neighbourhood, such as top It’s hard to get involved when you don’t know a languages spoken, population count, most common lot about your city or town. To get informed, start fields of study, commuting habits, average family by checking out the latest census data, which have size and more.
