A new study finds that having a portable air cleaner in the home can reduce the negative impacts of air pollution on brain development in children. Simon Fraser University researchers collaborated with U.S. and Mongolian scientists to study the benefits of using air filters to reduce exposure to air pollution during pregnancy, and assessed the impact on children’s intelligence.

was 2.8-points higher than the group that did not use an air cleaner during pregnancy. “These results, combined with evidence from previous studies, strongly implicate air pollution as a threat to brain development,” says Ryan Allen, professor of environmental health in SFU’s Faculty of Health Sciences. “But the good news is that reducing exposure had clear benefits.”

Children in the intervention group The researchers note that their ran- also had significantly greater average domized controlled trial is the first study of its kind to document the impacts of air pollution reduction on cognition in children.

verbal comprehension index scores, which is consistent with results from previous observational studies. The research suggests that a child’s verbal skills may be particularly sensitive to air pollution exposure. More than 90 per cent of the world’s population breathes air with particulate matter concentrations above the WHO guidelines. The researchers suggest the population-level impact of air pollution on brain development could be substantive even if the individual-level effects are modest. Their study results indicate that reducing exposure to air pollution during pregnancy could improve children’s cognitive development around the world. “Air pollution is everywhere, and it is preventing children from reaching their full potential,” adds Allen. “Air cleaners may provide some protection, but ultimately the only way to protect all children is to reduce emissions.”

UBC Grad Students to Study Climate Change in Mission Municipal Forest Graduate students from the Faculty of Forestry at UBC will soon study climate change and sustainability in the Mission Municipal Forest as part of a new partnership agreement between the City of Mission and the university. “By promoting learning in our local forest, Mission gains valuable knowledge while doing our part to help ensure sustainable forestry practices everywhere,” said Mayor Paul Horn. Under the terms of the agreement, Mission’s Forestry Department will provide project opportunities for Masters of Sustainable Forest Management students and field trip opportunities for the Faculty. “We value our relationship with UBC’s Forestry Faculty, and look forward to taking the next steps to formalize this relationship,” said Chris Gruenwald, Director of Forestry. “Research has been a big part of the history of the Municipal Forest, and we look forward

to working with faculty to provide cutting-edge research that looks at climate change mitigation and adaptation. This will have tremendous benefits for our community.” Research projects will focus on climate change and will be open to both masters and doctorate students. “UBC Faculty of Forestry is pleased of the many research and educational opportunities that this new partnership with Mission Municipal Forest will give our faculty, staff and students,” said Dr. Robert Kozak, Dean of UBC Forestry. “It aligns well with our collaborative approach to addressing some of the planet’s most pressing issues, such as climate change adaptation and mitigation, and will complement our current activities throughout British Columbia and around the globe, including with our two current research forests, Malcolm Knapp and Alex Fraser.”

“The City is very pleased to welcome Mr. Dauphin to Mission as our new Director,” said Mike Younie, Mission’s Chief Administrative Officer. “Mr. Dauphin brings a wealth of experience from his previous experience and is well prepared to lead the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department going forward. As a critical member of the City’s senior management team, Mr. Dauphin will be responsible for continuing Council’s commitment to investing in parks, recreational programming, and culture in Mission.” Dauphin comes to Mission with over ten years of experience in recreation leadership, most recently as Director of Athletics at York UniversityGlendon Campus. Prior to that, he was the Director of Parks, Recreation & Tourism for the City of Bathurst in New Brunswick.

He earned a Master of Science degree in Education from D’Youville College in New York and a Bachelor of Arts in English and Physical Education from Redeemer University College. He studied economics and political science at McMaster University, and is also fluent in French. As a volunteer, Dauphin is currently on the Board of Directors for Cycling Canada and previously served as Vice President of Administration for the Ontario Weightlifting Association, where he helped create such events as the Nepisiguit Challenge in Bathurst. “It is a blessing and honour to join this amazing team and I am excited to serve this fast-growing city in one of Canada’s most beautiful locations,” said Dauphin. Dauphin joined the City at the end of May and takes over the role from Maureen Sinclair who retired earlier this spring after serving in the position for ten years.

Investing in biomedical engineering will bolster British Columbians’ health Students studying at the forefront of biomedical engineering will soon have a new learning environment for the school of biomedical engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC). “These bright students are shaping the future of health care, here in B.C. and around the world,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Training. “These are the future professionals who will push the boundary of medical innovation and ensure that we have access to life-changing medical advancements. Our government’s investment in this building is an investment in health care for all British Columbians.” The project cost is $139.4 million, with $25 million from the Province and $114.4 million from UBC. Construction is expected to start in summer 2022 with the building opening for students in early 2025.

Biomedical engineering combines engineering principles with medical sciences to design, create and evaluate equipment, computer systems, and software used in health care. The work includes designing and building artificial internal organs and body parts such as hip joints; designing computer software to operate complex medical equipment such as 3-D X-ray machines; and developing new drug therapies to solve human sickness and diseases. “This project is a major step forward for solidifying UBC and British Columbia’s position as a world-leading biomedical research and innovation hub. The new building will enable scientific discovery, the development of new technologies and will support the education of the next generation of talented scientists, innovators and entrepreneurs,” said Santa Ono, UBC president. “Bringing together researchers, students and staff from

UBC’s faculties of medicine and applied science, this nexus of research, entrepreneurship and talent development will enable therapies that improve human health and innovation that help drive economic growth.”

This project is part of the long-term StrongerBC Economic Plan that builds on B.C.’s strong economic recovery and works to address two long-standing challenges – inequality and climate change – by closing the skills gap, building resilient communities and helping businesses and people transition to clean-energy solutions.

The five-storey building will feature classrooms and learning spaces on the lower floors, with research labs and spaces on the upper floors. The building will consolidate classroom and lab spaces currently hosted in 24 “Developing, attracting and retainbuildings on the Vancouver campus. ing the talent B.C. needs to grow and innovate across our economy is “The ability to think boldly and an important part of our StrongerBC unconventionally is at the heart of Economic Plan,” said Ravi Kahlon, biomedical engineering,” said Bianca Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery Kirsh, UBC biomedical engineering student. “With the new school of and Innovation. “The new school of biomedical engineering building, stu- biomedical engineering facility is a dents will have access to cutting-edge key step in our generational commitspaces that will support cross-sectoral ment to close the skills and talent gap, collaboration, hands-on experimenta- and make sure British Columbians tion and the translation of our creative can gain the skills they need to fill ideas into disruptive technologies.” the jobs of tomorrow.” PAGE 15

Positive Changes coming for International Graduates in Canada

As Canada continues to recover from the COVID-19 Pandemic, employers are actively looking to fill hundreds of thousands of vacant positions in all sectors across the country. This provides potential applicants wanting to immigrate to Canada a window of opportunity to work in Canada. To help Canada emerge successfully from the negative impacts of the pandemic, the government is focusing on immigration as the key to fuel Canada’s economy. Not only does the government want to encourage immigrant workers, the country’s economic growth depends on it. Regardless of the issues that Canada currently faces, the country remains a top destination for global talent. To help maintain Canada’s economic growth, the government wants to ensure that businesses and employers have access to the correct skilled workers they require. Therefore, the correct worker for a proposed job will have a seamless transition to working in Canada. On April 22, 2022, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced that Express Entry draws will soon resume and that invitations for candidates to apply for permanent residence will begin in early July. This will allow for a new wave of immigrants who have been waiting to apply to have another avenue to immigrate to Canada. Minister Fraser has also announced a new temporary policy regarding post-graduate work permit extensions. This temporary policy will give recent international graduates with expiring temporary status an opportunity to stay in Canada longer. This will allow the applicants to continue to gain work experience to have a better chance of qualifying for permanent residency. Starting in summer 2022, former international students who are in Canada and have a post-graduate work permit expiring between January and December 2022 will qualify for an additional work permit of up to 18 months. Talented and skilled international graduates play a vital role in addressing the Canadian labour shortage. Tens of thousands are able to successfully transition to permanent residence each year, including more than 157,000 former students who became permanent residents in 2021, with more than 88,000 of them transitioning directly

from a post-graduation work permit to permanent status. The Minister also announced new measures for those who applied for permanent residence through the temporary resident to permanent residency pathway (TR to PR Pathway) last year. The TR to PR Pathway is a limitedtime pathway to permanent residence for qualifying temporary residents and their families. The purpose of the limited-time pathway is to invite a broad range of individuals already working in Canada to apply to stay permanently. While closed to new applications since November 2021, the process of applications will continue. Taking effect this summer, the policy changes announced include: (1) applicants will no longer be required to remain in Canada while their application is being processed; (2) applicants who apply for an open work permit while waiting for their permanent residence application to be finalized will be able to get work permits valid until the end of 2024. This will ensure that all permanent residence applications will be finalized before applicants will need to apply to extend their temporary status again; and (3) to support family reunification, immediate family members who are outside Canada and who were included in a principal applicant’s permanent residence application will be eligible for their own open work permit. As Canada strives to bounce back from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to get your foot in the door to start the process of immigrating to Canada and to take advantage of these new immigration opportunities. S. Sonia Sidhu- Sonia is an immigration lawyer at Green and Spiegel LLP. From Balwant Sanghera's Desk The COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic has severely affected our lives. Most of the activities were either curtailed or put on hold for almost two years. This included visits by students and other groups to our world famous Highway to Heaven in Richmond. Finally, things are getting back to normal. So are the activities that were taking place before the Pandemic hit us like a ton of bricks. Similarly, students and other visitors are coming back to visit this small stretch of Number Five Road in Richmond that has close to 25 places of worship of different denominations. This famous road is home to India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara Nanak Niwas and twenty plus other places of worship. In addition to the Gurdwara, it has a mosque, two Hindu Temples, Lingyen Mountain Temple, Tibetan Monastery and a number of Christian churches and religious schools. The Highway to Heaven has received wide coverage in the media. This has made it as a favourite place for visitors. This is more so in case of students who come here to learn about different religions and the intercultural

T

he Government of Canada recognizes the immense challenges faced by those fleeing conflict and is committed to improving access to vital mental health services for vulnerable newcomers. Since 1989, Kids Help Phone has provided free, 24/7, confidential mental health resources to young people across Canada. On World Refugee Day, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced a contribution agreement with Kids Help Phone to provide counselling services for Afghan and Ukrainian youth in Dari, Pashto, Ukrainian and Russian. These new services respond to the urgent need faced by youth fleeing conflicts in Afghanistan and Ukraine. The Minister visited the Kids Help Phone office in Toronto where he saw firsthand how funding provided by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is being used to expand phone counselling services to Afghan and Ukrainian youth.

This funding is part of a larger $2 million agreement that will allow Kids Help Phone to gradually expand its professional phone counselling service via interpreters to 100 languages by 2025 and builds on the previous introduction of Arabic and Mandarin interpretation in 2019. Culturally sensitive, youth-oriented mental health phone counselling is just one of the supports in place for Afghan and Ukrainian families arriving in Canada. There are more than 500 service provider organizations across Canada that are funded by IRCC to deliver settlement services to permanent residents, including resettled refugees, and to Ukrainians arriving in Canada under the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel. IRCC continues to work closely with provinces, territories and service provider organizations across the country to welcome vulnerable newcomers and help them adjust to life in Canada.

UFV grants honorary degrees to Jo-ann Archibald, Diane Delves, Peter Dhillon, and Shirley Turcotte A leader in Indigenous education, an Abbotsford-based developer, an agribusiness magnate, and an innovator in Indigenous-focused counselling will receive honorary doctorates from the University of the Fraser Valley at its Convocation ceremonies on June 14 and 15.

As she grew older, she shifted that entrepreneurial spirit from produce to real estate. Delves spent the first half of her career as a real estate appraiser, even starting her own appraising business.

Appointed to the Bank of Canada’s board of directors, he’s held the governorship of such leading public entities as the BC Agricultural Land Reserve, Atomic Energy Canada, the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games, and the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency, and served on boards for the Vancouver Airport Authority, BC Ferries, Greater Vancouver Advisory Authority, and many more.

“The work that I do is so collective, and it involves so many people across the Nations, that it would be really an insult not to accept it,” says Turcotte, a resident of Vancouver. “I can appreciate that this award is honouring the work that we’ve done in Indigenous psychotherapy and in attempting to change child welfare and to reshape things in Canada.” Turcotte was born in Winnipeg to a Métis father and a mother who was raised Russian Mennonite. Her father was physically violent with her family and routinely sexually abused Turcotte and her older sister. Confronting and surviving the abuse, incest, and trauma Turcotte experienced as a child was the topic of To a Safer Place, a critically acclaimed and controversial documentary released in 1987.

Born in Burnaby, Dhillon holds a BA in History from UBC, a law degree from the University of Leeds, and was honoured with the Order of British Columbia in 2009, and the Queen’s In her career as a Métis knowledge carDiamond Jubilee medal in 2012. rier and registered clinical counsellor, As a business leader and CEO of the Turcotte created new tools and forms of Richberry Group of Companies, Dhil- therapy to help survivors of childhood lon’s strong sense of ethics and duty abuse and complex trauma. led him to donate millions to causes throughout British Columbia and She created a health program called across the country in the last decade Indigenous Focusing-Oriented Therapy (IFOT), which blends Indigenous tradialone. tions of healing with current needs of Shirley Turcotte Indigenous individuals and communities. (NC) Inflation is quickly raising prices of goods and services, and significantly impacting monthly budgets. But there are ways to help lessen the effects. The first thing to do is figure out where inflation is hurting your household budget the most, likely with gas and groceries. To help offset high gas prices, plan your errands and routes to cut down on travel time. Set up a carpool for your daily commute or the kids’ activities, and take public transit, bike or walk when the distance and weather permits. For groceries, try to find in-season local produce, check weekly flyers for sales and plan your meals to avoid unnecessary waste. Further stretch your savings by growing your own greens, fruits and vegetables in a garden at home. When substitutes aren’t available, find ways to mitigate costs. Rewards

programs can help you save on future purchases and adventures. If you’re not part of a rewards program, look for one that maximizes the money you spend, such as the BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard. Travel, entertainment and dining don’t need to be put on the backburner due to inflation. It’s been a long two years and many of us are eager to get back to the activities we’ve missed out on. Use your earned rewards points towards hotel rooms, flights and tourist attractions. With a plan in place and early preparation, you’ll be able to enjoy your summer holidays within budget. PAGE 31

Mars, your ruling planet will join beneficial Jupiter in your sign this week where it will remain until 5th July. This marks the beginning of a new 2 year personal cycle and this combination could certainly provide very beneficial opportunities, though you might have to watch being overly optimistic and taking on too much at once.

You have got the opportunity to rethink personal matters that may have first required your attention mid to late April. What needs to be let go could become very obvious now, so go that way. This won’t necessarily completely establish new directions you can follow – that will begin to take shape in early July, so prepare.

Greater clarity about what is important personally can emerge but you should be cautious of acting too quickly. There are things you need to carefully consider to mid June. Right now you have the chance to bring an end obligations expected that you feel do not suit your purposes. Handled slowly will result in success for you.

A lot more can be expected of you up to early July, particularly from any person who has authority. This does not mean you should not question this. What you have to guard against in the next couple of weeks is being too generous in regard to what you take on. Watch out for someone wanting to make things easier for themself.

You can become more fired up from now to early July about any long-term goals you have recently considered. This could involve letting go of obligations that somebody else has expected. Streamlining what you need to manage on a daily basis could be necessary as well as a big help in enabling you to reach your goals.

Commitments you had to deal with so far in May can now make you aware of how somebody else will put themself first. There may not be a lot you can do about this up to early July but you should certainly not allow it to increase and work on ways to eliminate it altogether. Stay focussed on your own future directions to mid June.

Things will get very active and busy when it comes to other people, particularly up to early July. It might be wise to consider bringing an end to any situation that puts too many demands on you for the benefit of others. You may have considered this from mid to late April but now the time has come to do something. Free yourself up.

You can find yourself with a lot more work to handle one way or another. The need to get better organised is now here. A good routine needs to be put into place from now to early July. If you have overindulged of late, paying better attention to your health and perhaps getting some exercise can pay off as well. Not a time to be lazy.

The more effort you have put into getting a good foundation in place since mid April, the greater will be your opportunity to enjoy yourself up to early July. This would be an excellent period to have a break. If you have been spending too much, now is the time to put better routines in place to get it under control. Be persistent.

Matters connected to home and family may require greater attention to early July. You might need to get a better routine in place. You will more than likely enjoy it and not find it difficult at all. That might be a different matter for family that don’t want to change or take on any new routines you see as necessary. Don’t be put off.

be the case, even if more money happens to come your way. You could begin to see your priorities from a different perspective. This could be associated with more practical information coming your way now.
