Province launching new centre for agritech innovation A new B.C. Centre for Agritech Innovation will further position the province as a world leader in agricultural technology, helping to improve food security in B.C. and around the world, while creating hundreds of goodpaying jobs.

“PacifiCan is committed to supporting innovative partnerships that help B.C. agritech companies commercialize their technologies and create cleaner, more productive agriculture, food and seafood industries,” said Harjit S. Sajjan, federal Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada. “Investments in high-growth industries, such as the agritech sector, help develop skills and local talent, positioning British Columbia as a world-leader in innovation.”

A key commitment of the StrongerBC Economic Plan, the new centre will be located at Simon Fraser University’s (SFU) Surrey campus. The centre will bring together academia, government and industry partners (known as the triple-helix model) to create more productive, diverse and resilient food- This investment is expected to create nearly 200 jobs and help train more supply chains. than 700 workers, while adding 30 The Province is investing as much as new agritech projects throughout the $6.5 million over three years for the province by 2025, using the skill sets centre, while the federal government is of B.C.’s world-class post-secondary providing as much as $10 million over institutions, including SFU, the Unifive years through Pacific Economic versity of the Fraser Valley, Thompson Development Canada (PacifiCan). technology to improve productivity and food security. This year, Kahlon and Popham signed an agreement between the Province of B.C. and the Netherlands to help further secure British Columbia’s food supply by developing agritech opportunities in both jurisdictions. This action plan focuses on specific strategies to further collaboration between the government, science, academia and companies in B.C. and the Netherlands. The StrongerBC Economic Plan moves British Columbia forward by tackling the challenges of today while growing an economy that works for everyone.

The long-term plan builds on B.C.’s strong economic recovery and works to address two long-standing challenges – inequality and climate change – by closing the skills gap, building resilient communities and helping businesses and people transition to clean-energy solutions. The plan sets two main goals for the province: inclusive growth and clean growth, and puts forward six missions to keep B.C. on track.

BC Fairs launches Buy BC agriculture trivia contest BC Fairs are taking British Columbians on a journey this summer with an online Buy BC-themed trivia challenge that explores local products made in the province.

“For over a century, B.C.’s agricultural fairs have been promoting the farmers and producers in their communities,” said Karen Streeter, president, BC Association of Agricultural Fairs and Exhibitions. British Columbians can take part in the contest by visiting participating fairs’ websites and social media pages to find digital scavenger items, which are agricultural facts related to a fair’s region. To enter the contest, individuals must answer at least five trivia questions and submit the answers through the BC Fairs mobile app or by completing an entry form on the BC Fairs’ website.

“The B.C. fairs and exhibitions season is a perfect opportunity to support local farms and the food they produce,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “The Buy BC Trivia Contest will help share fun facts about the amazing local products that are grown, raised and produced in B.C., and celebrate our farmers, producers and processors, while highlighting the many Buy BC products consumers can enjoy that are from their own Participants are also encouraged to take a photo of themselves in front of an backyards.” agricultural exhibit at any one of B.C.’s The Ministry of Agriculture and Food agricultural fairs or submit a photo of is partnering with the BC Association themselves at a B.C. farmers’ market of Agricultural Fairs and Exhibitions to for a bonus entry to the contest. launch a Buy BC Trivia Contest during the 2022 B.C. fair season to help in- The Buy BC Trivia Contest runs from crease awareness of the Buy BC brand Aug. 1 to Sept. 5, 2022. The Council of the Federation meeting is an opportunity to bring down the cost of doing business Transportation and fuel costs have driven 92% of small businesses to increase their prices in the past 12 months, according to recent data from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB). Record-high prices at the pump, coupled with ongoing supply chain challenges and labour shortages, have pushed the cost of doing business through the roof, adding immense pressure on small business owners and consumers across the country. As Canada’s premiers are gathering at the 2022 Council of Federation meeting in Victoria, B.C. today and tomorrow, CFIB is calling on premiers and the federal government to make doing business in Canada more affordable by: Temporarily eliminating or lowering federal and provincial fuel excise taxes Pausing planned hikes to carbon taxes Raising the federal and provincial small business deduction threshold to $600,000 (currently $500,000) to match Saskatchewan, and indexing the threshold to inflation annually “Every cent counts for small businesses, especially as they navigate skyrocketing input costs and labour and product shortages. Three provinces - Ontario, Alberta, and Newfoundland and Labrador - have provided temporary relief at the pumps—now the federal and other provincial governments need to follow their lead,” said Corinne Pohlmann, Senior Vice-President of National Affairs at CFIB. “More than half of small businesses nationwide have yet to return to normal revenue levels. As the premiers come together today and tomorrow, they need to make small business recovery a top priority.”

PAGE 15



79% of business owners have increased their prices in the past 12 months by a lot more or a bit more than in a usual, pre-pandemic year. In BC, 94% of small business owners indicated that increases in transportation and fuel costs drove their decision to raise prices in the past 12 months. While most of the price of gas is set globally, fuel taxes in the province are the highest in Canada. Overall, provincial taxes (carbon and fuel) make up around 20% of the cost of fuel in BC.

Internal trade barriers are costly to Canadian economy Five years into the Canadian Free Trade Agreement, the progress on reducing unnecessary barriers to the movement of goods, services, labour, and investment has been slow. Reducing red tape and trade barriers is one of the most cost-effective, meaningful ways to help small businesses grow and expand. Canadian governments must increase trade opportunities and eliminate internal trade barriers to working and trading across Canada. CFIB recommends governments: Adopt a policy of “mutual recognition” to internal trade, which means any regulatory standard in one jurisdiction is recognized in all other jurisdictions without meeting further requirements Provide better and more transparent data on progress, particularly on implementation of reconciliation agreements

Mike Rauch announces bid for Abbotsford School Trustee Mike Rauch, a candidate for Abbotsford’s Board of Education hopes to use his decades of engineering and business leadership to serve the good of public education. Rauch, 50, is running for school trustee in the October 15, 2022, Abbotsford Board of Education municipal election. Rauch was the CEO of FlexiForce North America, a multimillion-dollar manufacturing firm with 300 employees in 14 locations worldwide, before moving into industrial land development and lease management 7 years ago as President of Cahilty Capital. He has dedicated his volunteer time to building community, especially to support the health and well-being of youth and families. He cites his years of service as a grass-roots community event organizer, coach, and member of an educational committee among his qualifications for the board position.

Rauch also shared responsibility for the early development and launch of the Terry Fox Ride of Hope, a 360 km cycling fundraiser for cancer research inspired by Rauch’s friend and Terry Fox’s brother Darrell Fox of Chilliwack. The Terry Fox Ride of Hope has evolved into the largest third-party fundraising event for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Rauch also states, “I’m excited about contributing to our youth to build a stronger community. I have children at the primary, middle, and secondary levels, and one starting university. I have many years of experience with strategic planning in large organizations, managing large budgets, and making difficult decisions.” Over the years Rauch has felt increasingly moved to contribute his skills and experience to help the district pursue As the Board of Education sets the what is best for Abbotsford students. direction for Abbotsford schools, “I am a community-minded leader “I have been closely following school Rauch views the trustee role as one who advocates for educational op- district decisions for the last three
