From Balwant Sanghera’s Desk: Recognition of Punjabi as a Canadian Language

unjabi Language Education Association (PLEA) has been promoting Punjabi in Canada in general and BC in particular for more than 30 years. In this regard it has received considerable support from the

for revival and recognition of their languages. Furthermore, during the past 50 or so years Canada has become a totally multicultural country. As is well known, no culture can survive without its language. We believe that it is time

Thousands of people are now engaged in this process. In addition to Punjabi being a good source of employment, it is also being taught in a number of schools, colleges and universities in BC and many other places in Canada. Here in BC, a number of hospitals, city halls, banks, credit unions and businesses display signs like: “We speak Punjabi.” Vancouver International Airport displays welcoming signs in Punjabi. In addition to that various government and non-government agencies provide their services in Punjabi as well. There is no doubt that by working togather we have accomplished a lot. However, still a lot more needs to be done in this regard.

With this in mind a number of PLEA’s Board of Directors (Sadhu Binning, Rajinder Pandher, Kamaljit Kambo, Paul Binning, Ranbir Johal, Harman Pandher and Balwant Sanghera) met with National Leader of the NDP Mr. Jagmeet Singh in his Burnaby office on July 22. The main purpose of our meeting was to share with Mr. Singh one of the long-term goals of PLEA that Punjabi and other major Indigenous and other languages spoken by millions of Canadians across Canada no longer be viewed as ‘foreign’ languages. They should be given their long overdue recognition. Mr. Singh was very receptive to our request to follow up and suggested several strategies to follow this up. He emphasized that the foremost of these was the importance of lobbying our elected officials via petitions, letter writings and phone calls etc. Mr. Singh stressed that the politicians and governments respond well to public pressure. As such, we should try to get other interested communities on board and undertake such measures in order to convince the decision makers in Ottawa to make appropriate changes to our language laws. We are very thankful to him for this and hope to follow this up at a later meeting.

The Punjabi community has been in Canada for almost 130 years now. Though our culture, customs and other things are considered as Canadian, yet our mother tongue Punjabi is still considered as a foreign language. We recognize that the British and the French as two founding nations have been able to make their languages –English and French – as the two official languages of Canada. Unfortunately, in this process the original and early settlers of Canada, the Indigenous communities were bypassed till now. Canada of 2022 is very different from the one that came into existence in 1867. The Indigenous community has been Balwant Sanghera asserting itself for quite some time now. In order to continue his legacy, members of the Gurdwara Management Committee as well as some of his well-wishers made individual financial contributions to establish a trust in Mr. Johal’s name. We wanted to do something relating to youth and sports in Mr. Johal’s name in Richmond. In Richmond for the past several years and every year a very popular tournament called Nations Cup takes place. Thousands of people from all over Metro Vancouver take part. Hundreds of up and coming young soccer players representing their countries of birth /heritage enjoy their participation in this tournament. We realized that supporting this tournament in some way would be an excellent way to remember this icon of our community.

That is why we are increasing funding to this program by $500,000 and investing a total of $3.4 million annually so that people across the province can gain essential skills that will give them more confidence in reading, writing, math and using a computer at work, school, and in their own life.

Grants help improve access to fresh food in remote communities Two northern First Nations communities will have greater access to nutritious food through grants for Indigenous-led food security projects.

National Ride 2022 for Cause by Sikh Motorcycle Club Canada to support Diabetes Canada Last Sunday, July 31, the Sikh Motorcycle Club of Canada conducted a motorcycle ride at same time in different provinces across Canada, with chapters from British Columbia, Ontario, Winnipeg, Saskatchewan and Alberta participating. During the ride, local Gurdwaras and businesses were visited and donations were collected. Apart from the members of the Sikh Motorcycle Club, about 50 bikers from Muslim Riders Club and other motorcycle clubs participated in this ride. Radio RED FM set up a live on location to spread the word and Sanjha TV broadcast the live streaming of the ride all day.

Abbotsford School District offers Summer Explorers Program This summer Abbotsford School District again offered a K-8 Summer Enhancement Program called Summer Explorers which ran July 4-21 in 5 school sites around Abbotsford. This program is open to any interested students in Abbotsford and parents can register their children online on the school district website in May. The celebration of learning held by the Summer Explorers staff and students at the Dave Kandal Elementary School site ended with an impromptu dance party led by Educational Assistant Kam Kooner. Mrs. Kooner invited the audience to come up and celebrate the students’ hard work by joining them in some Bhangra dance to a song by Diljit Dosanjh, Vibe.

Known as OTs, occupational therapists are licensed health professionals who help people affected by injuries and various conditions.
