The Patrika Automobile Review: 2022 Toyota Mirai Limited – Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered Magic!
Review By Veeno Dewan. You may not be too familiar with The Toyota Mirai, its not a gasoline, hybrid or fully electric (EV) vehicle, but the latest ver sion of Toyotas hydrogen fuelcell powered four door sedan. It is what termed as a FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) powered by a hydro gen fuel cell energy storage system. How it works is basically – the fuel cell technology combines hydrogen from a storage tank with oxygen drawn from the atmosphere to produce electricity, that drives the electric motors that motivate the car. The only emission is clean water! Not only is that impres sive, but the Mirai is has a driving range at an incredible 674 kilometres and only takes five minutes to fill a full tank of hydrogen!
Power is rated at a modest 151 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque. The transmission is via a one-speed direct-drive system to the rear wheels, and there is still an electric battery component that aids the Mirai in all-out acceleration. Note that there are only a handful of hydrogen filling stations in B.C for now.
For 2022, the Mirai enters its secondgeneration based on the Lexus LS sedan platform with rear-wheel-drive, while the previous generation was front-wheel drive. It is also roomier than its predecessor and features an upgraded infotainment system with a large 12.3-inch touchscreen.
The Mirai Limited as tested ($76,950) adds panoramic moonroof, multicolour interior ambient lighting, allround 8-way (front) power heated and ventilated seats, Perforated SofTex®Trim for the seats, 20” inch Chrome Wheels, Three-Zone Automatic Cli mate Control Power Rear Trunk Door Advanced Park and more.
Safety is very high, Toyota’s Safety Sense semi-autonomous features have also been upgraded to 2.5+ sta tus, which means they now include emergency steering assist, Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Lane pedestrian detection, cyclist detection departure alert with steering assist, sway warning system, automatic high beams, dynamic radar cruise con trol, road sign assist, and more. Also, note that Toyota has made the Mirai’s
hydrogen fuel system as safe as pos sible, with crash-resistant composite hydrogen tanks, collision-sensing fuel cut-off valves, and multiple hydrogen sensors to detect any possible leaks or problems.
On the road, the Mirai drives very much like an EV with just some whooshing and whirring from the hy drogen system. Acceleration is instant due to the electric motor format and actually feels faster than the modest with a 0–100 km/h at about 9- sec onds Toyota claims. The Mirai is a relatively heavy car and feels it, with a very solid, stable planted feel. It does have a good degree of agility in the corners where the weight enables it to remain composed with a real big car-like smooth and refined ride on all surfaces. Toyota claims a combined fuel consumption rate for the Mirai of 0.93 kg of hydrogen per 100 km or compared to gasoline cars - L/100KM at 3.1/3.3 (City /highway.), which is excellent.
The Mirai is a big, luxurious car with Lexus like road manners and refine ment It’s not super fast but makes up for that in refinement and comfort. Powered by a bountiful hydrogen, the Mirai needs no fossil fuel whatso ever! Producing only pure water.as a by -product!
A decision on buying the Mirai how ever need to be carefully weighed up. Unless you are close to one of the hy drogen filling stations, it needs think ing about. But the hope is that as the hydrogen filling station infrastructure become more common the Mirai will be the contender for the greenest car on the planet. A wonderful fuel efficient, luxurious vision of the future right here and right now.
2022 Toyota Mirai Limited priced from $$76,75 plus options and fees. Price as tested: $78,951.

Virtual
moves forward in Fraser Health
Moving health care services online so quickly to protect those most at risk of infection and prevent transmission of COVID-19 made it difficult to thoroughly evaluate and research vir tual care in the Fraser Health. Now, that research is moving forward, thanks to a three-year, $500,000 grant from the Health Research Foundation of Innovative Medicines Canada.
The Research Team Grant in Virtual Care will enable Fraser Health, in partnership with researchers from Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia, to
for Research and Knowledge Trans lation for Virtual Health at Fraser Health. “This grant will afford us the opportunity to address the ‘digital divide’ – that is, who is and isn’t ac cessing our virtual services and how we can better serve underrepresented people in our region.”
The research team will examine mo bile phone ownership, usage, prefer ences, internet access, and e-health literacy among older adults who ac cess primary care. While many older Canadians now have access to mobile phones, little information is known
identify innovative ways to com municate virtually with older adults, particularly those with lower socio economic status, ethnic minorities and those with disabilities.
The research project titled: Get the Message? Improving Access to Vir tual Healthcare for Older Adults will focus on three types of messaging used to connect health care provid ers to older patients: text messag ing, emails, and in-app messaging. Known broadly as “patient-provider messaging,” these virtual health solu tions can help improve access to care, reduce risk of disease transmission, and help people stay in their homes and out of hospital.
“As we expand our virtual services in the Fraser Health region, we want to ensure groups that are underrep resented in the planning and roll out have a voice,” says Dr. Megan MacPherson, Regional Practice Lead
about their usage, preferences, and potential limitations (e.g., internet access may be limited for many mar ginalized populations).
Researchers will interview older adults in the region, including resi dents of long-term care, family caregivers, volunteers, and staff in care homes.
“Digital transformation is founda tional to the delivery of health ser vices now and in the future,” says Dr. Victoria Lee, president and CEO, Fraser Health. “The Research Team Grant in Virtual Care will enable our virtual teams to build on the innova tive gains we’ve made and to ensure that we provide equitable care to the residents in our region.
Since 2019, Fraser Health has logged more than 1.8 million virtual visits, with 1.6 million occurring since Janu ary 1, 2020.

B.C. passes Canada's first deliveryfee cap legislation
B.C. has become the first province in Canada, and one of a handful of jurisdictions in North America, to implement a permanent cap on fees charged by food-delivery companies.
The Food Delivery Service Fee Act has received Royal Assent in the Province of British Columbia and will now provide more cost certainty to restaurant and bar owners through out the province.
“Shifting consumer habits throughout the pandemic led to B.C.’s restaurant industry continuously adapting to stay open and serve their customers,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation. “By passing legislation to make the
vice-president, Restaurants Canada. “Being the first province in Canada to make this fee cap permanent, B.C. is demonstrating the type of forwardthinking solutions that will help the restaurant sector remain viable for the long term.”
According to the BC Restaurant and Foodservices Association, B.C.’s restaurants were closed fewer days than any other jurisdiction in North America. The Food Delivery Service Fee Act joins other ongoing supports, including the ability of bars and tour ism operators with liquor licences to purchase beer, wine and spirits per manently at wholesale prices and the authorization of thousands of Tempo rary Expanded Service Areas, helping
delivery fee cap a permanent support for restaurants, we’re leading Canada in providing more stability and cer tainty to the sector itself, and to the delivery drivers who work within it.”
B.C.’s cap limits the fees for core services that delivery companies can charge restaurants to no more than 20% of the dollar value of an order, echoing similar permanent caps en acted by Seattle and San Francisco.
Restaurant and bar owners facing on going challenges from the pandemic and global inflation will no longer need to worry about delivery fees as high as 30% returning when the temporary cap would have expired at the end of the year.
“Restaurants still have some in credible hurdles to overcome in recovering from the pandemic and inflation,” said Mark von Schellwitz,
businesses weather the pandemic and serve more patrons while complying with health orders.
The Food Delivery Service Fee Act also prohibits delivery companies from reducing driver compensation, ensuring employees and contractors continue to be paid their wages and gratuities.
“The economy and workforce have changed dramatically in recent years, and we’re seeing the growth of the gig economy and the integral services gig workers provide,” said Adam Walker, Parliamentary Secretary for the New Economy. “That’s why we’ve made sure this legislation protects food-delivery drivers from costs being downloaded onto them from providers, so they can continue to receive fair compensation.”

This special day is known as Gurpurab, which refers to an anniversary of a guru’s birth that is celebrated by holding a festival. Fraser River Forcemain Project Reaches Substantial Completion
The City of Mission has reached sub stantial completion of the forcemain upgrade project, adding the capacity of a new 900mm diameter steel sewer pipe to the city’s infrastructure to meet the needs of the community now and into the future.
“Now that it’s completed, the force main project will be out of sight and out of mind for most in Mission, but it is truly a major accomplishment,” said Mayor Paul Horn. “By complet ing the sewer line, we have ensured that one of our most basic services is maintained and we have protected our river from a potential failure. And, as a bonus, we were also able to elevate a key part of our waterfront above the
disturbance to habitat, and monitor ing works completed during their warranty period. Works left to com plete involve planting, grading, raptor nest replacement, and the construc tion of a deep, off-channel pond with habitat complexing adjacent to Lane Creek to provide overwintering and rearing habitat for salmonids.”
The project will benefit the city for many years. Throughout the project, the team focussed on working with care and respect for the environment front of mind.
“Our team deserves recognition for their dedication to the project,” Horn said. “It is difficult to describe
flood construction level.”
The project was substantially com pleted in mid-May within budget and on schedule. Since then, the team has rebuilt the shoreline and re-armoured it with rock known as rip rap. They are also focussed completing on other minor works and deficiencies.
“They call it the Mighty Fraser River, and crossing it with the Dredge, Drag, and Cover methodology and installing a 900mmØ Steel Pipe was a monumental achievement,” said Jay Jackman, project manager. “Now that the project is substantially complete and the pipe is operational, staff will continue to work on cleaning up minor deficiencies, stabilizing sand, completing works to compensate for
the amount of work required to secure funding from the provincial and federal governments, approvals from government agencies, land-use agreements, and the equipment and expertise to complete this complex project. In today’s economy, getting things done on time and on budget is increasingly difficult, so we are very thankful for everyone’s creativity and commitment.”
See the latest project video: https://youtu.be/ondRNQfpNPg
The Fraser River Forcemain Project is funded in part through a partner ship with the federal and provincial government through the Clean Water & Wastewater Fund (CWWF).

Thomas McMillan has volunteered or fundraised for countless organiza tions for more than 30 years.
He has actively volunteered for the Western Summer Games, B.C. Senior Summer Games; Communities in Bloom program; Ravine Park Salmon Enhancement Society; Fraser Val ley University Science Fair; Fraser Valley Heritage Fair; Fraser Valley
and the Abbotsford Social Activities Association.
Through her involvement with the Abbotsford Farm and Country Mar ket, Settle is the facilitator of the BCAFM Nutrition Coupon Program, where recipients redeem coupons at the market for fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs, cheese, and meat.
“All I can say is that I love Abbots ford,” Settle said in accepting her award. “I just felt, if you’re going to
stepped up to lend a hand to their neighbours. You saw a need, you acted; you pulled together; changed gears; pivoted to meet the needs of those around you. You worked cre atively and tirelessly to support those in our community who were needing it most.”
“It’s actually quite hard to put into words the response I witnessed across the city and the incredible role each of you, here this evening, plays in our community. Your compassion, dedication and your selflessness allows individuals in our com munity to blossom.”
“Tonight, we have the opportunity to shine light on some very exem plary, very extraordinary people who strengthen the fabric of who we are as a community,” said Rod Santiago, Archway CEO, in his opening speech.
Community Builders’ Award Recipi ents
Louise Burns volunteers in the com munity of Abbotsford seven days a week, including three days each week as a driver for Archway Meals on Wheels. Every day, she picks up food donations from Save-On Foods and prepares meals to give out to mar ginalized individuals including youth, seniors and those living on the street. She has connected herself with local organizations such as Ground Zero and Archway to support the needs of the community, and she recently took in a Ukrainian couple who fled the war on their country.
“In many ways, Louise is a onewoman force for food security in Abbotsford,” shared Natalia Deros, Archway Senior Services Supervisor, who introduced Burns.
“She is gifted at creating partnerships with organizations and businesses in Abbotsford. People can’t help but be inspired by her enthusiasm for the
Institute for Canadian Citizenship, and the Salvation Army Kettle Drive.
Much of McMillan’s volunteer work came about through his involvement with Rotary Club, where he helped financially support the Archway Food Bank and Foundry Abbotsford. Rotary has recognized his exemplary service with their highest award, the Paul Harris Fellow Award, 10 times since 1997.
McMillan credited his mother for teaching him that, “If you don’t as sist in community events, volunteer wherever you are able to, and partici pate where you can, the community cannot grow.”
Gwen Settle is well known in Ab botsford for her hours of community service to various non-profit organi zations in Abbotsford with her goal to make our community a better place to live, work and play.
Settle has volunteered her time and efforts with Matsqui Community Hall, Abbotsford Agrifair, Friends of the Abbotsford Libraries; Extended Emergency Support Service; Opera tion Red Nose; the local Royal Ca nadian Legion chapter, The Memory Project for Historica Canada, the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce,

Flood Heroes Awards
Mayor Henry Braun, in one of his last official engagements, introduced the Flood Heroes category. Braun was also recognized by MLA Pam Alexis for his own “unbelievable leadership” during the flood.
Referencing the pandemic and flood ing, Braun said, “It has been during these incredibly challenging times that we were reminded just how im portant community is, and how much we all need each other.”
“Over the last two years, it has been incredibly encouraging to see how many service groups, businesses and individuals from across Abbotsford
One of the flood heroes, Alison Arends, has been actively sup porting people affected by floods since the first days through a va riety of ways. Arends opened her doors to the community and op erated the Crossroads Food Hub out of her barn. The hub offered crockpots of food, warm coffee, free equipment rentals, donated clothing and tools, non-perishable food items, freezer meals, along with a listening ear and a warm smile. She was giving out up to 70 meals a day at the height of the flooding crisis.
In her acceptance speech, Arends thanked all the volunteers and or ganizations that helped her run the Crossroads Food Hub.
Yves Trudel, a regional director at United Way BC, who introduced Arends, said their notion of a com munity champion has been totally redefined and a standard they didn’t know was possible was created.
Gateway Community Church has played an instrumental role in floodrelief efforts. They provided a food pantry, coordinated donations and connected families to lodging. More

One year later: Abbotsford Disaster Relief Fund making a difference through $4.44 million fund
November 14, 2022, marks the oneyear anniversary of the start of the extraordinary two-day rainstorm that pushed the Nooksack River through its banks and caused flooding across the Fraser Valley. Over 3,300 people were evacuated from their homes dur ing the disaster. Farms, businesses, and infrastructure were heavily dam aged or destroyed completely.
In the immediate aftermath, the Abbotsford Disaster Relief Fund (ADRF) was jointly established by the Abbotsford Chamber of Com merce (ACOC), the Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF), and the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV). This coalition has raised a total of $4.44 million from over 6,100 individual donations.
Fundraising began within two days of the flood. The ADRF set up an online hub and thanks to local and national media coverage, donations started pouring in ― one every 20 seconds. Generosity came in amounts from $5 from individuals to corporate dona tions of $512,000. Support rolled in from across Canada and as far away as Australia and Taiwan. In the first two weeks, the ADRF raised over $1.5 million to help those impacted.
Eighty percent of the total funding donated, or $3.5 million, has been distributed. Nearly $2 million of that total was directly administered to lo cal farmers and businesses, and the remaining amount was distributed to frontline grassroots organizations who have helped people most im pacted by the flood.
Milt Walker, who led aid distribution at Gateway Church in Abbotsford, says the money from the fund helped community members kick-start their recovery.
“We recognized that when people rebuilt their homes, they were go ing to have to buy furniture and new appliances,” said Walker, whose organization also used the money to help victims replace vital tools, equipment, and structures. “We made an appeal to the Abbotsford Disaster Relief Fund, and they were there within a matter of days to support us.”
“The destruction the storm brought to our Abbotsford community, espe cially to our farmers and their land, was devastating,” said Anita Nielsen, Executive Director, Advancement at UFV. “It was incredibly moving and inspiring to watch our community come together so quickly to support each other through this dark period. As a coalition we felt it was vital to provide immediate financial aid to flood victims while working along side other community partners to assess and address the longer-term impact.”
The fund helped farmers replace machinery and equipment. Small business owners received funds to rebuild infrastructure and offset op erating costs. Displaced families had access to necessities including food and temporary housing.
“I’m most proud of the speed the part ners of the fund coalition displayed in pulling it together and being nimble in terms of how we were able to re
spond to the crisis, raise the money, and target those most in need,” said Katerina Anastasiadis, CEO of the Abbotsford Chamber. “It was important that people had access to funds in a quick manner and since the disaster hit, many farmers have still not yet received government assistance.”
So far, the fund has dis bursed grants to more than 20 not-for-profit or ganizations, to over 200 businesses and farms, and to over 100 individu als and families who lost personal belongings. The ADRF responded as the flood waters were receding and during the immedi ate and medium-term aftermath, but the fund is also designed to offer sup port in the longer recovery horizon. The remaining 20 percent of funds donated is available to help those still being impacted. Charities can continue to apply for funding through the ADRF portals at ACF.
“The catastrophic nature of the flood affected thousands of people and caused billions of dollars in dam age,” said Wendy Neufeld, Executive Director of ACF. “We raised a small fraction of the losses incurred, but through strategic partnerships we were able to help hundreds of affected Sumas Prairie residents within a short period of time, sometimes with the first financial aid they had received after devastating loss.”
Alison Arends, the owner of Crossroads Dairy Farm in Ab botsford, used funds from the ADRF to help distribute space heaters, blankets, clothes, and diapers from a massive storage unit on her farm. She allowed farmers to temporarily move their cows to her property and served hot lunches for up to 100 people daily.
“There was a lot of activity and a lot of different hired hands helping around the clock,” said Arends, who accessed two grants from the Cham ber stream and one through the Gate way Church. “Even though things have improved, there is still a lot of clean up to do and the situation is still not very good for many people.”
While the cumulative cost of the damage in Abbotsford exceeds the ADRF’s resources, there is funding still available for victims. One year after the tragedy, the organizers con tinue to help rebuild the community while recalling the fund’s initial im pact in the local recovery.
“Small grants to farmers and busi nesses in the early days following the flood was some of the first fi nancial help they received and gave them hope that they would recover,” Neufeld said. “We were able to adjust our systems and processes to respond to the high volume of donations and I am very proud of coalition staff and volunteers who helped us get this vol ume processed and tax receipts issued on a timely basis with very limited resources. We all worked extremely hard for the good of our community. That’s what this effort was all about.”

than 75 volunteers poured countless hours into helping the community recover and rebuild. They started the Abbotsford Disaster Response Coali tion (ADRC) which has raised more than $1.3 million to help meet gaps for flooding victims and they continue to operate a Crisis Response Centre. “The real heroes of this flood are the victims,” said ADRC Program Co ordinator, Milt Walker as he talked about their resiliency, humour, faith in the community, and unbelievable appreciation for the community in their time of need.
Ryan Boese and the team at Clear way Car & Truck Rentals were also recognized for their role in organiz ing and delivering food to isolated communities during peak floods. Donations were initially delivered by helicopter, and then they sent thousands of pounds of foods via truck, after obtaining approval from the provincial transportation ministry.
The Clearway team also organized food donations to the Sumas First Na
tion Band and helped a Sumas Prairie family move out of the affected flood zone.
When introducing Victoria Kuit, Richard Aikema, Archway Direc tor of Facilities reminisced about how everyone pitched in during the flood. He noted that “everyone did their part, however there are people like Victoria who did far above and continue to do far above their part.”
Kuit put her bookkeeping business on hold and opened up her home to establish the Yarrow Food Hub on No.3 Road. She helped hundreds of people, had thousands of visits, and helped given away tens of thousands of dollars of appliances, tools, cof fees, warm meals and frozen dinners. She spent long hours every day for months giving back to the community and providing a listening ear.
“When I opened my heart and home to my friends and fellow farmers, I had no idea, that almost a year later, we would have all become so close, and now we are like a family,” shared
Kuit. “We all came together as one big community, regardless of race, religion or social barriers and now we know that we have so many support networks to lean into.”
“I will continue to help and support my new family throughout the recov ery and resilience process, for as long as it takes.”
Pamela Chatry, Archway Board Member and CBA Chair recognized that there were many other flood heroes not officially recognized with an award and thanked them for their service.
MLAs Pam Alexis (Abbotsford-Mis sion) and Bruce Banman (Abbotsford South) surprised all recipients with certificates of appreciation from the B.C. Legislative Assembly.
Banman noted that while he and Alexis are on opposite teams, “the one thing that unites us all is when there is a tragedy of this magnitude.”

Winter checklist: Top tasks to do before the snow arrives
(NC) Cooler weather reminds us to make sure we’re pre pared for the challenges of winter. So, as you sip your pumpkin spice latte, think about some key things to tackle before the snow piles up.
For your body: Health experts are predicting Canada may be in for an ac tive, potentially serious, flu season this year. This means doctors and hospitals could face additional capac ity issues, so it’s a good idea to book your physical and any routine tests you need now. To help prevent seri ous illness, get your flu shot.
For your home: It’s a lot easier to do outdoor chores when there aren’t a few feet of snow on the ground and the temperatures are still above zero. Some jobs to add to your list include inspecting windows and doors for any air leaks,
shutting off the outdoor water supply, cleaning the eavestroughs and check ing the roof for any damage.
For your wardrobe:
Go through your winter clothes and footwear to see what needs to be re placed. You may find your sweaters are a bit tight or the tread on your snow boots has worn down. Taking stock now can help you take advan tage of early sales and make sure you find the right gear in the right size before it sells out.

Be careful in thinking that you know where someone else stands on a particular idea or subject. You can be forthright with your ideas or thoughts on matters and not inclined to hold back. This could cause some issues and you may wonder why. There could be some rebellion on their part. Best to draw back and observe.
The opportunity to rethink and make some
final decisions on important priorities in life will be the case until Christmas. This could include things that might be better to let go, not necessarily right now but early next year. It might be difficult to navigate around the determination of others right now without seeming rebellious.

Anything that has quickly taken place in your life since late August could now start to prove difficult to handle. Interfering with what normally needs to be done could be the main issue. Increased obligations from now to Christmas that you were not anticipating can add to the pressure. Slow things down from now to mid January.
Unexpected issues or matters going on behind the scenes that have been pressurised and ongoing since late August can now begin to slow down up to mid January. Take the opportunity to withdraw and rest as much as you can. Focus on long term goals from now to Christmas. They can become clear and definite.

This is a good time to focus on anything that needs to be caught up with or better structured after being put to one side for a while. You might begin to realise that future ambitions you have had this year might be better scaled down or aspects of it dropped. Consider this until Christmas so you are ready to move ahead next year.
Something could be finally agreed to with somebody else from now to Christmas, which has been difficult to sort this year. You may have come to realise there is little point in attempting to figure them out. Express your own ideas and thoughts. They could surprise you in being prepared to compromise rather than simply avoid.

Between now and Christmas you need to be mindful of what you agree to, no matter how small because it could turn out to be a lot more work than you presumed. For that reason, make sure you have an out or if payment is involved, that you will get what you deserve for the work done. Don’t worry about future plans for now.
It is important you make yourself clear right now, especially when it comes to anybody who has been challenging you since late August. There could still be some rebellion on their part but you are in the better position to show strength. It would be beneficial to focus on a bit more leisure time between now and Christmas.
You need to bide your time for now when it comes to the actions somebody else has been taking since late August. They could reverse their position between now and early January. Up to Christmas, you are in an excellent position to finally get yourself settled when it comes to getting a good foundation in place to build upon.
Something you have put into place since May might need some rethinking or perhaps renegotiating between now and Christmas. Part of it might be looking at the work required on regular basis and how this might turn out to be more than you anticipated. There is no rush. Just get things ready for the start of next year.

Watch your spending from now to Christmas – it could easily get out of hand. Some might have a lucky windfall but that can’t be relied upon. It could be necessary to cut back on things that are nice but not necessary until mid January. More than anything, you will appreciate your ability to be sensible and practical, when needs be.
Jupiter is back in your own sign for the third and final time up to 21st December. Then it won’t be back for 12 years. This, amongst other things, will challenge you to finalise something you have been off and on with since 2021. You need to leave excuses and uncertainty behind you and get on with it. Whatever you do is setting up foundations for the long term.
