Construction starting on Abbotsford Police Department Headquarters

Construction is starting on the expan sion and renovation of the Abbotsford Police Department Headquarters. The updated building will provide officers and civilian staff with the space and tools to do their jobs safely and effec tively as they strive to make Abbots ford the safest city in BC by suppress ing gang violence, reducing property crime related offences, engaging with our diverse community and more.

The new site significantly expands the size of the current headquarters, which was built in 1988 for the Matsqui Po lice Department when just 74 officers along with a complement of support staff served a population of 58,000 residents. With currently nearly 350 officers and staff supporting a commu nity of 157,000 the new building will provide additional workspace, change rooms, parking, jail cells, bail hearing rooms, a breathalyzer room and allow for growth for years to come as the community of Abbotsford continues to grow.

Construction will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, over the next 30 or so months, with limited construction done on weekends and holidays. Phase 1, the expansion of the current headquarters will run from Sep tember 2022 to Fall 2023. The current site will be renovated so it integrates seamlessly with the expansion, which will take place from Fall 2023 to Win ter 2024/early 2025.

While parking will remain available to visitors and individuals working in the Civic Precinct during construction, access to the area and parking at City Hall, Abbotsford Police Department, University of the Fraser Valley, The Reach Gallery Museum and the Clear brook Library will be impacted, and in some cases moved to a nearby area. Maps are available on the City’s web site and throughout the Civic Precinct to guide visitors. Visitors are asked to give themselves extra time to get to where they are going and anticipate construction-related disruptions on site.

More communities benefit from active transportation infrastructure

People in communities throughout B.C. will have more opportunities to choose walking, biking and other sus tainable travel options as this year’s Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants program opens for applications.

“Strong and accessible connections are a cornerstone of healthy and thriving communities,” said Rob Fleming, Min ister of Transportation and Infrastruc ture. “As a result of our investments in this program, more people are choosing active transportation for recreation, and to get to work and school. This supports our CleanBC goals and cre ates economic opportunities across the Inprovince.”addition

to building active trans portation improvements into new provincial infrastructure, the Province is investing $60 million in communityled active transportation infrastructure projects through the Active Transpor tation Grants Program during the next three “Safe, years.active infrastructure in communities all across the province means that people have more choices about the way they choose to travel,” said Bowinn Ma, Minister of State for Infrastructure.

“Enabling more trips to be taken by bike or on foot helps us drive down transportation greenhouse gas emissions while improving the physi cal and mental well-being of people and families in British Co Throughlumbia.”

the program, the Province partners with Indigenous, local and regional governments to make costsharing investments of up to $500,000 in infrastructure, including enhanced sidewalk safety, protected bike lanes and multi-use paths, and end-of-trip connections to public transit, employ ment, schools and other services.

The application period for this year’s program opened Sept. 6, 2022, and will remain open until Oct. 21, 2022.

“B.C. communities are upgrading and expanding travel options designed for those who walk or ride,” said Laurey Anne Roodenburg, City of Quesnel councillor and president of the Union

of B.C. Municipalities. “These invest ments strengthen community health, ease congestion and support lowcarbon travel. I appreciate the provin cial commitment to this much-needed Theprogram.”Province has increased funding for this program to $20 million in 2022. This boost will help more shovelready active transportation projects in B.C. cross the finish line, such as the Westbank First Nation’s Old Okana gan Highway/Louie Drive Sidewalk project, which built bike lanes, a new sidewalk and added new lighting to increase safety for pedestrians in 2020.

“The completion of the Old Okanagan Highway/Louie Drive Sidewalk proj ect was an important step our com munity took to continue promoting healthier living, active lifestyles, and safe travel for our members, residents and visitors,” said Andrea Alexander, Westbank First Nation councillor.

“People are choosing to ride bikes or walk now instead of driving cars, help ing to keep our air clean and our carbon output down. We are grateful to have had the Province as a partner for this important project.”

The percentage of provincial funding is determined by a cost-sharing formula that supports Indigenous communities and communities with smaller popula tion tax bases. Investments through the Active Transportation Infrastructure Grant program will help meet the in frastructure needs of Indigenous, rural and urban communities, so people of all ages and abilities can benefit from better connections between neighbour hoods, schools, work, transit stations and town centres.

New connectivity funding program open for applications

The Province’s new funding program that supports expanding high-speed internet services to under-served rural, remote and Indigenous com munities is open for applications.

On March 8, 2022, the governments of British Columbia and Canada an nounced an agreement to invest as much as $830 million, contributing $415 million each, to support improv ing and expanding broadband con nectivity infrastructure throughout B.C. This builds on the Province’s investments to date and includes a $289-million commitment an nounced in Budget 2022.

This funding will be disbursed through the Connecting Communi ties BC program and supports the Province’s target of connecting all remaining under-served households to high-speed internet access by 2027.

Eligible applicants can apply for funding that supports expanding broadband to areas that do not have access to internet speeds of at least 50 megabits per second (Mbps) download speed and 10 Mbps upload speed. This is the target speed for the universal service objective set by the Canadian Radio-television and Tele communications Commission, the federal telecom regulatory agency. The program will consider applica tions for projects that meet or exceed these speeds.

The B.C. government’s commitment to support expansion of high-speed internet services to all communities by 2027 aims to level the playing field for British Columbians, clos ing the digital divide and ensuring every community has better access to jobs, education, training, health care and new, diversified economic opportunities

Abbotsford builds back stronger with new drinking water system

The Province is providing $62 million to the City of Abbotsford to build a new well and water-treatment system to ensure a reliable, resilient water service for more than 165,000 people in response to growing climaterelated “We’rethreats.creating a new, resilient water supply that will help ensure a safe water source during extreme weather events,” said Nathan Cullen, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “This project will create climate resilience by helping protect people, sustain public health services and keep busi nesses operating during these everincreasing climate disasters.”

Upgrades and additions to the Ab botsford drinking water system will mean water reliability and safety for Abbotsford, Mission and the Mats qui First Nation, as well as homes, a regional cancer facility, senior care homes, farms and agricultural processing.

“The City of Abbotsford is truly grate ful for this significant investment by the Province in a new drinking water system for our residents,” said Henry Braun, mayor of Abbotsford. “A more reliable and resilient water source is one of our community’s most criti cal infrastructure needs, and we are thankful to be receiving support for this vital project.”

The current water source is vulner able to climate-related events, such as floods or wildfires, and was com promised during the November 2021 floods, which caused 85% of Abbots ford’s water supply to be offline.

“Climate resiliency is essential for not only the health and safety of people in our communities but also for their peace of mind,” said Pam Alexis, MLA for Abbotsford-Mission. “We know the damage that atmospheric rivers can wreak, and by tackling these climate threats head on, Abbots ford and the surrounding area will be better prepared for the future.”

system remains reliable in the event of a climate disaster is essential to the future of the economy of the region, and to the well-being of the people that live here,” said Bob D’Eith, MLA for Maple Ridge-Mission. “A number of local industries count on a reliable water supply, including agriculture, senior care, health care and academ ics.”

The Abbotsford Mission Water Sewer Commission operates the drinking water system, which serves the cit ies of Abbotsford and Mission, the Matsqui First Nation and the StaveCedar connection in the Fraser Valley Regional District.

The budget for the Abbotsford Drink ing Water Resilience Project is $84.4 million. The remainder of funding will come from the Abbotsford Mis sion Water Sewer Commission.

Shannon Rose Announces bid for Abbotsford School Trustee

My name is Shannon Rose and I am announcing my bid for Abbotsford School Trustee. I am a CPA (Char tered Professional Accountant), CGA with over 10 years of experience in public accounting and will bring a wealth of financial knowledge and literacy to the board. My past board experience has included being on the executive of Sunnyside Children’s Foundation for several years, as well as the investment committee of the Community Foundation for Kingston & Area.

I have lived in Abbotsford for the past 7 years with my husband, Jim, who is a Radiation Oncologist at the Abbotsford Cancer Centre, and our 2 wonderful daughters, who are currently in elementary and middle school in the Abbotsford School Dis trict. Although Jim and I did not grow up in Abbotsford, this community has become our loving and supporting “family” over the last 7 years.

I have been very actively involved in the Parental Advisory Council (PAC) at my children’s school since my oldest daughter started kindergarten in 2016. I first became interested in the PAC because I knew it would be a great opportunity to give back to my daughter’s school. I have held an executive position on the PAC for the past five of those six years. Not only did I sit on the executive, but I both chaired and sat on several committees over the years. I have loved my in volvement in our school and working with our children and families and, because of this, I wanted to expand my knowledge and be a part of an organization with a greater reach. So,

in 2017, I became a part of the District Parental Advisory Council (DPAC).

For the past 3 years, I have held an executive position with DPAC, which has allowed me to work closely with Abbotsford School District manage ment and gain a greater understand ing of the ongoing work, goals and strategic plans of our District. A highlight of being involved in PAC and DPAC over the last several years is the relationships I have built with incredible people who have a com mon goal of serving and caring for the children and youth of our community through our schools.

Being from a diverse community, I see the great importance of continu ing to build a school community that is inclusive of every child and staff member of the district. Learning from each other is going to be key in our growth and moving forward. I would love to represent our com munity as a School Board Trustee and bring my financial knowledge, my PAC and DPAC ex perience, as well as the perspective of a parent of school aged children to the Trustee team. I want to be a part of a team who strongly believes in and is committed to our future our children and

Communities benefit from new heat preparedness funding

Thirty-six communities, including First Nations and local governments, throughout B.C. will receive pro vincial funding to help prepare for extreme heat and keep people safe. Almost $1.9 million in funding from the Community Emergency Pre paredness Fund (CEPF) will help communities implement extreme heat projects and strategies, such as ex treme heat risk mapping, risk assess ments, extreme heat response plans and climate adaptation planning.

“Given the ongoing effects of climate change in B.C. and around the world, we need to ensure that we’re prepared to respond to extreme heat events now and in the future,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General and Minister Responsible for Emergency Manage

the tools they need to stay safe during extreme heat. In the event of a heat warning or extreme heat emergency, the provincial government and com munities will take appropriate actions based on their individual heat plans and “Weprocesses.knowthat heat events will con tinue to happen more often, so we are taking action to help our communities get prepared and have the necessary resources to deal with these extreme situations,” said Jennifer Rice, Par liamentary Secretary for Emergency Preparedness. “Preparing for and adapting to extreme heat is now a fundamental part of public safety in B.C., and this funding will help en sure communities across the Province are climate ready.”

CEPF is a suite of programs divided

ment BC. “This new funding will be critical in supporting communities to develop their own heat plans and to help protect people, the local envi ronment and local economy from the risks posed by extreme heat.”

CEPF is an important part of the Province’s Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy, and com plements the BC Heat Alert and Response System (BC HARS) that launched this year. The $189-mil lion fund is administered through the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) and supports programs that strength en the resilience of First Nations and local governments to prepare for and respond to natural disasters and climate change.

BC HARS helps ensure people, First Nations and local governments have

into several funding streams, which includes public notification and evacuation planning, emergency support services, and disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation, which includes flood-risk reduction.

Since 2017, First Nations and local governments have received more than $50.8 million through CEPF for more than 1,000 projects that help communities mitigate and prepare for disasters and climate-related

Preparedness and Ad aptation Strategy is supported by more than $500 million in Budget 2022 to help people and communities throughout British Columbia prepare for climate change effects in the near term, while setting the foundation for future action.

Preet Rai is running for a fifth term in the upcoming election on October 15th. Preet has been on the Board of Education for 10 years. “It is an honor and privilege to serve as a School trustee and it only happens with public support”.

“My upbringing instilled both a desire and sense of responsibility around family, community involvement and education. It was a driving factor when I first ran for school trustee and it is the reason I am seeking re-election.”

A chartered accountant from India, Preet immigrated to the United Kingdom, in 1992, where he worked for the Scottish Government. Then, to Canada in 1995 and has been working for the Government of British Columbia since

“Having1997.

a global perspective, I am always taken a keen interest in community, social and cultural activities. My wife is a teacher in Abbotsford. We have three children; all of them have attended or attend Abbotsford public schools. My mother was a teacher and my father retired as a Colonel from the India army.”

students and answering well thought out questions by middle and high school students. Being in a cold dunk thank on sports days was chilly at the time but is warm memories now.”

“In my close interactions with students at Abbyfest, Heritage fair and other community events, I have witnessed the pride they feel in volunteering and displaying their talent, which in turn gives me energy and keeps me focussed on looking into best opportunities to prepare students to reach their full potential and be successful. I believe in Abbotsford School District’s strategic direction focussing on student success with individual learning, choice and parent involvement”.

Rai’s community involvement is not limited to his role as school trustee. He has served on the Community of Character Council, Abbotsford Youth Commission, Abby Fest Board, the Reach Board, Literacy Matters Board, Sister City Committee, the Canuck Place Campaign Executive Committee, and the South Asian Taskforce for the fundraising of the new Canuck Place Hospice built in Abbotsford in 2014. He immensely enjoys organizing over 100 volunteers yearly for Abbyfest.

“In my six years of being a school trustee, I have particularly enjoyed visiting schools throughout the district. I have relished reading to kindergarten

Set your teen up for school year success

(NC) Settling into the new school year can mean exciting changes for any family. For older teens, it might mean setting up a new dorm room, joining campus clubs or choosing a major at school. Whatever your young adult’s path, essays, exams and studying are a Butgiven.allthis independence also equals more risk and it’s important to have conversations about being responsible – especially online. While it once seemed extravagant for teens to own

their own desktop computer, never mind a laptop, it’s now commonplace, and in many instances, a requirement.

Teaching your teen or young adult safe and smart ways to use technology can protect them online. Have open and honest conversations about computer and internet use, from how to safely share information, to reporting online bullying, and even how and why to limit screen time.

Once you’re confident your teen is pre pared to handle everything that comes

with having their own laptop, it’s time to help them choose. Look for something lightweight with long battery life that en ables them to play and work from anywhere, whether it’s the library, the classroom or a coffee shop, and also offers enhanced security. The LG gram includes a feature called LG Glance by Mirametrix which blurs the screen when it senses someone is standing behind you. It also comes with other enhanced AI features and a 16:10

Life will become very busy from now to March. It would be wise to pace yourself when it comes to any situation, but particularly work, that you enthusiastically take on between now and late October. Your energy level won’t be as robust from then until Christmas, as it might be at the moment. Other people can be changeable.

You will need to be mindful of your spending up to March – you are not in a position to see these matters clearly. This could be because unexpected expense could arise and if you have been frivolous beforehand, it could worry you. Getting something new, organising a holiday or taking up a new interest will appeal to you right now.

Mars has moved into your sign where it will stay for an especially long period until March. This is generating the beginning of a new 2 year cycle but there could be many stops and starts. You might also change your mind. Your energy level will be good. Watch impulsiveness. Distractions will come thick and fast, so be prepared.

You will need much patience between now and March. There will be a lot going on that will be hidden from view. This could include people working to pull you down in some way. Be mindful of any new agreements that may have just been reached or that occur shortly. This could operate in two stages before it will become settled.

If you haven’t seen a lot of your friends for a while – that could begin to change from now with a lot more contact through to March. Anything that might involve you with a group of people will become busier, as well as perhaps changeable. It would be wise to make balanced decisions now on the obligations you can manage.

The New Moon this week occurs in your sign, providing you with the opportunity to take a new look at what you want and where you stand in life. Be very careful of impulsively taking on new responsibilities as these could cause chaos up to March with anything that has been well ordered, bringing many distractions into your life.

Mercury, the planet of thought and communication moves into your sign where it will remain for the first time until 23rd September. There will be the need to rethink things after that. Future opportunities can be rather exciting up to March but even these will go through change. Unpredictability requires you to keep an open mind.

The true intentions of others will be highly unpredictable to March. There could also be secretiveness involved. This will make it hard to for you to feel as though you have any control. It would be wise of you to find some time to yourself away from distractions for thinking, as matters may not be what you presently believe.

Life will be super busy when it comes to interaction with others up to March. This could bring people from the past back into your life later in the year or bring up a situation again that you thought was settled. From mid January, you can be more certain of the way things will be. Other people can easily distract you as well.

Whatever you need to manage on a daily basis can become hectic and full of distractions to March. You will need to keep your wits about you when it comes to maintaining routines. This will be an excellent time to get into more exercise, if you have been contemplating it for a while. It will be up and down but you will persist.

Doing the things that you enjoy needs to be the main theme from now to March. More social activity can have ways of presenting themselves. Life has had a serious tone since late 2020 and this can be the beginning of moving on from that. If there is a hobby or interest you have considered, this would be the time to take it up.

Home and/or family will become the focus to March. If there is anything you have wanted to get done at home, there should be plenty of opportunity to do so. You need to expect stops and starts though. Conflict might arise in the family. This will not be sorted quickly, so be patient to go through the ups and downs that will occur.

He immi grated to Canada in 1972 at the age of 23 and soon after settled in Abbotsford. Nachhattar was a pillar in the Sikh Community and lived his life with utmost integrity and honesty. Nachhattar was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend to many. He leaves behind his loving wife, Gurmail Kaur and his beloved children Satwinder (Raj) and Suky (Ranjit). How to get your house organized this fall

(NC) There’s something about the fresh autumn air, changing leaves and kids settling into schoolyard rhythms that make many of us feel like it’s time to restore order to the home. Here are some steps to remember for an easy and comprehensive clean out.

Review your systems

Everyone has their own way of or ganizing; maybe your method was a set of rules you learned from your parents, or maybe you developed a haphazard process out of sheer ne cessity. Either way, take some time to evaluate what’s working for you now and what isn’t doing you any favours at this point in your life. You may be surprised at how much better your system becomes.

Cut down on the clutter

The less stuff you have, the less messy things can get, and the less you must clean and organize. So,

take stock of what you own and what you need, and then get rid of what you don’t want or require. While a family with young kids will amass more stuff than a retiree who lives on their own, the principle remains the same and can make organizing easier in the long Don’trun.

forget your digital life

It’s easy to miss organizing the intan gible aspects of the home like your online accounts or the apps on your phone. Regularly taking the time to check on your accounts, update any weak or repeated passwords, and update your software and operating systems will help protect you from cyber threats like phishing.
