Your bank might not be the first place that comes to mind when looking for support on everything from housing to jobs. But thanks to people like Heidi Hemdan - once a newcomer herself - this is exactly what you might find.

meant it was challenging for Heidi to get a lease on an apartment or trying to find a job – facets many newcom ers struggle with. But, as a Heidi learned during her journey, there are a few tips for success to help newcom ers settle in sooner:

“As a newcomer, it’s extremely help ful to have access to a team of people that are able to provide unique sup port, guidance and relevant resources based on your experience and lan guage skills,” says Heidi Hemdan, Branch Manager at RBC and a leader of one of RBC’s Newcomer Advisor Teams. “One of the special things about our team is that we are all new comers ourselves, who intimately understand the obstacles faced.”

Newcomers play a critical role in the social and economic development of Canada, but many struggle to access the resources and advice needed to find their footing and thrive in their new home country – such as profes sional networks or in-language sup port and advice.

● Set realistic goals – Be flex ible and ready to pivot. For example, credentials from one country may not be applicable elsewhere. Use what transferable skills you have to get started and learn more about the new environment you’re in.

Moving to another country and arriv ing without credit or a local reference

● Research your resources –There are lots of resources available both online and when you land to help you get settled and it’s important to know about them before arriving. Working abroad or traveling is very different from living in a new coun try.

Vancouver City Council is an obvious example. Mayor Kennedy Stewart has city staff quietly driving ahead with a plan to bring in road pricing for downtown Vancouver.

To out-of-touch political leaders and government bureaucracy, it makes perfect sense to force everyone com ing downtown to pay more. Not sur prisingly, those forgotten in this illconceived tax grab will be working men and women, seniors, students, and small businesspeople.

In fact, too often local politicians fail to fully grasp the unintended outcomes of their decisions and end up doing things that make housing and transportation more expensive for families. They compound the challenges with every piece of red tape, new tax, added fee and seem ingly endless delays in much needed housing and infrastructure projects.

ICBA Op-Ed: For Affordability, Cities Need Stronger Leadership

With inflation making life more unaffordable than ever in British Columbia as we head into a local government election cycle, it’s tough to muster much confidence that our political leaders at city halls will be offering any real relief on important pocketbook issues.

You may also be in terested in this brandnew edition of ICBA’s Construction Moni tor, which includes re search and analysis on municipal effects on housing affordability. Click HERE for this 4-page PDF.

All this in a city that is already one of North America’s most expensive places to live. A recent CD Howe Institute study shows that Vancou ver homeowners pay an average of $644,000 in government taxes and fees on every newly built home –that’s nearly half the price of a new home and its more than twice the percentage paid in taxes, fees and regulations compared to Toronto.

other city councils are following Vancouver’s lead by hik ing fees and restricting supply. It’s a shocking and expensive fact that

But CMHC also provided a solution, bring more housing supply on to the market. This point was reiterated by the Bank of Canada - in fact every objective analysis of the housing af

The opportunity – elect candidates who will propose concrete ways to streamline bureaucracy, cut red tape, look for opportunities to speed up project approvals and permits, and hold the line on taxes and fees.

Voters in municipal elections this October can send a clear message and elect mayors and councillors commit ted to doing something meaningful about affordability.

It’s so bad, that two years ago, the World Bank ranked Canada #64 in the world in the length of time it takes to approve and permit a project.

On the one hand, people are desper ately pleading for affordable hous ing, one the other, they pack council chambers in cities across BC railing against change in their neighbour hoods, forcing councils into full Earlierretreat.

many projects take longer to get ap proved and permitted than to build.

fordability crisis we are now living through comes to the same conclu sion, supply is not keeping pace with demand, and we need to build more and build it faster.

Yes, wages for people working in construction are increasing and build ing supplies cost more and take lon ger to order. But it’s municipalities that have the single biggest influence on the cost of construction projects.

Support those who have the ideas –and the courage – to stand up to the not-in-my-backyard activists who are making our communities less welcoming, less inclusive, and more expensive.

this year, the Canada Mort gage and Housing Commission (CMHC) issued a report that laid out the facts on housing affordability and stated that the last time housing was affordable in Canada was in 2003 –two decades ago. What has happened over the last 20 years, a cascade of red tape, regulations, taxes, fees and never-ending debates and delays on the desirability of new projects.

Led by chemistry profes sor Erika Plettner, SFU researchers and members of the beekeeping indus try are currently trialing the potential treatment at apiaries in British Columbia and Alberta.

So far, Plettner says the results are regularlyoniestheunderneathwithstickyputResearchersaging.encourdownsheetsagridtestcolandsift

At one of the test sites in South Surrey, researchers are conducting a random ized trial involving 40 bee colonies that have been exposed to the varroa mite.

A new chemical com pound discovered by Simon Fraser University researchers could help honeybees around the world fight off deadly mite infestations.

“We discovered a substance that can paralyze the mites and eventually kill them, and it doesn’t seem to have too much of an effect on the bees. These field trials are very important to demon strate efficacy in the colonies and are the next milestone toward actually using the treatment for real,” says Plettner.

of the size of the problem, it is worldwide,” says Plettner. “In Canada, we register colony loses every year due to a variety of causes during wintering, but the weakness that the mites cause is definitely a factor.”

A limited amount of chemical treatments currently exists, but mites are starting to show signs of resistance so new treat ments need to be added to the mix of options available to protect bee colonies in the long term.

The compound being trialed by SFU is codenamed 3C36.

They document and compare the num ber of dead mites found in hives being randomly treated with 3C36, a control substance (one of the currently approved treatments) and those that are left un

“Thetreated.sticky sheets under the hives help us take a snapshot of what’s falling down and we can take them back to the lab, put them under a microscope and count them,” says Plettner. “It’s very promis ing. We have noticed that our compound does cause greater mite fall than the control group.”

If the team continues to see success, they plan to look for licensing partners and seek to gain federal approval for the compound to be deemed safe for use.

“At this point, varroa management is a reality of beekeeping. In order to do this successfully and not lose our tools to resistance – which is just a part of evolution – we need to use different tools throughout the years,” said Plettner. “Having very sick honeybees is not a good thing for other insects as well, since the viral diseases the mites vector can spread. This is why, as beekeepers, we have a responsibility to make sure our bees are healthy.”

Dr. James Mandigo, Provost and Vice President, Academic, is happy to welcome Dr. Sivia to her new role.

Dr. Awneet Sivia to be UFV’s next Associate Vice-President, Teaching and Learning

Dr. Sivia is currently an associate pro fessor in the UFV Teacher Education department and program chair of the Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Mentorship degree. She has worked at UFV since 2011 and replaces Dr. Maureen Wideman in the AVP Teaching and Learning role on September 1, 2022.

“I am thrilled that Dr. Sivia has agreed to serve as UFV’s next As sociate Vice-President for Teaching and Learning. Not only does Awneet bring the experience and expertise to this position, but also the passion to lead what is needed to support ex cellence for life-long learning. I also want to thank Dr. Maureen Wideman for her tremendous leadership as the outgoing AVP, Teaching and Learn ing. UFV is so fortunate to have such strong supporters of teaching and learning.”

Her teaching and educational leader ship are guided by himmat, a Punjabi word encompassing attributes such as courage, heart, daring, fearlessness, commitment, strength, and resolve.

Dr. Awneet Sivia has been selected as UFV’s next Associate Vice-President, Teaching and Learning.

Dr. Sivia has won three teaching awards in the past 14 months. She was UFV’s Teaching Excellence award winner in 2021 and received the inaugural West Coast Teaching Excellence Award in April 2022. More recently, she received the prestigious 3M National Teaching Fellowship, and travelled to Ottawa to receive the award and take part in a national conference on teaching excellence.

She has been a member of the UFV Race and Anti-Racism Network, the President’s task force on Equity, Di versity, and Inclusion, and a Teacher Education group that received in novation funding to develop social justice activities. She also worked with educators from across BC on a South Asian curriculum development project as part of the South Asian Canadian Legacy Project.

Dr. Sivia is excited about taking on this new role.

A message from Dr. James Mandigo, Provost and VP Academic:

“I am honoured and excited to be the next AVP Teaching and Learning at UFV. It is a tremendous opportunity to work with the great team in the TLC towards an institutional vision of excellence in teaching and learn ing. I feel committed to that vision and hopeful about working together with the division members and along side others to build on the strong record of innovation and excellence already evident at UFV.

“As a lifelong educator, having ex perience in both the K-12 and postsecondary systems, I am passionate about the education of the ‘whole’ student. When students come to UFV, my hope is that they experi ence an education that furthers their ‘life chances’ through powerful and impactful learning experiences in the courses and programs of study avail able to them. I look forward to the challenges and exciting work ahead of re-envisioning and re-imagining teaching and learning in this next phase of UFV’s evolution as a stellar post-secondary option for students.”

Mike Rauch and Jared White were the first two candidates to announce their bid for Abbotsford School Trustee and now they are joining forces under the banner of “Partners in Education Ab botsford”. According to Rauch, he and White have talked over the years about opportunities for improvement in the Abbotsford School District. “We both feel more can be done to improve com munication with parents and to ensure our communities feel like they are part of the decision-making process,” says Rauch. He and White have both expe rienced challenges when advocating to the school district on behalf of parents.

In 2018, White launched a last-minute campaign when he was frustrated with the lack of parent consultation as the district moved away from a K-7 format in rural schools. “It was clear that the decision to make that change was made long before a thorough consul tation process had happened,” recalls White. In the 2018 election White fell short of success by a mere 28 votes.

pleased to welcome Bryan Slusarchuk and Kevin Dhali wal, two passionate supporters of the Fraser Valley Bandits since their inception, into our league as coowners of the Bandits,” said CEBL Commissioner and Co-Founder Mike Morreale. “Kevin and Bryan have long been strong supporters of basketball in British Columbia. They share our vision for develop ing Canadian talent and for being community-based where everyone can engage in basketball as a player, coach, fan, or community or business partner. With the CEBL’s Champion ship Weekend scheduled to be held at Langley Events Centre in August of 2023, the future for the Bandits is tremendously exciting.”

“The CEBL is the most exciting thing to happen in Canadian pro sports in decades and the Bandits are a marquee franchise within the league,” Bryan Slusarchuk said.

stretching from British Columbia to Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Bandits join Scarborough as the second league franchise operated by outside ownership and become the first of the original six founding mem bers to be purchased by new owners. The CEBL was founded in 2018 as a single entity owned league with six franchises. Today, the CEBL has 10 franchises located in six provinces

“Bryan and I are thrilled to align to create more opportunities to bring youth and families closer to a sport that has captured the hearts and minds of Canadians. The CEBL is uniting local communities through the power of basketball and we are committed to ensuring that families and friends feel connected and energized by the world-class experience of Bandits games,” Dhaliwal said. “Growing up in the Lower Mainland, I was fortunate to be coached by mentors who taught me the importance of teamwork and collaboration. We are keen to continue deepening our roots in the community and to inspire local youth by giving them an opportunity to be supported by and to be part of one of the best pro sports leagues in AlongCanada.”with the sale and purchase of the Bandits, Tuesday’s announcement also included unveiling new brand ing for the team, now known as the Vancouver Bandits. As part of their acquisition, Dhaliwal and Slusarchuk purchased territorial exclusivity for the rights to own and operate a CEBL franchise in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley Regional District. Metro Vancouver consists of 21 municipalities and the Fraser Val ley is home to six. After moving to Langley Events Centre, the Bandits saw an increased percentage of its fans hail from Burnaby, Coquitlam, Richmond, Surrey and Vancouver. This in conjunction with the territo

rial acquisition informed the club’s decision to incorporate “Vancouver” in its name as a means of better rep resenting the broader scope of cities across the two regions that Bandits fans come from.

The only First Division Professional League Partner of Canada Basketball, the CEBL season runs May through August. More information is avail able at CEBL.ca and @cebleague on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook and YouTube.

The Bandits are the founding brand under the umbrella of Bandits Sports & Entertainment (BSE), which is an ownership group jointly led by Dhaliwal, Founder and President of Essence Properties, and Slusarchuk, Co-Founder of K92 Mining Inc. and Principal of SluzCap. Through their shared passion for sport, the two coowners launched the partnership with a goal of supporting the community through year-round collaborations with partners in the entertainment and sports sectors. BSE is fuelled by Dhaliwal and Slusarchuk’s involve ment in local sports as former high school athletes and today as com munity partners of various events, tournaments and more.

The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Tuesday that the Fraser Valley Bandits have been purchased by local business leaders Kevin Dhaliwal and Bryan Slusarchuk and will be rebranded as the Vancouver Bandits. The team will continue to play at Langley Events Centre, where the Bandits played the 2022 season following three seasons in “TheAbbotsford.CEBLis

Rebranded as Vancouver Bandits, club will continue play in Langley

“Rebranding the name to Vancouver is in line with the CEBL’s move to ward Canada’s largest markets,” Mor reale added. “We recently relocated one franchise from Guelph to Cal gary, and of course last season added teams in Montreal, Scarborough, and in Atlantic Canada’s second-largest city, St. John’s. We have six teams playing within the six largest metro politan areas in Canada, and all 10 of

our teams are located within the 19 largest urban centres in the country.”

Following the purchase of the Ban dits, Vancouver Island and the Okana gan region will continue as strong prospects for potential CEBL expan sion due to their corporate communi ties and notable basketball histories.

The updated Bandits logo maintains the original fox icon that has been a key facet of the club’s branding since 2018 while introducing a reimagined wordmark that showcases a sleek font defined by rounded edges and a line that runs through the “Bandits” text. The line represents the trails and roads that are the veins of two regions that are home to youth, commuters and families who live, work and play throughout the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley’s natural beauty and metropolitan hubs. Further enhanc ing the new logo is the incorporation of the colour black, which will be used as the fourth colour in the club’s brand kit and serves as a subtle nod to the rain and dark skies for which the Pacific Northwest is known.

Fraser Valley Bandits Sold to Local Ownership

The Fraser Valley Bandits were in troduced as the sixth CEBL franchise on July 16, 2018. The logo was an orange fox wearing a bandit mask and the team’s primary colours were orange, navy and white. The team finished with a 4-16 record during the 2019 inaugural season, and 4-2 during the 2020 CEBL Summer Se ries season and reached the CEBL Championship game. The Bandits were 7-7 and reached the semifinals of Championship Weekend during the abbreviated 2021 season. The Bandits finished fourth in the regular season standings this summer with a 12-8 record and were eliminated by the Guelph Nighthawks in a post-season play-in game at Langley Events

was a founding mem ber of the CEBL when the league launched in 2018 with six teams in four provinces. Since then, the league has expanded to 10 teams in six prov inces, making it the largest pro sports league in Canada with further expan sion planned. The CEBL has the high est percentage of Canadian players of any pro league in the country with 71 percent of its current team rosters being Canadian. Players bring experi ence from the NBA, NBA G League, top international leagues, the Cana dian National team program, and top NCAA programs as well as U Sports.

“Being a season ticket member and community partner has allowed me to witness firsthand that the Bandits are focused on building a sustainable footprint in the region by growing all areas of the game from the youth to the pro level. I was fortunate to have great basketball coaches that instilled a drive and work ethic in me that I am grateful for to this day. Kevin and I are excited to build on the strong foundation that has been set by the club and to elevate the Bandits to greater heights by working together with the community to promote these core values that we care about.”

EI premiums are deducted from your pay at a rate set each year by the fed eral government. Your employer also contributes to EI, which provides you with temporary financial assistance while unemployed and looking for work or if you’re upgrading your skills.

Canadian employers are required to make three deductions from em ployee paycheques. The first covers income tax, the second is a contribu tion to Employment Insurance (EI) and the third goes into the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) Fund. There can be others – union dues or covering an employer-sponsored retirement plan for example – but these three apply

CPP contributions

Government enhancements to expand CPP are designed to replace about a third of your average annual wages, up to an annual limit.

The Fund provides workers and their families with a basic level of income in retirement. The contribution is deducted from your pay if you are 18 years of age or older and earn more than $3,500 per year.

The CPP Fund is designed to provide you with a portion of your retirement income, in addition to what you can save elsewhere. It is funded through employee and em ployer contribu tions, along with in vestment earnings.

How the deductions are used

CPP Investments, the professional investment organization that invests the CPP Fund independent of govern ment. Investments are diversified by asset class and geography so that the Fund remains resilient as it achieves growth in global markets over time. This active management approach has resulted in assets of $523 billion and an average annual return during the past ten years of 10.3 percent after all costs, as of June 30, 2022.

While your deductions for income tax and EI go into general government revenues, CPP deductions are treated differently. They are credited to a special ‘CPP account’ that can only be used to pay out current retirement and other benefits and CPP expenses. Any funds left over are transferred to

Understanding your paycheque

of income tax deducted is based on how much you make and includes deductions for taxable benefits, such as parking or a leased Employmentvehicle.
